CELEBRATE LOVE IN

II’ve always said that magic is made when you least expect it. That certainly holds true for this issue. It was literally born on a train headed for Chicago. In September, Ethan, our publisher, and I were headed to the bridal market. It’s a whirlwind of fashion shows, catching up with local salon owners, meeting designers and seeking out the latest trends. We hopped an early train and of course started talking all things wedding, brainstorming about the upcoming issue. I remember telling him that ever since I was a little girl, I loved nothing more than ipping through my parents wedding album, and of course I had to pull up my parents wedding picture. They were married in 1956. That photo sparked what ended up being a four-anda-half-hour conversation about decades of weddings. The fountain cake made an appearance as well as talk of the “big” trends of the 1980’s. There was a moment when we looked at each other and said, “that’s it, this issue needs to be all about decades.”

As I started work on this issue, I knew that I wanted to create the feeling of timelessness meets modern, not just with the fashion, but with the overall feeling of a celebration.

The story on page 148 talks about putting your twist on special family traditions. Tying in something borrowed from an already happily married couple is believed to lend the newlywed’s good luck. Over time, this meaning has broadened to include honoring someone or something that has played a signi cant role in your love story. Including a family heirloom or surprising your parents with replicas of their cakes complete with the toppers can help add layers of meaning and signi cance to your celebration.

As you start your planning journey, I encourage you to ip through your parent’s wedding album, talk with your grandparents and look for those little gems all around that may spark that glimmer of inspiration for your wedding.

“Our goal was to go beyond just photographing beautiful gowns and evoke an emotion of decades past.”

Stephanie got her start as a photojournalist in 1999 photographing everything from sporting events to political protests. What she enjoyed most was photographing people and their relationship to the world around them. In 2003 she started her own business. Her husband, Peter, later joined her as a photographer and business partner. Together they have developed it into one of the top photography studios in St. Louis, winning many awards both locally and internationally.

READING YOUR VOWS PRIVATELY

Taking time to your read your vows prior to the larger celebration can help you keep your center and quietly focus on what the day is all about. On page 84 Lauren says “If you hate public speaking like Jacob and I do, but want to write vows for each other, read them to one another during your rst look, it was such a special moment for us. Kia + Shaunice on page 86 did the same thing, “We shared our vows privately and had a few moments alone ahead of the ceremony to take it all in together. It was probably the only time we had alone the entire night so I’m happy we had a moment to be still and enjoy each other.

VINTAGE CAKES DESIGNS

MADE MODERN

From vintage cake toppers passed down from your parents, to incorporating a fun vintage feature like, yes, we said it, a fountain. Wedding Wonderland created this special cake featuring a classic 80’s fountain for a recent wedding. Giving beloved cake designs the comeback they deserve is one way to add style to your celebration. Both Elle’s cake on page 86, and this classic white wedding cake from The Sweet Divine feature piping elements that create a timeless 50’s feel. We love every detail on this stunning six-tier cake from The Cakery giving all the 90’s vibes.

THE BRIDAL PANTSUIT

Cakes aren’t the only thing having a vintage moment. The pantsuit is back! We love a wardrobe change and this retro inspired look that Molly wore for her reception seen on page 114 made us do a double take. She says, “Changing into that jumpsuit was the best decision I made, next to marrying Eric of course! Adding, “It was so comfortable and easy for me to move around in. Another favorite is the look on page 165. Straight out of the 80’s, the overskirt is perfect a big entrance and easily removable for dancing the night away. This this twopiece set is modern, sexy, and just waiting for her moment.

Named after a character in Charles Dickens’ classic, Great Expectations, Havisham House offers weekend lodging, a 200-guest wedding pavilion, and a New Orleans style bourbon bar on the property. The homes and bourbon bar building were built in the 1800s and recently renovated with modern luxury, while saving all its old-world charm. Wedding package pricing is based on the time of year, and each package includes lodging in both historic homes, and the use of the wedding pavilion for the entire weekend. Many couples utilize the pavilion for their rehearsal dinners, weddings, wedding receptions and Sunday brunches to gather friends and family before their departures. Having a swanky bourbon bar next door is an added perk. Tours are available by appointment.

