Fleming, Derrek A. “Tony”, age 47 a beloved son, brother and uncle passed away in his Mechanicsville home on Nov 26, 2013. after a three-year battle with diabetes, congestive heart disease and kidney disease. He FLEMING is preceded in death by his farther Butch Fleming. He leaves behind his loving and devoted mother, Donna Fleming, sister Dana Broadus (Mark), brothers, Darren (Kim), Damon (Brandon) and Danny (Kori) Fleming. Nieces and nephews: Missy Durvin, Kori, Seth, Hanna, Dakota and Ace (Fleming), Eric and Katie (Broadus), Lexi and Pete (Stratiou). Uncle Tony and Lil brother will be remember for his love of computer gaming and auto cross racing. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to America Diabetes Assocation. Service private.
Joyce Handy HANDY, Joyce R., 72, of Mechanicsville, went home to be with Jesus Wednesday, November 27, 2013. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, G. Wayne Handy; daughter, HANDY Cheryl Collie (Charles); grandchildren, Grace, Ben, and Emily Collie; brothers, Jim Robinson (Nell) and Woodley Robinson (Betty); brother-in-law, David Handy (Marie); sisters-in-law, Frances Thacker and Faye East; as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members. Joyce was an active member of Fairmount Christian Church. She lovingly cared for the Community Bible Study children, and retired after 37 years
of service as a Statistical Analyst with the Federal Reserve Bank. Her life was spent serving others with a deep and meaningful faith in Christ, and was a devoted wife, Momma and Nanny. The family received friends on Nov. 30. at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. Funeral services were held on Dec.1 at Fairmount Christian Church. Interment Signal Hill Memorial Park.
George Mehl MEHL, George F. Jr., 69, of Mechanicsville, passed away November 28, 2013. Born October 30, 1944 in Coco Beach, Fla., he was preceded in death by his parents, George F. Mehl Sr. MEHL and Kathleen R. Mehl. He is survived by his loving wife, Alice Mehl; three children, Tim Church, Betty Orlandi and her husband, Bruce, Mark Church and his wife, Kris; seven grandchildren, Devon Church, Brittany Orlandi, Bryan Orlandi, Zander Church, Aaron Church, Karrington Church, Jacob Church; and his brother, Ray Mehl. George and his family lived in Black Creek, N.C., where he and his brother attended Lee Woodard High School. After high school, George studied six years of college-level Mathematics, served four years in the U.S. Air Force and retired from A.H. Robins after 32 years of employment with the company. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 9808 and loved science, research, computers, golf and fishing. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 4 at the Atlee Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, Route 301 and Shady Grove Rd., Mechanicsville. Funeral services are private.
Elizabeth Morrow MORROW, Elizabeth Reynolds Atkinson “Beth,” passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2013. She was lovingly and attentively cared for by her caregivers, granddaughter, Karen Reynolds Gill, Steve Boozer and Michelle Coats. She was born January 21, 1918 in Cleveland, Ohio and was the daughter of William Franklin and Marie Gregory Reynolds. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Atkinson Sr. and Lyndon “Newt” Morrow; her two sisters, Virginia Moran and Hazel Grant; two grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. She is survived by her six children, Carolyn Faye Lipes, Dewey Reynolds (Rebecca), Walter Atkinson Jr. (Jane), Richard Atkinson (Betty), Jesse Atkinson (Linda) and Jimmy Atkinson (Mary). She is also survived by 21 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Beth was an employee at Murphy’s Department Store, Phillips Machinery and Studley Post Office. She was an integral part of the ministry at Enon United Methodist Church in Studley, Va. for most of her life, where she was an active member of Enon UMW and mentored many young women. Beth was involved in numerous community activities, including Mothers of Preschoolers, Studley Ruritans (aka “Grandma Scooter”), American Cancer Society, Hanover Rescue Squad, Camp Rainbow, Camp Occohannock and Hanover Health Care. She was loved and cherished by her family and her numerous friends and will be greatly missed by all. The family received friends on Nov. 24 and Nov. 25 at Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Rd., with services which were held at Bennett Funeral

Jacqueline Oates OATES, Jacqueline S., 55, of Hanover County, departed this life on Tuesday, November 26, 2013. She is survived by her husband, David Oates; two sons, John and Richard; one daughter, Suzy Albert; son-inlaw, Paul Albert; two brothers, J.D. Showalter and Jerry Shifflet; four grandchildren, Kayla and Jade Oates and Stephanie and Steven Albert. Services were held on Nov. 30 at Rouzie Chapel, 21089 Green Bay Rd., Beaverdam, Va. 23015. Barbara Parker PARKER, Barbara Pitts, 70, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord Friday, November 29, 2013. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Inez Pitts; and husband, Bob Parker; and is survived by two sons, Command Sgt. Maj. Carl Parker, U.S. Army (Alison) and Steven Parker (Angela); granddaughter, Kimberlynn; and sister, Janice Weaver (Robbie). Barbara was a caregiver for more than 25 years at Loris Community Hospital in Loris, S.C. Family received friends Dec. 1 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Rd., where services were held on Dec. 2. Interment Walnut Grove Baptist Church.
