Raising the Bar Article and Photography by Tom Olsen

After attending automotive events and discussing those events with participants, builders, and industry leaders, one thing is apparent: the standard of the hobby just keeps going up. Fit and finish, upholstery, drivetrains, creativity, and technology levels keep rising…almost monthly, it seems! A visit to a major car show, or certainly the Specialty Equipment Market Association Show known as SEMA, in Las Vegas, will confirm that. Zach and Liz Smith, the owners of StraightLines Custom Restorations, recognize this trend and are adjusting accordingly to stay current with the industry standards. Zach and Liz have owned the business since 2023, but Zach has been an integral element of the business almost since its inception in 2004. Over the years, StraightLines has become a recognized area leader in the

automotive restoration field. Since taking ownership, Zach is determined not just to keep up with trends, but to take a position on the cutting edge of new trends. Continuing to advance in the custom and “resto-mod” world, with an emphasis on detail and functionality, is a priority. Zach and members of his team regularly attend national automotive shows and events with SEMA, Goodguys Rod and Custom, and the Triple Crown of Hot Rodding, as some of the most recent. By participating in these events, they can view firsthand what is happening around the country and interact with key players in the industry. Two recently completed builds showcase the talents of StraightLines’ 13-person team of craftsmen: a 1932 Ford threewindow hot rod and a 1950 Chevrolet 3100 custom truck. The ’32 Ford three-window is a classic hot rod with an abundance of upgrades. This car features an all-steel body: no fiberglass replica here! Extensive metal work was performed on the car, including filling the roof opening with a steel panel crafted inhouse and installing new door skins. The car rides on a custom chassis with classic old-school front-end components. Power

Josh at J & L Premier Automotive in Tea built the engine. Custom upholstery by StraightLines, Dakota Digital gauges, and Restomod Air are additional features. The beautiful leather interior featuring custom bucket seats and door panels is all by StraightLines. Dakota Digital gauges, Vintage Air, and a modern sound system add to the driving experience. The unique Leopard Wood bed is a perfect complement to the stunning custom blended red pearl paint.

Trucks are more popular than ever these days, and a truck like the 1950 Chevrolet 3100 demonstrates why. It rides on a Roadster Shop chassis and is powered by a 525-horsepower Lokar Classic Series LS3 engine mated to a GM 4L80 transmission, also

These are two representative examples of the possibilities available in a build by StraightLines. But it’s important to understand that not all their projects rise to this level. Zach and his team will build a vehicle to the customer’s desire within their budget

limitations. While many restorations involve all aspects of the vehicle, others may be a partial restoration. This might involve finishing a started project, body and paint only, or engine and driveline. Customers collaborate from the initial planning of a project all the way through to completion. Zach believes that it’s important to keep the customer informed as work continues. A continual dialogue between the shop and the customer benefits everyone, particularly as unknowns arise during a project. Most customers stop in the shop regularly to check on their project, and a close working relationship commonly develops between the customer and the restoration team.

To get the process started, Zach suggests a person stop in with their vehicle or with photos of it. He will visit with the potential customer to ascertain what their objectives for the finished product are. The process of the restoration is discussed, explaining options, pitfalls, timing, and, of course, costs. A tour of the shop showing cars in the process helps explain what’s involved. After a thorough discussion and examination of the vehicle in question, a restoration plan is established, and the customer understands the options.

Zach and Liz are proud of their team. All the services listed above have one or more techs that specialize in that area, and restorations are the result of a combined team effort.

StraightLines should be considered a one-stop shop for your restoration needs. Their team of technicians specializes in all aspects of restoration. Services offered include: • Body panel restoration and metal fabrication • Chassis rebuilds, restoration, and upgrades • Painting • Assembly and finish • Sandblasting and rust removal • Upholstery • Wood services • Mechanical service and maintenance • Engine services/rebuilds/upgrades and crate engines • Comfort, performance and safety upgrades

Zach and Liz feel that community involvement is an additional element of success. They are proud sponsors of the Harrisburg Days Car Show; they have a sponsor display in the Toppers Car Show in Sioux Falls, and they participate in other area shows. They also support youth sports teams, with Zach often being a coach. And towards the end of the car show season, StraightLines hosts a popular cruise night at the business. This year’s cruise night will be on September 30. Don’t miss it!

