Love’s journey founders on great expectations A BOOK surely written from the heart tells of a Rosebud couple’s battle to have a baby through IVF and the pressures it puts on their struggling marriage. A true story but with fictitious names, The Baby Makers follows the tortured eight-year journey of former real estate agent and advertising salesman Michael Reid and his wife Connie as they seek to “make” a baby. In love and foreseeing a bright future together, the couple chases a dream believing – on current medical evidence – that IVF provides their only chance of having a baby together: despite each having children from previous marriages. Eventually the harsh reality of what’s involved, the expense compounded by their failures to conceive, and the stresses that evokes, leads to physical violence which tears their union apart. Michael leaves Connie for new love Tania, only to be shown proof that his quest for a newborn could have been achieved naturally in the first place. His new partner’s pregnancy leads him to question the skills and professionalism of the IVF “establishment” and makes his case a national news topic. But the cost is high. This self-published and admittedly “confronting” story is very descriptive and in-your-face, but not without its endearing qualities and folksy charm. Readers will have to accept that it

Moving on after 18 years CATERING company Wise Choice is on the move after being based for 18 years at Mornington Racecourse. “Unfortunately for us, Melbourne Racing Club [which runs Mornington Racecourse] has decided not to renew our contract, which means the end to a fabulous era at the track,” Tony Carter, one of the three partners of Wise Choice said. “Best we get on with business and get on with what we do best, serving the local people,” Cheryl Carter said. She said Wise Choice “started with the three boys who call themselves brothers”. “Although Tony is an in-law, they have shared a special bond, operating a tight knit family business on the Mornington Peninsula and beyond for over 27 years.” Tony Carter, who has worked for some of Melbourne’s leading caterers, teamed up with brothers David and Gary, a schoolteacher and financial banker respectively. “We’re not going too far,” Tony Carter said. “We have purchased premises in Mornington where will set up our new commercial kitchen. “We were all ready for a change and moving back into what we loved most, catering in people’s homes, beautiful marquee settings, and home weddings is what we do best.
