T

he headline of Pew Research Center’s new survey on the presidential race reads something like an Onion headline — an obvious understatement that also happens to be disturbingly true. “Voters Skeptical That 2016 Candidates Would Make Good Presidents,� declared the report, which looked at how voters view the likely leadership of this year’s candidates.

Their findings, as the headline implies, were not good. No candidate had

more than 11 percent of voters say they would be a “great� president. Only one candidate — Hillary Clinton — had more than one-third of voters say she would be a “good� or “great� president, and that was by a hair, with just 35 percent having a positive view.

Meanwhile, the overall view of each candidate was overwhelmingly negative: All of the nine hopefuls included had more people say they would be a “poor� or “terrible� president than would be

a “great� or “good� one. And only three candidates — Clinton, Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders — had more people see their leadership potential in rosy terms, rather than as simply average.

In a campaign that’s brought unusually high attention to outsider candidates and increasingly polarized views of both the issues and the men and women in the race, it’s little surprise to see such distrust about the people vying to be the 45th president of the United

States. But it’s still more than a little discouraging to see what dim views Americans have of the leadership potential for the handful of people who’ve put themselves forward for the job.

You can almost hear a collective cry: “320 million Americans out there, and this is who we have to pick from to lead us?�

It is often said that we are presented with the lesser of two evils at the polls.

Chargers chairman Dean Spanos hired businessman and former developer Fred Maas to head the team’s citizens’ initiative process to get a measure for a new stadium on the November ballot.

Maas is expected to bring a new voice to the team’s long, bitter attempt to replace aging Qualcomm Stadium. He is considered to have a good relationship with City Hall and was the city’s stadium point man under former Mayor Jerry Sanders.

Spanos said attorney Mark Fabiani will continue to be part of the stadium process. Fabiani spent most of last year attacking Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s proposals to keep the team, and the Chargers’ attempts to move to the Los Angeles area angered many fans.

NFL owners voted down the Chargers’ efforts to partner with the rival Oakland Raiders to build a stadium in Carson. However, the owners gave the Chargers the option to join the Los Angeles Rams in a stadium in Inglewood expected to open in 2019.

Although the Chargers agreed in principle to join the Rams, Spanos announced on Jan. 29 that the team would remain in San Diego at least through 2016 in an attempt to get a new stadium. The NFL will give the Chargers and Raiders each an extra $100 million to go toward new stadiums in their home markets. That’s on top of a $200 million loan available to each team.

Spanos and Maas met with Faulconer on Monday afternoon.

Maas will be “in charge of this particular initiative, this stadium effort, going forward,� Spanos said in a video posted on the team’s website.

Maas, a former chairman of the Centre City Development Corp., will advise Spanos on drafting the initiative, picking a location and developing a financing plan that will include a significant public contribution. Maas will work with an established team of legal, financial and land-use advisers.

Spanos said Maas is familiar with the city’s politics and “his knowledge of San Diego as whole will give us the best chance to get this initiative passed.�

Spanos said the team has yet to settle on whether it wants a new stadium at the Qualcomm site in Mission Valley or downtown.

When Maas met with Faulconer’s stadium advisory group last March, he said it would be a no-brainer to build a new stadium in Mission Valley, and that a downtown stadium would take too long and cost too much.

Super Bowl MVP joined Pro Football Talk last week to talk about his big brother.

While the Super Bowl and Peyton’s future endeavors were certainly on the docket, an interesting bit of intel was revealed when Eli was prodded about what it was like growing up together. “You know they were pretty nice to me,�

Eli said. “I think the biggest thing they did, mostly Peyton because you know Cooper is older than him, [Cooper] would pick on [Peyton]. “So I come along, I’m gonna take it. So [Peyton] would pin me down, you know, put his knees on my arms. He’d just start knocking on my chest until I named at the time the 28 teams in the NFL. “So I got smart eventually I could rip those off pretty quickly. We went college divisions, different things and then if he just wanted to make me cry he’d say, ‘Name 10 brands of cigarettes.’ I’m like, ‘I’m 7-years-old I haven’t started smoking cigarettes quite yet,’ but that’s when I’d just start yelling for mom.�

Yikes. Peyton sounds like a pretty typical older brother, but the cigarettes trivia is an interesting touch. It’s like he figured out how to call an audible once Eli had figured out the rest of the insane trivia Peyton had subjected him to.

Well, it’s a good thing the Mannings eventually grew up. Asked which of them had a bigger competitive spirit, Eli said they both show it in different ways. “I think we’re both very competitive. He just has that fiery instinct and that snarl.

We both love to win and hate to lose,� Eli said.

