FEBRUARY 2022
Tournament Season Has Arrived!

“There is almost no limit to the potential of an organization that recruits good people, raises them up as leaders and continually develops them.” -John C. Maxwell
Dear Mirabel Members, February is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on our Club’s shared values, specifically “commitment to our community.” Charitable giving is a hallmark of our Mirabel Family; the time and effort our Members dedicate to charitable causes is commendable. The Annual Desert Foothills Food Bank Luncheon took place this past week, with another record-setting year of donations. Congratulations to all of the “Mirabel Women” who came together to make this happen! This month also marks the beginning of Hope for the Cause. There are so many folks involved in the planning, organizing, and executing of these events. I know I speak for all of us when I say that I cannot wait to see how our Mirabel superheroes “unmask cancer” over the next several weeks. We are all very grateful that we are able to host these events in person at the Club this year. Activity has begun to swirl on the Human Capital front. I have certainly learned a lot from the discussions of our “HR Think Tank” group over the past few months. In this competitive marketplace, the ability to be innovative and differentiate Mirabel as an employer of choice is key. Applicants referred by our existing employees have traditionally had the highest rate of success in terms of recruitment and retention. Because of this, we have incentivized, and rewarded our employees with a referral bonus, the amount of which is based on how long the referral stays at Mirabel. To take it a step further, we have now implemented a “Sign and Stay” bonus which will be paid out over time for new hires filling critical positions, specifically culinary and grounds. We have enhanced our website to attract more prospective employees to the beauty and culture of Mirabel, and are looking at other ways to streamline the application process, such as texting to apply. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the turnover rate in hospitality hovers at 70 - 80% annually; we are mirroring the industry at 70%. With seasonality and an annual turnover in some of our departments, the statistics make sense. In this challenging labor market, recruiting needs more attention and dedication; we cannot do what we have always done to achieve new results. We are presently exploring new approaches to recruiting Team Members, including investing more into social media platforms as well as interviewing firms who can assist with this process. We are presently down six total employees on the golf course, and five in the kitchen. As you can understand, that puts tremendous pressure and stress on the existing team and leadership in these two areas. We are working hard to solve this and we hope to make some great progress very soon, without needing to make additional operation adjustments.
Our first-quarter financial results are very strong, despite the current challenges of escalating labor and supply costs. This is partially due to a very sizable water credit received from the City of Scottsdale. Dan Sengstock, our CFO, will be publishing our quarterly financial results for you to review on our website. Please keep an eye out for a communication on this topic. As we continue to navigate the waters of COVID-19, we appreciate all of your support and understanding of protocols. The temporary mask mandate put in place for January has been lifted for Members and guests. Out of an abundance of caution, we are temporarily requiring masks to be worn by our Team Members. With your support and the efforts of our Team, especially as of late, we have been fortunate to remain open and avoid disruption to operations. However, with any new surge, we must be able to pivot at a moment’s notice. We will continue to take necessary precautions to protect our Team Members and continue operations for our Membership. From a facilities standpoint, we have a few highlights to mention. The pool project is completed and looks fantastic! We hope you are pleased with the updated look as much as we are; the resurfacing was much needed. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we completed this renovation over January. This work was completed on time and on budget, which is always a positive, especially during these times. As you may have noticed, our parking lot lighting project is underway. The lighting of the trees and the bridges has been completed, beautifully enhancing visibility in these areas during the evenings. We are anxiously awaiting the delivery of our bollards and path light fixtures to further brighten all walking paths throughout the parking lot. We have experienced some delays with the fixtures, but we are told they should be arriving soon. We look forward to welcoming you, your families, and your guests over the next several months. As always, if anyone has any suggestions or ideas, my office is always open! See you at the Club! Marcie Mills, CCM

