Merging the worlds of fashion, art, real estate and philanthropy, Mann About Town delivers cutting-edge lifestyle content to New York and beyond.
Photo courtesy of OderaHi all and welcome back to Mann About Town!
As we roll into warmer weather, a summer in The Hamptons is soon coming. We greatly look forward to attending and sponsoring many events, including some with upcoming covers and one with our past cover of Jean and Martin Shafiroff. I thank them again for being our cover for April.
In our last issue, we had tremendous feedback on both our Mount Sinai and Peter Thomas Roth features. We are so grateful for our relationship with Mount Sinai as it allows us to bring our readers information on the hospital, their doctors and various cancer treatments. Mount Sinai is always raising the bar in every avenue.
Our most popular column being Peter Thomas Roth gets great reviews, and Jeffery Burge along with the rest of Peter’s team is great to work with. Lately, we have been working closely with Christie’s International to bring our readers information on their past and future events. Each relationship built brings our readers more exclusive features, and we are always searching to build more.
Mann Publications had great success at the Marcum Consumer Products & Retail Symposium. There were over 300 people in attendance including retailers, manufacturers and AI/Tech people. The response we got from Mann About Town was great and the copies went very quickly.
We look forward to holding our golf outings for both Mann Charitable Foundation and National Reality Club Foundation. As always, check out our amazing features this month including my dear friend Ann Ligouri with her new golf book, “Life on the Green” and the Design Museum’s new exhibition on Italian designer, Enzo Mari.
Each month we strive to bring our readers new content and amazing stories. Thank you for the great support and we’ll see you next month for our double issue!

“Water For Elephants” at the Imperial Theatre will enjoy what I think will be a long run on Broadway. Like “The Music Man” and “Back to The Future,” this wonderful musical will appeal to people of all ages and all walks of life. The music and lyrics by Pigpen Theatre Co. are not overly memorable, the choreography by Jesse Robb is simple and plain, however, the acting, the book by Rick Elice the direction by Jessica Stone and the circus design and acrobatics by Shana Carroll (Cirque du Soleil’s Crystal) are outstanding.

MVVO ART: THE DIGITAL ART SHOW CONTINUES
Based on the book by Sara Gruen, “Water for Elephants” takes us to the depression; the circus, the people and animals in the Benzini Brothers Circus. We get to see two Jankowski’s, the younger Jacob (Grant Gustin) and Mr. Jankowski (Gregg Edelman). He is a veterinarian from Cornell who never fi nished his studies. He turns out to be a huge help to the penny-pinching owner, August (Paul Alexander Nolan) who bought the circus from Benzini back in 1929. The good doctor would fall smitten with August’s wife, Marlena (Isabelle McCalla). August has a foul temper, is often ruthless with his employees and worse with the treatment of his animals. As the plot goes on both tension and tempers fl are, people are pushed to the brink, both literally and fi guratively.
While the Ad Art Show at the Oculus in the Westfield World Trade Center is over, the show continues; the art is for sale on the MvVO Art Artsy gallery. The Ad Art Show 2020 was an innovative, all-digital contemporary art show
What makes “Water for Elephants” a standout is the star cast, the supporting cast and its ensemble. The sound and the projections too are quite remarkable; the costumes (David Israel Reynoso), the scenic design (Takeshi Kata) and the lighting (Bradley King) all complement what is a great evening of theater.
When this musical opens full throttle is when the audience becomes most enchanted. Songs that do its magic are: “Anywhere/Another Train,” “I Choose the Ride,” “I Shouldn’t Be Surprised,” “You’ve Got Nothing” and “Go Home.” It is these songs that have the actors giving its audience full singing and dancing; the lights and sounds are whirlwind. The audience laps up the circus atmosphere and loves the protagonist/ antagonist part of the show. In Jessica Stone’s direction, the animals come to life onstage and become a big part of the story. In both a simple way and a very visual way, “Water for Elephants” should not be missed!
featuring paintings, photography, sculptures and mixed media installations by artists in the advertising industry. The show included artworks by 135 contemporary artists on the 22 screens of the Oculus. mvvoart.com

Coconut Cartel is premium aged rum cut to proof with fresh coconut water. The single-estate rum is distilled from sugarcane syrup and aged for up to 12 years in new charred American white oak barrels in Guatemala.