REAL MOMENTS

The Sangeet was easily the most memorable moment in our celebration. It’s an Indian tradition in which friends and family perform dances for the couple. Our friends planned four different dances. We loved all four, but the biggest surprise was learning that my parents had been taking dance lessons for months and surprised everyone by dancing to “Conga” by Gloria Estefan. Apparently, they were secretly practicing their dance moves in the basement during the week leading up to the wedding. It was incredible!”

It was very memorable to have my now father-in-law officiate our wedding. This made our ceremony very intimate and personal. Although I was nervous to write our own vows, reading our personal vows to each other was truly the most special and memorable part of our wedding day. At the end of the evening, we had planned to do a last dance together, just the two of us. They never announced that it was just going to be us and so everyone grabbed their partner to slow dance. We had chosen a song that meant a lot to us and looking out on the dance floor, we saw and felt so much love in the room surrounding us.”

If you hate public speaking like we do but want to write vows for each other, read them to one another during your first look. As the day progresses, find time for just the two of you, whether that be a private cocktail or sharing a last dance alone. After our ceremony, we went straight to the bridal suite to share our first cocktail as husband and wife, and our wedding planner brought us apps from the cocktail hour. Before the father/daughter dance, the bride’s father played a video compilation of special moments the bride and her father experienced throughout the bride’s upbringing, at the end of the video, the bride’s father extended his arm for the first dance to the song Find Your Wings by Mark Harris.

In February of 2018, the groom’s father, Anthony “Tony” Mellos, passed away. During his lifetime, Tony served in the Air Force and volunteered in the Vietnam War. To honor Tony’s memory and his service to our Country, the bride’s father, Bryan Malzahn, invited Retired Naval Petty Officer, 1st Class, Generald Wilson to sing God Bless America at the beginning of the reception. It was a complete surprise and the entire room stood and sang along.”

REAL MOMENTS

Our ceremony was supposed to be outside, under huge pine trees. It rained (read: poured) day of. Allissa and her team created a magical indoor ceremony space where we felt like we were in a little bubble, hiding away from the storm together, in a space filled with candles, flowers, and greenery. I remember standing under the chuppah and, for the first time that day, feeling a true sense of peace. Everything came together, the most important people were in the room, and we reached the moment that we spent well over a year planning.”

Hire a bad ass wedding planner like Allissa. Someone who fits your personality, makes you comfortable, tells you the truth you need to hear, understands your vision and how to execute it, and can make a little magic happen. I'd also say to have serious discussions with your partner about what would make the day a success and what is less important. We wanted to have an outdoor wedding and ultimately the rain sent us inside. We'd had discussions about how as much as we wanted to be outside, it ultimately had no bearing on if we considered the day a success. That made it so much easier to relax when it rained and just enjoy the moment.”

AUGUST 12, 2022 NICHE

The first look was the most memorable moment, and we almost didn’t do it! It was so special to see my bride before our guests to help calm my nerves, she truly is my center, and that moment was crucial to putting me at ease! We shared our vows privately and had a few moments alone ahead of the ceremony to take it all in together. It was probably the only time we had alone the entire night so I’m happy we had a moment to be still and enjoy each other. Our first dance is a close second! We danced to Everything by Kehlani, a song I chose after hearing it and immediately knew that it captured everything that we wanted to say to each other in that moment. We danced and laughed and sang to one another! It was one of the most beautiful moments of the day and even in a room full of family and friends we were able to connect and share an intimate moment.”

The inspiration came from a colorful spring palette with mismatched bud vases, a geometric altar, and of course classic cars. Cars complimented with floral has been one of my favorite trends as of recently and this venue and my amazing team of vendors was able to make that vision a reality!

Raising the Bar!

There was a time when couples didn’t give the wedding bar much thought when they were planning their nuptials. With the resurgence of classic cocktails, the proliferation of craft beers and more quality wines available than ever before, these days the bar has become an integral part of the celebration.

“I think people are paying more attention to the bar,” said Laura Bunch, co-owner of Wild Carrot (3901 Shaw Blvd, St. Louis, 63110), adding “I do feel that it hasn’t always been important.”

