B Y S U S A N M E R C E R H I N R I C H S , R E P O R T E R , T H E M O O N VA L L E Y TAT T L E R The ivories of the musical instrument long have held an allure for Moon Valley pianist, teacher and piano teacher Valerie Thomas. It’s a love she’s nourished and in which she’s flourished over the years, still playing regularly with incessant delight. It’s feelings -- emotions -- turned into musical peaks; it’s a flowing sense of wellness -- of humanity, of joy -- all themed with careful key stokes and strikes, phrasing a thought or a memory and all turned into a flow of beautiful, enticing sounds. But surprisingly, her first foray into the realms frequented by the great classical and later modernist pianists began with her accordion. Keyboards had yet to be invented and watching the Lawrence Welk helped steer her toward the instrument, too. One year, after a Yuletide-season drive with her Father around their town, the thenyoungster arrived home to a great surprise -- an upright piano. That encounter marked the start of a now decades-old relationship. And incidentally, Thomas says a niece living in California now owns that same piano and that she, Thomas, even has played it recently. Thus fortified with music, Thomas earned double-major degree in education and music from Northern Arizona University. Over the years, she’s added the role of piano teacher to her resume – a role allowing her to share her mastery and delight of the instrument with her students and the community. Today, her students of all ages, visit Thomas’ studio to learn, relearn and hone skills with the tutelage of this fine musician. Some current students stem from families whose members already have learned the joys and artisanship of music from her. Take Jackson Kohorst-Hannon, age 7, for example. His uncle took lessons from Thomas and now, from all appearances, the youngster is a natural playing the keys, too. “It inspires me to play for other people,” Jackson says. He already can play some tunes without looking at sheet music. His favorite Christmas

tune is one the fictional cartoon-and-movie characters, the Chipmunks, chirp during the holiday season “. . . because it’s all funky,” the Archway Classical Academy of North Phoenix first grader says with a grin. “He’s jumped right in,” Thomas says, adding Jackson played in Halloween recitals last year. He gave his rendition of some Christmas carols during various holiday home recitals for student’s parents, too. And Jackson’s New Year’s Eve plans included some hoped-for time playing piano with the same uncle who led him to Thomas. Jackson’s Mom, Jennifer Hannon says, “He always has been interested in music and in performing. He’s always been quite musical. He’s kind of got a knack for it.” Thomas says of Jackson and her other students, “Kids like to explore -- not just the acoustic piano, but the digital piano, too.” And about playing randomly, or so-called banging on the keys, the music teacher adds insight. “When they (any of her students) do that, they’re absorbing things . . . during those moments they’re not just hammering away, they’re learning, exploring sounds, rhythms, beat. I don’t consider it banging on the piano.” “You want them to practice what they’re supposed to, but you can also allow for that.” Young Jackson calls that part of the process his “fun time.” Another of Thomas’s students, Melak Mengesha, also age 7 and an Archway Classical Academy first grader, didn’t know Jackson attended his school until he and the lad both played piano selections during that recent Halloween recital. Thomas encourages her students to develop stage presence during recitals, allowing them to take a microphone to introduce themselves and to talk about their music. She says Melak is a natural when it comes to being on stage, performing solo or with a group. “For such a young age, he’s not afraid to help out (others on stage.) He does a really good job playing” solo or with a group. Music from the Star Wars movies is a favorite of Melak’s. He’s played piano for two years now and works on percussion-instrument skills with Thomas, too. Such versatility, the music instructor says, enables students to play a range of roles in group performances. Continued on page 3...

The Best Christmas Gift Came from the Chimney! On Christmas Eve, Adrienne’s daughter, Leslie, arrived about four in the afternoon, with her new cat. She and the cat had met on the street, and he was a large, older cat with the “Wisdom of the Night” in his eyes. They bonded and she took him in after a few days. Finally out of the cat carrier after a 5 hour ride, he ran around the house looking for something, but we didn’t figure it out until midday Christmas. He ran down the hall, meowed at the door to the green room, and then sniffed his way back to the great room still in search of something. Leslie went into the guest room, Adrienne went into her office, and I was left standing in the center of the great room watching the cat. I turned around to see something on the TV, and heard a slight noise around the fireplace, but when I turned back around there was nothing out of place. While trying to identify what made the sound, Leslie came back, asking, “Where’s my boy?” “He was just over there near the corner,” I replied.

“I don’t see him!” The cat had totally disappeared in a flash. Adrienne came back and we started to search with more detail, yet still no cat after 20 minutes. Every bed looked under and every nook and cranny checked again. I even took the flashlight and looked up the chimney, but the 3 ½” opening seemed far too narrow for the cat to get through, plus he’d have to jump straight up and avoid the flames of the burning fire. I had turned off the gas fire just in case he had made it up to the soot shelf above the firebox. I knew he could NOT get up the chimney because there was nothing to claw going up. It was an almost sleepless night for all of us. Just after 1 a.m. Adrienne called me to say there still was no cat. Over and over it seemed to me the only place the cat could have gone so quickly was up the fireplace, fire or not. “I can’t get over thinking the cat is sitting up in the chimney,” I told Adrienne. “I agree! Can you look?” Adrienne asked. I got my angle mirror, but soon realized I had to get a light up above the shelf edge. I modified a clip-on light and slipped it up over the ledge. With the mirror, I looked around, finally spotting him in the far left corner! He looked at the mirror, then the light, moving only his eyes. I couldn’t see the rest of him, but there he was! “I think I should call the fire department,” Continued on page 3...

Thomas explains the piano stands in the percussion-instrument realm, since its hammers hit or strike the instrument’s strings, the way a percussion instrument reveals its sounds with a rap on a surface. ”The live performances give a lot of opportunities to develop the child,” Thomas says. Melak’s sister, Maya, age 9, also is one of Thomas’ students, playing for about three years. The youngsters’ Mother, Sangeeta Mengesha, says Maya already has composed her own song lyrics and is looking to set them to music. “In writing their own music, sometimes they’ll bring it to me,” Thomas says of some students’ creative musical endeavors. “And I have to be careful about it, because . . . a teacher can go in and change it, and then it’s not the student’s creative piece.” “I like to have them show it to me, even if the notes aren’t correct.” In tandem, the student and the teacher will look at the piece. Thomas also can introduce visual aids, like pictures, during lessons and ask the how the composer would like to have people experience the piece. Aromatic odors also can provide stimuli for the creative process, she says. From there, she’ll ask students how they want people to feel when listening to their music. Such also aids students when they listen to others’ music, too.