In the continuing effort to stay at the forefront of current trends, StraightLines is regularly adding new state-of-the-art equipment. A recent addition is a CNC router table to aid design and fabrication in the upholstery area. New equipment continues to be added in the metal fabrication area as well.

There are currently employment opportunities at StraightLines. The volume of restoration work continues to grow, and Zach wants to add staff positions in several areas of the shop. Career-minded, talented individuals with skills in auto restoration are encouraged to contact Zach to learn more.

There are currently employment opportunities at StraightLines. This gives you an overview of the operation at StraightLines. Is there a restoration project in your future? Whether it be a “resto-mod,” classic, or street machine, full or partial build, StraightLines is up to the task. They are currently scheduling upcoming restoration projects. Zach invites you to stop in, take a tour of the shop, meet the team, and discuss the possibilities.

THE SECRET TO FINDING

T he Perfect Ride FOR YOUR PERSONALITY

Why Buying a New Car is Important Buying a new car may seem like a luxury or an unnecessary expense to some, but it can actually be quite important for several reasons. Firstly, buying a new car ensures that you are getting the latest safety features and technology advancements. With rapid advances in automotive technology, older cars simply cannot keep up with the newer models when it comes to safety and convenience features. From blind spot monitoring to collision avoidance systems, these features can greatly enhance your driving experience and keep you safer on the road. Secondly, buying a new car allows you to tailor your vehicle to your specific needs and preferences. When purchasing a used car, you often have to settle for whatever is available on the market at that time. But by buying a new car, you can select the make, model, color, and features that best suit your style. Whether you prefer compact sedans or spacious SUVs, there is always something out there that perfectly matches your personality. Lastly, investing in a new car can save you money in the long run. Although the upfront cost may be higher compared to buying used vehicles, new cars typically come with warranties and are less likely to require major repairs early on. Additionally, newer models tend to have better fuel efficiency ratings which means lower overall fuel expenses over time.

In conclusion, buying a new car offers numerous benefits including enhanced safety features and personalized options tailored to your preferences. With technological advancements constantly improving in the automotive industry coupled with potential long-term savings on repair costs and fuel expenses.

Research Research is a crucial aspect of finding the perfect ride that matches your personality. It goes beyond just casually browsing the internet for different models and colors. By conducting thorough research, you can discover important details such as safety ratings, customer reviews, and pricing options. This information allows you to make an informed decision and narrow down your options to find the ideal vehicle that checks all the boxes. Moreover, with advancements in technology, conducting research is now easier than ever before. Online platforms provide access to extensive databases where you can compare different cars based on their features, performance, fuel efficiency, and more. Additionally, many automotive websites feature interactive tools that let you virtually customize vehicles to see how they would look in different colors or with certain add-ons. These resources not only save time but also give you a comprehensive understanding of what each car has to offer before even stepping foot into a dealership.

Think beyond the body and color style

14 THEM OTO R M A R K E T. C O M

In conclusion, research is an indispensable part of finding your perfect ride. Take advantage of the plethora of information available online to thoroughly evaluate various vehicles based on their safety ratings, customer reviews, and other essential factors. With technology at our disposal like never before, it has become easier than ever to make informed decisions which lead us closer to finding that dream car that perfectly matches our personality and needs.

Determine your budget and needs Determine your budget is an essential step when searching for the perfect ride. Before you start browsing through sleek and shiny car models, take a hard look at your finances. Knowing what you can realistically afford will save you from falling in love with a vehicle that doesn’t fit within your means. Consider costs beyond the initial purchase price, such as insurance, maintenance, and fuel expenses. Keeping all these factors in mind will help you set a budget that fits comfortably into your lifestyle.

