July saw the increase of WorkCover premiums with the average net premium rate moving to $1.23 per $100 of wages (after discounts).
W
hile a rise in premiums is understandably not welcome news, WorkCover said they are experiencing the pressure of rising claims costs. “Our strong financial position has allowed us to subsidise premium rates for Queensland business by $1.2 billion over the past six years. To not take any action this year on premium rates would be irresponsible and could risk the quality of services delivered,” said WorkCover CEO, Bruce Watson. The premium rate applied to individual employers is dependent on their wages, their claims performance and that of their industry.
WHAT EMPLOYERS NEED TO DO? You should review and adjust your charge out and loaded rates as required and ensure you are adding any premium increases into future wage costings.