The “secret sauce” in the blend is the use of fresh coconut water, locally harvested within 48 hours prior to blending, to “proof” the rum from barrel strength to bottle strength (80 Proof / 40% ABV). The harvest coconuts native to Central America which yield a unique profi le of coconut water high in oil, salt and mineral concentration give the blend its distinctive fl avor and texture. The result is an extra smooth and refreshing añejo rum with notes of oak, tropical fruit and a luscious mouthfeel.
tASting nOteS
This blend features tropical aromas of fresh coconut with hints of banana, mango and vanilla. Upon tasting, notes of plantain, caramel, sandalwood and burnt brown sugar come forward with coconut making a subtle appearance alongside a fl int of minerality, umami and a touch of saltiness from the coconut water.

Epionce Skincare has 20-plus years of putting the skin barrier fi rst. Board Certified Dermatologist Dr. Carl Thornfeldt, founder of Episciences, created Epionce Skincare to achieve clear, itch-free skin for his patients’ chronic skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and rosacea. Dr. Thornfeldt began his skin barrier research in the early 1990s, through which he established the fundamentals of protecting and strengthening the skin barrier, which are used across the entire skincare industry today. Truly a pioneer, he was awarded the fi rst-ever patent on skin barrier health in 1997.
Dr. Thornfeldt is always on a mission to create effective skincare products that drive active ingredients into the skin without breaking down or irritating the barrier. After years of intense research on the topic, he looked to botanicals for a solution, which at the time was not readily accepted by the medical community. In 2002, the fl agship Epionce Renewal Facial Cream was born and sold exclusively through Dr. Thornfeldt’s own medical practice in Southwest Idaho. This barrier repair formula leverages extracts of safflower, rosa canina, avocado and fl ax to achieve the optimum ratio of lipids.
Advanced clinical testing confi rmed that this formula accelerated barrier repair more than twice as effectively as 100% petrolatum, and four times better than
any commercially available moisturizer used by the dermatology community.
In 2006 at the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) annual event, Dr. Thornfeldt presented a Clinical Study on Epionce Renewal Facial Cream’s antiaging powers. When paired with Epionce Lytic Tx, participants and physicians saw the same antiaging results typically achieved with retinoids, but without the irritation often caused by retinoids due to their damaging impact on the skin barrier.
Epionce barrier nurturing products are backed by patient safety studies and decades of proven clinical results. These are proven formulations that address skin issues such as eczema, psoriasis and rosacea, as well as skin aging, which are common results of a damaged skin barrier. The products fall into four main categories: Cleanse & Repair, Correct & Boost, Renew & Fortify, Protect & Prevent and are designed to be customized by a medical professional for a patient’s skin type and concern.
“Epionce Skincare has grown from one product sold in our one practice in Idaho to nearly 30 barrier-protecting products recommended, trusted and sold by dermatologists worldwide, in more than 10 countries,” said Dr. Thornfeldt. “We’re proud to say that we have helped millions
of people achieve their skin care goals without the use of harmful chemicals that damage the skin barrier.”
Epionce Skincare has received multiple beauty awards in leading national publications including “NewBeauty,” “Shape” and “Women’s Health;” and in 2015 was awarded the best topical skincare at the Aesthetic Industry Awards. Dr. Thornfeld has published eight national studies on barrier health, which is why he has become known as the “Father of Barrier Repair.”
To meet global demands, Epionce Skincare built its own 18,000-square-foot laboratory and manufacturing facility in Boise where all Epionce products are researched, designed, formulated and tested for superior product performance, safety, freshness and efficacy. Dr. Thornfeldt continues his skin barrier research in this facility, conducting new studies that will enable Epionce Skincare to further enhance skin barrier health. Medical heritage and clinical research are at the heart of Epionce and fulfi ll Dr. Thornfeldt’s mantra, “If you keep the skin barrier healthy, beautiful skin follows.”
