BIOTECHNOLOGY. AN EARLY ADVANTAGE.
Scientific depth. Practical experience. Exceptional opportunity.
GENIUS at Metropolitan Preparatory Academy brings together molecular biology, genetics and applied laboratory science, giving students an early foundation in a field transforming medicine, agriculture and environmental research. Developed in collaboration with industry professionals and university professors, the program combines scientific understanding with practical laboratory experience. Students engage with contemporary biotechnology while developing the analytical skills, technical confidence and scientific judgement that support further study in the life sciences.
CONTEMPORARY SCIENCE. PROFESSIONAL TOOLS. In MetroPrep’s dedicated biotechnology laboratory, students gain experience with professional-grade equipment and techniques central to modern molecular research. DNA isolation, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), gel electrophoresis and DNA sequencing provide a foundation for exploring genetic analysis, genetic engineering and CRISPR-based gene editing. This laboratory experience connects biological theory with the methods scientists use to investigate genes, analyse evidence and understand living systems.
THE DISCIPLINE OF SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY GENIUS develops the habits that give laboratory work its value: precision, thoughtful experimental design, critical analysis and clear communication. Students learn to assess evidence, recognise the limitations of a result and support conclusions with sound reasoning. Working through scientific problems develops persistence and intellectual independence, encouraging students to reconsider assumptions and refine their approach.
CONNECTIONS TO THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY Through the GeneTalk speaker series, researchers and industry professionals introduce students to current scientific questions and applications. These encounters connect classroom learning with the wider scientific community and broaden students’ understanding of future academic and career possibilities.

GENIUS • BIOTECHNOLOGY
SCIENCE SHAPING THE WORLD AHEAD.
From the molecular basis of life to the technologies changing its future. GENIUS introduces students to interconnected areas of biotechnology, combining laboratory methods with an understanding of their significance in research, healthcare and society.
MOLECULAR BIOLOGY & GENOMICS
GENETIC ENGINEERING & CRISPR
The study of DNA provides insight into inheritance, biological function and genetic variation. DNA isolation, PCR, gel electrophoresis and sequencing connect these principles with contemporary molecular analysis.
Students explore restriction enzymes, plasmids and recombinant DNA principles, alongside CRISPR-Cas9 and its role in targeted gene editing.
Genotyping and bioinformatics introduce the interpretation of genetic information and its relevance to clinical genetics, forensic identification and biological research.
BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE & DIAGNOSTICS Molecular testing, antigen–antibody interactions and diagnostic methods such as ELISA introduce students to the science underlying modern laboratory tests. Students consider how biological evidence informs decisions, and why accuracy, appropriate controls and careful interpretation are essential. The broader scientific context includes developments in vaccines, gene therapy and personalised medicine.
These areas connect molecular science with emerging approaches in medicine, agriculture and conservation, while encouraging careful consideration of the capabilities and limitations of genetic technologies.
ENVIRONMENTAL & INDUSTRIAL BIOTECHNOLOGY Enzyme activity, the conversion of plant material and the scientific foundations of biofuel production illustrate how biotechnology can contribute to alternative resources and sustainability. These investigations connect biology with chemistry and quantitative analysis, demonstrating the interdisciplinary nature of applied science.
SCIENTIFIC ADVANCEMENT. ETHICAL RESPONSIBILITY. Genetic privacy, the use of gene editing and the implications of modifying living systems are integral to the study of biotechnology. GENIUS encourages students to evaluate these questions with scientific understanding, balanced reasoning and an awareness of their wider consequences.