Bunch said that she has been elding more requests for mid-tier and higher bar packages of late also. “[Clients] are seeing the value in it. It’s not just about cheap beer anymore.”

Tyler Wolff, events manager for Willow (321 N. 10th Street, 63101) said he’s also been seeing clients spending extra and opting for more high-end bar packages.

“People are branching out,” said Kelly Spencer, founder and lead design of The Social Affair at The Dogwood In The Grove (4308 Manchester Ave., 63110). In the past, guests would more often than not stick to tried and true options like vodka tonic or a pedestrian light lager, but these days Spencer said she’s seeing more clients opt for other, more unique libations that used to not be featured as much at wedding bars. Case in point: tequila.

“People are loving anything with tequila, even just on the rocks,” she said. “It’s crazy!” She added that properly made classic cocktails are now an expectation.

“We always have an Old Fashioned available at the bar,” Spencer said.

Ryan Manka, a service industry consultant who has been working extensively with Butler’s Pantry, agreed that the classics remain at the forefront of clients’ cocktail requests.

“The French 75 is at almost wedding we’re doing right now,” he said. Bubbles, be it champagne, prosecco or other sparkling wines, are exceedingly popular as cocktail ingredients as well, according to Manka.

Many couples like to get creative and have a signature drink, unique to

them and their special day.

“We also do a lot of signature cocktails and this is a trend that continues to grow,” said Kristen Swidrak, Director of Catering and Conference Services for Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis (999 N. 2nd St., 63102). “It's really popular to have two different cocktails - a ‘his’ and a ‘hers.’ The couple also creates cute branding/signage on the bar describing what the drinks are. One recent couple even named their signature cocktails after their two dogs!”

Wolff said he’s also been seeing more clients requesting their own signature drinks and, like Swidrak, he’s had a good number of them naming their drinks after their four-legged companions!

These sorts of custom cocktails are something Spencer said she often gets called upon to provide, much to her delight.

“I love playing with different avor pro les,” she said, adding that The Dogwood uses only fresh juices and house-made syrups for their creations, like The Social Standard, which features bourbon, cranberry and homemade spiced simple syrup, among other ingredients. It can be served hot or cold depending on the season, for what Spencer described as a “warm and fuzzy” drinking experience

In fact, custom seems to be the watchword for couples creating their wedding day extravaganzas.

“We do our best to customize bar offerings to each couple,” said Swidwrak. “Some grooms want a speci c local microbrew on the bar, or their favorite bourbon - which, of course, we're happy to get.”

“It’s really what the bride and groom want, and we really try to lean into that,” said India Stevens, bar supervisor for Four Seasons Hotel St. Louis. “Anything we can do for them we’re happy to do. If they have a favorite cocktail, we can do a riff on that, or something new.”

Some couples take the idea of bespoke beverages even further.

“We’re seeing a lot of brides and even grooms saying as long as [the drink] ts their theme or their colors, they don’t necessarily care what’s

The drink options at your wedding bar should be as unique as the two of you.

Raising the Bar!

in the cocktail,” said Manka. He recently had a client who requested drinks in two separate shades of pink to match the colors used in the wedding ceremony.

Manka credits social media, speci cally Instagram, for much of the focus couples are now putting on their wedding bars.

“People see their friend do something at their wedding and they decide ‘That’s amazing, I want to do what they did,’” he said.

Beer and wine, once afterthoughts, are now front and center. Spencer likes to take advantage of the vibrant local beer scene when she’s putting together bar options for guests.

“We’re surrounded by wonderful neighbors, and we like to support them,” she said. Some of these include Urban Chestnut, 4 Hands, Rockwell and Well Being for those looking for a non-alcoholic option.

Spencer said clients continue to look for interesting wines for their bars, eschewing the old generic “one red one white” rule. The Dogwood recently partnered with Jackson Family Wines to create a carefully curated wine list that offers clients a broad range of choices.

“They have so many amazing wines,” Spencer said.

Adult non-alcoholic beverages have been gaining momentum in recent years, and the booze-free aesthetic has become a trend for wedding bars as well.

“We have a lot of couples requesting N/A drinks,” Spencer said, adding her specialty cocktails are designed to be made with or without spirits, so

guests who eschew alcohol can have the same taste experience as the rest of the party.

