“It feels like a good day. It has 99 and 22 because it feels good. The line is water because of the smiley face. The water feels good.” — King Nobuyoshi Godwin

In this brightly colored painting by Raleigh-based artist King Nobuyoshi Godwin, a peacock and water form a utopian friendship. Godwin has autism and synesthesia, and associates numbers and colors with feelings. The number 99, one of Godwin’s favorite numbers, is written in yellow and repeated on pink peacock feathers. Pink and yellow, one of Godwin’s favorite color combinations, signals that this scene depicts, as he comments, “a perfect day.” Godwin has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions around the country, at the North Carolina Museum of Art and Charlotte Russell Contemporary in Raleigh, at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, and at the Outsider Art Fair in New York City. About his recent successes, Godwin remarks, “It feels good.” He works from his home studio in Raleigh.
