one mann’s opinion
Here at Mann Publications, we always spend a lot of time and attention making sure that our cover stories are the right fit for us. Therefore, I am very excited that all three of our magazines’ covers for the month of February are celebrating Black History Month. For the cover of Mann About Town, we are highlighting accomplished Black mixed-media artist Courtney Minor. This is particularly exciting for us, because Minor’s story touches on two topics that we feel very strongly about: supporting the arts and promoting Black history and culture.
The rest of the magazine is also filled with incredible content, much of which continues to highlight the importance of Black History Month and Black culture. We are very excited to share these stories with you. and we hope you will join us in celebrating these talented Black creatives and their work.
As we continue to celebrate Black History Month, the Mann Charitable Foundation is also in the process of putting together a fundraising event where the proceeds will go to charities that support and uplift the Black community. All of our February cover stars have shown excitement about the idea, and we are excited about the event’s potential.
We are always continuing to add more wonderful categories to Mann About Town, and we are particularly excited about the way that the art world has graciously welcomed us. We also have a lot of terrific travel content to come, and are excited to be working with The Destination Designer. Mann About Town continues to reach new heights with each issue and we couldn’t be more grateful. Mann About Town has taken us on a journey that my team and I could have never imagined and I could not be prouder of what we’ve all accomplished together. We are always collaborating, evolving and moving with the times, and I look forward to the ways that we will continue to grow together.
At Mann About Town, we always aim to offer informative, exciting articles that keep you on the cutting edge of fashion, dining, wellness, real estate and more. We are looking forward to continuing to bring you the best lifestyle content out there throughout 2023.

Welcome back to Mann About Town! It is with great excitement that I introduce you all to our February 2023 issue. We have rounded up the hottest trends in dining, shopping, travel, fashion and more this month for you all. For our cover story this issue, I was lucky enough to speak with Courtney Minor, an extremely talented Black mixed-media artist. Her art focuses on expressing emotions through mixed-media collages that really draw you in and tell a story. We could not be more thrilled to have her grace our cover and share her incredible story with all of you. In honor of Black History Month, we are very excited to highlight the stories of a wide variety of Black creatives and innovators across all three of our monthly Mann Publications magazine titles, and we hope you will join us in celebrating their impact.
In this issue of Mann About Town, we have a number of amazing features, including an interview with Tami Charles, the author of multiple books for young readers that focus on diversity and culture, Apple’s newly released Black History Month content, Whitfield Lovell’s touring art exhibit “Passage,” which focuses on lost African American history and so much more!
At Mann About Town, we are always looking for ways to expand and provide our readership with content we know you will love, and I look forward to continuing to bring you all the cutting edge luxury lifestyle content you enjoy.

ANNE KLEIN KICKS OFF MILESTONE YEAR WITH NEW FASHION CAMPAIGN FEATURING SUPERMODEL CANDICE SWANEPOEL
2023 serves as a milestone year for iconic American fashion brand Anne Klein as it celebrates 55 years of style, impact and the legacy of its namesake founder. To kick-off the year, Anne Klein has tapped South African supermodel, entrepreneur and philanthropist, Candice Swanepoel to appear in a new Spring/Summer 2023 fashion campaign. Swanepoel will also serve as an impact partner supporting Anne Klein’s cause related initiative for Q1 2023.
In addition to marking 55 years in business, the American heritage brand will celebrate what would have been Anne Klein’s 100th birthday (August 3) as well as the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Versailles (November 28) where top American designers, including Anne as the sole woman, upstaged their French contemporaries at the legendary Versailles fashion show to shift the balance of fashion influence to New York.
Anne Klein, who founded her eponymous brand in 1968, is regarded as a trailblazing designer that forever changed the way women dress. She is credited with originating the concept of a fully coordinated closet and providing a uniquely American point of view to the global fashion industry. She also inspired and championed women’s ability to make positive change, famously declaring: “Clothes won’t change the world. The women who wear them will.”
Like Klein, Candice Swanepoel is founder and designer of a purpose-driven brand, Tropic of C, and actively supports women’s empowerment and philanthropic causes. Swanepoel is the latest in a series of Brand Ambassadors who embody the Anne Klein brand mission, which is equal parts image and impact, including: Frontline Worker and Model Maggie Rawlins; Actor and Humanitarian Ilfenesh Hadera; Supermodel and Activist Joan Smalls and Award-Winning Actress and Philanthropist Gina Rodriquez. Swanepoel will join Anne Klein for a charitable initiative to be announced soon.
“I’m honored to have partnered with Anne Klein, a brand whose values align with my own,” said Swanepoel. “Anne Klein has a long and respected history within the fashion industry and I’m proud to support their mission of empowering and championing women.”
The Anne Klein Spring/Summer ‘23 campaign was shot by Australian photographer Chris Colls at Pier 59 Studios in New York City. The approach to photographing Swanepoel was raw and unfiltered, focusing on organic movements and relaxed styling to bring a more intimate and approachable feel. Like the campaign aesthetic, the new collection, has a relaxed, personal, tonality that focuses on this season’s neutral shades with pops of bright coloring and the simple, yet modern separates the Anne Klein brand is known for. A new denim collection also debuts.

EMMA CHAMBERLAIN
Lancôme is thrilled to announce the appointment of the new face of the brand, the American Gen Zer, fashion icon, entrepreneur and girl of the 21st century, Emma Chamberlain.
Leading The ‘Be Yourself’ Movement
With her engaging personality and relaxed demeanor, Chamberlain became a global sensation by establishing herself as one of the most popular fashion icons, and effortlessly cool content creator. Shortly after launching her YouTube channel at the age of 16, Emma broke into social media stardom at a very fast pace. The success of her social content gaining traction came from Chamberlain demonstrating an authentic version of herself, which made her stand out as a disruptor in the crowded content creator space. Chamberlain’s fans don’t only find her content entertaining and filled with humor, but rather comforting, feeling that they are not alone in their journey.
Since then, Chamberlain won the People’s Choice award Pop Podcast category and was acknowledged by Forbes, making it on the “30 under 30 – Social Media” list in 2021. With her mannerisms, her unique video editing was largely imitated, shaping a new vlogging style by keeping it real. Bringing her modernity and edge to the French house of beauty, Chamberlain said, “I have always had my own notion of beauty and didn’t project myself within the beauty industry because of the duality that I show, mixing comfort with being nicely put together. Hence why, when Lancôme came to me, I felt so honored and excited that the brand understood and appreciated who I am.”
Françoise Lehmann, Lancôme International president added, “I am proud to welcome Emma to the Lancôme family. Beside achieving so much at such an early age, Emma is adored by a generation for the perspectives that she shares. We can only appreciate her authentic tone, and the humor used to discuss meaningful topics.”
Joining the Lancôme stellar group of ambassadors, Chamberlain will add her irresistible wit and singularity. Together with Lancôme, Chamberlain will further spread the brand’s values of positive and powerful beauty to invite a whole generation to shine inside out.
Besides from being a renown content creator who openly addresses the issues of her generation, Chamberlain also got into the realm of business and created her own brand “Chamberlain Coffee” in 2020. Being the voice of a generation, Emma runs her own podcast “Anything Goes with Emma Chamberlain” where she remains unfiltered.
With a social media following of almost 30M Emma has become one of the most influential, relatable and popular personality. She is a role model for her generation, who lives by her own convictions.
Starring In The First Ever Lancôme Web Series
The ones who want to watch Emma candidly wandering the Parisian streets and opening the doors of Lancôme offices, will not be left disappointed. The unprecedented web series “How do you say beauty in French” on Lancôme’s YouTube channel is full of surprises and sometime ambushes, showing Emma’s fresh perspective and modern humor. Watch now how Lancôme gave Emma the keys to their entire office, and be warned, she can do whatever she wants!