And of course, asked about whether or not his big bro will retire, and Eli said: “I don’t (even) think he knows.�

Marine bags five-peak challenge

AMP PENDLETON — Like many before him, Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Kenneth Bell learned quickly that being a triathlete isn’t about some lofty, beautiful talent — it’s about hard work and dedication.

Late last year, Bell participated in the Mission Trails Regional Park Five-Peak Challenge. The challenge, which takes place in the mountains east of San Diego, is to hike at one’s own pace to the summits of Cowles Mountain, Pyles Peak, Kwaay Paay, and North and South Fortuna — all five peaks in the park. The total vertical elevation surpasses 6,000 feet.

Triathletes and other participants wanted to make it even more difficult and asked event officials if they could run — not walk — the 21-mile course. “I just saw the challenge and thought that it looked pretty difficult, but I wasn’t going to get a running opportunity like that on Camp Pendleton,� said Bell, a helicopter mechanic with Headquarters Co., I Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group. “It took me five hours and ten minutes to cover the 20 miles and all five peaks. It’s still probably one of the most challenging runs that I’ve ever done.�

Getting in shape

“I realized when I arrived at basic training that I had to run almost every other day, swim long distances, go on hikes and do a lot of pushups and pull-ups,� Bell said. “That’s when the physical fitness aspect of my life ramped up. I needed to get in shape.�

Bell completed basic training and went to his first military occupational specialty school to train as a helicopter/tiltrotor dynamic components mechanic. He said he was not content with that job, but wanted to stay in the same field and do more hands-on work. After four years, he became a helicopter mechanic.

Around the same time, the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program was introduced, and Bell said it gave him an opportunity to challenge himself physically.

Lifestyle change

MCMAP combines existing and new hand-to-hand and close-quarters combat techniques with morale- and team-building functions and instruction in the warrior ethos. “My physical fitness peaked once MCMAP was introduced,� Bell said. “That was when I began to focus more on bettering myself, and it became easier when I found friends that had the same goals in mind.�

However, in 2008 Bell deployed to Iraq, where, he said, his training took a backseat. He rarely got to the gym, and, he said, when he came back home he knew his fitness level wasn’t sufficient. He said he decided then to always make his workouts a priority and be a model Marine.

Eventually, Bell said, he stopped associating fitness with his identity as a Marine — it just became a lifestyle. “Physical fitness is my hobby,� he said.

Bell said he wasn’t into physically demanding challenges or the even concept of fitness until he joined the Marine Corps in June 2000.

An Atlanta native, he played basketball recreationally as a teen, but upon arriving at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, he said he recognized that he was not FIVE-PEAK CHALLENGE, continued on Page 13 as fit as he had hoped.

‘DEADPOOL’ WINS FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR

n theaters from director Tim Miller, Marvel and 20th Century Fox comes the most anticipated anti-hero film and all because of “Deadpool.�

Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is a mercenary who doesn’t play well with — well most anyone. For a price he will take care of any problem you may have and do it with relish. It becomes even more exciting when he meets his match in Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) who has the same cutting wit!

Life seems to be going happy between the two until Wilson get’s bad news. Of course when bad news comes there is usually a vulture not too far behind in the form of Merchant (Kyle Cassie). Offering him a way to get better, Wilson decides its far better to stay with Vanessa to do what he can to stay alive.

Enter Ajax (Ed Skrein), an evil mutant who enjoys making more mutants and sidekick Angel Dust (Gina Carano). Immediately Wilson and Ajax show signs of not having a loving relationship. When Wade gets the chance he escape the horror, he heads to friend and pub owner Weasel (T.J. Miller) for help.

That is when Deadpool is born! Discovering his powers quite quickly, Deadpool’s only interest is to find Ajax so as to change him back into Wilson. In the meantime, living with Blind Al (Leslie Uggams), Deadpool keeps moving forward in his goal — and pretty much delights in every moment of it.

The problem also is that there are certain X-men who want to stop him — mainly Colossus (Stefan Kapicic) and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand). When Ajax takes Vanessa hostage, Deadpool loads up and brings his

throws out his lines with quickness and the right amount of venom to make each word hilarious. The jaw dropping that happened for me just made the laughter even crazier and added to the fun of it all.

Reynolds’ physical appearance was frakken hot and although I’m not into old-avocado looking body types — I might have to rethink it after seeing his.

That’s what has been missing for me in this super hero universe and Deadpool had no problem serving it up with ice cream on top!

Skrein as Ajax manages to provide Wilson/Deadpool with all the ammunition necessary for more jabs — verbally and literally. Skrein makes a fairly good mutant bad guy and I wracked my brain as to where I had seen that gorgeous overbite.

Of course it took one smile to recognize him as Daario Naharis from “Game of Thrones� who hit on the Mother of Dragons a few times.