Dear Mirabel Members, Happy February! It’s wintertime in Scottsdale, and that means Barrett-Jackson, the Waste Management Phoenix Open, the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, and Cactus League Spring Training! If all of this isn’t enough to keep you busy, we’re getting ready to kick-off our 2022 golf invitational tournament season with the Prickly Pair Couples’ Tournament beginning on February 5. We’re ready for full calendars and fun events that we haven’t seen in nearly two years. The social membership waitlist continues to grow as there are now three who have completed the vetting process, as of publication, and we are processing an additional five applications. Four of these will go on the golf waitlist once they are able to attain a social membership. Additionally, we are processing three golf memberships with real estate sales, which will close late winter/early spring. As I mentioned in the January POST, movement off of either waitlist now depends on resignations. We did have one resignation in January which allowed a Social Member on the golf waitlist to upgrade, which in turn allowed the first person on the social waitlist to attain their social membership. Since Social Members are given preference on the golf waitlist, the majority of prospective Members interested in joining Mirabel have been opting to go on the social waitlist first and then going on the golf waitlist as Social Members. What this is allowing for is a stabilization in the length of the golf waitlist; when a Member can upgrade, that social membership goes to the first person on the social waitlist, who will then go on the golf waitlist for a zero-net gain or loss to the golf waitlist. I’d like to recognize resigned Member Ronald Barry, for his years of Membership; he will be missed. I’d also like to congratulate David & Joan Crockett on their upgrade to golf! Please join me in greeting our newest Members who joined since January:
Jim Carona & Heather Sacre Flagstaff, AZ/Indian Wells, CA Jim is originally from Albany, New York, and graduated from Harvard University. Always a martial artist, Jim left snowy Albany for the sunny climes of California and opened a Tae Kwon Do studio in Orange County, (which is still operational to this day, now being run by one of his black belt students). In the mid-90s, while running his karate business, Jim (along with Heather) ventured into the art business, relocating to, and opening a gallery in, Palm Desert, California, Heather James Art & Antiquities, specializing in ancient and cultural art from around the world. A short 25 years later, the renamed, Heather James Fine Art, has evolved into a world-class enterprise with galleries and consultancies across the globe and specializing in Post War & Modern, Impressionist & Contemporary Art & Photography. In addition to daily karate, Jim is an avid golfer, loves sports, fitness, fine dining, learning, teaching, and animals. Heather, born and raised in California, attended UC Riverside and Chapman University, earning degrees in studio art and psychology. She taught elementary school for several years before venturing into the art business with Jim. Mostly retired now, Heather enjoys weekend drives, fine dining, painting, fitness, the occasional nine holes of golf, learning, and spending time with friends and her two cats. Jim and Heather are Arizonans on a full-time basis, spending most of their time in Flagstaff at Pine Canyon. When the weather turns cold, they currently head to The Vintage Club in Indian Wells for the sun and are looking to Scottsdale as their permanent warm-weather home. After numerous forays to different area clubs, they settled on Mirabel as their choice to call home due to the beauty of the club and the surrounding desert and the incredible friendliness and welcoming spirit of the Members and the staff.
As always, if you have friends or colleagues that you think would love being a Member of Mirabel and you would like me to reach out to them, please let me know.

CLUBHOUSE Alycia Bozzani| Clubhouse Manager
Did you know that Mirabel has 125 Team Members in total? Have you ever wondered who those are that make up that 125? Of course, it is easy to meet and get to know those Team Members that you see regularly, but what about those that have more of a “back of the house” role? Last month my article touched on all the new and existing front of house employees in the Dining Room. This inspired me to use my POST articles to highlight a new department each month. I felt this would be a great way for our Members to get to know the Team behind their experiences club-wide. Often times, the term “heart of the house” is used to describe those back of the house roles that may not be seen but still play a crucial role in our Members' experiences. One of the key departments that truly encompasses that “heart of the house” role is our Culinary Team. That is why they are my department highlighted for this month! Some of them have had a long tenure here at the Club, and others are newer to our Mirabel Family. All of them have been incredible assets to our Team. On average, this department is operational for 81 hours a week! They are not only responsible for our breakfast, lunch, and dinner services, but also all food services in the Locker Rooms (continental, soups, etc.), On-Course, social and private events. The rock stars that make up our Culinary Team are:
Maria Araiza
Jon Hearnsberger - Executive Chef, 5 Months Seth Mieszcanski - Sous Chef, almost 4 Years Maria Araiza - Morning Supervisor, 17.5 Years Karla Castillo - PM Sauté Cook, 5 Years Cecilio Munoz - AM Line Cook, 4 Years Glenn Baldivia - Pantry Cook, 4 Years Jessie Sabia - 10th Tee Cook, 2 Years Josefina Navarro - Pantry Cook, 3 Months Terrance Thames - AM Line Cook, 3 Months Arturo Rivera - Dishwasher, 1 Year Jose Martinez - Dishwasher, 1 Year Javier Tello - AM Dishwasher, 8 Months
We certainly would not be a success without each of the individuals in this department. I hope this helps you all get to know the wonderful individuals behind all of your food and dining experiences at Mirabel! Also, as promised in my article last month, please join us in Congratulating the following Team Members on their employment milestones this February: Faustino Vasquez - Grounds Crew, 18 Years Sabrina Malinasky - On-Course Attendant, 4 Years Jose Martinez - Dishwasher, 1 Year Steven Wells - Server Assistant, 1 Year Helena McGinn - Hostess, 1 Year Lastly, in January, my article touched base on our exciting new reservation system. The official switch-over was projected to be by the end of January. Unfortunately, our new official roll-out date will be on February 8. We sincerely apologize for the extra week's delay. We hope you will enjoy the ease of use of our new system. Please take a look at our Clubhouse Corner weekly email for a tutorial from JONAS on how to use the new system. If you need any further assistance with the new program, please feel free to reach out as I would gladly assist. As always, if I can be of assistance in any way, please do not hesitate to reach out! See you all around the Clubhouse! Alycia