“I do feel that N/A has become more of a thing,” Bunch said. “Guests really appreciate it, and it can be just as exciting.

I think our team has had a really good time doing them.”

Spencer and Bunch both said they almost always have non-alcoholic beer options at their events as well from producers like St. Louis’ own WellBeing and Athletic Brewing out of Connecticut.

Service-wise, many couples are opting for a pre-reception cocktail hour to help ll the void while the wedding party gets pictures taken and guests begin to arrive.

“It gets everyone into the party immediately, and we’re seeing a lot of brides and grooms who want a whiskey bar or a champagne wall, something that immediately says ‘we’re having a party so everyone come join in’ instead of just sitting down at a table.” He said most receptions he’s working on currently have some sort of a cocktail hour included.

“They’re pre-gaming almost for the reception,” he said.

Bunch said Wild Carrot often gets requests for satellite bars serving wine and beer in its outdoor areas as well as its custom lounge for those who want a prereception tipple before the main bar opens for business.

“One of my vision boards for a styled shoot was French Blues and what better place to do it than none other than the Edwardsville Le Chateau? The gorgeous lake, amazing architecture, and stunning sunsets made for the most romantic scenes. With this shoot I wanted to incorporate all of Le Chateau’s beauty. So I split the shoot into 3 different stylesFrench Blues outside, Moody Tones inside, and a Spring/Summer Vibes engagement session showing off the grounds. I incorporated the grounded floral altar outside, snuck in a little bride and groom getaway out on the lake, and popped some Styled Bubbly with a champagne tower, just to name a few of my favorite recent trends. This shoot was a true dream and I owe it all to the amazing vendors that followed my crazy ideas!” – Allie Ojeda

LOST in the MOMENT

We wanted to make our wedding unique to us by intentionally curating an awe-inspiring experience for our guests that featured little moments inspired by our personal tastes, and favorite things,” the couple shares. Enter the team of Simcha Lourie of Simcha’s Events and Jimmy Jamieson of Jamieson Design Associates. They along with a team of well-seasoned and extremely creative wedding professions, made that vision came to life. Simcha remembers, “The original inspiration for the event was a play on the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles,” she adds, “I knew that this event required a sizeable venue, so I brought up the idea of an airplane hangar.” Enter the Commemorative Air Force Hangar at Smartt Field in St. Charles. It offered the space needed without having to construct a tent. Rachel and Daniel also had the vision of one large table that would seat all their guests. Simcha explains, “We talked extensively about the options to make it work, looking at all the possibilities for seating, and based on the size constraints of the hangar along with the logistics of dinner service for 300 guests, we made the decision to use a series of long community tables.”

Once the venue selection was nalized, the next step was to work on the overall design. One of the main objectives was to transform the reception venue to a series of experiences for the guests. Jimmy explained, “We really wanted to pay homage to the timeless look Rachel and Daniel loved, and also noted that they were very involved in the entire creative process. Simcha adds, “They weighed in on every decision.” To move the design process from paper the hangar, Simcha and Jimmy reached out to Decorum and Festive Couture Floral. The event was in forward motion. Decorum started work on the lighting plan as well as the custom design elements needed to transform the space. Jimmy explains, “From start to nish, we looked at each element of the event individually, and then as a whole.” As guests arrived via motorcoach to the airport, they would be dropped off on the tarmac, To set the tone, Decorum used soft draping to create a closed intimate entry that led the guests to the open-air pre-function area just outside the hangar.” Chester eld Valley Nursery provided live trees that created an organic orchard feel and since textile and textural elements were important touches, Decorum provided the lounge furniture set in

groups. They also created a beautiful “gate” that served not only to keep the hangar space closed until dinner service but was the stunning escort card display as well.