Adrienne said, heading to her office. Leslie was overjoyed! We talked about how to get him out. Finally we agree the fire department would be a good call. Three wonderful firemen arrived at 10:30. After assessing the situation, they got their giant ladder. Two of them went up to look down, and sure enough, there was the cat, not moving or twitching. They use a long pole to see if they could scare him over to the front edge, but he didn’t move a muscle. One of the firemen came down and started to explore how to reach him, finally getting his arm up and over the ledge. With guidance from above, he finally put his hand on the cat! He couldn’t grab it yet, so when he pulled his arm out to explore another position, he looked up at me and said, “I need to warn you the cat might be dead.” I don’t need to explain how that went over with Leslie; “I thought you said he was alive,” her eyes narrowing, glaring at me. “I saw his eyes move, and if he was dead they’d be closed!” I replied. The fireman repositioned himself and began to reach back into the corner. The fireman on top gave him guidance until finally he had his hand over him. He pinched the cat and started to pull him out of the corner. “Wow! He jumped back!” he cried. “This cat is definitely alive.”

Angie Maggiore, age 10, another of Thomas’s students, is a Painted Rock Academy fifth grader who’s been one of Thomas’s students for three years. “Angie is one of those students who was eager to get out the gate,” Thomas says, adding the youngster played in her first recital after just four months under Thomas’s tutelage. “I like playing and hearing the different sounds of the piano,” the youngster says. “And how wonderful it can sound when you put notes and chords together. It just sounds beautiful.” Her favorite composers are classical ones, especially Johann Sebastian Bach. “A lot of life coaching goes into being a piano teacher,” Thomas says. “A lot of things they’ll carry with them through life happens right here in the studio and in the shows we do.” As extra insight, Thomas says her among favorite pianists are George Gershwin and Claude Debussy, who, respectively composed “Rhapsody in Blue” and “Clair de Lune.” She’s also a fan of current-day Chinese pianist Lang Lang and has praises for a Moon Valley-area pianist, Dr. Lynne Haeseler. We all finally exhaled! It took two firemen, inside the opening, reaching up and finally the Chief said, “I got him!” He brought out a gray dirty cat and set it on the floor. The cat jumped to get back into the fireplace, so he grabbed it again and Leslie went over to hold him. He had been a light blond cat, and now was totally covered with soot! He was definitely alive! He was just fine, other than being scared. She put him back in the cat carrier as we started to clean up the mess. I went and got a scrap of plywood to cover the opening, the firemen went to lower the ladder and gather their radios. Leslie went out to get the litter box and the minute the cat heard the sound of the litter box, he was all about getting into it! We realized this was probably what he was looking for eighteen hours before! Leslie was overjoyed! We were all overjoyed. “Now I know what to call him,” she cried, “Santa! I am calling him Santa!” “Santa Claws!” we all laughed. The Joy of Christmas had returned!

Trapped In Moon Valley LET TER FROM THE EDITOR Happy New Year, by now all of your holiday decorations should be put away, the resolutions well under way, and our travel plans and bucket lists penciled on the calendar. It is always a very exciting time of the year for me. I have made lists of all the things I would like to accomplish this year, places I want to go and set personal health goals. Now, the work begins…. Remembering it is really truly up to ourselves to make this happen, not our staff, partner, or family, YOU… have got to be accountable, although we hope all those around will support and assist when they can in reaching these goals. I recently read it is best to share your goals and dream publiclywrite them down for the current year, it generates respectful pressure and motivation to achieve your goals, not only exciting you but loyal followers as well. The act of writing by hand is actually a memory aid as well, and many are suggesting we go back to the old fashion “day timers” to help keep our lives in order. If you pick up a favorite pen and a creative beautiful paper book you are likely to remember more without even looking at a calendar. What is old is new again, and studies are showing this to be very engaging and a brain boost as well. Back to the goals: “Any road will get you there, if you don’t know where you are going” so the first step in creating a goal is to figure out what you want, creating the target, and dreaming. This is the fun part, think big, but take the time to frame and document these goals. And then, celebrating your successes as you hit the benchmarks along the way. On the journey, it is important to keep the vision in front, and remember why we want it in order to continue to feed the motivation and determination to work towards it. They say, “To be among the most successful people you must down your goals”. My goal today: is to stop by Staples and purchase a new colorful calendar, and start documenting all goals and more importantly the successes!!

Phoenix is Experiencing a Renaissance BY CO U N C I M A N B I L L G AT E S , CO U N C I L D I S T R I C T 3 On January 4, the city of Phoenix held the 2016 Inauguration Ceremony where I was pleased to join Mayor Greg Stanton, Councilwoman Thelda Williams, Vice Mayor Daniel Valenzuela and Councilman Michael Nowakowski as we were re-elected with our fellow Councilmembers Jim Waring, Laura Pastor, Sal DiCiccio, and Kate Gallego in attendance as well. I look forward to another four years serving as your Councilman for District 3. Public safety continues to be my number one priority as a councilmember, however, as we enter 2016, I am inspired by the Phoenix I see rising. Phoenix took a major hit during the Great Recession. I commend our city staff and manager for taking tough but necessary steps to reduce costs and find efficiencies. We are now saving over $103 million per year through efficiencies and savings measures but I know we need to do more. We must increase our energy savings, sell city-owned property, and use technology to help people work smarter and communicate with our residents more completely and easily. Economically, I am encouraged that Phoenix is experiencing a renaissance. In the past year, over 1,400 new jobs were created and a total capital investment exceeding $22.4 million occurred in District 3. There are over 180 additional single family residential homes are planned, additional townhomes, and multifamily residential ownership and rental projects entitled. Moon Valley continues to see the renovation of the Safeway Center. Arizona’s

largest Fry’s Marketplace is rising from the ashes of the old Lund Cadillac site on Bell Road, and the old Western Digital building is a mixed use project that will have multifamily, single family homes, and retail including Kneaders Bakery, Café Rio, and emergency medical services. Along the North 32nd Corridor, VIP Airsoft is entering the old bowling alley, a bouldering gym will occupy the vacant Ozzie Ice, and we will have additional announcements this spring. Already open are BoSa Donuts, Karsten’s Ace Hardware, and the groundbreaking for 31 single family homes just north of BASIS. The downtown and midtown areas are becoming burgeoning hubs of activity. Since 2009, over 2,290 residential units have been built with another 2,769 residential units currently under construction. In the midtown area, new businesses occupied over 2 million square feet of vacant office space. I want to thank our police officers, firefighters, Block Watch groups, PNPers, and everyone who continues to keep our community safe. Since 2009, the crime rate has actually decreased, even though we have 500 less officers than just a few years ago. I look forward to working with our police and fire departments to ensure they have the resources they need to keep us safe. I am excited about this new Phoenix, and privileged to sit on the Council at a time of such great transformation. I believe that if we continue to work hard, use technology to become more efficient, live within our means, and provide exceptional customer service to our residents, the potential for this city is unlimited.

