24-25 Manhattan School of Music Performance Calendar

Page 1

It is my true privilege and delight to welcome you to Manhattan School of Music’s 2024–25 performance season. With hundreds of performances encompassing the full range of MSM’s classical, jazz, and musical theatre programs, this season truly offers something for everyone.

All of us are in for a remarkable variety of programming across eight thrilling months: from jazz concert celebrations marking the 40th anniversary of MSM’s first jazz degree program to fully staged opera and musical theatre productions, including Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette and a special extended run of Sondheim’s Into the Woods ; from performances by the School’s prestigious Orchestral Performance Program and MSM Artists in Residence American String Quartet and Windscape to large-scale works from the MSM Symphony Orchestra conducted by, among others, George Manahan (BM ’73, MM ’76), Mei-Ann Chen, and Leonard Slatkin (HonDMA ’13); from faculty and student recitals to a full season of Saturday Precollege Division concerts. And once again this year, we present a varied schedule of open-to-the-public master classes from world-renowned musicians and artists.

This year’s performance season has been inspired by a unifying theme: Humanity in Harmony: Rituals, Resistance, and Resilience. We hope during this election year, the biggest in human history with over half the world’s population having the opportunity to vote in 72 countries, that this theme reflects the power of the arts to unite us, even in moments of discord and differences. The collective experience of collaboration – creating together – reminds us that despite differences we can find common ground, stand up to tyranny and oppression, and elevate our work as artists to fulfill the hope and promise of a better tomorrow.

A season like this one reflects a deep-seated conviction, held by all of us at MSM, that the performing arts can provide a profound measure of uplift, healing, and consolation during tumultuous times. We look forward to offering many such moments in the days, weeks, and months ahead.

Welcome.

We prepare students for careers as accomplished and passionate performers, composers, and teachers, and as leaders in the arts and society.

Play a vital part in the life of this dynamic and beloved institution by becoming a member of the Virtuoso Society, our patron program, and help a young artist reach for the stars. In recognition of their generosity, we are pleased to invite Virtuoso Society members to special performances and receptions throughout the year.

To join the Virtuoso Society or for further information on how to support Manhattan School of Music, please contact the OFFICE OF PHILANTHROPY 917-493-4434 PHILANTHROPY@MSMNYC.EDU MSMNYC.EDU/GIVING

Naming a seat in Neidorff-Karpati Hall provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate your family, friends, a birthday or milestone event; to recognize a mentor or teacher who has inspired you; or to honor the memory of a loved one, while providing crucial support to maintain this beautiful hall—described by the New York Times as “one of the Art Deco treats in the city.”

We invite you to “take a seat” by making a fully tax-deductible contribution:

$5,000 Orchestra seat

$3,000 Balcony seat

In recognition of your generous support, a plaque bearing your name, or the name of the person you choose to honor, will grace your seat in magnificent Neidorff-Karpati Hall.