For the interior space, the couple and their team wanted to create the feeling of a great dinner party; warm, intimate, and inviting with of course, great food and drink. Simcha explains, “Food and hospitality are a common theme in Rachel and Daniel’s lives and they love to host Sunday dinner, cooking for friends and family.” Setting the stage, Decorum draped the hangar walls and with a nod to Versailles added mirrors around the entire perimeter. For the tablescape design, Jimmy

and Simcha worked closely with Frankie Peltier of Festive Couture Florist to design the overall look. The long wood tables featured gold chargers in two styles along with gold atware. “We wanted the tables to be unique with a different mix of glassware, so we chose multiple styles,” Jimmy said, “They all went together beautifully, it felt playful and elegant.” Simcha added, “Jimmy and Frankie focused on the tabletop early on, sourced the pieces and were able to reserve everything so that we knew we had everything we needed without any fear of shortages.” She continues, “The gorgeous mahogany ceiling of the hangar added so much warmth to the

space and to draw the eye up, Decorum hung Moroccan lanterns.” To nish the décor, Frankie created beautiful olive trees that kept sight lines open, added greenery and tons of candles in keeping with the organic feel of the space.

As the wedding day approached Simcha explained, “Having a solid plan in place was critical”, she adds, “As we developed the event timeline, we tried to think about every possible scenario. The installation started on Monday, and every vendor had to be scheduled in a speci c way based on their role adding, because of their size and weight, the trees were the rst thing to arrive, then other elements fell

in place behind them,” Decorum and Festive Couture worked around everyone, almost around the clock. Given the outdoor space, a catering kitchen was built in a tent behind the hangar. “We were able to address issues that you can’t possibly think of unless you are actually there in the venue at all hours of the day and night.” Jimmy explains, “The light installation alone took 5 days and I think we did a total of 6 hours of light checks.” Simcha continues, “There are a multitude of issues to consider when working in an outside venue, for example, the teams working at night made us aware that mosquitos may be a problem, so we used fans to diffuse the air making it

comfortable for the guests.” She adds, “The venue was in the middle of a corn eld, so we had people designated to wipe off the furniture and mop the oors the day of the event because of all of the dust” As anyone who has planned an outdoor knows, checking the weather is something done often and obsessively. “There were no storms forecasted, yet late in the evening, a random storm popped up.” Simcha said, “There are things you can control, and some you can’t, and we were as ready as we could be.”

When talking about the more memorable moments of the evening, Jimmy remembers, “There was a moment just as dinner was

announced and the hangar was open, that I was standing at the entrance with Matthew Reed, my design associate listening to the live violin performance that greeted the guests. Seeing the guests take it all in was the moment we knew that the transformation was complete, and the team hit the proverbial home run.” Simcha adds, “Of course, I loved seeing Daniel and Rachel’s reaction as they entered the space, that’s always a wonderful part of the planning process”, but she adds, “The moment that really stands out was later in the evening, watching Daniel and Rachel on the dance oor with their friends and family celebrating an amazing journey, happy, relaxed and completely lost in the moment.

California Cla ic

This wedding shoot was inspired by chic lines, whimsical blooms, spring colors and natural textures. I wanted to bring in the heart of an Al Fresco, Californian wedding to the Midwest. Inspiration came from the beautiful scenery of the California and Tuscan landscapes. However, I did not want this to look so much like a traditional wedding, as I wanted to add a modern flair. Hence why I chose florals with fun textures and bright colors. The photographer, Claire Bira helped me scout locations that did not look true to St. Louis but more like we escaped to a scenic destination. I wanted to have the look of my shoot to feel like the heart of my brand: natural, chic, with a touch of whimsy and elegance. I really wanted to do my own take of current trends of more color, especially green! I love that green has become such a prominent wedding color, because it has always been my favorite color, so I wanted to ensure there was a variety of greens throughout the look. Lastly, a mixture of film and natural photographs was big for me. The film "trend" for photos is something I have always loved, and Claire captured this day on film with perfection!

LET’S TAKE A TO GEORGIA!Road Trip

RRich West remembers getting the phone call, “We’re moving the wedding to Georgia!”