Moon Valley Magic Lies in Borrowed Traditions

I loved Leah Weber’s idea of ‘Traditions’ for the December Tattler. We have many, though I suspected our boys probably couldn’t even name one. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that they can and most definitely do appreciate them! I’d guess that most people’s traditions are borrowed from family or friends or magazines and books. I certainly didn’t think of ‘crowning’ our Christmas tree all by myself. I got it from a book I got at a bible study. Saving all the Christmas cards and passing them around the table during our Sunday night dinners and then praying over the families is another idea I got from the bible study. Gary and I came into this marriage 31 years ago with our own family traditions and compromised; merging and coming up with our own. I loved this idea of recording traditions so much that I had my students’ type up their family traditions. I am compiling their best work to put into a hardbound book. I found reading their different traditions very interesting and since I want them to experience more of the world outside their own home, this helps them go in that direction. I’ve seen too many people with the attitude of, ‘This is how we do it at my house’ as if it’s the only way. I don’t want my students to go through life like that, let alone my own kids. I’d suggest that you write down what your family traditions are; not just for prosperity, but to send in to the Tattler for NEXT year if they do it again. It’s never too late to start a new tradition, one that you borrow from someone else to mold in such a way to fit your family. Happy 2016.

The holidays were another great time in Moon Valley. We had family visiting from out of state and so we took them for a tour of the community luminaries and holiday light displays on Christmas Eve. There were hundreds of cars and trucks with trailers, boats and other ways to carry holiday revelers. It was a very festive evening. We also toured the Phoenix Desert Botanical Gardens where a joyful atmosphere was created with luminaries, a mountain side of fiber optic lights and holiday music – well worth the trip! Once again, many Moon Valley residents went over the top in their holiday home decorating – with the top 30 receiving award recognition from our MVNA board & volunteer judges. Our tradition of holiday lights and luminaries brought out many people to view them and also to donate to our annual holiday food drive. Our 2nd annual food drive was a great success this year as we topped our goal achieving 1,100 pounds of food donated to the Desert Mountain Food Bank located just to our south in the Sunnyslope community. Ron Wyckmans again led this project with help from members of our MVNA board and MV neighbors. This year local businesses pitched in to partner with us to collect food donations. Hats off to Shehara Smallwood of Edward Jones Investments who with her customers led all businesses with nearly 200 pounds collected! In addition, thanks to Moon Valley Postal, Wells Fargo Bank, Lookout Mountain Veterinary Clinic, Moon Valley Cleaners, Moon Valley Nursery and Dr. Aaron Verbarg DDS who all combined to collect 300 pounds of food. It’s great to see our residents supporting these local community businesses. Thanks also to our neighbors who hosted food donation boxes and to all neighbors and visitors who donated over 600 pounds of additional food. This is a great project that shows how our community gives back to those in need, especially during the holiday season. Thanks to the entire community for a great 2015 and I look forward to an even better 2016. SELFIES B Y T E R R Y R A T N E R , R N , M F A What do you really look like? Aren’t you the world’s leading authority on the subject? After all, we’ve looked at ourselves and studied our faces for years, not to mention with a life-or-death intensity, in all magnifications—lighted car visors and rearview mirrors, unrippled ponds, and old photos. I’ve even glanced at my face through an oven’s mirrored trim, the rim of my washing machine, and once I turned on my iPhone camera to take a peek after applying a new shade of hair color. We are the keen observers of our looks, familiar with our individual faces with the exception of recent rhinoplasties, facelifts, injections, or just plain aging. That’s when the familiar becomes something of a surprise each time we glance at our reflection. Think of it as this: We’re all scientists interested in the laws of motion, particularly of gravity. You are also the least qualified person to know what you look like—you’re too close to the subject, too prejudiced about the possible outcome; a new blemish, a rash on your forehead, or pink hive surfacing on your left cheek. The amazing part is this: you have no idea as to how you look from the outside, the way others see you because you have to use your face to view you—a nonnegotiable quirk of the human anatomy. You are both the observer and the observed. Everywhere you look, people are whipping out their phones and snapping ‘selfies.’ Girls gathered at the edge of the ocean turn to each other and begin organizing the best shot of the group, oblivious to the beauty of the waves crashing on shore, or the changing of the ocean’s color from deep gray to neon blue. They’re focused in a different direction—on themselves. Go to an exotic place of your choice and observe what is being recorded for the sake of history. It isn’t the Japanese gardens in Portland, or the beauty of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, nor the uniqueness of D.H. Lawrence’s home in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire England—it’s the face or faces of individuals gathered there. Why are we so fixated on our faces, together or alone? What are we recording? Are photos from our phones some sort of proof that we are capable of relationships with friends and family even if we aren’t able to communicate with one another?

Or is it just another diversion from one-on-one interplay, intimacy, or connection? We can easily switch from one photo to another whenever we feel the need. We bond with our selfies like they were people flying in for a visit, stopping by for tea; folks we haven’t seen or heard from in a while. Do we really believe our Facebook friends posting photos, happy birthday messages, or short anecdotes are actually our friends? If you’re lucky, a small percentage might qualify as bona fide friends. Do we think we can send a selfie to someone and connect with them in a meaningful way? Perhaps it’s considered a prelude to actual bonding and allows us to continue to ignore opportunities to grow closer—in a way that may take time, thought, effort, and energy. It’s easier to Instagram, text, tweet, or Facebook for hours at a time, never thinking about the recipient with any degree of understanding. When we look at received photos, it’s as if we’re gazing at an exhibition at a gallery; a place where we can only guess at the artist’s motives for taking the photo, similar to what we do when we view paintings. But there is still that profound distance, disconnect, loneliness that lurks between us and the photo; a space in time, a longing to know more, to listen in, to stand closer, to hear a distinct voice with all its inflections, feel a gentle touch, lean over to kiss them, or reach out to someone human with our phones tucked away in a purse or a pocket, ringer off. Those of us who are unhappy with selfies, myself included, distain them not for the reasons they say they do—the vanity, narcissism, primping necessary for perfection, but more because they isolate this basic discomfort at the center of human life. We not only present ourselves, but we think about the presentation. Now when I’m tempted to post a selfie on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, I refuse to pose and instead unleash myself (unselfies) to the world with a face obscured, by a mask, a mist, unexpected motion, or a blurred vision of myself forcing the observer to look a little harder.