Author Tami Charles’ recently released children’s book “We Are Here” has earned its place as a number one best seller on Amazon and was named one of Barnes & Noble’s Most Anticipated Books for January but becoming an accomplished author did not always seem like a path within reach when Charles herself was a young girl.
“Growing up, I loved reading books,” Charles said. “My mom was a teacher at my elementary school, and she was a strong advocate for literature. As a child, I secretly wanted to be an author, but I didn’t think I could. I thought that to be an author, you had to be either rich or really old, or both!”
Charles instead set her sights on a career path that she was very familiar with thanks to her mother: teaching.
“Following in my mother’s footsteps, I became a teacher,” Charles said. “Reading and writing stories with my students reignited my childhood author dreams. I would write at 4 a.m. before school and then well into the night afterwards.”
With her passion reignited, Charles finally decided to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming an author.
“I faced lots of rejections over the eight years that I pursued publishing, but I didn’t give up! I got my first ‘yes’ with my debut novel, ‘Like Vanessa,’ which was published in 2018, and I haven’t stopped ever since,” Charles said.
The books that Charles writes aim to expand the minds of her readers by delving into important topics like race and culture on a level that young readers can understand.
“As a child, books gave me purpose and they introduced me to other worlds,” Charles said. “I think it’s important to write for children and young adults so that they, too, can imagine what is possible for them through the pages of a book. Children deserve access to books where they not only see themselves and their experiences reflected, but also books that provide an opportunity to learn about other cultures, too. In my opinion, diverse books are valuable for all readers.”
Charles’ most recent book “We Are Here” is a follow up to her 2020 book “All Because You Matter.”
“‘All Because You Matter’ stemmed from a conversation that I had with my son when he was in kindergarten,” Charles said. “He’d learned about Dr. King in school and wanted to know why ‘the bad guys’ treated Dr. King unfairly. It was then that I realized that parents must navigate tough topics with their children. So, I wrote ‘All Because You Matter’ as a starting point, to spark important conversations, while reminding young readers of their importance in this world.”
“We Are Here” is meant to continue that important conversation in 2023.
“‘We Are Here’ also was inspired by conversations with my son during the pandemic,” Charles said. “Older and
wiser, he saw headlines and news reports that concerned him. His questions, yet again, reminded me of the time he was in kindergarten and learned about Dr. King. So, for ‘We Are Here,’ I aimed to build upon the narrative of the first book, this time celebrating the history and contributions of notable black figures. You’ll see nods to Dr. King, Muddy Waters and Marian Anderson to name a few. These are people who made an impact not just here in America, but across the globe.”
Charles is currently on a book tour for “We Are Here,” meeting young readers and their parents and educators across the United States.
“Book tour life can be quite exciting!” Charles said. “We started promoting months before ‘We Are Here’ was published. Scholastic really prioritizes getting the word out, in advance, to tastemakers in the industry—our beloved educators, librarians and book sellers. So far, I’ve traveled to Rhode Island, Salt Lake City, Raleigh, St. Louis, Columbus and Anaheim, with stops in Chicago, Houston and New Orleans to come.”
The road doesn’t stop there; Charles is already hard at work on a third installment of the series.
“I’m excited that there will be a third book in the series, entitled ‘United Together.’ This will be published with Scholastic in 2025!” Charles said.
When purchasing her books, Charles encourages readers to support their local independent book shops. Some of her favorite New York-based independent book shops include Books Are Magic and Books of Wonder. You can also find her books at Barnes & Noble, Target, Amazon and wherever books are sold.

The Ultimate Divorce Lawyer
Marilyn Chinitz
Weinberg Center for Elder Justice
Marilyn Chinitz is a fierce advocate for the vulnerable and elderly in our society. Recently she was honored as a Champion for Change by the Weinberg Center for Elder Justice, in recognition of her extraordinary dedication to change and to seek justice for older adults. Chinitz was presented with the prestigious award at the Weinberg Center’s Ninth Annual Awards of Distinction Breakfast where she gave the keynote address. Chinitz said in part, “It is imperative that we gather the stories of the survivors of elder abuse and share them publicly, to bring awareness to this crisis which the Weinberg Center knows is far more widespread than most of us can imagine. I have learned that abuse happens every day to elderly and disabled individuals.”
Tom Cruise, Wendy Williams & Michael Douglas
During nearly four decades as one of America’s top divorce lawyers, representing high-profile
clients including Tom Cruise, Wendy Williams and Michael Douglas, Chinitz has witnessed many changes in family law.
Consider the Options to Divorce
Chinitz tries to get clients to consider their options before moving ahead with a divorce. “You can educate them as to whether or not divorce is something that they want to embark on,” she said. After hearing why clients think they want a divorce, she sometimes presents a different scenario. “I extrapolate what their motivations are and how they’re thinking,” Chinitz explained. “You know right away if somebody says, ‘I’m done, I want to move on,’ but you also know if somebody is hesitant and making decisions without really having full knowledge or having done their due diligence.”
Impact on Children
For one thing, divorce has a tremendous impact on children. Some divorcing couples work with parental coordinators, who help to broker solu-
tions. “I like the idea of people at least trying to be cooperative,” Chinitz said. “Sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn’t.”
Shun Social Media
Chinitz also recommends that clients avoid posting to social media while undergoing a divorce. Even if a cheating spouse, say, blocks the attorney from seeing his or her posts, lawyers can simply have someone else examine a spouse’s social media feeds as well as those of friends and associates for incriminating information like expensive trips or gifts. “Every platform — Facebook, Instagram, TikTok — for lawyers is a pool of information,” said Chinitz. One client’s husband claimed to be traveling for business even though that seemed unlikely. “We were able to find out exactly where he was because the woman with whom he was having a relationship posted everything — every vacation, every restaurant, every private club,” she said. “You get a lot of information; it’s crazy.”

Almost Everything Is Online
“Now, many court proceedings continue to be online — court hearings, trials, depositions,” Chinitz said. Chinitz believes because it’s cost-effective and efficient, these virtual practices, with the exception of trials, are here to stay. Divorcing parties are assigned a specific virtual time slot as opposed to staying in the courtroom for hours waiting for their case to come up. But Chinitz finds there is also a downside. “Trying to negotiate and resolve things in the back room when you have time to spend with the adversary waiting for your case to be called has become a lost opportunity now,” she said.
Lawyers Are Available 24/7
Litigation has not slowed down because of the pandemic. With many attorneys continuing to work from home, clients have access to counsel at any time of day. “The phone will ring at 6 a.m. on a Saturday,” Chinitz laughed. She answers. She has a client in Hong Kong with whom she speaks at 6 a.m. because it’s evening over there.
Private Judges
With courts still backed up, Chinitz says divorcing couples are using retired judges to arbitrate their cases.
Post-Pandemic Finances
The pandemic’s disruption is still wreaking havoc on divorcing parties. Agreements based on business valuations that have now dropped precipitously due to current markets, requiring distribution of assets that no longer exist, need to be amended. Some people no longer have enough income to meet their support obligations; others contemplating divorce are now considering waiting until things pick up financially.
Colorful Career
Chinitz’s colorful career has included some wild cases like a CSI-level extraction of a prenuptial agreement from a safe deposit box in the World Trade Center that had melted in the 9/11 attack and hiring a beautiful female private investigator in Rome to pose as a bride to locate a child illegally taken by his mother to Italy, where a relative ran a wedding dress atelier. “You look back, and think, ‘Wow, this is like a movie!’” Chinitz laughed. “There isn’t a story I haven’t heard.”
Uncovering a Murder with Geraldine Ferraro
In another astonishing case, Chinitz uncovered the murder of an Orthodox Jewish woman found dead in her Manhattan home and buried immediately without an autopsy, amid an ugly divorce. Chinitz reviewed the circumstance of evidence uncovered by investigators, then she had the family hire and discuss the case with her partner, Geraldine Ferraro — yes, the vice-presidential candidate in 1984. When the widower denied the dead woman’s family access to his children, they consulted Chinitz. “They told me the story of her divorce, and after a very extensive meeting, I said, ‘You’ve buried your sister. I think you buried the evidence. I think the husband killed her,’” Chinitz said. The private investigators discovered compelling circumstantial evidence and went to the district attorney and obtained an order to exhume the body. The cause of death was determined to be homicide by neck compression, and the ex-husband was eventually convicted in 2019.
Philanthropy & Entertaining
Chinitz lends her expertise to a variety of charitable causes, sitting on the boards of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, the Foundation for Gender Equality, WHAM (Women’s Health Access Matters) and K9s4Cops, which trains German shepherds for police departments. “There are a lot of interesting areas to keep me busy,” she said. Chinitz also loves to cook and hosts multi-lingual dinner parties for her circle of international friends.