Epionce Skincare is available in the U.S. through thousands of medical skin professionals as well as Epionce.com, Dermstore.com and Lovelyskin.com.
When used regularly, sunscreen helps to not only prevent sunburn and skin cancer but also signs of premature aging. In fact, according to the World Health Organization, up to 90% of visible signs of aging can be attributed to sun exposure, making sunscreen the ultimate anti-aging defense. Despite the remarkable benefits of wearing sunscreen, however, studies have shown that up to one third of Americans rarely or never apply sunscreen.
Although reports show that most are concerned about the long-term effects of sun exposure, those who abstain from regular sunscreen use point to inconvenience as the culprit. Therein lies the challenge: How does the skin care industry respond to customers’ desire for sun protection without adding the inconvenience of an extra step?
To gain insight, we turned to skin care guru Peter Thomas Roth. An influential segment leader in the beauty industry, Roth is known for creating clinically stronger formulas and leads all research and development efforts at his state-of-the-art lab and manufacturing facility.
The newest innovation to emerge from Roth’s lab is Water Drench® Broad Spectrum SPF 45 Hyaluronic Cloud Sheer Tint Moisturizer. Here, Roth talks about the science behind this breakthrough formula and why it offers the perfect solution for sunscreen lovers and slackers alike.
Are you surprised that up to one third of Americans do not wear sunscreen regularly? Some people just want a quick skin care routine! However, it’s unfortunate that sunscreen doesn’t always make the cut because it’s so important. Applying sunscreen every day is one of the best ways to keep your skin looking youthful.
Do you have a solution for increasing sunscreen use for this season and beyond?
One of the hottest beauty trends right now are multifunctional products. Instead of using ten or so products to get amazing results, more and more consumers are streamlining their routines with multi-benefit formulas. With my new Water Drench® Broad Spectrum SPF 45 Hyaluronic Cloud Sheer Tint Moisturizer, my customers are getting more than sunscreen—they are getting an all-in-one solution that complements their routine instead of complicating it.
How is Water Drench® Broad Spectrum SPF 45 Hyaluronic Cloud Sheer Tint Moisturizer multifunctional?
It’s a moisturizer, sheer glow tint and broad-spectrum SPF 45 sunscreen—all in one! With this product, I really wanted to blur the lines between skin care, makeup and sunscreen while still providing the clinically stronger results I’m known for. As a day cream, my formula drenches your skin with a 30% Hyaluronic Acid Complex and is clinically proven to show immediate skin hydration. However, it also has a hint of tint that gives all skin tones a complexion-enhancing glow…and of course, powerful SPF 45 sunscreen.
Any tips for how to use this product?
Whether you’re using it as your daytime moisturizer, sheer glow tint or sunscreen, you should always apply my formula in the morning before going outdoors. And don’t forget about your neck, décolleté and hands! These areas require daily sun protection as well, because they easily show signs of sun damage and are big giveaways of your actual age.
Anything else you want people to know about?
If you think of sunscreen as being greasy, think again! My Water Drench® Broad Spectrum SPF 45 Hyaluronic Cloud Sheer Tint Moisturizer drenches your skin with a liquid cloud of moisture that feels soft and weightless like clouds in the atmosphere. It dries light as a cloud and has a silky smooth fi nish— you’re going to love it!
Recently opened in Hell’s Kitchen, Yingtao is a Chinese-inspired fi ne dining restaurant helmed by Founder and Owner Bolun Yao of August Hospitality Group. As the culmination of Yao’s longtime passion for creating a global culinary experience, Yingtao envelops guests in an atmosphere that is novel, unique and intimate, embracing a true ‘East-meets-West’ approach. In a city as diverse as NYC, I saw a gap in the market for refi ned Chinese-inspired dining. Our goal is to introduce Chinese ingredients into the New York fi ne dining scene, but in an unprecedented, new format.”