Another crucial aspect to consider is determining your needs in a vehicle. Are you primarily looking for practicality or luxury? Do you need ample storage space or crave more horsepower under the hood? List down the features that are absolutely essential to fulfill your requirements and prioritize them accordingly. If you frequently commute long distances, prioritizing fuel efficiency might be more important than flashy exterior design. Assessing your needs will guide you towards finding a vehicle that not only matches your personality but also serves its purpose efficiently. When determining both budget and needs, it’s important to strike a balance between aspiration and reality. Remember: Your dream car should not become a financial burden nor fall short of fulfilling its intended purpose. By carefully assessing what fits into both categories, you’ll be well on your way to discovering the perfect ride that aligns with who you are while meeting all practical expectations.

BEFORE YOU SHOP: • Set an all-in monthly budget • Rank your must-have features • Compare safety, fuel, and reviews

Your vehicle should fit your lifestyle. SEPTEM B ER 2 0 2 6

1956 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer Some cars are special because of their rarity. Others are special because of the memories they carry. For Butch Kaaz, his 1956 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer is both.

The story began when Butch was in high school. His first car was a souped-up Ford Model A roadster. It was a fun little hot rod, but Butch’s dad wasn’t convinced it was the best choice. “He told me, ‘You’re going to freeze to death in that thing,’” Butch recalls. About six months later, Butch traded the Model A for a 1956 Dodge, a less fancy version than the Custom Royal Lancer he owns today. It quickly became much more than just transportation. It was the car he drove while dating Judy, long before the two would eventually marry.

Nearly 30 years later, he found another 1956 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer and knew it was time to bring back that chapter of his life. In 2000, Butch and his son, Dan, traveled to Newton, Iowa, just east of Des Moines, to pick up the car. The trip home was anything but easy. They hauled it back through a snow-and-ice storm, but the weather wasn’t about to stop them from bringing home a piece of the past. When they found the Dodge, it wore its original, factory threetone green paint and was powered by the original 315 Poly V8. Like all Custom Royal Lancer models, the car originally came from the factory in a three-tone paint scheme, one of the signature styling features that makes these cars authentic. After bringing it home, the body was soda-blasted, and Dan took on most of the bodywork and paint. Rather than returning it to its original green, they chose a striking red, black, and white three-tone combination, the same colors as the Dodge Butch drove in high school while dating Judy. Bringing the car back in those colors rekindled countless memories from those early days together. The original Poly engine was replaced with a 315 Hemi, giving the Dodge the performance to match its stunning appearance. The Dodge was well ahead of its time, coming from the factory with power windows, power steering, power brakes, and Chrysler’s unique Push-Button PowerFlite automatic transmission. To make it even safer to drive, the original drum brakes were upgraded to front disc brakes while preserving the car’s classic character. The car quickly became a familiar sight at car shows throughout the region. With its striking three-tone finish, distinctive 1950s styling, and meticulous restoration, it has earned numerous trophies and awards over the years.

Butch eventually decided to sell the car in 2005 for reasons even he doesn’t understand. It found a new home with a gentleman in Iowa who appreciated the craftsmanship and enjoyed driving it with his wife. Seventeen years later, an unexpected phone call came. After the Iowa owner’s passing, his widow contacted Butch to ask if he would be interested in buying the Dodge back. There wasn’t much to think about. The answer was an immediate yes. Today, the car is back where many believe it belongs, with the family that restored it. “I don’t even own a trailer for this car,” Butch adds. “We drive it. When we head to a car show, I know every car has its sins, including ours. I drive it because it’s fun and because of the friends you meet along the way. That’s what having a classic car is all about.” That philosophy has served him well. The car has collected plenty of trophies and awards over the years, but for Butch, those have never been the reason for owning her. “The awards are nice,” Butch shares, “but they’re not the point. The point is getting out, driving the car, and enjoying the people you meet.” For Butch and Judy Kaaz, the 1956 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer is more than a beautifully restored classic. It’s a piece of family history that came full circle. What started with a young man trading his Model A for a Dodge he could comfortably drive while courting Judy has become a story spanning decades, generations, and countless miles. After being gone for 17 years, the Dodge found its way home again. And these days, instead of sitting in a garage or riding on a trailer, she’s doing exactly what Butch believes classic cars were built to do: cruising the open road, making memories with Judy, and bringing people together.