SAFEWAY’S TRANSITION UPDATE

BY FR O S T Y K R O E N I N G , A M O O N VA L L E Y R E S I D E N T After watching Safeway’s transition process for several months, I decided to try to find my way into the changing store. It is, after all, the closest grocery store to our home. Large signs direct shoppers to the ENTRANCE, which is a tunnel of plywood with signs on it (see photo). Inside, the aisles are much like they were before. Staff members remain friendly despite all the commotion outside. I talked with store Manager, Mike Houston, who asked that we be patient with the transformation process. The building is about 40 years old and needs much updating for safety and aesthetics. What we see on the outside will be echoed on the inside of the structure. Lots of nails are being pounded and changes in shapes and design of the building are taking place. (A veritable mountain is going up on the front side.) The building owners COULD put a space with tables or a restaurant in adjacent to Safeway but that is yet to be determined. We have needed a meeting place like that since AJ’s left. Mike said that the Pharmacy will be enlarged with a place to sit while waiting for prescriptions. The parking lot will be reworked. People may have to slow down a bit as there is a lot of congestion. But, hopefully, the new store will be a greatly improved shopping experience. Safeway is trying hard to bring shoppers more choices such as organic foods. There will be another aisle of frozen foods. I look forward to seeing the new store completed by summer. I am glad that Safeway is seeing fit to invest in our community. It is always fun to see neighbors there for short visits. Question: When will stores offer drive-through milk, eggs, lettuce, and bread windows? Just a suggestion so people don’t have to get out of their cars to pick up a few essential items. Could such a window prevent congestion in the parking lot?

GROWING UP & WHAT TENNIS TAUGHT ME

BY JOSHUA BRANYAN, DIRECTOR OF TENNIS, GOLD KEY At 10 years old, I was already at a crossroads. I had tried baseball. It was too much standing around. I had tried soccer. It was a lot of running, but with only the occasional (and most times, accidental) goal scored. My big brother, my idol at the time, played a sport called tennis. So, that was the next sport I tried. It was everything a 10 year old could want. I got to run around and hit a ball every two seconds. I got instant gratification, in that points were quickly won and lost. Did I mention I got to hit stuff, a lot? I was instantly addicted. What surprised me, years later, were all the skills and life lessons I had learned out on the tennis court. One of the most important things I learned was probably self-reliance. Out on the court, it was my opponent and I, and that was it. I didn't have a coach calling my plays. I didn't have a group of teammates to depend on. It taught me how to figure out ways to win on my own. Other important life skills I learned were honesty and integrity. I didn't have umpires or referees to call the ball in or out. It always came down to me to make the correct call, even if that meant losing a point, game, set or match. Finally, the single most important thing I learned from tennis was how to win and lose. In tennis, I would win a point, and then seconds later lose one. The highs and lows came quickly, but tennis taught me how to deal with that. In life, things don't always go my way, but I know how to handle the highs and lows because of an amazing sport I learned at 10 years old.

YOUR CORNER ON TAXES Edward M Osinski CPA, EA New Year, New Chance to Resolve Tax Problems If you owe a lot in back taxes to the Internal Revenue Service, the New 2016 Year should be your reason to finally address your tax problems

It’s that time of year, the time that only comes once every 365 days. Everyone makes their New Year’s Resolutions. They’ll work less. They’ll exercise more. They’ll spend more time with their families. They’ll drink less. They’ll travel more. And so on. Every year, many taxpayers who owe back taxes to the Internal Revenue Service leave an important New Year’s Resolution off the list: They’ll address and settle their tax problems. Is this you? If so, you are among thousands of Americans who owe a substantial amount in back taxes to the federal government but whom, for whatever reason, are choosing not to address this debt. Believe me, as a tax professional, I know it’s hard. I’ve had hundreds of clients come through my door with tax problems, and I know the debt can seem large and looming — insurmountable, even. But it’s not. If I can deliver one message in this column, it’s this: The clients who come to my office and move forward in the process of squaring away their tax issues leave feeling like the weight of the world has been lifted off their shoulder. They come in as Atlas. They leave as an Average Joe. That could be you, truly. If you have tax debt that you have not addressed with the IRS, your chances of facing off against more flexible IRS officials increase greatly if you come forward and make the pledge to make good on the debt and resolve any tax discrepencies.

It’s just like any other situation, really. Put yourself in the IRS’s position. How would you feel about negotiating a settlement with a taxpayer you’ve had to chase down for years? And how would you feel about negotiating with a taxpayer who came forward voluntarily and with the ambition of settling his tax problems as quickly as possible? Of course, you’re going to be much more flexible with the second taxpayer. And if you’re reading this today, knowing that you have unresolved tax issues and/or debt, you should commit yourself to be that second taxpayer. The first thing you should do is to consult a qualified tax professional. I’m one, and I’d be happy to see you. But the most important thing is that you see a qualified tax professional who can analyze your previous tax filings and guide you through the process of negotiating with the IRS. It’s not too late to make 2016 the year you conquer your tax problems. Make the New Year’s Resolution ht now, and then find a tax professional near you.