The Food Yingtao offers an eight-course tasting menu ($165) and a four-course pre-fi xe ($90) that focuses on traditional yet elevated Chinese-inspired cuisine. Trained extensively in restaurants across France, Chicago, New York and Peru, Chef Baster is a master in his field, constantly refi ning, evolving and perfecting his practice. Each stunning dish is presented thoughtfully and carefully, perfectly integrating
savory, sweet, sour, salty, bitter and umami profi les. There is no need for an education in Chinese fl avors — Yingtao has done the work for you. In 2018, Sabai Thai opened on Park Avenue South by Owner Karan Daryanani, a savvy entrepreneur who spent a lot of time in Thailand and made his foray into the hospitality realm with a vision of happiness for his guests – encapsulated in the Thai term “Sabai.” Daryanani aspired to create an atmosphere where patrons could bask in the warmth and joy reflective of Thai culture. To curate a menu that seamlessly blends Thai favorites with a Western twist, he enlisted the expertise of Executive Chef Mingmitr Eddy Amnuaypanich, a native of Central Thailand perfectly suited for the task.
Mingmitr’s culinary journey began in his mother’s kitchen, where he cultivated a deep-seated passion for cooking through innovative experiments with local ingredients. While pursuing an education in banking, Mingmitr simultaneously honed his skills by working at various restaurants in Thailand. However, his career trajectory took a significant turn when he decided to pursue his culinary path in New York. Embarking on his career, Mingmitr began as sous chef at PONGsri in 2000, the then-notable restaurant for both theater enthusiasts and locals. He continued to elevate his craft as Executive Chef at Kelly & Ping, an esteemed SoHo establishment situated on a charming cobblestone street, revered as one of the premier Asian food and lifestyle destinations of its era. The pivotal moment in Mingmitr’s journey occurred when he crossed paths with Karan. Recognizing Sabai Thai as the ideal canvas to further explore his expertise in authentic and modern Thai cuisine, Mingmitr seamlessly integrated his skills into the vibrant culinary tapestry of the restaurant.

In a time where prioritizing health and wellness is more popular than ever, Asian-American Jennifer Yen, founder of the three beauty brands: purlisse, YENSA and JooY takes old Asian beauty rituals and integrates them into each. As an actress, founder, mom and ‘momtrepreneur,’ Yen was inspired to bring beauty secrets to women everywhere while still being attached to her heritage. As Yen celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) month this May, she has been focusing on bringing old rituals to women everywhere in hopes to embrace their inner beauty.
Born in Taiwan and raised in Alabama, Yen was a daughter to hardworking parents and saw first-hand a glimpse into finding your way. Having gone to college in Boston, Yen opened her eyes to new and diverse things, something she didn’t see in Alabama. After doing a few local commercials in Boston, Yen obtained an agent thinking acting was her career path and moved to Los Angeles.
“I think my parents taught me a lot about having a hard work ethic and not taking life or things for granted, and to seize opportunities,” Yen said. “It really did open my eyes to hard work and entrepreneurship.”
Yen played evil villainess, Vypra on “Power Rangers” which included heavy stage makeup three to five days a week and hours on end in which Yen developed psoriasis, rosacea and adult acne. “I tried all the latest and greatest things, consulted many dermatologists and nothing was working,” Yen said. “That’s when I started diving into my grandmother’s Asian beauty rituals.” Many of these rituals included drinking room temperature brewed tea as an antiseptic, washing your face with soymilk and including superfoods in your everyday diet.
“Growing up in Alabama, I was trying to diminish that I was different and that I was Asian,” Yen said. “But now, I infuse so much of my heritage into my brands because I want to share the beauty and the spirit of Asian American culture. I want to be all about AAPI Month and I want to celebrate Lunar New Year and talk about the Asian beauty secrets.”
From these rituals and secrets, Yen started developing pūrlisse, which launched in 2008. Using a combination of Asian beauty and modern philosophy, pūrlisse delivers results-driven skincare and celebrates the beauty of being different.