TRANSMISSION AND CAR CARE TIPS

FOR FALL

TRAVEL By ArticleCity.com

Each season presents distinct challenges for your vehicle. Summer heat taxes cooling systems and can strain transmissions, while winter cold depletes batteries and thickens vital fluids. Fall occupies a demanding middle ground, a transitional period marked by fluctuating temperatures, wet leaves, early frost, and sudden rain that collectively test your vehicle’s reliability. Proactive maintenance during this season is not merely advisable; it is essential to both vehicle longevity and road safety.

Why fall car maintenance matters

Excellent customer service, nationwide warranties, and everyday low prices.

Key reasons to prioritize fall preparation include: • Wet leaves significantly reduce traction, placing greater demands on braking systems • Reduced daylight hours require fully operational headlights and wiper systems • Cold morning temperatures affect tire pressure and battery output • Temperature fluctuations accelerate wear on transmission and engine fluids Addressing these factors before they become problems is far less costly than emergency repairs. Scheduled seasonal maintenance with the professionals at Graham Tire protects critical systems, transmission, brakes, and tires from cumulative damage that may otherwise go undetected until failure occurs.

Transmission maintenance for fall driving

The transmission is central to safe, smooth vehicle operation. The following practices help ensure it performs reliably throughout the season. Monitor fluid levels: Transmission fluid should appear clean and red, maintained at the manufacturer’s specified level. Degraded or insufficient fluid increases the risk of

overheating and gear slippage. Monthly checks using the dipstick allow you to monitor both color and volume. Fluid that appears dark brown or carries a burnt odor indicates the need for prompt service. Inspect for leaks: Even minor transmission leaks can escalate into significant mechanical damage if left unaddressed. Parking on a clean surface or a sheet of cardboard can help reveal drip patterns. Transmission fluid typically appears red or brown. Any detected leak warrants immediate professional attention to prevent internal damage. Listen for abnormal sounds: Grinding, whining, gear slipping, hesitation during acceleration, or noticeable vibration are all indicators of transmission stress. These symptoms tend to worsen over time and, when left unaddressed, can result in costly component failure. Early diagnosis substantially reduces repair expense. Schedule a professional diagnostic: Many automotive service centers like Graham Tire offer computerized transmission diagnostics capable of identifying electrical, mechanical, and fluid-related issues that may not be apparent during routine inspection. Booking a diagnostic assessment each season provides informed reassurance before extended travel. Follow manufacturer service intervals: Adhering to the service schedule outlined in your owner’s manual, including fluid changes and filter replacements, is the most reliable way to maintain transmission health, preserve fuel efficiency, and protect the manufacturer’s warranty.

Pre-trip road trip checklist

Thorough preparation before departure extends well beyond refueling. A complete pre-trip inspection should include:

1. Tires — Verify tread depth and inflate to the manufacturer’s recommended PSI 2. Brakes — Inspect pads, rotors, and brake fluid levels 3. Fluids — Check transmission fluid, engine oil, coolant, and windshield washer fluid 4. Battery — Test charge capacity; replace if approaching end of service life 5. Lights and Wipers — Confirm all lighting functions work correctly and wiper blades provide clear visibility 6. Emergency Kit — Carry jumper cables, a flashlight, a thermal blanket, and a basic first aid kit

Maintenance practices that extend vehicle life

Consistent, routine care protects your vehicle well beyond any single season. Recommended practices include: • Changing engine oil and filters at prescribed intervals • Rotating tires every 6,000–8,000 miles • Replacing wiper blades ahead of the rainy season • Inspecting belts and hoses for signs of cracking or wear • Maintaining a clean interior and exterior to prevent rust and corrosion