Steak Frites Bistro Opens in Hell’s Kitchen
BY LAUREN SCHUSTER
ON THE TABLE
LOCATION: 496 9th Avenue New York, NY 10018 at West 38th Street WEBSITE: steakfritesbistro.com PHONE: 929-614-5070 INSTAGRAM: @steakfritesbistro HOURS: Dinner: Sunday – Thursday 5 p.m. – 10 p.m. Friday – Saturday 5 p.m. – 11 p.m. Weekend Brunch: Saturday – Sunday 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Looking for a little piece of Paris in the streets of Hell’s Kitchen? Look no further than newly opened restaurant Steak Frites Bistro, the latest offering from Chef/ Owner Adam Schop. The classic French fare and thoughtfully curated wine list and cocktail program transport you to the streets of Paris. This is certainly not Chef Schop’s first foray into Parisian bistro fare. When creating the menu, Schop drew from his background working at Zinc Bistro in Scottsdale, Arizona and Washington D.C.’s famed Le Diplomate, a Starr Restaurants Organization restaurant.
While Steak Frites Bistro’s dinner menu may be concise, it provides options for everyone, from those looking to indulge in a traditional multi-course French meal to those who are just in the neighborhood and looking for a quick, delicious bite.
The Hors D’œuvres section of the menu highlights French classics such as Escargots de Bourgogne, Burgundy snails cooked in parsley-garlic butter with croutons, which is served in a shallow dish rather than the traditional snail plate to make it easier for guests to soak up the remaining sauce with their bread; Steak Tartare, hand-chopped prime beef served with cornichons and grilled country bread and Pâté de Campagne, country style pâté of duck and pork served with cassis mustard.
Dishes on the Salades and Tartine section of the menu can be eaten either as a second course or as a meal all on their own. Highlights include the Salade Lyonnaise (frisée lettuce, bacon lardons, poached egg and fingerling potato crisps with sherry vinaigrette) and the Croque Madame (a classic French sandwich made with grilled ham, gruyère cheese and mornay sauce on brioche, topped with a fried egg and served with pommes frites).
The Plats Principaux (main dishes) include Gratin de Gnocchi à La Parisienne, Parisian gnocchi
made with flour and eggs rather than potatoes, cooked in butter and served over mushroom fricassée, roasted garlic with mornay sauce and topped with black truffle pecorino, and Burger Français, a dry-aged prime beef blend patty topped with gruyère, dijonnaise, shallots and cornichons on brioche with pommes frites.
Of course, you cannot have Steak Frites Bistro without including the classic dish itself. Steak Frites Bistro provides a unique offering: it serves its namesake dish in four forms. First, diners must choose between Traditional Steak Frites and Spécialités De La Maison, steak for two. The Traditional option is then available as either a nine-ounce Hanger steak or an 18-ounce Dry Aged New York Strip Steak. Available for two are a 28-ounce Côte de Boeuf and a 20-ounce Chateaubriand served with house made Béarnaise sauce, both served with a petite salade and presented to diners whole before being finished in a 900-degree broiler to add the perfect amount of char. The sauces available to be served with the steak are classic Au Poivre, Béarnaise and Bordelaise, to which diners can even add bone marrow to upgrade the flavor.
Desserts include Riz Au Lait, a French rice pudding and Soufflé Au Chocolat, baked to order with chocolate sauce poured over the top tableside.
Steak Frites Bistro’s rye bread, sourdough bread and baguettes are all sourced from C&B, a café and bakery from Chef/Owner Ali Sahin (Daniel). The breads are organic and are pre-fermented for two days using high hydration flour.
For guests looking for the perfect wine pairing with their meal, Steak Frites Bistro offers an exclusively French wine list designed by sommelier Alexis Percival. The wine list is composed of a generous selection of natural wines and unique selections from lesser-known producers that are not likely to be found elsewhere. The wine selections are avail-
able both by the glass and by the bottle.
In the mood for a cocktail instead? Thanks to Alex Cajuste, the French-Canadian beverage director of Miss Lily’s 7A Café, you’re in luck. Cajuste has created a beverage menu full of creative cocktails using French spirits as the base. Highlights include Deux Vies (Citadelle Gin, Lillet Blanc, Mathilde Orange XO, Absinthe Mist and lemon), Lavender 75 (Lavender-infused Citadelle Gin, St-Germain, and lemon, topped with sparkling wine) and Madame Guillotine (whiskey, Calvados, Cassis, lemon, egg white and bitters).
Steak Frites Bistro has also recently launched a special Weekend Brunch menu. Brunch-goers will not want to miss out on the buttery, flaky Viennoiseries (baked goods) such as Butter Croissants, Pain au Chocolat and Almond Croissants, which are also sourced from C&B. Other classic French brunch highlights include the Salade Niçoise, confit tuna, haricots verts, niçoise olives, potatoes, with lemon vinaigrette; Moroccan Baked Eggs, with peppers, onions, chickpeas and charred tomato sauce; Quiche Lorraine, with melted onions, bacon, and gruyère cheese and Eggs Benedict, poached eggs with French ham and hollandaise sauce.
The interior was carefully designed by Tiff Porter and Evan Collier of Arch Production, who set out to evoke the feeling of an authentic Parisian bistro for their customers. However, they did so with an important added goal: sustainability. Sustainable décor and furniture pieces found inside Steak Frites Bistro include a table made of wood reclaimed from a bowling alley, furniture upcycled from Tavolina (which previously occupied the space), walls adorned with hand-painted signage, hand-scratched mirrors and carefully curated photos and prints meant to evoke the spirits of both New York and Paris.
Looking ahead, Steak Frites Bistro is also set to launch lunch service this spring.

Osteria Accademia Brings Cozy Vibes to the Upper WestSide
BY LAUREN SCHUSTER
Looking for a cozy spot to enjoy delicious food and fi ne wine? Look no further than Osteria Accademia on the Upper West Side. The restaurant offers patrons Italian fare with a Mediterranean influence, and its warm lighting, intimate table settings and enticing menu invite you in for a uniquely homey dining experience. This atmosphere is certainly no accident. Osteria Accademia is the creation of restaurateur Huseyin Ozer (who is also behind Upper West Side mainstays Bodrum and Leyla) in partnership with Murat Akinci. The duo’s goal for Osteria Accademia was for neighborhood residents to truly feel at home, as if they were in the dining room of a family member or friend, where food, conversation and wine all flow effortlessly.
The restaurant’s menu was designed by a collaboration between Consulting Chef Massimilliano Convertini (Cipriani, Barolo) and Executive Chef Claudio Cristofoli (Ciprinai, Il Mulino). The chefs designed each dish on the menu to represent a different region of Italy and the dishes are composed of fresh, house-made pasta and imported Italian ingredients. The Antipasti course showcases a variety of dishes including Vitello Tonnato, a delicacy of cold, thinly sliced veal topped with dollops of tuna sauce dressed with capers; Eggplant Parmesan, baked eggplant and smoked mozzarella in tomato sauce served in a cast iron pan and Polpettine, three
house-made miniature meatballs that are a mixture of Angus beef and veal served in a light tomato sauce with crostini ricotta.
The next course, Pasta, features fresh, homemade pasta that is portioned out ahead of time, ensuring that it arrives at diners’ tables quickly. Highlights of the Pasta course include Taglioni Neri, a thin, long, ribbon-shaped pasta made with squid ink served with shrimp and eggplant in a lobster reduction sauce; Ravioli stuffed with tender veal served in a sauce made of butter and sage dusted with Parmigiano, Mafalde, a ribbon-shaped pasta with rippled edges with pistachio pesto and mint and Risotto with beets and Stracciatella.
Secondi (the main course) features mouthwatering options including Orata, butterfl ied and encrusted with herbed breadcrumbs and grilled whole, served with broccoli rabe; Braised Short Ribs, short ribs braised in red wine for four hours served atop mashed potatoes made with demi-glace and pecorino and a Lamb Burger, topped with goat cheese and caramelized onions.
Like the pasta dishes, the desserts are all made inhouse and include Zeppole, bite sized balls of fried dough served with Nutella; Cannoli, two pieces of cannoli fi lled with sweet ricotta and Moka Tiramisu, made with coffee-soaked lady fi ngers and
sweet mascarpone as well as a rotating selection of house made gelato and sorbet.
The Beverage Program was designed by Partner Murat Akinci. Because of Akinci’s unique talent for aligning drinks with cuisine, he acts as both general manager and sommelier. Akinci has crafted a list of approachable wines that are the best quality for the price and deftly included selections that are not commonly found at other restaurants. The program debuted with a selection of 10 white wines, 10 red wines and three sparkling wines by the bottle and by the glass, all from the best wine-producing regions in Italy. He has also included a curated list of Italian craft beers.
Behind the relaxing and cozy interior design of Osteria Accademia is Matt Murphy of MMD. The intimate space is lined with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves that are fi lled with a collection of titles from a decommissioned library. The books are interspersed with wine bottles creating a comfortable atmosphere conducive to intellectual conversations. At the rear of the restaurant is a small wine bar, behind which the kitchen sits, producing the delicious meals that patrons happily enjoy with their loved ones. Whether you’re there for a romantic date night, a joyful gathering of friends or a relaxed family meal, Osteria Accademia delivers the perfect atmosphere to connect deeply with your dinner companions.

