I
n a limited opportunity not to be missed, Melbourne photographer Nathan Penhall’s exhilarating portfolio of nature and aerial images can be seen at Mornington Library during January and February, and Oak Hill Gallery in March. His work reveals the changeable nature of our land’s beauty – sometimes delicate, sometimes powerful – transporting visitors on a journey through locations recognisable and unfamiliar. With a strong belief in the transformative power of imagery to evoke emotions and forge connections, Nathan knows each viewer’s experience of the exhibition

will be unique. Some will enjoy picking out locations they have previously visited; many will marvel at the breathtaking kaleidoscope of nature’s colours, while others may instinctively feel a pang of hope for the protection of our precious untouched sites so they can stand for generations to come. He admits it is a conscious aim of his portfolio to raise awareness about sustainability and the importance of preserving our pristine habitats. Shooting at locations all over Australia, Nathan has high praise for our own scenery. “The contrasting landscape of the Mornington Peninsula is a dream for any photographer of the natural environment,” he said. “From the endless green rolling hills of world-

class vineyards to the rugged and windswept coastlines of national parks, every corner you turn provides a cinematic backdrop to capture. It’s a truly magical place.” Pressed to nominate which part of our region impresses him most, Nathan said: “Arriving at Cape Schanck an hour before sunrise on a cold August morning holds a special place in my memory, and has been my favourite destination to capture on the Peninsula. Dawn and sunrise shoots are what excite me the most: the fleeting magical light in the sky, along with a sense of solitude that allows me to savour the moment without distraction.”
