SOUKS

SH ARJAH

Central Souk Fringed by the Khalid Lagoon, Sharjah’s Central Souk is one of the most popular tourist stops. Easily recognised by its distinctive blue domes, barjeel (windrowers) and mashrabiya (latticed windows) which are adorned with Arabic calligraphy, the souk is an eye-catching sight. Stop here to shop for exquisite gold and silver jewelry, antiques and souvenirs, pashminas, traditional Arab clothing and carpets from Iran, Afghanistan and India. Cosmetics, perfumes, watches and electronics are available too.

Souk Al Arsah Over half a century ago, Souk Al Arsah was a popular stop for the merchant caravans from Persia and India. Wooden Arabic bridal and pearl chests, incense and hand-woven garments are the top buys here. Or just stop here for some pretty pictures of lantern-lit hallways, coral brick walls and massive wooden doors.

Souk Al Shanasiyah Souk Al Shanasiyah used to be one of the oldest and most vibrant souks in the whole

region. Souk Al Shanasiyah features cafes, art and garment stores along with various other outlets. The souk is situated within the popular Heart of Sharjah heritage area.

Souk Al Ghuwair Cheap and cheerful Souk Al Ghuwair is a bargain hunter’s delight with rows of shops selling a plethora of diverse goods: textiles, garments, accessories, toys, bedspreads, curtains and even the latest gadgets.

Souk Al Bahar Sitting next to the Sharjah Creek, Souk Al Bahar is a heady collection of spices, herbs, henna, perfumes, aromatic oils, Sheesha and flavored tobacco. Stroll along the souk’s waterfront to soak in the frantic ambience and explore the creek where the dhows are moored.

LANDMARKS Sharjah’s landmarks are evocative of the Emirate’s rich culture and Islamic heritage.
