Apex-based artist Andie Freeman first connected with nature as a child spending many quiet moments exploring nature in her small Massachusetts town, and then later as a teenager in Hilton Head, South Carolina. A studio art major at the College of Charleston, Freeman is known for her still life and nature work that captures the personality of the subject matter at hand. During the pandemic, she became captivated by birds. In paintings like Lilac Sky, Freeman paints a vibrant red cardinal—not as a decorative thing, but as a being with spirit set in a whimsical backyard; a nod to her childhood sitting under the trees. Working in a limited color palette, Freeman prefers wet-on-wet oil painting in creating a piece, when possible, in one sitting. This enables her to truly capture a quiet, meditative moment. Freeman is a graphic designer and marketing associate for Arts North Carolina. She is currently the North Carolina Theatre visiting artist, a position through which she created five paintings based on the theater’s 2022–23 productions.