Women Only… at the Racetrack C A R CO R N E R W I T H C AT H Y D R OZ 2016 Lexus - RC F Sport Female automotive journalists have been complaining for years that when they go on a trip, to test the new models on a racetrack for an auto manufacturer, they hear their fellow male journalists sigh in disgust, as if they are being asked to take down the Christmas lights during a football game. I get a laugh when I look at these men, who think they are Mario Andretti or Jeff Gordon, and can barely high five each other when they return from their “racing” experience. I don’t know why they get so upset having to share the track with the ladies, as all the women I was with couldn’t wait to put their high heels to the pedal. Knowing this, Lexus was smart and generous teaming up with a marketing group called “Heels and Wheels” and flying in the top 20 female journalists in the country to Palm Springs to participate in a 2- day fantastic learning and racing event. We were there to learn about and celebrate “The Lexus Difference”. This included the importance of women in the auto industry, and the influence of all millennial’s buying habits. I was flattered during a meeting that corporate personnel chose to emphasize parts of my book to demonstrate how important women are in the purchasing of vehicles. We were introduced to the F Sport vehicles in no particular order (IS200t, RC200t, GS200t) and my favorite, the RC F Sport. Upon arriving at the Chuckwalla Valley Raceway we were greeted by an all-female professional driver’s team. That was so impressive, there were a few men scattered in to time us and flag us over, but the women did the racing and coaching. I met top women racecar drivers in all fields of racing from stock car to drifting to ice and snow professionals. Lea was my coach and she was a stunt driver in the Alast “Fast and Furious” flick. SED LE Lexus is on a brand-building mission…-it’s steering away from quiet and

The RC F is certainly that: it’s a 467-hp 2-door beauty with excellent handling and free hugs in the driver’s seat. I drove the track about eight times that day and each time my ability increased and my times showed it. I never felt out of control or frightened but each time came back to the finish with a renewed respect for professional and amateurs alike who do this for a living or hobby. The RCF on the road for day to day driving might be more than I can handle, but for any long trips with open road this car handled like or better than any other “German car” in its class. The trip opened my eyes to a few things: (1) A group of like-minded women from around the country really like cars, writing about them and helping women make good decisions in car buying. (2) Lexus listens to their customers and journalists ,and last but not least;(3) It was so nice not having all those men with testosterone and go pros stuck all over the cars.. and raising their hands for Q and A to impress the others and delay us from the cocktail hour. Death by Sugar (Sweetened Beverages)? WELLNESS IN MOTION BY DR. NICHOLAS WARNER Have you made the New Year’s resolution to eat better, and exercise more? Consider how you hydrate. Sugar-sweetened soft drinks, fruit juices and other beverages represent a growing health danger that goes far beyond simple cavities and poor energy; a recent analysis suggests regular consumption of sugary drinks can indirectly lead to death– yes, death. Sound far-fetched? Not really, and here's why: According to the researchers, who analyzed data from studies investigating the impact of sugar-sweetened beverage intake on body-mass index (BMI) and diabetes – and the resulting impact of BMI on cardiovascular disease and cancer, nearly 200,000 deaths worldwide can be attributed to drinking sugar-sweetened beverages. And that's nearly 200,000 deaths every year. Specifically, the researchers estimated that consumption of sweetened drinks contributes to 133,000 deaths from diabetes, 45,000 from cardiovascular disease, and 6,450 from cancer on an annual basis. Sure, the researchers don't establish a direct connection, but keep in mind two things: 1) Excess sugar intake is associated with higher BMI and diabetes risk, while higher BMI and diabetes are risk factors for more serious health conditions and mortality; and 2) Their analysis wasn't a small one; they relied on data from 62 national dietary surveys and more than 600,000 people over a 30-year period. Alan and Pauly Heller have been married for 40 years, they teach marriage seminars, they’ve written a book on marriage, and now that book is an audiobook available on Audible.com. The Moon Valley residents have been certified Couples Communication workshop leaders since 1983. Hundreds of couples have benefitted from their hands-on workshop, in which participants practice communication skills using real issues in their lives. The Hellers published their book The Marital Mystery Tour (AMFM Press) in 2008 using a lighthearted format to deliver "five keys to unlock the mysteries of marriage." Those keys are Comradeship, Commitment, Communication, Completeness, and Consecration. The book follows a couple's adventure as a mysterious guide leads them on a tour of an estate they've inherited (with the words "Your Marriage" adorning the gates). It describes their experience from both the wife's perspective ("Ladies First") then the husband's ("And Gents"). After the death of their 32-year-old son, Josh, from colorectal cancer in 2010, the Hellers wrote an addendum to the book telling how their marriage fared as they went "Through the Fire" of that trial. Rather than republish the print version with the additional chapter, the Hellers decided to record it after Tom Brown, talk show host on AM1360's KPXQ, approached them with an offer to help with the technical end. Pauly Heller and Tom Brown were joined in the studio by Pam Fischer, whose smooth narrative voice has been heard on recordings for the blind through the Arizona Braille and talking book library for six years. Twelve Steps to a Life Financial Peace

Step 11: Revisit, Revise and Update Your Financial Plan

“Only the wisest and stupidest of men never change.” Confucius A pilot does a thorough and competent job preparing and filing a detailed flight plan for his trip from LA to New York City. He follows the plan exactly as he filed it with no variations. However, the plan assumed a 40 knot wind from the south and the wind shifted as he was about to take off to a 40 knot from the north. There is also some very turbulent air at his planned altitude. So, a few hours later the plane lands at the airport. The passengers are relieved to be on the ground, after a very bumpy ride. However, they are dismayed to realize they are in Charlotte, not New York City! The pilot’s response to their complaints: “Hey, I had a very good flight plan and I followed it exactly.” A financial plan is just like charting a course. The sooner we discover the need for modifications, the less disruptive the adjustments need to be and the more likely it is that we will arrive at our planned destination. Revisit At least once each year, you should pull out your plan and revisit the whole thing. Revisit your values and goals, as well as your assumptions and track your actual results against them. You should not only look at the performance of your investment, but the reasons you selected it in the first place. If you selected a particular vehicle because there has been stable management and consistent performance and you find that there was a large shake up in the management team, this would be a candidate for replacement. Make a list of all of the concerns you uncover throughout this step. Also, pull out your action plan, and determine if there are any actions steps you have not completed. Revise The plan needs to be revised if there are any items at all on your list. You should consider what impact each item has on your entire plan. Do you need to change a goal, because an investment has under performed for so long that you may not be able to recover? Have you realized that there was an important personal value missing from your original plan, so that you have to change your goals? Did your insurance (or other expense) go up so much higher than planned that you can no longer save the amount you had planned? Update If we revisit the plan frequently, we can usually make very modest adjustment along the way. Then, update the plan and recalculate our expected outcomes. It always provides positive reinforcement to find out we are on course or actually a little ahead of our plan. When the news is bad rather than good, it is always best to know it sooner rather than later. The adjustments will then be considerably less uncomfortable. Dennis J. Parent University is Coming January 23rd

