Sail With the “Master” Aboard Charis+
Sail with local sailing legend and calypso recording artist Llewellyn Westerman aboard his 6-passenger, 37’ locally-designed-and-built performance trimaran Charis+. Llewellyn is a sailor with over 50 years of experience sailing to Buck Island. His understanding of the wind, weather and currents and awareness of aquatic life, flora, and fauna of Buck Island is sure to enrich your sailing experience. You’ll enter the St. Croix Yacht Club and meet him at a small dock taking a seat in a dinghy boat with a hand-rowed trip out to Charis+. As you stow your things and get settled in the spacious cockpit, Llewellyn, and his first mate, will prepare to set sail for Buck Island and, within minutes, you’ll be silently underway. It’s a great day to enjoy a brown bag lunch or something from your favorite deli. Llewellyn provides fresh water and snorkeling equipment. It is in Nevis that Llewellyn first spent time on boats as a child, sailing and fishing with his brother Inglore and their father, Aurthur.

Aurthur was a boat captain and fisherman in Nevis and Llewellyn’s grandfather, Richard Westerman, was also a boat captain and sailed cargo vessels between St. Kitts and Nevis. Llewellyn came to St. Croix in 1960 and lived and worked at Grapetree Bay Hotel for 20 years performing music at night and taking guests to Buck Island by day. He sailed three boats
before buying a 36’ trimaran named Charis, in 1979, and starting Llewellyn’s Charter. Charis+ was designed by George Silver and built by George, Llewellyn, Inglore and friends after Charis was destroyed during Hurricane Lenny in 1999.