Twelve years later, Yen welcomed her daughter, postpartum hormonal changes, and developed melasma and sunspots. Yen’s mother took care of her following a 2,000-year-old Chinese practice called “Zuo Yue Zi,” meaning “Sitting the Month,” where a new mom sits out for one month and integrates superfoods into her daily life. “I was having black chicken soup with black rice, black sesame oil and black seaweed,” Yen said. “I love how it nurtured my body. I felt so revitalized, and I wanted to take the superfood concept and infuse it into full buildable makeup.” From here, Yen’s second brand YENSA was created in 2019, which took inspiration from the superfood practice used by her and the generations before her.
The name “YENSA,” stems from a few different meanings. Derived from Yen’s last name, “Yen” means color and face in Chinese, in English it is a deep desire and passion and in Vietnamese it means calm and peaceful– all things Yen believes empowers women.
The figure eight is a recurring symbol across Yen’s brands. In YENSA, each product is infused with eight superfoods representing the luckiest number in Chinese culture. “The number eight is super significant in my culture and to me personally. It symbolizes great health, prosperity and infinite possibilities,” Yen said.
For Yen, her two favorite superfood ingredients are black sesame oil and black seaweed. Black sesame oil is rich in amino acids, improves skin texture and can be used for your hair, skin and nails. Black seaweed is rich in vitamins B and C, and is also used to brighten and soothe both texture and sensitive skin.
YENSA’s Skin on Skin BC Foundation with SPF 40 is their best-selling product made for multitasking women to fit into their modern lifestyle. This product blends Asian rituals with great coverage. A second best-seller is their Super Serum Silk Foundation. “I like to call it your next level foundation. It’s a true anti-aging, age-defying foundation,” Yen said. The foundation is leveled up by combining superfoods with tried-and-true science ingredients that include vitamin C and E, ferulic acid and bakuchiol oil.
Following the belief that outer beauty matches inner health, YENSA ingredients will allow you to love the skin you’re in. “Our mission is to reinvent the time-tested Asian ritual superfood traditions but creating it for the everyday modern women. We hope to inspire women to embrace their beauty in every stage of their life,” Yen said.
This belief flows not only from skin, but to hair as well. JooY, Yen’s third beauty brand, is for scalp care. “The women in my family always said you have to take care of your scalp because it truly is an extension of your face and skin,” Yen said.
Throughout the years, Yen has always faced scalp issues, but it became more apparent after having COVID. For ten days Yen’s hair was shedding, prompting her to think back on her grandmother advising her that to have healthy hair you must have a healthy scalp. “I remember my grandmother and mother massaged their hair with sesame oil, rinsing it with apple cider vinegar, which inspired me to create JooY,” Yen said. The number eight reoccurs in JooY as the double “O” put on top of each other creates an “8.”
JooY and her other brands were made to match the lifestyle of a career-driven woman. “I’m so driven by creating products for women on-
the-go. How are women living? What do they want and need?”
For Yen, it was important to create high-end scalp products using the rituals she grew up with and fermented ingredients. Fermentation breaks down the molecular structure of ingredients into smaller, more easily absorbed forms and helps promote a balanced scalp biome. JooY relies on biotechnology, utilizing a fermentation process, to enhance the efficacy and natural benefits of our scalp care formulations. JooY launched this past April with five products.
The key ingredients for Yen in JooY are apple cider vinegar and the black seaweed. The apple cider vinegar helps to detoxify and clarify as the black seaweed nourishes and hydrates. Yen believes the two most important products JooY offers are the Resurfacing Scalp Serum, followed by the Clarify Shampoo.
“My vision for JooY was to create an authentic scalp care brand rooted in my heritage with all the beauty secrets I learned,” Yen said. “I also wanted the packaging to evoke nature, sustainability and recyclability while still being modern.” JooY’s containers are made up of 30 percent recycled material and they offer refill packages as well as the option for consumers to send back their empty bottles to practice eco-friendly habits.