He took a deep breath and immediately got to work realizing that he had just about 2 months to plan a destination wedding. Jordan explains, “It was rough, the pandemic threw wrenches in every plan we made, times FOUR!” The wedding, planned in St. Louis was rescheduled 3 times. When faced with yet another postponement, the couple made the decision to move the celebration to a venue in Thomasville, Georgia. According to Jordan, “once we decided to move the party south, the eagerness and willingness from our St. Louis vendors, whom of which we were not expecting to say yes was overwhelming to say the least.” Rich adds, “I was on board from the moment the decision was made. I immediately reached out to the vendor team and happily most were able to accommodate not only the date change from May 1st to May 15th, but were excited about the road trip.” Diving right into the planning, Rich and Bryan Schulte with Exclusive Events immediately scheduled a ight to Georgia, met with the venue and sourced the local vendors that would be needed to produce the event. Rich explains, “I needed a local base of operations and found a local oral company that could assist with the production and receive the oral shipments.” They met with the tent company and a new design concept was created. He adds, “the venue went from a ballroom to a tent, so we had to rework the original design.”

The week of the wedding arrived, and the Exclusive Events team took to the road with as Jordan says, “all the elements that they built and curated for us.” The rest of the vendors soon followed. “It all started with the welcome party”, Jordan says, “where Chris (Johnson) let my family, who LOVES a good karaoke moment take over the microphone.” She adds, “his energy is contagious, and that night would not have been the same without him!” She continues, “As I think back on our celebration, each and every vendor played such a signi cant part in making our dream nally come true”, she continues, “on the day of the wedding, there was a moment when Will and I, along with our families had a private moment in the reception space. It was like we were living a dream. The day that

we waited SO long to celebrate was nally here and it was more than we could have ever imagined!” Rich adds, “none of this would have been possible without the support and willingness of the team of St. Louis vendors to take their talent on the road,” he continues, “from LPhotographie, The Smash Band and Fred Barerra rolling cigars, there was no stone left unturned.” Jordan adds, “Rich was both our planner and our orist and made it a point to go above and beyond in every way possible to make our entire weekend celebration come to life in a way we never thought possible, she concludes, “we felt the love from each and every one of our St. Louis vendors and it’s safe to say they quickly became family!”

Incorporating Family Traditions and History into Your Wedding

Bride-to-be Amanda Robinson jumped into wedding planning as soon as she became engaged. She loved looking at the latest trends and seeing what other brides chose for their big day, from bridal magazines to Pinterest to seeing her friends get married. She took copious notes and collected tons of ideas. It was exciting and fun and she had enough inspiration to have a dozen weddings. But it was also a little overwhelming.

Her wedding planner helped her scale down her vision a

little by having Robinson think a little more regarding what the celebration was really about. “The wedding is about me and my partner starting our lives together, and the joining of our families,” Robinson said. “It’s a coming together of all the people we love most. We wanted to make sure we honored both our families and their stories and traditions as we begin our lives as a married couple.”

That’s something that Ashlee Erlinger, owner and designer of Signed Sealed Delivered Events, always strives to do when helping plan a wedding. “We ask the couple to re ect on what

is special to their families,” Erlinger said. “How to you want to honor your family and make your wedding meaningful and unique?”

Options abound for weaving family history and traditions into your wedding celebration, from the rehearsal dinner to the reception. Read on for inspiration from wonderful weddings and some of St. Louis’s most experienced and well-loved vendors.

Special Spaces

Sometimes it’s the location itself that has a signi cant history to the family. Allison McDonald, owner and lead coordinator at Flourish Events, planned a wedding in which the ceremony was held at the church where two previous generations of the bride’s family were married. “This couple also held their reception at the same place the grandparents had wedding photos taken,” McDonald said. “They recreated the same photo in front of the replace there. It

was a nice tribute to the grandparents.”

Amy Cavato and her two siblings each had their rehearsal dinners at Busch Stadium. “We grew up going to lots of Cardinals games and later, going to Spring Training every year. We all knew we had to make Cardinals baseball a part of our wedding celebrations,” Cavato said. Her older sister’s rehearsal dinner was in a party suite during a game with hot dogs, beer and nachos. The rehearsal dinners for Cavato and her brother at Busch weren’t on a game day, but in an upscale sports club there that offered more refined food and great photo opportunities on the field and in the dugout.

Family Functions

We have all likely been to weddings where a family member has been a reader or maybe had a talented relative sing or play music. But there are lots of other ways to include family members that are especially important to you. “I’ve seen grandmother and aunts serve as ower girls,” Ashlee Erlinger said. “It’s a really nice way to involve them and they really get a kick out of it.”

