Appendix A: Full Game Rules

TA SUNGON MO’NA Navigating Change GAME RULES Story It is the year 2030. Global disasters have disrupted food and fuel imports to the Mariana Islands, leaving people to canoe for travel. You and your neighbors have gathered on Guåhan to figure out what to do. Suddenly a large albatross lands in front of you. A taotao mo’na! It speaks: “I have flown here from the furthest Gåni Island to warn you. More disasters are coming. You must help protect each island to ensure a future for us all.” The taotao mo’na leaves you with a map and a coconut sprout, before taking off. Your Goals 1. Keep the Marianas Health Meter (coconut sprout) as high as possible, 2. Build up climate resilience on every island, and 3. Travel around and return to Guåhan. Team Values Uno hit: We are one and this is home. We are connected to each other and to the land. Collaboration: We make this journey together. We are stronger when we grow the bigger “we.” Stewardship: We take care of each other, our people, our planet, and ourselves. Generosity: We only pick what we need and we always leave something on the plate for others. Game Structure The game ends after 4 rounds or 40 minutes, whichever happens first. Round 1 is the year 2030; each round represents 5 years passing. Choose Your Player You can play as a Healer, Youth Organizer, Elder, Navigator, Community Organizer, or Farmer. (Tip: Add your own twist or rename your character, like “Engineer” or “Musician”!) Game Setup 1. On the game board, start your team’s canoe on Guåhan. 2. On the Marianas Health Meter, set the coconut sprout at 15. 3. Pick 3 Action Cards from the deck. (Tip: Show your cards to your teammates; you can strategize together!)