Recognizing early signs of transmission trouble

Identifying transmission issues at an early stage significantly reduces the risk of complete mechanical failure. Warning signs to monitor include: • Delayed or sluggish gear engagement • A burning odor originating from beneath the hood • Unexpected gear slipping or sudden power surges • Illuminated dashboard warning lights If any of these symptoms appear, schedule a professional inspection with the experts at Graham Tire without delay. Early intervention invariably costs less and is far less disruptive than addressing a full transmission failure on the road. SEPTEM B ER 2 0 2 6 23

THE EXTRA MILE

26 THEM OTO R M A R K E T. C O M

“I saw this on the Internet.” Many conversations we hear start with this statement. With the availability of information on the internet today, it’s very easy to get all kinds of ideas on performance engine building. Not all of these ideas are good. This trend started years ago with the hot rod magazines. “Build a 500-horsepower mouse motor for $800,” the headline would say. The articles would promise massive horsepower and torque gains with the newest wonder part if you just followed the instructions. They would lay out a combination so anybody with the desire and cash could apply it to his or her own hot rod and reap the benefits. The instructions were minimal at best, as ability was assumed. The experts, armed with a pencil and a camera, would take you through the whole process in the space of a couple of pages. The time involved and cost of all the parts often didn’t reflect reality. They would have a list of the needed parts and the machining prices they were able to get, but the parts needed for assembly after the upgrades were incomplete or quoted at a dealer cost, and

everybody had a friend who was a machinist who worked for little or nothing. There are benefits in using a quality machine shop to help you with your engine build. The date has changed, but reality has not. Chances are, if it seems too good to be true, it is too good to be true. If quality is your goal, start with quality parts. Often, the same parts that we buy are for sale on the internet for less than we pay for them. Here is a little secret that no one talks about: Not all the parts made are good parts. The “not so good parts” are sold to second-line buyers and sold at a discount. These parts may or may not be repackaged under a different label, and maybe that cheap head gasket doesn’t have an oil or water passage cut on center, and maybe it won’t make a difference. Who wants to take that chance? No one is required to make this information available, and the average consumer doesn’t ask, “Why is this so much cheaper than my machinist or my parts house charges?” We have long-standing relationships with our vendors. They don’t deal in seconds, and neither 722 E. 8TH ST., SIOUX FALLS, SD 605-334-4191 SEHRPOWER.COM SEHR@SEHRPOWER.COM

A Spooky Paper Trail By Bob Schmeichel

Sometimes it feels kind of strange how people wind up with a certain vehicle from its converted beginnings. For my story today, I was given a pile of receipt papers from its present owner going back to its beginning, to sift through to establish his street rod’s history and put it into a story book format. As I went through the information, I felt a strange irony starting with the original owner Philip Bailey in Lakeville, Minnesota who owned a 1934 Ford Tudor sedan. He had bought the original old low mileage car in the early 1990’s at an auction with intentions of building a street rod out of it. He had the car in its original condition for quite a few years and ordered parts for it as he could afford them, all while keeping a budget to keep costs down. The sad thing about it was he died suddenly after about 16 years of collecting what he could afford to build his ‘34 Ford into a street rod, but never saw it happen. Those related to his estate really had no interest in the ‘34 Ford. So, it was put up for auction along with the items he had accumulated to create a street rod out of. As it turned out, Jerry Whitney, from Watertown, South Dakota, wound up buying the car at the auction and had the same idea of building this old original car into a street rod. More specifically, because of what had been collected as parts needed to move forward with the build that came with the car. Once he had everything he had bought together as a package deal back in Watertown, Jerry handed everything off to Randy Gribble at Gribble Welding with a wish list for Randy to build off of. Randy 32 THEM OTO R M A R K E T. C O M