Erlinger has also seen “ rst looks” include grandparents of the bride, or the groom and his mom. “They get to have a special moment with their grandchild or child before the busy day begins,” Erlinger said.

Older generations can also be honored on the dance oor. Erlinger has planned weddings where the M.C. requests the longest-married couples to come out and have a special dance, and sometimes to give the newlyweds marriage advice.

Meaningful Menus

Most family gatherings involve food, and often there is a favorite dish or a traditional meal served at every get-together. Incorporate family foods into your wedding to honor your history and the people that have made these muchloved foods throughout the years.

Marti Weber, director of sales at Hollyberry Catering, said they’ve often recreated dishes from recipes given to them by the family. “One family had a grandmother that served a French toast casserole every Sunday,” Weber said. “It was a brunch wedding and they asked if we could make it. It was so delicious and popular that we now offer it as part of our brunch menu.”

Even if the couple doesn’t have the exact recipe, they can share a general idea with the Hollyberry team and the chefs take it from there. “We’re open to foods that couples request, inspired by some of their favorite dishes they may have grown up with,” said Weber. “One bride hoped to have honeybourbon glazed carrots like her mom used to make, and our chefs created the dish for her.”

Drinks can also be a nod to a tradition or a family member. One groom insisted they offer a budget-brand beer at their reception that his deceased father loved. Erlinger said, “Sometimes a there will be a toast at the rehearsal dinner with a speci c whiskey or bourbon that is a favorite of the family.”

Hollyberry can create menus representing the cultural background of the family, such as Indian or Mexican food. They recently catered a wedding for a family from Peru and the relatives brought their own sweets-traditional, bite-sized Peruvian desserts.

Dessert seems to be the part of the meal (yes, dessert is de nitely a part of the meal!) that really invites personalization and participation of the family. Nikki Klapp’s father’s family business is located near Crown Candy Kitchen, the legendary diner and candy shop in St. Louis since 1913. They have patronized Crown Candy for many years, for lunch and their yummy confections. “My family became friends with the owners, after so many lunches there. We wanted to make Crown Candy a part of the wedding. We had a candy buffet at the reception offering all our favorites from there-

heavenly hash, malted milk balls, Swedish sh, chocolate crowns, and colored nonpareils. It was a way to pay tribute to all of our good times there and people loved it.”

The tradition of the Pittsburgh Cookie Table is making its way across the country. Some say it began in the Pittsburgh area with East European, Italian, and Greek immigrants who wanted to bring a taste of their homeland to the new world. Others believe it grew out of the Depression era, as cookies were more affordable than an elaborate cake. Families make many, many cookies of different types, usually from passed-down recipes. Erlinger planned a wedding with a groom from Pittsburgh, and boy, did the groom’s side deliver. “His family made a variety of cookies-3,500 of them!” said Erlinger. “They even had cookies decorated with the Arch and cookies with a Pittsburgh bridge on them. It was a cool way of welcoming the bride to the family and for the groom’s side

to get involved.”

The cutting of the cake was an event that both the bride and groom’s parents took part in at another wedding designed by the Signed Sealed Delivered team. “Both sets of parents had been married a long time, and to honor that, we had smaller replica wedding cakes that looked like the cakes from their weddings,” Erlinger said. “So the bride and groom and their parents all cut their cakes together. It was a special moment.”

Family Treasures

We’ve all heard the rhyme “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” but there are endless ways to honor a loved one or a family tradition by including special items into your day.

“Some couples carry on the practice of having personalized matchboxes or cocktail napkins at the reception, because it’s a tradition from past family weddings,” Erlinger said. She also said this may be the time when family heirloom pieces of jewelry are passed on, such as a mother’s necklace or earrings. Brides also add special broaches and lockets to their bouquets. Often the cake topper or an antique cake knife are ones used at earlier family celebrations.

Is your mother’s wedding dress not quite right for you to wear? It can still be included, by wrapping a piece of lace from the dress around your bridal bouquet or using some of the lace as an applique to your gown.