MONTEREY
44 MANN ABOUT TOWN • FEBRUARY 2023 ON THE TABLE
Photos courtesy of Monterey
Midtown Manhattan is back and hotter than ever! Monterey, a brand new glamorous bold American restaurant, opened its doors this past October. Following their success at Isabelle’s Osteria, Dudi Sasson and Chef James Tracey, in partnership with Simon Oren, brought a retro-chic brasserie to Madison and 50th where the beloved Maloney and Porcelli used to reside.
Interior
Designed by Dudi Sasson in collaboration with Scott Kester, Monterey is arguably one of midtown’s more style-forward eateries. The first floor features high ceilings, massive windows, dramatic terrazzo tile flooring, lavish yet comfortable blue banquettes and a large marble-topped bar. Between the open kitchen and bar area is a beautiful staircase that takes you to the balcony for secluded dining featuring cozy salmon pink velvet circular booths, a private dining room and a 12-seat round table that is perfect for any celebratory occasion.
Food & Drink
A nationally acclaimed chef with over 30 years of culinary experience in the kitchens of Craft, Starr Restaurants, Gramercy Tavern and Lespinasse, Monterey’s Chef James Tracey pays homage to various Euro-American and Mediterranean culinary styles and techniques, serving dishes such as Pork Trotter with sweetbreads, smoked pearl onions and mustard seed; Crispy Lobster with avocado puree, jalapeno, kumquat and cilantro; Lumache with goose and duck ragout and whipped ricotta; Berkshire Pork Chops with gingered cabbage, hon shimeji mushrooms and five-spiced bacon and a variety of Prime Steaks such as a 40-day dry-aged Porterhouse and a 30-day dry-aged Strip. To add to the glam, there is a Raw Bar featuring seafood platters with options of Oysters and Little Neck Clams, Monkfish Liver and Tuna Tartare topped with Uni, Hokkaido Scallops with Ossetra Caviar, Salmon
Belly and Whole Lobster to name a few.
There are three custom-made carts including one serving Prime Rib au jus (a 14-ounce whole roasted prime rib seasoned with black pepper, served sliced to order, topped with au jus made of beef bones, mirepoix, tomato salt, Worcestershire and thyme); one offering Banana Foster flambéed tableside for two with Myers dark Rum, vanilla ice cream, pecans and a Martini Cart! You get to build your own classic-stirred cocktail by choosing your base spirit, vermouth, syrup or bitters, or just put yourself in the hands of the masters and treat yourself to The Ultimate Extra Chilled Monterey Martini. There is no shortage of fun nor photo-worthy moments at Monterey.
Operated by the same group as Isabelle’s Osteria, Dagon and Nice Matin, beverage director Aviram Turgeman’s cocktails are imaginative takes on classic favorites. Known for his award-winning wine lists, Turgeman takes it even further with a selection so extensive yet curated that you can have a bottle to pair with almost everything on the menu. The wine list reflects the classics of the world with benchmark producers of each appellation. The emphasis is France and the USA with a focus on new California. A page of the list is dedicated to coveted Burt Williams & Ed Selyem wines which Turgeman was able to procure from a private collector, and the Pinot Noirs are rumored to be there to steal the show.
About Chef James Tracey
Chef James Tracey is executive chef/partner of Monterey, Midtown Manhattan’s latest retro-chic American Brasserie and Isabelle’s Osteria, a seasonally driven Italian restaurant in New York City’s Gramercy Park neighborhood.
A nationally acclaimed chef with over 30 years of
culinary experience, Chef Tracey’s culinary inspiration comes from greenmarkets and local farms, creating dishes with clean, bold flavors that best showcase the ingredients. Tracey garnered Craft and Colicchio & Sons three-star reviews from The New York Times.
Trained at the Culinary Institute of America, he started his career as a line cook in Washington, D.C. before moving to New York City in 1997 where he held several positions in top restaurants including executive chef of Crafted Hospitality. He moved to Philadelphia where he was the director of culinary operations at Starr Restaurant Organization, overseeing 34 restaurants along the East Coast, and he collaborated with external chef partners on new restaurant food concepts and staff development.
In 2016, Chef Tracey moved to Washington, D.C., where he served as the culinary director of Neighborhood Restaurant Group, overseeing 18 restaurants in Washington D.C., Virginia and Maryland, including directing and collaborating with chefs on menu development, staffing and the overall running of their restaurant.
In 2019, he moved back to New York City to open Isabelle’s Osteria, a neighborhood favorite offering contemporary Italian and Mediterranean dishes.

White Olive Mediterranean Fusion in Midtown
BY BENNETT MARCUS
Authentic Greek Fare
Restaurant industry veterans Karim Sopariwalla and Amin Himani have just launched their newest venture, White Olive, serving Mediterranean fusion cuisine in Midtown Manhattan. The menu by Chef Hasan Karci offers up a fresh take on authentic Greek fare; think grilled branzino, lamb chops, grilled octopus and authentic mezze spreads. Named for the rare white olives grown in Greece and southern Italy, White Olive evokes the Mediterranean culture and food that the pair became enamored with while visiting Turkey and Greece. “The balance of spicy and savory is what truly captivated us,” said Himani. “We wanted to take both worlds and create a culinary masterpiece, so we thought of the white olive, which can also be found in coastal areas of northern Africa, Portugal and Malta.” A noteworthy fact about white olives, he added, is that they’re sweeter than green and black olives because of their lower levels of antioxidants—your palate will thank you!
Ritz-Carlton Istanbul-Trained Chef
Chef Hasan Karci, a master of Mediterranean cooking, is an alumna of The Ritz-Carlton Istanbul and now brings the same traditional European- and Asian-inspired flavors to White Olive. “We met Hasan while at The Ritz in Turkey, and we flew him in because we knew right away that he would bring our culinary vision to life,” said Sopariwalla. Karci’s menu features dishes like Lavraki, a char-grilled Mediterranean sea bass known for its light and flaky texture and mildly sweet flavor, baby lamb chops served with fresh seasonal vegetables on a bed of couscous and spicy ezme salad, a house specialty with tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, green apples and pomegranates fired up with jalapenos and red peppers.
ON THE TABLE
“Customer satisfaction is our number one goal,” Sopariwalla said. The two also own a number of restaurants together, including Seattle Café in Manhattan, and several concessions at NY Waterway stations and grab-and-go operations at five-star hotels, including the Park Lane on Central Park South and M Social in Times Square. After graduating from Fairleigh Dickinson University with a business degree, Sopariwalla joined his cousin’s restaurant organization, and over the past 21 years eventually became a partner and co-owner.
White Olive: Fulfillment of A Dream
Now, they’re thrilled to open White Olive to the dining public. The location, at 39 West 55th Street, is in the center of everything, close to MoMA, Fifth Avenue shopping, Central Park, Carnegie Hall and Rockefeller Center. The space was offered to them by its owner. “They had seen our past performance, and we were lucky to jump onboard,” Sopariwalla said. “We always had a dream of opening an authentic Greekstyle restaurant with a modern flare. And that’s exactly what we did.”
For more information, please visit whiteolivesnyc.com.
Exotic Drinks
Highlights of White Olive’s cocktail menu include drinks that pay tribute to the Mediterranean fusion theme. Try the Mangopolitan, made with Bacardi mango, fresh lime juice, mango purée and a hint of cranberry juice, or the Fig and Fabulous, a cocktail-style martini created with Figenza Mediterranean fig-flavored vodka, fresh lime juice and pomegranate juice, garnished with a dried fig.
Contemporary Greek Décor
Seed Design Planning (SEED DBC) Inc, a New York-based interior design firm, created the coolly understated look at White Olive, which has the feel of a chic taverna on a whitewashed Aegean island. “The inspiration behind the décor and color scheme is contemporary Greek style,” said Sopariwalla, who adorned his sandstone walls and white oak floors with cream-colored leather chairs with elegant gold frames. A warm LED-lit wall leads you into the space, which seats 70 for lunch and dinner.
Seed CEO Lesly Zamor is well known in the hospitality industry, having designed prominent hot spots including Donatella Restaurant, TAJ Lounge, Avenue Nightclub, Slate and Penthouse at the Dream Hotel in New York, as well as Lavo Nightclub and Restaurant in Las Vegas.
River Dock Restaurant & Nanking
Karim Sopariwalla and Amin Himani are cousins who grew up in Mumbai, India in homes where cooking was a priority, filled with spices and family. “We have always been foodies; we loved cooking as kids,” said Sopariwalla. “And now we enjoy hosting our friends and our customers.” Himani owns high-end Asian fusion spot River Dock Restaurant and Bar, Seattle Coffee Roasters and Nanking, a vegan-friendly eatery that combines the explosive flavors of India, China and Thailand. Sopariwalla currently owns ZZ Pizza Bar and Grill in Staten Island, where customers are not only raving about the baked-to-perfection crust, but also about the affordable prices.