If you visit the Washington Elementary School District Web site regularly or follow the WESD on Facebook or Twitter (wesdschools), you know that amazing things happen every day in our schools. Whether they are young scientists exploring marine life, future engineers building robots and competing at a state level or budding musicians performing for parents and community, WESD students are actively engaged in learning. We have an opportunity this month for you – as parents, guardians, grandparents and communities members – to be involved in learning, too. Washington Elementary School District (WESD) will host its sixth annual Parent University on Saturday, January 23, 2016 from 7:45 a.m. to noon on the campus of Cholla Middle School (located at 3120 West Cholla Street, Phoenix). Parent University has something for everyone, and you’ll come away with new tools to help your family, your children and public education in general. WESD Parent University is a half-day educational opportunity designed to help parents and guardians assist their children with academics and behavior as well as provide important health and human service information and support. This free event begins with breakfast, then parents/guardians may attend up to three different breakout sessions. Does your child need extra assistance in math? What is STEM and why is it important? How can you support your child in successfully completing his or her homework? Do you wonder about District and State assessments and what your child’s scores mean? How can you help your youngster be a successful reader and writer? These topics and many more will be offered to promote academic success. How can you give your child some freedom on the computer and still protect him or her against cyberbullying? How can you talk to your child about the dangers of substance abuse? What can you do to help your child avoid bullying behaviors? These are a few of the student safety topics that will be presented. Can you actually save money through couponing? What does it mean to parent with love and logic? What community resources are available for families in need? How do you talk to your children about money? How can you become an advocate for public education? All these and other family education classes will be available. Throughout the morning, guests will have the opportunity to visit the Community Resource area where dozens of organizations will provide information helpful to parents and families in the community. Following the breakout sessions, attendees may enjoy a free lunch, sponsored by North Phoenix Kiwanis, and may even win a door prize. Local businesses have donated a 32” flat screen television, one adult pass and one child pass to Disneyland, and two Samsung Galaxy tablets, among other prizes. How Did Moon Valley Prices do in 2015? B Y S H A R O N H E L L A N D, A S S O C I AT E B R O K E R Sales in Moon Valley in 2015 show that Buyers still want to buy in the area, many for the first time however, there are many who are settling for the first time. We continue to be an area of value & opportunity with one generation downsizing and new generations moving in. In the overall Statistics from our MLS listing data for greater Moon Valley sale prices in 2015 generally did come up in value. Sales from 2015 were 423 homes the lowest single family home starting at $185,000 to the highest $1,300,000. In the average of the price ranges were Average Sale price of $410,435 with approximately 2691 sq. ft with average sq. ft price sold at $150.00 per sq. ft. Average days it took to sell those homes was 101 days on market. You do have to remember that where some homes priced right and desirable due to location, amenities or updating can sell in less than 10 days but there are homes, usually priced in the upper $500,000+ that can, and do, sit on the market for a longer period of time, which raises the days on market our longest was 772 days which can bring up the stat days to longer than normal. Overall, Sellers in Moon Valley negotiated with buyers for 5%-8% of the listing sales price. Example $305,000 listed home negotiated 5% the sale price to $289,750. Everyone wants to feel like they got a good value when they purchase a home therefore, unless the home is the perfect price, with everything any buyer could want, it most likely will not be sold at full price. If of course it is so wonderful that buyers are bidding on it, it can go for higher than full price. The moral is Moon Valley is selling 423 homes in 2015 and prices are increasing.

How Can I Improve My Balance So I Won’t Fall? B Y D E B O R A H L A V I N S K Y, P M A - C P T One thing that seems to be on everyone’s list is improving balance. Whether it’s due to a physical condition, weakness from a surgery or illness, or aging--unsteady balance affects one’s activities of daily living. Did you know that falling is the leading cause of injury-related mortality among Arizona residents 65 years and old in 2014? Falling is the leading reason for emergency room visits for those ages 45-64. Those are scary statistics! Falls can be prevented through modifications in the home such as eliminating throw rugs, adding nightlights, and installing grab bars in the shower. Medications, wearing high heels and getting up too quickly can lead to a fall. Famous people who’ve fallen include Paula Abdul (walking her dog), Barbara Walters, Beyonce, Madonna (falling down steps). Building core strength can help with balance by improving posture and alignment. Developing core muscles help stabilize the torso. When wobbles happen, core stabilizer muscles kick in and keep you upright. Weight or resistance band training can help improve balance while improving muscle tone and bone density. Defensive Driving: The Best Defense is a Good Defense

With the holidays in the rear view mirror (pun intended), it’s a safe bet there were more than a few cars/trucks/sport utilities given as gifts. If you received one, congratulations! With ownership, comes responsibility. To follow are some tips intended to help keep you, your occupants, and other drivers around you SAFE. Remember the best way to keep your insurance premiums down, is to not have any losses resulting in claims! Wear Your Seat Belts You wouldn’t think this would be an issue, but 3 in 4 vehicle ejections result in the death of the person thrown from the vehicle. People not wearing a seat belt are 30-times more likely to be ejected. Seat belt use applies to every person in the vehicle, not just the driver! Think Defensively Control Your Emotions- Road Rage is a killer, pure and simple. Driving mad or in a big rush may cause you to say/do something you’ll later regret. Be courteous, another couple of minutes of drive time won’t change your life, but a confrontation might! Have an Exit Plan- Anticipate situations before they happen to you. Don’t get ‘boxed in’ or follow too closely. If an object falls in the roadway, you’ll need to steer-clear. Keep an open lane in case you need to go ‘hard right-hard left’. Don’t Assume You Have Right of Way- That very well may be the intent, unless the other driver ignores the sign or simply takes over the road. Expect the unexpected, always. Speed Matters- Follow the speed limit. Keep appropriate distances from cars in front. Driving at Night Check Your Lights- Make sure all light system are functioning properly. Have a friend help check brake lights and turn signal indicators. Check high-low beam on headlights. Don’t Stare- Don’t look directly into oncoming lights. Temporary blindness could result. Be mindful and courteous to others, use high beams only when necessary. Distractions, and Drowsy Driving Texting and Phone Use- Don’t do it while you’re driving. You could die. Get Your Rest- If you’re on a trip, make sure you’re well rested. Nodding-off, drifting lanes, missed signs, or wandering thought could mean it’s time for some sleep. Make Pit Stops- Take a break every couple of hours. It’s good for circulation, and can help reduce fatigue. Trade-off driving with others in the car. Carry a Safety Kit Be Prepared- Have a fully-charged cell phone with charger, carry a first aid kit, water, snacks, and reflectors/flares. Be ready for any emergency.