It is hard to believe that we are already into February. It is nice to see the activity at the Club picking up again and we are looking forward to a busy month. Here are some upcoming events that you will not want to miss: • • • • •
February 12 – Valentine’s Sweetheart Dinner February 13 – Super Bowl Tailgate Party February 15 – Speakers Forum and Dinner February 22 – Daou Vineyards Wine Tasting and Education February 24 – Thirsty Thursday – Hole In One Celebration Comfort Stations
As most of you know, Gatorade has been in short supply. We've finally been receiving shipments again; however, other items are now out of stock. You may have noticed inconsistencies in items such as sliced apples, hummus cups, and Uncrustables. We are finding that although we use three different suppliers to acquire these products, they all run out of the same items at the same time. Until supply chain issues are resolved, we will stock the comfort stations with a variety of snacks that may change from day to day. Feel free to let us know if any new items become a new favorite. Mirabel Wine Online Have you all been able to check out the new Mirabel Wine Online ordering system? Yes, that is correct, and with a few clicks you can order that wine and enjoy it in the comfort of your home. You will find this new link on both the home page and dining page of the Mirabel Website and the Mirabel App. Wine Pick of the Month Beaulieu Vineyard “Georges de Latour” Cabernet Sauvignon This is one of the old school iconic vineyards that put Napa on the map of the wine world. It has been a benchmark Cabernet where they take great fruit from Rutherford and use traditional wine making methods to create this full-bodied wine and a special treat to drink. I have been a huge fan of this wine for many years and have been fortunate to drink vintages from 1977, 1987 and 1997 and loved them all. The 2017 Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is ripe, fruit-forward and voluptuous, with brawny dark fruit aromas of blackberry, dark plum and black currant. Hints of delicate violet and black pepper spice also support the lush fruit, showcasing the depth, concentration, and balance of this extraordinary Cabernet. The 2017 vintage in the Napa Valley was smaller yielding but high in quality. The region enjoyed much needed rain during the winter months ending the drought. A short period of warmer than usual temperatures during Labor Day weekend accelerated harvest for early ripening grape varieties, resulting in an intense and, at times, unpredictable harvest. Perfect for producing a wine with beautiful fruit and tremendous concentration of flavors, highly saturated color, and plenty of complexity. Grab a bottle when you are at the Club next time.

FEELING
HEALTHY TOGETHER IN MOTION
Jenny Hill Fitness Director & Personal Trainer February is American Heart Month. Here are a few tips from your Mirabel Fitness & Wellness Team for a healthy heart. EXERCISE TO SUPPORT YOUR HEART Choose an activity that makes you feel good. It can be walking, biking, dancing, swimming, hiking, low-impact aerobics, and golf! When we exercise, our body releases endorphins. Endorphins interact with the receptors in our brain that reduce the perception of pain and trigger positive feelings in the body. Use exercise to strengthen your heart and feel healthy. Sign up for our annual "Leap for Heart" Fitness Event on Friday, February 11. TAKE TIME TO RELAX AND REJUVENATE IN NATURE Stress is bad for the heart. At least once a day, if you can, go outdoors and connect with nature. Breathe in the fresh air and feel the sun on your skin. Doing anything outside, whether it’s taking a hike or walking the neighborhood, significantly reduces stress hormones and lowers blood pressure, which benefits your heart. Mirabel Hiking Club offers two hikes this month. The moderate hike is coming up on February 7, leading to Cone Mountain and Sunset Point. The intermediate hike will be on February 28 (details to come when we get closer to the date). CONNECT WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY Connecting with others helps you keep a positive attitude even in the middle of stressful life challenges. The heart is the seat of your emotions; it’s where love, bonding, connection, and intimacy originate. By spending time with others, you have the opportunity to give and receive love, and that’s good for the heart too! Tennis and Pickleball Mixers are a great opportunity to connect with other Mirabel Members. Come to the Valentines Tennis Mixer on Friday, February 11 or the Pickleball Mixer on Saturday, February 12. EAT MORE HEART-HEALTHY FOODS Certain foods are heart-protective because they contain Omega-3 and other healthy fats, critical vitamins and minerals, fiber, and phytonutrients that help keep heart tissues healthy. Here’s a partial list of foods you should eat more of: salmon, ground flaxseed, oatmeal, black or pinto beans, raw almonds, raw walnuts, and brown rice. Among the especially beneficial heart-healthy fresh fruits and vegetables are: orange vegetables, spinach, broccoli, tomatoes, asparagus, orange fruits, and blueberries. POOL RENOVATION Over the month of January, we had the Pool Renovation. Our pool now has superior stone quality, pebble-tec surface, that is extremely durable and simply gorgeous! Please enjoy the lap swimming and year-round heated pool, and Aquatic group classes are resumed. Weather permitting, we will have the Aquatics Event on Saturday, February 19. Stay tuned for more details in our weekly Fitness communication.

