Crafty U3A to go on show FOR almost a year, the ‘Currawong Crafties’ have been diligently sewing, knitting and crocheting for the great U3A Mornington Art & Craft Show on Friday 28 October. Crocheting member Stella Hamilton is pretty proud of her beautiful rug, and is hoping a grand-child in the not-too-distant future will be able to pass it on through the family. Her rug is made up of ‘lots and lots’ of wool – some new, some self-spun and some unravelled from garments owned by other family members, including her mother-inlaw. It is an instant family heirloom, filled with memories and connections to the past. Led by tutors Margaret Thompson and Jeannie Bridger, the ‘crafties’ have been working on their ‘challenge bag’ projects which started early in the year when they were given a bag containing a piece of Christmas material which had to become part of a project. Ms Hamilton, who has been a U3A Mornington member for 11 years, has enjoyed language courses as well as painting classes, but her biggest delight is belonging to the crafties – which, she says, is “more than just a craft group”. “The friendships have been a great support in some difficult times.” The U3A Mornington Currawong Campus 2016 art and craft show is on Friday 28 October 10am-4pm, at 5-17 Currawong Street, Mornington. Wishful thinking: Stella Hamilton is putting her heart and soul into crocheting a magnificent scrumbled rug heirloom for a great grand-child who hasn’t even been born yet.

All stops out in preparation for bushfire season VICROADS will be undertaking a range of maintenance activities all over the Mornington Peninsula from now as it prepares for the coming bushfire season. More than $550,000 will be spent on removing dead and dangerous trees, cutting low branches over roads and reducing fuel until the end of the year. This work will include fence-tofence grass mowing on all rural arterial roads to cut the large amounts of fuel generated by a wet winter, and to ease the risk of a fire spreading from road reserves to adjacent land. Maintenance work along Balnarring Rd will begin this week. VicRoads regional director Aidan McGann said inspections had been carried out over winter to determine the most at-risk areas on the peninsula. “Our maintenance team works closely with Emergency Management Victoria, fire authorities and local councils to assess the areas of greatest risk and determine our priorities for maintenance works,” Mr McGann said.

“Bushfires are unpredictable, so we want to provide the safest environment possible for residents and road users as temperatures rise over coming months.” Mr McGann said VicRoads had also sponsored a Living with Bushfire Community Conference to hear from leading industry experts, including fire ecologists and community emergency groups. It was held last weekend at Lilydale. “We’ll do our best to prepare our environment for bushfire season,” he said. “But we also need to ensure that our community has a greater understanding of bushfires and how they can best protect themselves and their community.” VicRoads says it will monitor the conditions of arterial roadsides to ensure maintenance minimises bushfire risk. To report a road hazard, call VicRoads on 13 11 70.