When to Review and Renew Your Estate Plan BY LI B BY BAN K S, T H E L AW O FFI CE O F LI B BY BAN K S, PLLC Life can be unpredictable, and change is always on the horizon. You may have put in place a wonderful estate plan, addressing all the essentials: Avoiding probate, minimizing taxes, assuring someone to care for you and your assets if you are incapacitated and passing on your assets as easily and inexpensively as possible. Changes in your life may affect all your careful planning. So when should you review – and possibly renew – your estate plan? The Big Four of Life Events – Marriage, Divorce, Birth and Death It seems obvious that if you get married or divorced, you need to change your plan. Yet often, a client is coming to me years after they married, with a plan that doesn’t even mention their spouse. Unfortunately, I’ve also had to console the spouse who finds out too late that her husband not only failed to change his will, but also left his life insurance to a former spouse, a sister, or worst of all, a girlfriend. If you are leaving a marriage or a long-term relationship, make sure you leave new estate planning documents in place too. Marriage comes with lots of planning for the big day, and it’s easy to put off the work of planning your newly combined estate. After all, you’ve just begun a new life, who wants to think about the end? I like what a client of mine recently said: “I figure if I get the plan in place, I won’t need it for a long time!” My advice: you’ve pledged your love to this person and committed to the marriage. Now put your money where your mouth is and commit to protecting each other with an estate plan. The birth of a child is also an occasion to change your plan, or put one in place if you haven’t done so yet. You’ve brought a life into the world, and want to protect him or her. Protection includes making sure things are in place for their care if you are no longer there. A death, while bringing grief and paid, also often brings an inheritance, or changes the distribution your plan makes. If your estate has suddenly expanded due to a parent leaving you money or property, it’s vital to take a look at how it affects your plan. to make absolutely certain that is trust. A local estate planner can advise you about whether your existing plan requires any changes. Although some laws are consistent throughout the country, many states have unique laws that you need to consider in your estate plan. Arizona, for instance, is a community property state. Forty other states are not. This can make for a big difference in how your estate is handled. Likewise, Arizona has no inheritance or estate taxes. Many other states do. If the plan you put in place in a previous state has a complicated scheme to avoid estate taxes, you may want to change that now that you are an Arizona resident. You may be able to put a plan in place that is much simpler and easier to administer. Changes in the Law Of course, one of the changes that can make a difference in your plan is nothing you brought about. The federal or state law may change, making a change to your plan a necessity. In Arizona, the trust code changed in 2008. Now you can make some distributions in ways that weren’t a good idea in the past. If your Trust was put in place before 2008, a review is a very good idea. In addition, the federal estate tax exemption was raised to $5.43 Million per person (adjusted for inflation) in 2012. The estate plan you put in place to avoid the much lower threshold for taxes may not be needed. Again, you may be able to put in place a far simpler plan that is easier for your surviving spouse and children to administer. A Review Every Three to Five Years I recommend that my clients review their trusts with me every three to five years. That way, we can discuss any changes in their lives and in the law. If a change is needed, we may be able to do a simple amendment. If something major has happened, we can amend the entire trust. We tailor the change in the trust to the change in your life! NCL College Prep 101 B Y M A D I S O N S A FA , C L A S S O F 2 016 With just one semester left of high school, seniors are finally beginning to finalize their college plans. Deciding which college to attend in the fall, where we will be staying, who our roommate will be, what to study, what activities or sports to partake in, whether or not we would like to participate in Greek life, and so many other decisions that come with going to college. Making all of these decisions can be quite daunting for teenagers who still have to raise their hand and ask to go to the bathroom in high school. College is a place where people truly get to be on their own and make their own decisions for the first time, but without guidance, this can lead to chaos. That being said, the Moon Valley Chapter of National Charity League, Inc. (NCL) Class of 2016 is so grateful to have had the support of its local chapter to prepare us for college life next fall. With the majority of us joining NCL as 7th graders, the idea of college has been a prominent yet distant topic. At first, it seems like college is so far away that you don’t even need to worry about it, but time truly does fly by. Without the guidance of NCL, many girls would not be introduced to the topic of college for many years to come. As the years quickly go by and college discussion becomes more and more relevant, NCL truly focuses in on all aspects of college life. This past year, we have had speakers come to discuss the application process, standardized testing, essays, and many other topics. However, NCL does not only focus on finding and getting into the right college, but being happy and healthy in college. In my opinion, one of our most important speaker’s to-date was a police officer who came to talk to us about our personal safety in college. In the coming months, we will also have speakers regarding nutrition and exercise to allow us to stay healthy in college. NCL truly cares about each and every member’s well-being which shines brightest in how NCL prepares its seniors for college life. I am sure the entire Class of 2016 would agree with me when I say that I do not know where I would be in my college decision process without NCL to help guide me through it. NCL is a philanthropic organization with 209 chapters in 23 states that all share the mission of fostering strong mother-daughter relationships through community service, leadership development and cultural experiences. Class sizes range from 7th to 12th grade. Last year alone, the Moon Valley chapter provided more than 6,000 hours of service to our community and was selected as the Outstanding Chartered Chapter in 2013. When is a tea not a tea? While we tend to call any infusion prepared with hot water TEA, only those made with the leaves of the tea plant “Camellia Sinensis” are truly teas. Infusions made with other botanicals such as mint, hibiscus and chamomile are called Herbal Infusions or Tisanes. Tea’s history spans over five thousand year and was in the beginning strictly a medicinal drink. Other botanicals, roots, leaves and flowers have been used for thousands of years as well and many legends surround the beginning of herbalism. In China, Emperor Shen Nung, who is also credited with the discovery of the tea plant, was a passionate herbalist and very interested in the healing powers of plants. During his life time he studied and catalogued over 200 herbs and wrote about their benefits and medicinal use in the first herbal encyclopedia called “Pen Tsao Ching” (The Classic of Herbs). Today, more than 3000 herbs and their healing properties have been studied and many drugs used in western medicine are derived from herbs. Did you know that the active chemical in Aspirin (salicin) was first discovered in White Willow Bark and was later extracted as acetylsalicylic acid from Meadowsweet, an herb used in the 19th century to reduce fever and relieve pain? The heart medicine “Digitalis”, from the herb Foxglove and the asthma-aid “Ephedrine”, from the herb ephedrea are all very good examples for the healing powers found in nature. In everyday life, we are all herbalists to some extend or another. Who has not fixed a cup of peppermint tea (…oops…”tisane”) to soothe an upset stomach or relied on lavender and chamomile to bring relaxation to a busy mind? While many herbal remedies are safe, such as aloe for minor burns, or clove oil for fast, temporary toothache relief, they also have their limits and it is always wise to talk to your physician about the incorporation of specific herbals into your diet and lifestyle. Unlike tea which has caffeine, most herbals are naturally caffeine free and therefore a great alternative for those who have to abstain from caffeine or simply want a relaxing cup in the evening. I would pretty much assure you the definition of a good neighborhood has many facets but probably the most prevalent would be safety. Crime statistics are easily obtained city wide. As a Moon Valley resident since 1970 the values have slowing moved upward with normal appreciation. Back then the houses were selling in the $50,000 range. As we grew from Moon Valley1 to 29 subdivisions in our area alone, our pride of ownership has attracted people. They are willing to support us and our growth, invest money in keeping their properties up dated. They also invested their time and energies in community organizations. Having supported the initial structuring of the block captains and now striving to build a strong Block Watch infrastructure, would you agree it is worth that much of a difference vs. an area that does not embrace this caring! We need more supporters with an active block watch group and/or those that walk or jog for those extra set of eyes day and night. We have the tools and the free training. REVERSE MORTGAGES, Once Suspect, Can Be a Useful Source of Cash in Retirement THE WRITE STUFF BY GERRY JOHNSON Originally appeared in an article by Donna Rosato, printed in the January/ February, 2016 edition of Money. I couldn’t say it better. “Financial planners have long regarded reverse mortgages as an option of last resort for cash-strapped homeowners in retirement. The loans - which let you borrow against the value of your home but don’t require repayment while you’re still living in it – have had a reputation as costly, complex products that put your family at risk of losing your home. The stigma has lessened lately. Thanks in part to new rules for these governmentbacked loans, experts such as economics Nobelist Robert Merton have endorsed them, especially as a source of emergency funds. “There’s a totally different way of thinking about these now,” says John Salter, a professor of personal financial planning at Texas Tech University. Here’s what you need to know about a reverse mortgage. Your age is a factor. Your loan . . . can amount to about 50% to 70% of our home’s value, depending on your age and other variables. The older you are and the more equity you have in the house, the more you can get. A 70-year-old in a $300,000 house, for example, might be able to borrow about $173,000 before subtracting upfront costs such as a mortgage insurance premium and any balance owed on a preexisting mortgage. (Estimate your borrowing limit at reversemortgage.org.) You’ll have a safety net. You can take the money as a monthly payment, lump sum, or line of credit to tap as needed. Financial planners say the credit line is