Rémy Martin Teams Up With Cultural Tastemakers To Celebrate The Lunar New Year With “Family Spirit” And The Opulence Of XO
Rémy Martin has teamed up with a group of cultural tastemakers to toast to the Year of the Rabbit, celebrating their unique backgrounds and traditions through Family Spirit. The campaign, titled “The Lunar New Year Family Spirit” spotlights the intersection of heritage, tradition and modernity while bringing to life a celebration, guided by the Family Spirit and centered around the timelessness of Rémy Martin XO. Through this campaign, Rémy Martin showcases the excellence of Rémy Martin XO and honors Asian culture and the distinct traditions across the generations of families and friends who gather at the table of Lunar New Year celebrations.
Rémy Martin brings together actor and Martial Artist Lewis Tan; Fashion Influencer Jessica Wang; Michelin-Starred Chef Brandon Jew; Photographer Kevin Wong and Cultural Entrepreneur and Producer Danielle Chang, to illustrate how each of their cultures and experiences have shaped their Lunar New Year celebrations and how they individually personify excellence. Through the creative lens of world-renowned, Hong-Kong born, award-winning Photographer Michelle Watt, the campaign offers a unique visual narrative that spotlights virtual hues, whimsical styles and embodies the Lunar New Year spirit. Throughout the campaign, Rémy Martin highlights each exceptional talent partner, illustrating “Family Spirit” as a momentous occasion where time and traditions are shared with Rémy Martin XO, food and passions and stories are passed down to future generations for the pursuit of excellence.
“Rémy Martin celebrates diverse cultures in which rich tradition, values and voices can be expressed from one generation to the next, while encouraging each individual to express themselves in new ways,” shared Tina Reejsinghani, vice president, Rémy Martin Americas. “With our incredible talent part-
ners, this campaign showcases how Rémy Martin XO is a celebratory staple at the Lunar New Year table. While our family and traditions evolve, a table with Rémy Martin XO allows for friends and family from various cultures to join together to toast to the new year.”
Working with Danielle Chang, the campaign accentuates Rémy Martin XO’s place at the Lunar New Year table through curated events in San Francisco and New York City. During these events, the cultural entrepreneur and producer will unveil the “Lunar New Year Opulence Revealed Experience,” paying homage to abundance, prosperity, longevity, good fortune and luck, personified by the radiance of Rémy Martin XO. Throughout these events, Rémy Martin XO’s full aromatic complexity and exceptionally full-bodied richness will be captured through the Asian elements incorporated within the “Lunar New Year Opulence Revealed Experience.” The tasting experience brings the auspicious spirit of the East to life, manifesting the radiance of Rémy Martin XO through shared customary motifs of Asian culture. Through the incorporation of heritage spices on the table, XO’s aromas of plum, mature fig and candied orange, opening on spicy notes with a hint of cinnamon and freshly crushed hazelnuts, and finishing on gourmet notes of roasted cocoa beans, honey and ginger are fully revealed.
Additionally, Chang has tapped into the number eight to create eight lucky food pairings, which highlight both the significance of the number eight and the opulence of Rémy Martin XO when paired together. Eight, which is a lucky number in Asian culture as it represents prosperity, can also be seen within the “The Lunar New Year Family Spirit” campaign, which features eight individuals sat around an opulent tablescape. Tickets to the events in both cities are available for purchase on Lucky Rice’s website for $88, with a portion of ticket proceeds going toward local charitable organizations,
The Center for Asian American Media and Welcome to Chinatown. Together, Rémy Martin and these non-profit organizations aim to highlight the richness and diversity of Asian American culture and offer support for the community and future generations to continue to promote their rich heritage.
To commemorate the Year of the Rabbit, Rémy Martin will release a limited-edition XO bottle to enjoy with friends and family during the holidays. The signature bottle is accentuated with a beautiful foil of elegant gold, red and white abstract details. This intricately designed pattern covers the face of the distinctive Rémy Martin XO decanter and is housed inside a rich red coffret that opens to form a fan-like structure, accentuating the pinnacle opulent tasting experience of Rémy Martin XO. The limited-edition bottle is available for purchase in stores nationwide and at online retailers for a suggested retail price of $209.99. A Rémy Martin Lunar New Year Family Spirit Tray is also available on ReserveBar for a suggested retail price of $300. The kit, which brings the Lunar New Year Opulence Revealed experience to those looking to celebrate at home, includes five festive food pairings, centaur coasters and a 375mL bottle of Rémy Martin XO.
Rémy Martin XO is best enjoyed neat, with a single ice cube, or in an elevated cocktail that highlights the expression’s exceptional flavors. This year, Rémy Martin invites those celebrating to enjoy XO with The Imperial Old Fashioned, a seasonal take on a classic cocktail, showcasing XO’s rich flavors against the zesty freshness of Cointreau and sweet aromatic bitters.

EXPRESSING EMOTION THROUGH ART
BY LAUREN SCHUSTER
s far back as New York-based visual artist Courtney Minor can remember, she has always been a creative person. While she may not have always expressed it through typical art forms throughout the years, her creative passions could not be kept at bay for long. In 2019, Minor began creating mixed media collages, and what started as just a fun project has since blossomed into a successful career as a visual artist.
“I’ve always been into art, design and anything creative,” Minor said. “I did a lot more of it when I was a child. So, when I was in elementary school and middle school, I used to get lots of different art awards and my art teacher would always put me up for different programs and stuff like that. But then by the time I hit high school, I just stopped making and creating anything.”
After moving away from art creation as a teen, Minor continued other pursuits throughout her adult life. That is, until the purchase of a simple item—a new iPhone—
renewed her passion for art.
“I stopped creating and I didn’t make anything that you would consider a visual art until about three and a half to four years ago,” Minor said. “I got the new Apple iPhone, and it had the updated camera, and it was such a good camera that on my travels (I love to travel all over the world), I started taking photographs because I got feedback from my family. They were like ‘you’ve been to so many different countries and we don’t see anything!’ so I was like ‘okay I’ll start taking some photos; I have an updated camera [now].’”
This simple family request to take more photographs was the spark that Minor’s creativity needed.
“I took a photograph of myself, and I kept thinking ‘wow I want to turn this into something,’” Minor said. “That ‘turn it into something’ became a collage, which became my first collage portrait, which became my first collage painting. That was around the beginning of 2019, and after that I started creating and I haven’t stopped since.”
Since early 2019, Minor has fully delved into the art world, experimenting with different types of art.
“I do mostly mixed-media collage on different surfaces,” Minor said. “I use canvas paper most often, and I put it on a stretched wood frame, but it’s more canvas paper rather than a true canvas. I find it easier to work with for the kind of collages I do.”
Once she has her initial canvas ready, Minor then gets to work layering on other materials.
“I use all kinds of media, I mean, anything I can get my hands on,” Minor said. “Sometimes I sew into my work. I often glue a lot of my work, some Mod Podge and other adhesives, wood adhesives. I take all my own photography. Then, ironically [my videos] started out with making reels and videos for social media, and then people kept commenting on how much they liked my little ‘miniature films,’ so that’s why I ended up putting it on my art website because [people] were like ‘it’s art in itself.’”
Over time Minor has expanded her mediums and is looking forward to trying out more new materials in the near future.
“I have evolved and now I am working on true, real canvas as well as wood and metal, and as of next month, I am going to be stepping into creating sculptures,” Minor said.

“I can’t wait to show the world that. It’s going to be a mixed media collage but it’s a sculpture. I’ve been saying how I want to make my collages more three-dimensional, and I think this is the way I can do it.”
When creating her artwork, Minor often finds the most inspiration in those who are closest to her.
“I’m often inspired by my friends and family; they’re often the subjects of many of my works,” Minor said. “[Sometimes] I do pick people at random that I meet in my daily life or when I’m traveling. My one rule is, I try my best not to pick people who are aspiring or are currently models. That’s not who I want. I want what I call ‘real people,’ because I feel like I get more real, raw emotion out of that.”
Minor also finds inspiration for her work through connecting with people during her travels.
“For my new works, the ones I’ll be working on when I go to Mexico later this year, I’ll definitely be focusing on people who are indigenous to the country that I’m visiting as I make my collage work,” Minor said.
Minor’s art pieces focus on portraying certain emotions that relate to the subjects of her pieces.
“In my ‘Families’ series, the theme there is love and joy, happiness, specifically filial love, as well as romantic love between partners,” Minor said. “My ‘Blues’ series, the one that you’ve probably seen most on social media [re-

cently], that one is focused on art therapy and grief, because I lost several members of my family in 2021, and that series was focused on how all of us including myself processed that grief and turned it into something that was beautiful.”
While family provides an intense emotional connection for Minor, she also looks to the outside world when creating her art.
“My other work, depending on the emotion, can be related to a world event that has touched me, or just an emotion that I want to manifest, something that I’m not feeling at the moment, and I want to,” Minor said. “So, you’ll see that sometimes my paintings can be chaotic or all over the place, some of them are very minimalist or minimal in many ways, and that’s because I’m really contemplating a specific emotion or a feeling. But it’s always emotions that are the core themes of my work.”
Minor has also recently ventured into the world of NFTs.
“I would make little videos of my artwork, so I was posting them on social media,” Minor said. “I would often make a video, a little almost gif-like movie reel, 10 seconds here, 30 seconds there, of the painting that I would have just completed. I combined a painting with a behind-thescenes of me working on the painting or close ups of the image, and I would also layer them with different layers in Photoshop so that they would have different effects. Then, I would add music; I typically buy royalty free music. So, I was doing that already and then I realized ‘oh well this NFT thing is basically me just minting things I already have.’ When I was researching it, the ones where the items moved a little bit, the ones that weren’t a static image, got a little more attention than, say, a static NFT image, and so that’s when I started minting the videos of the artwork that I did, because I made them anyways; I always made them. I realized this could be another source of people viewing my art and viewing another aspect of me, which is the NFT creation, the video creation that I do.”
For the month of February, Saatchi Art has chosen Minor as one of 15 artists that they are creating for an online exhibition called “Black Assemblage and Collage Artists to Note” in honor of Black History Month. Additionally, one of Minor’s paintings was chosen by The William Vale hotel in Brooklyn, New York to be part of a special exhibition on a digital display of rotating art in their lobby. In March, Minor will be showing one of her paintings, entitled “Sheila Memaw,” which is part of her “Blues” series at the Kente Royal Gallery in honor of Women’s History Month. In April and May, Minor will be attending art fairs in both Chicago and Dallas. After a well-deserved summer break, this fall, Minor will then be part of an artist residency in Pueblo, Mexico with Aquetopia, working on her new series, “The Others.”

