Just like Milwaukee, we’re not what people usually expect. We’re more diverse. More impactful. More modern. From the stage to the streets, the things we do, we do to bring out the best in our region. Our work is representative of Milwaukee’s rich diversity as we aim to be a theater that is welcoming and inspirational to all.

Note From

Artistic Director Mark Clements

This year, I’m thinking a lot about tradition as we all continue to navigate the aftermath of a life-changing global pandemic. About the importance, value and relevance of the stories and rituals we repeat at certain points of the year and then pass down to the next generation to make their own. One such now twelve-year, valuable tradition for me and my family, since becoming Artistic Director of Milwaukee Rep, is our annual production of A Christmas Carol in the beautiful Pabst Theater. This show has been equally valuable for countless families, some of which have been coming for the full forty-seven years since Milwaukee Rep started this production. Not to mention the small army of artists who have either made their acting debuts here or been part of the show nearly since its beginning. Like actor Jim Pickering (Mr. Fezziwig), who has literally done hundreds of performances of various incarnations of this show, playing over twenty different roles over four decades plus.

There’s an importance, I believe, in keeping old traditions alive and celebrating generations past, while making new memories for the young. In being able to mark occasions and the time passing by these events. In finding comfort and happiness in experiencing them year after year. But it’s also important for us to allow traditions to grow, change with the times, and find space for new voices. One of the delights of A Christmas Carol is that even if the way it’s told changes or who’s telling it changes, the heart of the story–of a damaged, selfish, and greedy man learning how to love, heal, share and take care of others again, when offered a second chance to do so–stays the same. It is a valuable annual reminder to us all, to make sure we celebrate every day as some of us celebrate Christmas Day. To live as much as we can in the present, and offer peace and goodwill to ALL people, each and every day of the year.

We’re delighted to welcome a newcomer to our tradition: Milwaukee-based actor Matt Daniels as Ebenezer Scrooge. Matt is no stranger to Milwaukee Rep’s stages, having worked on several shows with us, most recently wowing us in both productions of Titanic: The Musical. Despite being a familiar face on stages across the state, he’s never had the opportunity to be part of the A Christmas Carol team…until now. And we couldn’t be more excited to share his Scrooge debut with you all this holiday season. Matt is, of course, joined by long-standing members of our ACC team, as well as our wonderful Young Performer company who are either returning or making their debuts as well.

I suspect for many of you in the audience, attending A Christmas Carol every year is part of your family’s holiday tradition. For that continued dedication, especially through our darkest pandemic years, we are eternally grateful. Conversely, if this is your first time joining us, then we offer you a huge festive welcome! The play may have “Christmas” in the title, but this brilliant social commentary by Charles Dickens reaches far beyond its religious connotations and speaks to all hearts, asking us to cultivate joy, practice generosity and foster kindness all year long.

May this holiday season find you all warm, safe and full of joy celebrating traditions new and old with family and community. Have a wonderful holiday season and a happy New Year!

#WeRepMilwaukee
Milwaukee Rep acknowledges the remarkable support of these former Rep Trustees who continue their engagement by attending performances, contributing a generous annual gift, and/or membership in the Limelight Legacy Society.
A CHRISTMAS CAROL 51

The gift that keeps on giving.

For nearly 70 years, Milwaukee Repertory Theater has harnessed the power of live theater to propel our entire community forward. We need your generous support this season to continue this work.

When you give to Milwaukee Rep, you give 20,000 students the opportunity to experience live theater for the first time. You give 20 emerging professionals the ability to train with the best artists. You give our community a chance to come together and build stronger relationships. Give the gift of live theater.

Give to Milwaukee Rep.

2022/23 DONORS 62 Milwaukee Rep 2022/23 Season

UPAF IS FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS that you are here to enjoy today. We’re for thousands of local artists in the spotlight and behind the scenes. We’re for you — the audience — rediscovering excitement, inspiration and connection. We’re for Milwaukee, Tosa, Waukesha, Racine & beyond. We’re for being together, surrounded by the magic of music, dance, song and theater.

We’re for raising our community up. You’re for the arts too, so please join us to ensure that our world-class performing arts groups make a full recovery.