Allison McDonald of Flourish Events planned a wedding with a unique way of honoring women of the families who’d

previously walked down the aisle. “The couple displayed the wedding dresses of family brides going back to the early 1900’s. The dresses were shown on mannequins at the reception, with little cards describing the dresses and who wore them when. It was kind of like a museum piece, paying homage to the previous generations.”

Memorable Music

Playing sentimental songs is an easy yet meaningful way to pay tribute to certain loved ones. Bea Pollard and her brothers arranged for a favorite local performer to sing their deceased father’s favorite song at their younger brother’s rehearsal dinner. “It was an unexpected but sweet way to remember my dad as the wedding celebrations began,” Pollard said.

Lisa Wiley and her siblings make sure a song from their childhood is always played at family weddings. “There’s this song from the 1970’s called ‘Little Willy’ that’s pretty obscure,” Wiley said. “But my brother and sisters and I always used to dance to it when we were kids. At our weddings, and now our kids’ weddings, we always have that song played and just we siblings dance to it. Not many other people know the song, but it’s so fun for my brother and sisters and I get to get out on the dance oor and just go crazy like we did when we were kids,” Wiley said. “We just danced to ‘Little Willy’ at my niece’s wedding and had a ball. There may have been a few strange looks, but it’s really meaningful to us kids, especially now that we live all over the country.”

Couples can honor their parents by choosing the same rst dance song, McDonald said. “It’s also nice to offer a special dance just for the parents and grandparents.”

Amy Cavato, of the baseball-loving family, had a surprise in store for her father-daughter dance. “He didn’t know which song I had picked and I surprised him with the band playing ‘Take Me Out to the Ballgame,’” Cavato said. “There’s this great moment when the photographer caught my dad laughing with his head thrown back as soon as he realized which song it was.”

Weddings celebrate the family you are beginning with your new spouse. But it’s also about paying tribute to the past as you begin your future together.

IIn the 1950s, Christian Dior’s “New Look,” featured a cinched waist, and full skirt. These designs made a great impact on the wedding industry. The result? The rise of the ball gown with incredible detailing. Think Grace Kelly and Jacqueline Kennedy. With detailed bodices, back bows and whimsical skirts these timeless gowns are a nod to the haute couture style of the 1950’s. The glamour the era is renowned for was just as evident in the wedding bouquets Many featuring a single bloom such as lily-of-the-valley seen above as well as delicately streaming ribbons.

In tune with this revolutionary decade, wedding dress hemlines were raised nally signifying acceptance of tea length, and even short wedding dresses. For a modern update, we love the play on lace details and fringe hems that add a fun textural air. There was not a particular look that reigned supreme during the 1970’s. From long boho gowns worn with oppy hats to the sleek, streamlined, designs of Halston, multiple silhouettes made appearances. In 1977 the iconic ‘Studio 54’ made its’ debut, the age of disco ARRIVED, and we’re here for it! The look is all about style, glamour and personality. These effortlessly glam Studio 54 inspired looks radiate elegance with just a bit of a rebelliousness. For him, it was the decade to play with every cut, color, and fabric imaginable. It was known as the “peacock” look because men over-dressed themselves in ashy suits, shirts, and footwear. Why not take a bit of that inspiration and make the change to a beautifully tailored jacket in a rich color, brocade, or paisley to make a statement.

TThis decade was all about dramatic elements. Oversized skirts with cathedral trains complete with puffed sleeves inspired by Princess Diana were the popular choice. BIG was the word of the decade, and women in the 1980s went all-out when choosing their gown. The removable sleeves, crisp fabrics, and the overskirt over a two-piece pantsuit are the perfect updates to the era's dramatic styles. These looks are just waiting to make their grand entrance. Like the gowns of the decade, cakes and orals were made to command the same attention. Many cakes had tiers upon tiers supported by pillars and incorporated such opulent touches as working fountains.

TThe 1990's ushered in minimalistic design concepts and carved out an emphasis on clean lines. This trend was perfectly exempli ed with the dress worn by Carolyn Bessette in her wedding to John F. Kennedy Jr. Following her lead, brides chose gowns that were simple yet beautifully constructed. In keeping with trend of minimalism, simple stacked cakes began to pop up, while bridal bouquets shrunk in size, as women were opting for more simple one bloom bouquets as they did in the 50's.