Dr. Ken Winnard OneLife Health & Performance
By Margaret Bastick Luce
Meet Dr. Ken Winnard, the vibrant Jupiter, Florida-based doctor bringing cutting-edge protocols to South Florida. Peptides and PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin) are just a few specialized protocols for men and women alike. Entering the beautiful space of OneLife Health & Performance, being greeted by the skilled staff and noting the wide selection of modalities that invigorate and regenerate all ages, I know I have come to the right place. No matter what your circumstance is–overworked executive, exhausted mom or professional athlete–you will be grateful that you prioritize your well-being.
A former athlete himself, Dr. Winnard is known as the secret weapon for professional golfers and keeps them in tip-top shape for their competitions, performance stress, travel and daily demands of the lifestyle. Golfers love the spectrum of services from IV therapies to individualized testing. Professional golfers are required to be in top mental and physical shape. Understanding what is happening within their bodies provides invaluable information on and off the course.
Whether we are talking about the nasty side effects of daily stress, environmental pollutants, or skin damage due to sun exposure, it is great to see the new technologies that are offered. “To help remove unwanted damage to the skin, we use the Lumenis Stellar M22 Laser, which now includes the ResurFX device. This is the only fractional, true non-ablative laser used for skincare resurfacing. It is ideal for patients who prefer a milder treatment approach with less downtime and no risk of skin infection,” Dr. Winnard said.
Recently finding myself under the weather, my trainer Phil Williams prompted me to make an appointment with Dr. Winnard. I am certainly glad I did, because my first impression of the energetic Dr. Winnard and the wealth of knowledge he delivered was eye-opening and refreshing. Receiving the glutathione infusion alongside the education that the staff shared has me looking forward to returning to this beautiful care facility. Learn-
ing about what is going on inside us is imperative. Understanding that we are bio-individualized and unique in our biological makeup and requirements make this an invaluable resource for building and maintaining well-being.
“Welcome to OneLife Health & Performance. I founded OneLife after years as a hospitalist in the traditional ‘western’ medicine setting,” Dr. Winnard said. “I saw many patients struggle when diagnosed with chronic disease with little to no information about how they got there or nowhere to go from there. I knew something had to be done.”
With a contagious vigor and verve, Dr. Winnard took his years of experience and created a clinic that is committed to preventing illness and chronic diseases before they occur. I witnessed first-hand his big heart and care for his patients. You relax when he enters the room and notice how he personifies health and well-being.
“I believe there are many pieces to the ‘health puzzle’ and that we must optimize all aspects of your health to prevent disease. This includes proper nutrition, hydration, fitness, sleep, stress management and more,” Dr. Winnard said.
He and his marvelous team at OneLife Health & Performance are here to help. We keenly know that there are many ways to spend our valuable resources of time and money. To quote the famous proverb on health: Good health is above wealth. Whether you are dealing with a serious illness or desiring to look and feel your best, I encourage you to pick up the phone and book an appointment for yourself or a family member. Mount Sinai Answers the Call to Advance Women’s Health Research
Photos Courtesy of Mount Sinai Health System
Women make up more than half of the population of the United States. They use health care services more frequently than men do and they make most of the health care decisions for their families. However, while women live longer, they experience poorer health than men on a variety of outcomes. To date, too few institutions have established interdisciplinary research institutes dedicated to advancing science in the field of women’s health.
Three researchers—two leaders and one prominent new addition—are among the many at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai who are dedicated to addressing these gaps in knowledge and clinical care. Recently, they took a moment to share their thoughts.
semi-foreign being within her own body—remains poorly understood. Better understanding of how immune cells traffic between the mother and child would undoubtedly advance discovery, not only for maternal-fetal health but also for cancer and transplant biology.
We remain not just in the dark about pregnancy but truly about women’s health across the lifespan. We have seen what can occur when there is focus and commitment to advancing health. For example, cardiovascular well-being has improved over the last few decades because of a continuous research focus, development of new therapeutics, and advancement of a precision-based approach to care.
and empowering investigators to pursue understudied areas in women’s health research. Importantly, we are creating a new Institute of Female Biology (IFaB) whose main mission will be to advance understanding of biology that drives health and disease in women. IFaB will focus on conditions that—while common and creating an undue burden for women— have remained largely unattended to, such as infertility, preterm birth, preeclampsia, endometriosis, fibroids, polycystic ovary syndrome, menopause and so many others.
Michal A. Elovitz, MD Dean, Women’s Health Research Professor, Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science Director, Institute of Female Biology
Women’s health and women’s health science have remained stagnant for decades. The United States has one of the highest rates of maternal morbidity and mortality among industrialized nations. One of the leading drivers of this is preeclampsia. One hundred years ago, preeclampsia was described as “toxemia,” as it was believed a toxin must be responsible for the multiorgan injury resulting from this disease, which affects one in 12 pregnancies. The treatment for toxemia was simply delivery, and 100 years later, that remains the only definitive treatment for this life-threatening condition. In 2023, preeclampsia remains mostly unsolved.
Pregnancy health remains one of the most understudied areas in medicine. The phenomenon of how a mother tolerates a fetus—a
However, these benefits have accrued disproportionately to men. Failure to attend to sex-specific biology has significantly hampered improvement in cardiovascular health for women. Importantly, the lack of scientific focus on female-specific diseases, such as infertility, endometriosis, pelvic floor disorders, menopause and gynecologic pre-cancers and cancers, has resulted in a failure to make significant improvements in health outcomes for women at all points in their lifespan.
But this does not have to be our truth. We can do better for ourselves, for all women, and for our daughters. Mount Sinai saw this opportunity, and I am so ready and enthusiastic to lead this charge. As the inaugural Dean for Women’s Health Research, I am being empowered, along with amazing colleagues at Icahn Mount Sinai, to create a new paradigm for advancing women’s health. We will develop new opportunities in women’s health science by leveraging existing expertise in diverse fields, creating collaborative networks
Mount Sinai recognized that we have all the tools to make things different for women’s health. If we have learned anything from the COVID-19 pandemic, it is that bringing together multidisciplinary teams, innovating new approaches, revealing key biological processes, and targeting plausible therapeutics can result in rapid scientific discovery and viable therapeutics to immediately improve health. With the support and innovation of Mount Sinai, we intend to leverage all of these tools and approaches to transform women’s health science and improve women’s health.
Women should not have to suffer because we do not have answers. They should not have to suffer because no one has invested in understanding female biology. They should not have to keep being told that there is no answer and that no one knows why they are in pain, or cannot have a baby, or why they lost a baby, or why they do not feel normal in midlife. At Mount Sinai, we are choosing to do more. To do so much more. We are choosing to make a difference, to understand biology, to improve women’s health. It is way past time to make women’s health science, women’s health and women a priority.

