The Big Shrink is a versatile folding panel project that has the ability to be disassembled and reconstructed into different configurations.

Our interest in origami, coupled with our fascination with shrink-wrap, allowed us to begin a thorough model-based investigation to utilize the unique characteristics of each idea. Through rigorous experimentation, we were able to design a panelized system that exploited the tensile properties of shrink-wrap and maintained the structural integrity under those compressional forces. This system allows the user to completely dismantle each folly, isolate the panels, and recompose it into a new form.

PROJECT PROPOSAL :

INTRO: The Big Shrink is an expression of a folly as a moment of experimentation.

Historically, architectural follies are ornamental buildings meant to represent certain cultures or eras that are not native to the site. They are preceded only by the aesthetics of the class of buildings they are imitating.

In this way, follies are mini systems of architectural experiments where typologies are appropriated to fit different programs. The Big Shrink is a product of constant testing and analysis seen throughout the design process. Additionally, through the material studies of the proposal, the process evokes the Socrates Sculpture Park as an urban renewal project, offering a connection with its own history as waterfront site.

The project was brought about through a fascination with weatherized boats that sit on docks for storage. They are wrapped in a polymer plastic film called ‘shrink-wrap’. This material contracts when heat is applied, so that it can envelope the boat in a tight, weatherproof seal. We started studying their profiles, tensile properties, and compressional strength through copious models and iterations. In other words, the overall design for The Big Shrink was developed through intense trial and error experiments.

CONCEPT AND PROCESS: The original concept for the functionality aspect of the project was inspired by origami and the idea that a flat sheet of paper can fold into threedimensional creations. We started the process of finding our system through the manipulation of an eight-foot cube. By making slight deformations in its surface, we were able to find two triangle-based shapes we could use as modules to form our follies.

To reinforce the structural integrity of each panel and to create a more dynamic surface, we used the two shapes we had previously made as a base, and created a convex frame that extended from the center. These plates can be completely detached from each other so that a multitude of follies can be generated from two simple panels.

FOUR FOLLIES: The four configurations in this proposal satisfy different demands of the park. Each proposal has a wide range of programs, ranging anywhere from a shelter to a sales pavilion. To prevent the design from blowing away in a waterfront environment, each tent must be anchored to the ground using stakes or typical tent hardware.

Proposal A is a simple, two-walled system with a small canopy. This design is meant to provide some shading, but will not provide shelter from precipitation. Since it is the smallest of the four proposals, one or two people can inhabit this tent comfortably.

Proposal B is enclosed on three sides. The canopy covers the entire footprint, supplies shade and shelter from precipitation. It can fit two or three people.

Proposal C is a two-walled system. It gives shelter from the elements, while offering a dynamic formal experience as the user circulates around. It is large enough for two to three people.

Proposal D uses three walls to supply shelter. The canopy extends over its whole area, providing weatherproof protection to the user. Three or four people can use this proposal.

MATERIALITY: Early in the project, we were looking for materials that could be repurposed from something else. We became enamored with the characteristics of shrink-wrap, which is usually discarded by boat yards at the end of the season instead of being recycled. We saw this as an opportunity for our project, and began to experiment with the tensile characteristics of the wrap and the structural integrity that would be required of the frame it surrounded.

In order to be able to develop a panelized system that exploited these properties and to create a frame that was structurally sound and could withstand the compression of the shrink-wrap, we needed to use triple walled polycarbonate, a lightweight material. With this “plastic cardboard� we could design a panel that would not rust, rot, mildew, or corrode, but could easily be manipulated to fit our design.

Lastly, we had to find a material that would allow us to easily remove and reattach each panel. It needed to have the ability to stick to itself under any circumstances. We decided that dual lock Velcro would be the solution.

This fastener is similar to the hook and loop system; however, it functions without the hassle of two different parts. Additionally, it is self adhesive, durable, and five times stronger than other Velcro. Because of this material, on-site assembly of the panels is easy.

FINANCIAL PROJECTIONS: Since The Big Shrink uses repurposed shrink-wrap, a significant portion of the material costs is removed. Additionally, the process requires a certain level of expertise, so we will need to have the panels wrapped at a boat yard. The most significant portion of the cost will be spent on the triple walled polycarbonate sheets.