During car week in the Valley of the Sun, a group of Mirabel Members enjoyed a preview of the cars going across the block at RM Sotheby’s. Matt Malamut, a representative of the RM Sotheby group, provided a commentary on some of the most unique cars, including a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Alloy Gull Wing. One of the 70+ on offer, this Gull wing is number 13 of 24 Alloy Gull wings produced in 1955. The rarity, absolutely perfect condition, and interesting provenance are expected to generate a purchase price in the neighborhood of $7 million. As I am writing this article for the POST, car week is in full swing with numerous auctions across the Valley. Car auctions have undergone significant changes over the past few years. The auction house generating the most revenue by far in 2021 was Bring A Trailer, an online auction that sold over $830 million in cars. One of the premier auctions, Goodings, will be online with no live auction. Others like the giant Barrett-Jackson, are continuing with live auctions supplemented by phone bidders. Early indications are that prices continue to be strong for certain types of vintage automobiles, while others may be peaking. We will provide a breakdown of the results of car week in next month’s article. On February 15, we will be viewing one of the most extensive and eclectic car collections anywhere. Watch for a notice with details.

A Passion for Purple (Cars)
“When I am an old woman I shall wear purple” and I will drive purple, too! (Not that I am an old woman but I can see it coming.) My current attraction for the color purple goes back 30+ years. I do not remember the genesis of my addiction, but it continues unabated! My first venture into the purple car world was a 1997 BMW 325 convertible in Techno Violet (wish I still had that car). That color is #1 on the list of Best BMW colors ever.
1997 BMW 325
My current passion is a 2021 Cadillac XT4 which started out as a “normal” blue but is now a svelte matte lavender - makes me smile every time I get in. As to the future, I can only dream. Judi Bennett

In fascinating detail, Sam Quinones chronicles how, over the past 15 years, enterprising sugar cane farmers in a small county on the west coast of Mexico created a unique distribution system that brought black tar heroin—the cheapest, most addictive form of the opiate, 2 to 3 times purer than its white powder cousin—to the veins of people across the United States. Communities where heroin had never been seen before—from Charlotte, NC and Huntington, WVA, to Salt Lake City and Portland, OR—were overrun with it. Local police and residents were stunned. How could heroin, long considered a drug found only in the dense, urban environments along the East Coast, and trafficked into the United States by enormous Colombian drug cartels, be so incredibly ubiquitous in the American heartland? Who was bringing it here, and perhaps more importantly, why were so many townspeople suddenly eager for the comparatively cheap high it offered? Facilitated by Bev Holt