It is time to make women’s health science a top priority
Leslee Shaw, PhD Director, The Blavatnik Family Women’s Health Research Institute Professor, Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science, Cardiology and Population Health Science and Policy
There has been a recent focus on women’s health, and what is striking is the paucity of medical knowledge available to practicing clinicians to guide everyday decision-making with their female patients. At Icahn Mount Sinai, we have decided that revolutionary ideas and targeted research are the key to rectifying challenges women face in health care.
We have created a dedicated Women’s Health Research Institute that seeks to link all stages of a woman’s life to provide a more comprehensive view of disease precursors and identify novel strategies for early intervention—the important means to improve the lives of women. By creating an institute that has dedicated programs from birth to death, we bring together scientists and physicians who learn from one another’s expertise and understand the varying causes of disorders like cancer or cardiovascular disease. Our research teams include scientists with wide-ranging skills such as the use of artificial intelligence methods to
explore electronic health records, or interfacing obstetrics with cardiology to form a better understanding of hypertension in women. Early-stage illnesses, such as pregnancy-related hypertension or diabetes, lead to lifelong patterns of uncontrolled blood pressure and glucose and contribute to many adverse complications of stroke, heart attack or heart failure.
For all conditions, there are many precursor features that, once identified, can lead to great advances in diagnosis and treatment. Putting together these intricate patterns of risk features requires pioneering research led by internationally renowned scientists who focus on thinking longitudinally about the woman—across the lifespan. This would allow links to form between common chronic conditions, including cancer and cardiovascular disease, and help us find novel associations with disorders such as depression.
For women, early detection has an immeasurable benefit in preventing advancing disease and early death. The ultimate goal is for women to live their lives fully across all stages of their lives. However, research is way behind, and our knowledge gaps in women’s health are too wide — contributing to unnec-

essary illness and death. Inadequacies of care for women have been reported for nearly 30 years, and we believe that it is time for this to change.
For women’s health scientists and physicians, research innovation requires challenging all our existing knowledge and creating novel approaches to unearth sex-based mechanisms across diseases. We propose that a newly revised approach to women’s health research is possible and will help to realize major strides in improving the health and well-being of women.

include educating health care providers and patients on early detection tactics to prevent heart disease in women, scaling up heart health programs in highly populated and underdeveloped regions, and prioritizing sex-specific research on heart disease in women.
Roxana Mehran, MD Professor, Medicine (Cardiology), and Population Health Science and Policy Director of the Women’s Heart and Vascular Center at Mount Sinai Director of Interventional Cardiovascular Research and Clinical Trials
Despite being responsible for causing 35 percent of deaths in women each year, cardiovascular disease (CVD) in women remains understudied, under-recognized, under-diagnosed and under-treated.
With colleagues within Mount Sinai and around the world, we have long been working to address these inequities. In 2021, I proudly collaborated with 17 experts from 11 countries on the Lancet Women and Cardiovascular Disease Commission, producing the first-ever global report on CVD in women. The allfemale-led commission outlined 10 ambitious recommendations to tackle inequalities by targeting diagnosis, treatment and prevention strategies to reduce CVD in women. These
These ideas will be further explored during a half-day symposium on Friday, February 17, at the InterContinental Barclay in New York City, featuring field-leading experts in cardiovascular care and research. The event will be held in conjunction with our nonprofit organization, Women as One, as part of its flagship conference, RISE, which supports the professional growth of women in medicine—a relevant combination of events in February, now known as Heart Month.
Women supporting women is essential, among physicians but also across provider and patient lines. Women trust each other, and we must find ways to capitalize on this trust for the betterment of patient care and their workplace environments.
Support for women in cardiology is integral to our work at Mount Sinai Heart, where we are launching a multispecialty Women’s Heart and Vascular Center, with clinics specifically designed to screen, assess and educate women about their level of individual risk for cardiovascular disease. This will be done through a cross-disciplinary team of cardiologists, subspecialists and researchers with expertise in women’s heart health. The goal is to assure that no stone is left unturned and that care providers are informed of their patients’ needs throughout their entire experience at Mount Sinai.
Women tend to be stereotyped into certain categories of health problems, such as anxiety or hormonal changes, and physicians miss the fact that what they really have is heart disease. For example, symptoms such as angina and chest pain in women may be misdiagnosed as anxiety or other psychosomatic disorders. Strategies are urgently needed to tackle such inequities in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of heart disease in women.
Another goal of the Mount Sinai Women’s Heart and Vascular Center and across my collaborative work is to ensure women have a greater presence in cardiovascular research. Women are historically underrepresented in cardiology at large and disproportionately so in the world of clinical research. With fewer women in research, fewer women enroll in clinical studies, leading to a lack of evidence for what treatments are actually effective for women patients. Many research organizations now recognize this as an opportunity but struggle with how to bring more women into the research fold.
We want women to know they truly matter. We also want to bring realistic solutions to the forefront. The work we are doing through Mount Sinai and our partnership initiatives around the world speak to this. We know we can make a difference.

Navigating the Ultimate Adventure of Antarctic Expedition Cruising
BY NORAH BRADFORD
When thinking about travel and those “bucket lists” or ultimate destinations where people have always desired to go, the location that often elicits the most emotion is just a single word: “Antarctica.”
The seventh continent on our planet, comparable in size to the United States, has a wintertime population of around 1,000 and is surrounded by the Southern Ocean. Antarctica is typically accessed by sea from the tip of South America across the renowned Drake Passage, and is both simultaneously awe-inspiring and off-putting to a number of seasoned travelers.
Unlike the Arctic Circle in the north, which can be directly accessed by air, Antarctica is treaty-regulated by international law and is kept as pristine as possible to enable scientific research on the ecosystem and climate conditions that affect us all. The fact that the South Pole was dis -
covered barely a century ago adds to the mystery of the continent of wind, ice and snow.
Visiting Antarctica is typically done during the spring and summer season (from November onwards), as a winter visit would be too harsh, not to mention dangerous. Thinking about packing for the expedition requires care and should be thought of as a combination of casual clothes and apres-ski layering for the daytime expeditions. Also do not forget sunglasses, sunscreen and a camera with a landscape and/or zoom lens for wildlife – this is unlikely to be a trip that you repeat, and the photographic opportunities are immense.
The Drake Passage – typically a one-to-two-day sea crossing from South America – is often nicknamed the “Drake Shake” or the “Drake Lake,” referring to how unpredictable ocean conditions can be, which can lead to either a serene passage or a fearsome two days hanging on as the ship’s crew guide the vessel safely through. This comes
after traveling from North America or Europe halfway around the globe to South America and then connecting to another flight to get to the southern tip of the continent – all this before crossing the passage.
Luxury cruise line Silversea thought about this and how valuable time can be for its passengers. Silversea has now figured out how to marry their latest expedition ship, the all-new purpose-built Silver Endeavour, with an Antarctica air-bridge from South America into King George Island (about half a day’s sailing from the Antarctic Peninsula), the most accessible region of the continent in spring and summer time. Flying conditions (particularly visibility) play a big role in the timing of the flights across the Antarctic air-bridge.
Once landed at King George Island wearing the expedition gear supplied by Silversea on the flight, you just have to be guided into a zodiac boat on the beach in full expedition clothing and

journey to the ship. Just arriving at the Silver Endeavour is an expedition in itself, and a preview of the excitement to follow.
Even travelers familiar with cruise travel may well be thinking, “What is an Expedition Cruise?” or “What makes Antarctica different from Alaska or the Arctic?” These are fair questions, and having experienced others, I would suggest that Antarctica is truly a unique experience.
Expedition cruise vessels are typically highly capable for the task and more compact than a regular cruise ship in many cases. Unlike a cruise to the Mediterranean or Caribbean where the itinerary involves a port visit every day (either docked alongside or a tender ride away), the expedition cruise is all about flexibility. Nature determines the schedule, and the expedition ship has a highly experienced team who decides each day where is safe to land and reconnoiter the route for an on-land hike.
Antarctica is fantastic. What distinguishes it perhaps is not just how wild and remote it feels – for
example there is absolutely no sound or smell other than the wind and occasionally the penguins. You feel like you are a visitor to another world. There are no aircraft trails in the sky, no docks, paved roads, clear pathways or basically anything other than nature and the wildlife. The rules for visitors also add to the feeling of being from another planet – maintain distance from any wildlife, don’t sit down or disturb the natural environment.
The varieties of penguins could well be the highlight of anyone’s visit – the Gentoo, Chinstrap and Adele are amazing to watch, providing endless entertainment, partly because of their having no interaction with people. Whales swimming, glaciers calving into the sea, avalanches in the mountain ranges above – it feels remote, wild, primal, God’s Country – with the benefit of a cordon bleu meal, stiff cocktail, hot shower and clean sheets in the evening – something we imagine that the great explorers dreamt of more than once.
Whilst the ship is compact, do not think for one moment it is not luxurious. Suites are well ap -
pointed and extremely comfortable. Dining options cover the spectrum with the high-end option being the La Dame restaurant. The Otium spa offers a range of treatments to relax after a day’s expedition ashore. There is even a gift shop containing useful items of clothing, expedition necessities and even the only bear you will find on this continent (at least a plush toy version of it).
For those who need to keep in touch with home, complimentary wireless internet connectivity is very good. However, the connection can be affected locally from time to time, which, given the location at the bottom of the world and satellite positioning, is understandable.
The focal point of the ship’s entertainment is the nightly briefing where the expedition team provides a brief on the day and what potentially lies ahead, as well as lectures from experts in the fields of oceanography, ornithology and history to contextualize what you have seen and will see in the coming days.
Although the itineraries can seem short, they offer a window into a unique continent and a genuine once-in-a-lifetime travel experience; and who knows, maybe it will grant you the taste for more!