usually your best option. You’ll pay a floating rate on the withdrawn money, now around 4% - about the same as for a traditional home equity line of credit. But unlike the case with a HELOC, your borrowing has no set time limit. Your lender can’t reduce your credit line; in fact, it will grow over time. “Maybe you’ll never use it, but if you have a financial shock or health care crisis, it’s there,” says Salter. Costs have dropped. While reverse mortgages are more expensive to set up . . . they have come down in price. In 2013 the initial insurance premium was cut to 0.5% of a home’s value, down from 2.5%, provided you limit your borrowing in year one. That’s a saving of $6,000 on a $300,000 home. Your spouse is protected. In the past, if only one spouse was listed as a borrower and that spouse either died or moved – say, to a nursing home - the reverse mortgage had to be repaid soon or the other spouse had to move out. A new rule, implemented last June, lets a non-borrowing spouse stay in the home as long as it’s still his or her primary residence. You have to be at least 62 to take out a reverse mortgage, so if your spouse is too young to be a borrower, now he or she can’t be kicked out. You can still get into trouble. If you fail to pay property taxes or home insurance, you can still lose your home. So if you’re already stretched financially, downsizing might be a better option, says Steven Sass of the Center for Retirement Research.” If this piques your interest, find a mortgage loan officer that is knowledgeable about reverse mortgages and explore your options. There is no charge to talk – if there is, find another guy.

Bruno has the special ability to attract a crowd with his famous Old English Bulldog wiggle, adorable under-bite and outgoing personality. I recently wrote about the Art of Moving. Now I’d like to discuss the Art of Writing. Believe it or not, I am still writing with two more books written over the past twenty years plus a reprint. You will hear more about these e-Books soon. First, let me suggest that there are at least two methods of writing: one is learned, the other is self taught. I fall into the second category. After several years as a minister, then more as a college administrator and faculty member, I went back into the pastoral ministry where I remained until I retired twenty years ago. It was when I inherited a page on our church monthly journal in the ‘70s when I started. Not sure what to write, I discussed a pet peeve: watching slides or a movie that were out of focus. The gist was simple: you didn’t have to smash the projector. Rather, a simple tweak could often restore lucidity. This applied to people as well. The result was titled Out of Focus with several monthly editions. An editor ran across it and wrote asking if I would rewrite their outdated book The Christian Boy’s Problems (1949). I looked it over and replied that I’d give it a try resulting in Letters to Chip (1969). The publisher tried in vain to find an author to pen a similar book for girls so I gave it a try with Letters to Cindy (1971). Some time later I was asked to preach in the church where I grew up. Wondering what to do, I spoke twice on couples, one from the Old Testament, the other from the New. An editor was in the audience and approached me with the idea that this might make a good book. He asked me to pen a few sample chapters and send them to him. I did, but the editorial committee dismissed it. I took the same samples and sent them to another publisher who published it plus four more books and several pamphlets. Ironically, while on duty in Sweden, I was teaching a class on the Parables in English in a Swedish Seminary when a publishing representative from the U.S. heard about it and asked me to send copies of my lectures to his company. The Parables (1978) was born. Before too long, things began to change for writers like me. What emerged were many factors including the publisher’s ideal for a writer would be someone who is a celebrity (well known) with a sizable audience . . . but many of us don’t qualify . .