Carano as Angel Dust is such a bad ass I can’t stand it. Of course I have a soft spot for anyone that kicks Michael Fassbinder’s behind as bad as she did in HAYWIRE (if you haven’t seen this fight we can’t speak until you do!). Once again Carano gets a chance to back flip, smack, punch and be as bad as she wants to be.

Kapicic as Colossus tries recruiting Deadpool but you can’t make a bad boy go good, especially after listening to DP’s speech as to why. Hildebrand as Warhead is kinda cute in a rebellious-smart-asssullen-flaming-teen sort of way.

A defense official confirmed the plan published was a draft version provided to members of the Senate and differed only slightly from the final version sent to Carter.

Operation Homefront opens San Diego village Operation Homefront hosted a Grand Opening ceremony Jan. 27 for the new Operation Homefront Village transitional housing location in San Diego.

Operation Homefront is a national non-profit that builds strong, stable, and secure military families. The Village program provides stable transitional housing to wounded, injured, and ill veterans leaving the military and are designed to enable families to heal together, while bridging the gap between military pay and veteran benefits.

Operation Homefront Village program provides wounded and injured service members and their families with rent-free, utilities paid, fully furnished apartments. “In 2015, Operation Homefront served 111 military families in transition through our transitional housing program,� said Senior Director of Transitional Housing Gracie Broll. “Since opening our first Village in March 2008, we have transitioned 453 families to include 724 military children.�

These Villages operate in three locations: Gaithersburg, Maryland; San Diego, California, and San Antonio, Texas.

A new change to Marine Corps policy will require some Marines to wait longer before they are eligible for promotion.

Master Sergeant Chris Lopez is a former Marine Corps drill instructor, combat vet, and father of 3. But if you think he gets in his kids’ face, “Full Metal Jacket�style, every time their common sense goes AWOL, you have a major malfunction. Because, getting 90 recruits to do whatever he wants? Easy. Getting one 4-year-old to pick up his socks? Hard. You can’t treat a toddler the same way you treat a grunt because the toddler is going to beat you in a screaming match every time.

That said, Lopez has a core set of principles that are equally applicable on the parade ground as the playground. You bet your ass he has an opinion on modern day, “let them feel their feelings� philosophies on discipline — and it’s not what you think.

1. The goal is self discipline “When we get a batch of new recruits, we don’t know what degree of structure they’ve had in their lives. We try to set a baseline. Your basic function is to bring the heat, to stress them out, and to be an enforcer,� says Lopez.

Fortunately for your kid, you’re intimately familiar with exactly how much structure they’ve had in their lives, so you don’t need to bring any heat right off the bat (newborn infants are notoriously hard to train, anyway). The long-term goal, says Lopez, is to make sure that your kids are doing the right thing when there’s nobody there to supervise them — not doing the right thing just as you’re about to take away the iPad. 2. But sometimes you need “imposed discipline�

Speaking of iPads, Lopez has found the one that belongs to his son is a useful tool when he’s displaying a lack of self-discipline. He doesn’t make the kid drop and give him 20. Rather, “We do the timeout

thing but it’s usually after some verbal warnings. We don’t do corporal punishment. We go with things my kids are more attached to; if he’s not listening and being polite and it gets to the point where we have to punish, he doesn’t get it back until tomorrow. That’s when it hits home.

To me, it’s the same effect as when I was a child and it was like getting spanked.�

Jeb Bush had more negative views of what kind of president he would be than any other GOP candidate, with 36 percent saying he would be a poor or terrible president.

Meanwhile, 64 percent of Democrats said Clinton would be a great or good president, and only 10 percent said she’d be poor or terrible.

Fifty percent of Democrats thought highly of what Sanders would be like as this country’s leader, compared with 13 percent who saw it negatively.

A Pew spokesperson said the nonprofit did not ask the question broadly in past elections, so the results aren’t comparable to how people saw the entire field at this stage in the race in 2008, say, or 2012. But it did pose the question to Democrats about Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in December 2007. At that time, 78 percent thought Clinton would make a good or great president — higher than the 64 percent who think so now. Yet notably, her 2007 number was also higher than the 70 percent who thought the same of Obama at that time.

Before the results are dismissed as the whims of early election season, it’s worth noting one of the survey’s measures that is comparable to the 2008 election. The percentage of registered voters who say they’ve given this year’s election “a lot� of thought is 56 percent, higher than the 50 percent who said the same in early 2008. GOP voters, meanwhile, are much more focused, with 63 percent saying they’ve been paying close attention, compared with 52 percent at this stage in 2008.

Understand there isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a moment of the film I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like. In fact, the young lady sitting next to me and I were laughing so hard that it is now a moral imperative that I see it again and perhaps even again until I catch every word I could possibly have missed.