Yen puts everything of herself into the brands she creates. Each one is rooted in a tradition or ritual practiced by generations of women in her family and she hopes to continue to bring it to so many other women. In the years to come, Yen hopes to see her brands as top brands in the industry with wider, more global distribution. Reaching everyone on a wider scale will help show them “your health is your first wealth,” something Yen was taught from a young age and hopes to spread within each company.

Golf is a cerebral and often spiritual game, and for the champion golfers on the PGA and LPGA Tours, their “life on the green” includes reflection and soul-searching; merging self-knowledge with course knowledge; blending hardwon insights with past mentorship; mastering the arts of competition and resilience; all while prioritizing their growing families and curating their lasting legacies.
The new book, “Life on The Green: Lessons and Wisdom from Legends of Golf,” from legendary sports talk show host and renowned interviewer Ann Liguori, foreword by Jim Nantz is a dream collection of insights and life lessons from some of the most compelling characters and champions in the game’s history. Unfi ltered and topical, Liguori presents her engrossing conversations with Tom Watson, Bernhard Langer, Nancy Lopez, Dottie Pepper, Amy Alcott, Gary Player, Ben Crenshaw, Jan Stephenson, Padraig Harrington, Annika Sorenstam, Renee Powell and Jack Nicklaus. Through each conversation she relates how these esteemed competitors and gallery favorites have navigated their lives on and off the course.
Beyond the role of work ethic or
belief in oneself or fate or a lucky chip-in on the 17th, Liguori strives to move beyond the stock answers or greying anecdotes rehashed so many times over. Her aim, as it always has been over her long career in broadcasting, is to get these dominant performers to speak as freely and openly as they ever have. Whether it’s discussing the history of race in the game with Renee Powell while shedding light on her own personal journey, inviting Padraig Harrington to discuss the omnipresent LIV tour questions and concerns or getting the great Jan Stephenson to take a second look at her role in promoting the fledgling LPGA as “golf’s pinup girl” in the 1970s and 1980s, Liguori uncovers intriguing stories, unearthed revelations and life wisdom that will inspire all.
Life, like golf, isn’t designed to be easy or fair. Every lie isn’t fl at. Every line isn’t perfect. You can put in lots of the hard work, but still get bad breaks. Good times. Hard times. We all have obstacles to overcome. Events that test our character. The same is true for those who are used to overpowering the field as well as the golf course, and their collected wisdom in “Life on The Green,” certainly transcends the game.

Inez heels blends comfort and fashion for women on-the-go. Hannah Spinelli, founder and creative director of Inez heels took her past experiences from her fi rst design job Italy to ten years at Ralph Lauren and wearing uncomfortable heels herself to start a brand that prioritizes quality of heels.
Inspired by traditional Spanish shoe making practices, Inez uses high-end nappa and kid suede leather for soft and resilient heels. Spinelli’s vision for comfortable heels is the force behind Inez. The main objective Inez stays true to is making women feel beautiful while being comfortable.
“For the new spring collection, I was inspired by the idea of a party in the tropics on a warm evening, surrounded by lush palms and vivid florals. Our new sandals exude a vibrant optimism that is reflected in bold metallics, high-gloss neutrals and deep orchid pink,” Spinelli said.
Spinelli’s favorite style from the new collection is their Naomi platform with a subtle fl ared heel. “I’ve been calling it our 90s heroine sandal. It feels like something Renee Russo would wear in ‘The Thomas Crown Affair,’” Spinelli said.
The INEZ woman is stylish and loves to dress up. Inez customers are tried and true heel lovers, and for them the comfort aspect is a bonus. “On the other hand, there are many women who tell us that they had given up on wearing heels until they discovered INEZ,” Spinelli said.

The fi rst ever U.K. museum exhibition devoted to one of the most significant designers of the 20th century opened at the Design Museum.
The 60-year career of designer Enzo Mari — a pioneer of post-war Italian design — is spotlit in this major exhibition. It is co-curated by Mari’s friend and collaborator, and artistic director of Serpentine, Hans Ulrich Obrist, with Francesca Giacomelli, Mari’s studio project assistant, designer, curator and researcher.