We have officially hit our stride this season. The rounds have seen a major uptick and it's becoming more difficult to get an 'ideal' tee time. As a reminder, beginning in February, we have guest restrictions on Wednesday - Sunday beginning at 12 pm. Family Guests can play at any time. If a morning tee time is available 24 hours in advance, a Member with guests is permitted to move up to an earlier time. Invitational Opportunity We have four high-end, multi-day Invitationals at Mirabel. We will be hosting our first one with the Prickly Pair Couples Invitational on February 5 -7 . We start with a really fun Sip & Chip on Saturday afternoon, followed by two competition rounds on Sunday and Monday. If you are looking to play in an Invitational this year, we have limited availability in both the Stampede Men's Invitational (March 13 - 15) and the Pima Rose Ladies Invitational (March 29 - 31). In both cases, you and your partner must have an active USGA handicap. If you would like more information, please check out the Mirabel website or contact a Team Member of the Professional Staff. Club Championship March 2-5 The Club Championship is quickly approaching! We have slightly modified the format for this year's Club Championship. The Overall Club Championship (gross competition) for both men and women will begin with an 18 hole qualifier on Wednesday, March 2 for seeding purposes. The top seven qualifiers will advance to match play. The matches begin on Thursday, March 3 and it is single elimination. The semi-finals will be played on Friday, followed by the Championship Match on Saturday. Spectators are encouraged to come out and watch. The Net Competition will be a 36 hole stroke play on Friday and Saturday, March 4 - 5. Members will be flighted by handicap index and we will use 100% of your handicap index. Men can choose to play the Copper, Silver, or White tee and the Ladies will play the Green Tee. Contestants who lose their first-round match in the Championship flight can play in the Net competition. Sign-ups are on ForeTees. Sign up today! Much Improvement in Score Posting! I would like to thank all of the Membership as well as the Handicap Committee and the Professional Staff for your efforts in reducing our missed score posting to an all-time low of 5%! This was not an easy initiative and there have been many 'P' (penalty) scores that have been posted this year. When we started this initiative, we had about a 20% missed posting percentage. This improvement will certainly lead to more equitable everyday rounds as well as tournament rounds. Super Bowl Shotgun Please know we will have an 11 am shotgun on the day of the Super Bowl, February 13. There will be no events this day, although the Super Bowl Tailgate Party begins at 3 pm. You can sign up on ForeTees for the shotgun.

GREENS
REPORT Jeff Goren, CGCS Director of Golf Course Operations
Mirabel has seen outstanding conditions to the start of 2022. Our goal will be to absolutely maintain, if not improve these conditions over the coming months of our season. January is usually one of the cooler months, filled with plenty of significant frost delays. This year we have been blessed with spectacular weather, so far, which has been ideal for golf and even decent turf growing conditions. So, despite the low sun angle and short days, we have seen continued growth and recovery throughout the course.
We made additional reductions in our height of cut in fairways this past month. Hopefully, this provides a little additional roll to your drives. I also have been very pleased with ball mark recovery on our greens this season. Typically, January can be kind of rough as we often do not see significant recovery. I feel that a combination of great weather and Members doing a fantastic job repairing their ball marks and utilizing the Mirabel Method has contributed. Keep it up as the greens will be firming up as the season progresses and your ball will often release a greater distance from your ball mark, making it more difficult to find. When you address a green, walk the path of your flight towards your ball, repairing the ball mark along the way before marking your ball. If you mark your ball first, trust me, finding your ball mark will be more difficult and it will take you more time. This is the time of year where Poa annua proliferates and if allowed, will quickly take over a golf course within a few years. It appears this year the Poa annua has established itself even earlier throughout the valley. This is likely due to the very warm fall which we had. In December the Poa annua was already becoming well established at clubs around the valley, including Mirabel. Thankfully, due to our programs, Mirabel has a minimal Poa annua
population. We recently completed our second phase of our Poa annua control program for this season. There is a possibility for an additional application, if needed, we will monitor. Our goal continues to be to keep Mirabel Poa annua free! The following shows a picture of perhaps the worst spot Poa annua at Mirabel and as you can see, the herbicide is taking out the unwanted turf while not significantly impacting the Ryegrass.
You may recall that the rabbit damage last year was significant. It was apparent the drought and little vegetation in the desert made the course an oasis for our pesky rabbits. We have taken numerous steps to deter the rabbits or keep their damage to a minimum. We have thinned the desert and thinned areas around the tees. This continues and will be ongoing. We have applied numerous deterrents from smell-based products to organic-based fertilizers to deter them. Some of these applications have been successful in some areas, and others for just a limited time. Rains this past summer have had a beneficial impact on the desert and it appears our rabbit population is much smaller this year. However, we still see some activity, predominately their droppings on the tees. We continue to blow off the tees and it appears we need to increase this frequency. We have also kept our tee mowers at a lower height of cut this year, which also has been beneficial as they tend to pick up the majority of the droppings when they are mowed. We will continue to do our best to keep the rabbits in check. February should bring some great golf conditions, so enjoy and repair your ball marks. Jeff Goren, CGCS