had been a street rod fabricator/builder for quite a few years and knew exactly what Jerry was looking for as far as a finished ride. There is an irony that most people don’t know or understand when they are getting into building a car. If the car is not complete partswise, today’s cost can be a rude awakening. But with Jerry having his own lucrative business, the build happened rather quickly over a two-year time frame. First on the agenda was changing the frame by adding a newstyle Fatman Vintage independent front suspension with disc brakes, Vega power steering, and a triangulated 4-bar mounted 8” Ford Mustang rearend was put in place suspended on all four corners by coilover shocks. If you don’t understand automotive terminology, just bear with me, and you will see cost happen. Next came a 350” Chevy engine along with a 350 transmission with a shift kit. Once the drivetrain was in place, making the car a roller, all the little incidentals that people don’t think about had to be ordered to keep the build moving forward. When you are paying by the hour to have a car built, you don’t want it to sit too long while you are waiting for parts to arrive. Some shops will charge a customer rent while they wait for parts. So, it goes without saying, a customer can spend money weekly ordering parts your builder needs if he doesn’t have them, kind of like having an open checkbook. And if you don’t understand every little thing needed, you are at the mercy of the builder while they are still accountable. Anyone who has been in the business for a while knows where to

I don’t have a lot of the story after the time Jerry Whitney passed get the best quality parts for their dollar. It is worth it in the long run away, but Gary Kelly from Huron, South Dakota, bought the ‘34 for dependability and the quality of the finished product. Midway sedan and drove it until 2024 when he had thoughts to sell it. through the build Jerry decided he wanted the top chopped 2 Terry Jellis of Brandon, South Dakota, got wind of the car being ½” which Randy did. A lot of people don’t realize how involved for sale and with knowing the quality of rides Randy Gribble builds, doing that is to make it look aesthetically subtle and pleasing made an offer that enabled him to be the owner. And now on the outside, but also do the same thing to all the here comes some irony: two years later, in the spring inside window moldings to have the same of 2026, Kevin Kappenman of Sioux Falls, South finished effect. After chopping the top, Dakota, made Terry an offer to buy the car. Randy filled the roof opening with steel Terry accepted Kevin’s offer, and Kevin is the where there was a canvas covering in As I skimmed new owner. And then strangely enough its original opening. I am thinking through the paperwork two weeks later after Terry had been he used a smooth roof portion off dealing with some long-term health of a station wagon of some sorts and receipts that Kevin gave issues, Terry passed away also. without ribs to match up with me, I asked Kevin if this car was the curvature of the ‘34-body front to back and left to right cursed, jokingly, only to have him to appear seamless.

Then you have to deal with having As I skimmed glass cut to fill the shortened window through the paperwork and openings, along with all the hardware receipts that Kevin gave me, I asked Kevin if to make them go up and down. What I am this car was cursed, jokingly, only to have him chuckle while talking about here is just the tip of the iceberg when looking at me with a questionable look on his face and holding his it comes to all the processes of building a street rod, while all hands outward with his palms upward. Even though Kevin doesn’t the needed parts, too numerous to mention are continued to be know that much about his ‘34 Ford yet, he tells me he just loves ordered to complete the car to the end desired picture. how nice it drives and rides down the road while putting a smile on his face with all the attention it gets!! What other fun do you Once Randy had the car pretty well mocked up sheet metal-wise, really need that keeps a person feeling young at heart? he handed it off to his brother Kevin Gribble, who blew the car totally apart down to the bare frame. With that approach, Kevin did all the finishing bodywork, priming, painting, and then handed it back to Randy for final assembly. Now the tedious process really begins with all the plumbing, wiring, and final assembly so everything functions as it should without scratching the freshly painted body. I didn’t see anything in the list of receipts that showed who did the upholstery, but beside the power steering and power brakes, Randy added Vintage AC/Heat to keep it comfortable for hot summer cruises. And then off to an exhaust shop and an alignment shop so it could roll straight and quietly. Once finally done with Randy’s approval, it was handed off to Jerry who drove the car for about 2,800 miles a few summers. Then, unexpectedly, Jerry passed away in 2018.

A farm boy from Salem, Bob’s family moved to Sioux Falls when he was 12 years-old. After graduating from Washington High School, he attended USD, where he majored in Commercial Art. A lifelong auto and art enthusiast, Bob wanted to combine his passions into a career. A self-taught mechanic, bodywork, welder and painter, he worked in the industry for seven years. He later went to work for Horner Waldorf Box Company, where he worked for the next 33 years, retiring as Package Design Manager for Smurfit Stone Container.