The large-scale retrospective includes the full spectrum of Mari’s prolific output, from his work as a designer, but also as an artist, teacher, critic and theorist. In total, more than 300 objects are on display — most have not been seen in the UK before.
The exhibition — produced by Triennale Milano — comes to the U.K. after debuting in Milan in 2020. The original exhibition opened just before Mari’s death, aged 88. He is remembered as a “giant” of Italian design and a fi gure whose life and work has inspired generations of creatives around the world.
The vast array of works that visitors can see spans the spheres of art, design, exhibition and graphic design. Hundreds of Mari’s projects are examined, ranging from furniture to conceptual installation-based works, and from product design to graphics. Also on show are his children’s books and games, which were an important aspect of Mari’s output as in his vast creative field, he considered the needs of children just as important as those of adults.
Archival material throughout the show provides greater insight into Mari’s research process, and the key principles that guided and unified his work.
During his long career, many of Mari’s timeless designs went on to fi ll homes across the globe, as they continue to do to this day. They include his ‘Nature Series’ prints of apples and pears, perpetual calendars in injection moulded plastic, and timeless furniture and kitchenware.
Mari had a fi rm commitment to creating designs that were accessibe to everyone, and sustainable in both their materiality and aesthetics. This approach was radical for his time, and today he can be seen as a trailblazer for many of design’s and society’s most pressing issues. His seminal instruction booklet “Autoprogettazione” (Proposal for self-design), is one such example, predating open-source design practices.
Underlying much of Mari’s work was a belief that play is, “The activity needed to discover one’s potential and to learn about the world.” After seeing his children playing, he decided to design new toys and games for them. These went on to become some of his most famous works and are highlights of the exhibition. One of his works, ‘16 Animals’ — which he created in 1957 — is a wooden puzzle composed of the silhouettes of sixteen animals,
including a camel, elephant and kangaroo. Its production by the Milanese manufacturer Danese, proved so popular that sixteen years later Mari designed another version, ‘16 Fish’, which featured silhouettes of fi sh, seals, an octopus and other sea creatures. Both puzzles were intended to encourage children to discover through play. Other toys and games Mari created and on display are ‘The fable game’, and ‘The apple and the butterfl y’.
Known for his uncompromising beliefs and subversive opinions, Mari has been described as ‘design’s conscience’. His stance was one of activism, calling for a greater social responsibility in design, and access to knowledge. His durable, low-cost and multifunctional objects speak to these beliefs, as do his broader installation-based works.
Hans Ulrich Obrist worked closely with Enzo Mari on a series of interviews in 1990s and continued a dialogue and exchanges with him since. The exhibition is drawn from the fi nal show Mari curated during his lifetime — Enzo Mari: L’arte del design at the Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Turin in 2008. It has been expanded to include archival material assembled by Francesca Giacomelli to illustrate the process of creation and the evolution of key projects resulting from Mari’s research.
The projects featured in the show can collectively be considered the most representative works of the nearly 2,000 Mari created during his career. The objects are displayed in chronological order, without distinguishing between disciplines, media or types of research.
The exhibition also includes a number of tributes from contemporary international artists who reflect on Mari’s extraordinary life and legacy through site-specific installations and new, specially commissioned works. These pieces — by Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Mimmo Jodice, Dozie Kanu, Adrian Paci, Barbara Stauffacher Solomon, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Nanda Vigo, Danh Vō and Virgil Abloh — make up the fi nal section of the exhibition.
Thirteen London-based, contemporary designers displayed select pieces of their work which demonstrate how their practice has been inspired by Mari’s thinking or his legacy. The designers are Jasper Morrison, Studiomama, Martino Gamper, Industrial Facility, Andu Masebo, Michael Marriott, Special Projects, Jaclyn Papparlardo, A Practice for Everyday Life, Rio Kobayashi, Sound Advice, Livia Lauber and StudyOPortable, and the display — titled “Grazie Enzo: Contemporary Responses to Enzo Mari” — opened on the same day as the exhibition.

Armie Hammer, who has gone underground since his “cannibal” scandal, is now able to reconnect with his ex-wife Elizabeth Chambers, who divorced him over his distasteful proclivities, on his TV. Chambers appears as a main character on the new reality show “Grand Cayman: Secrets in Paradise,” on Hulu. Another personality on the series is multimillionaire entrepreneur Frank Schilling, whose bubbly rosé Aphrodise fuels the sexy antics on the buzzed-about show. Chambers reportedly became “unsettled” when talking about Armie on the program, but later opened up and became “uninhibited” when discussing their relationship and tumultuous separation. During fi lming, Schilling helps Chambers, who is also on the Food Network, open an outpost of her Texas-based confectionary BIRD Bakery in his restaurant, Mykonos on Grand Cayman Island. In one memorable scene, Schilling shows Chambers how to use the edge of an iPhone, not a butcher knife, to slice open a bottle of Aphrodise with one swipe. The beach-themed show will run for ten episodes and there is already talk of season two. drinkaphrodise.com
R&B singer and producer Babyface, who has won 13 Grammys and worked with everyone from Usher and Janet Jackson to Ariana Grande and Whitney Huston, has discovered a new star. The singer has snapped up early work by 16-year-old painter Henri Reed, who critics have dubbed “Baby Basquiat” because of the influence the iconic artist has had on Reed’s eye-catching artworks. Henri was commissioned to do a car-themed piece for the NY International Auto Show to be held at the Javits Center. The promising wunderkind painted the piece live for ABC’s program “In the Fast Lane.” The artwork was the fi rst thing visitors saw as they entered the Auto Show, which featured an Artist Avenue, showcasing emerging artists. The show exhibited celebrity rides including Elvis Presley’s 1971 Stutz Blackhawk, NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar 1948 Packard and Princess Grace’s 1958 Mercedes-Benz. LA based Henri Reed also had his fi rst solo show at gallerist Emanuel Friedman’s Lux Contemporary, a gallery adjacent to Rolls Royce NY in Chelsea. Those in attendance at opening night included lawyer Daniel Stock, celebrity hair stylist Chaz Dean and skin care mogul Peter Thomas Roth. luxcontemporary.com

Madonna took to the stage two hours late in Dallas and said, “When I started this show I was in a bad mood,” and concertgoers said the night went downhill from there. The pop star apparently wasn’t ready for her closeup as she ordered all the TV screens in the VIP suites blacked out. The Material Girl sounded like she had a cold and wore a leg brace during the show at American Airlines Center, which had large sections of empty seats. The icon scolded the audience several times over its lack of enthusiasm and said, “Don’t make me repeat myself. I sound like a crazy person, which I am.” In other Madonna news, her favorite artist Tamara de Lempicka is the subject of the new Broadway musical “Lempicka,” featuring former Wicked star Eden Espinosa. The new show will bring to life the racy antics of the legendary artist, whose collectors also include Jack Nicholson and Barbara Streisand. If “Madge” wants to splash out on a new sketch, Bill Rau’s M.S. Rau in New Orleans is selling “Portrait D’Homme À Lunette” for $19,500. The gallery sold de Lempicka’s most famous painting “Autoportrait” for $1.25 million. rauantiques.com
Standing in front of one of the Chagall’s in the Metropolitan Opera’s lobby Peter Gelb, the opera’s general manager, took a deep breath before he started to speak. While we don’t have a performance to offer to you today,” Gelb told his assembled the guests. “You’re in for a treat because you are about to tour the backstage of the most famous opera house in the world.
“This is where Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo and José Carreras, enjoyed some of their greatest triumphs,” Gelb said.
“Our audience gets to trade places with our stars. Everyone dines on stage, on red velvet chairs beneath our gold leaf ceiling and our glimmering Swarovski crystal chandeliers,” Gelb explained.
After the tour everyone celebrated their afternoon and Barbara Tober, this year’s honoree in the Met’s Belmont Room. Guests included F. Murray Abraham, Carrie Barratt, David Beer, Mr. and Mrs. J.