VILLA MARIE SAINT-BARTH IS BRINGING A TASTE OF “LA DOLCE VITA” TO THE CARIBBEAN ISLE WITH THE RECENT LAUNCH OF A BRAND-NEW AUTHENTIC ITALIAN RESTAURANT
Photos courtesy of Villa Marie Saint-Barth
Located on the glamorous island of St Barths – just eight square miles wide, with yearround sunshine and paradisiac beaches – is beautifully bohemian Villa Marie Saint-Barth. St Barths remains one of the world’s most sought-after holiday destinations – just eight square miles and with year-round sunshine, authentic French charm and unspoiled beaches glowing with breezy shades of blue, reflecting the azure waters that surround the island. From paddling and snorkeling to morning yoga classes for early risers, there is plenty to do for guests of all ages.
The hotel is family owned-and-run by Maisons et Hôtels Sibuet and is the group’s first property outside of mainland France. Villa Marie Saint-Barth is situated on the iconic Bay of St Jean and looks out over the famous Colombier beach, an undisturbed stretch of pristine shore at the far end of Pelican beach, where lush vegetation frames white sands and crystal-clear turquoise waters are just steps from the shoreline. The famous Colombier Beach is located just beyond a rocky hill and is only accessible by boat or foot. It is not as simple to get to as other beaches on the island for non-hotel guests and access involves a 30-minute hike across a narrow, forested path surrounded by indigenous wildlife such as tortoises and mountain goats. This narrow access means the beach is mostly empty and known as the island’s most picturesque stretch of sand – the perfect spot for swimming and snorkeling or just relaxing on the white sands looking out to the glistening Caribbean Sea.
With 21 cottages and suites, the hotel is named after the label’s much-loved property of the same name in St Tropez. Suites at Villa Marie offer guests a secluded and stylish retreat with breath-taking views overlooking the tropical gardens and out to the heavenly beach, particularly the Master Villas. The villas comprise of two double bedrooms, an indoor lounge and en-suite bathrooms, along with bohemian styled interiors. This unique style is complemented with
brightly patterned cushions, white wicker chairs, handmade Indonesian seashell mirrors, an elegant roll-top bathtub and artisanal furnishings. The relaxing design of the rooms is in keeping with the tropical surroundings and enhanced by objects d’art. The Sibuet family has recently enhanced its strong culinary offering with a brand-new Italian restaurant, Dolce Vita. The new dining concept embodies the Caribbean charm iconic to Villa Marie paired with a chic Sicilian flair in tones of bright yellow –bringing a vibrant slice of Italy to the island. This new venue boasts a romantic atmosphere matched with a relaxed dining experience to encourage guests to relish in the sounds of Italian music in a relaxed setting. The menu includes culinary classics such as Spaghetti alle Vongole, Escalope with Lemon, and Cacio e Pepe theatrically flambéed in a parmesan
wheel. To match the “dolce” with the “vita,” delectable Italian classics such as Tiramisu and Vanilla Pana Cotta with a citrus marmalade are deserts not to miss.
Villa Marie Saint-Barth also includes Gyp Sea Beach Club – a few minutes from the hotel, on Pelican beach and the ultimate hotspot to dine, drink and soak up the sun. The restaurant, bar and beach club is designed with Villa Marie’s effortlessly chic, bohemian flair in mind - cementing the hotel as one of the must visit destinations on this paradise island. The venue features comfortable wooden sofas and stylish sun loungers to while away in the sunshine with casual culinary offerings such as the beach side barbeque featuring the likes of organic poultry, catch-of-theday lobster, smoked rib of beef, and a Caribbean classic, pineapple roasted in rum. From starter through to dessert, almost everything is done on the barbecue – whether it be roasted, smoked, grilled and braised, the culinary team have embodied the authentic, rustic Caribbean cooking technique resulting in incredible dishes. Starters include Caribbean salt cod fritters, Crab cake, Gyp Sea’s tartinade with Tzatziki, sea urchin tarama and pea hummus, while mains include linguine with fresh lobster, organic roasted chicken with Caribbean spices and smoked sweet potatoes with a habanero spiced jus. The rum bar is the ultimate spot to enjoy lunch or cocktails with rare and unique rums, the finest of cigars and daily, fresh fruit juices. The Gyp Sea Boutique also features the most beautiful brands and authentic, unforgettable gifts from this slide of paradise. Why not finish off the day with an exceptional hot shell massage to soothe and relieve muscles among beachy surrounds?
Rates at Villa Marie Saint-Barth start from €550 (currently approx. $552) B&B, for two guests. For more information, visit en.saint-barth.villamarie.fr/

Waterfront Rising
Olara, West Palm Beach’s Most-Anticipated High-Rise, Reimagines Life on Flagler’s
BY CAROLINA BUIA

SUNSHINE STATE
OF MIND
Pack your bags? More like pack up your life as you once knew it. Last August, the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles saw more drivers’ licenses change from New York to Florida than in any other single month in history. One chartered flight company, XO, is “‘tripling down’ on shared private flights between New York and South Florida” this year, according to Aviation International News. People are still flocking–and flying–down to Palm Beach, and not just for the season. While other housing markets have cooled, home sales in the Palm Beaches remain robust and inventory is still scant. The influx of newly minted Floridians has created wait lists at golf clubs and private schools. It begs the question: Where will these new denizens settle?
Chris Schlank is betting that many will gravitate towards Olara, his buzzy new 26-story building along Palm Beach’s intracoastal waterway. “Olara is poised to transform the waterfront of West Palm Beach into a world-class destination,” said Schlank, president of Savanna, an esteemed real estate development firm with offices in Miami, West Palm Beach and New York City.
Dreamily designed by Arquitectonica, Olara’s glimmering tower will feature two-to-four-bedroom residences with dens that range from just under 1,500 to over 5,000 square feet. A collection of penthouse homes will include sprawling rooftop decks. All spaces are bright and airy with floor-to-ceiling windows for soaking up the views. “The building is designed as an assemblage of slender vertical volumes, with balconies folding
strategically to imply spinnakers racing to sea,” said Bernardo Fort-Brescia, founding principal of Arquitectonica. “The curved corners are inspired by the flowing lines found in the nautical architecture of yachts and sailboats.”
But what truly sets Olara apart from all the other West Palm Beach condominiums? Unparalleled amenities. On the sixth floor, there will be an 80,000-square-foot waterfront deck, exuding resort-style luxury. Indoor and outdoor experiences include yoga and Pilates studios, a gorgeous gym designed by The Wright Fit, turf lanes, a juice bar, two pools and cabanas. The spa will feature a Japanese onsen, saunas, steam and treatment rooms. And for those still embracing the remote lifestyle, the sixth-floor deck will have stately private and co-working spaces, a waterfront veranda, a library and a multi-media lounge. Taking a dip in the pool after the last zoom call? No one will be the wiser. “The pool is the centerpiece,” added Fort-Brescia. “It is complemented by a second pool deck at the ‘peninsula’ facing the intracoastal.”
On the ground, Olara is set to announce the addition of a famed epicurean market and restaurant, which will take up nearly 30,000 square feet and overlook a private marina. Residents will be able to arrange charters through a private concierge. Currently, Savanna’s team is handpicking the most bespoke brands and services to fill the ground level storefronts, making Olara not just a private oasis for residents, but a lifestyle destination for local Palm Beachers. Prices begin at $2 million, and all sales and marketing efforts are being exclusively handled by Douglas Elliman. According to Alison
Newton, Olara’s director of sales, the reception has been strong and many units in Olara are already under contract. “Today’s buyer wants a luxury lifestyle incorporated into their surroundings,” said Newton. “And Savanna brings those most-wanted amenities, experiences and services to the Palm Beaches.”
And it’s not just out-of-towners who are interested in Olara. Many Palm Beach Island loyalists are looking to downsize and embrace the new luxury condominium lifestyle. They’re excited for this newest and shiniest waterfront toy. Viewing Olara as an extension of Palm Beach Island, Palm Beachers will find it minutes away from their macchiato at Sant Ambroeus, their art exhibit at the Norton or the newest Broadway show at the Kravis Center. Recent sold-out building projects, such as the Bristol and La Clara, served to revolutionize the south stretch of Flagler. Now, Olara will be the first and the most important building to open up the northern Flagler corridor.
“As a longtime Northwood homeowner, I’m really looking forward to the unveiling of Olara’s new restaurant and shops,” said Cecile Katz. “This area just keeps getting better and I know Olara is going to add great value to an already sought-after location.”
West Palm Beach is not just evolving, it’s growing into one of the most unique places to live. The new iconic buildings along Flagler, like the Olara tower, will not only serve as today’s homes, but tomorrow’s artful symbols of a flourishing era.

CAPRI’S FARAONE MENNELLA COMES TO PALM BEACH’S VIA COQUINA
Although Faraone Mennella is one of Capri’s most famed jewelry boutiques, the late namesake designer actually found fame in New York City–not Capri. And like a true Hollywood story, it all began on the set of “Sex & the City.” That’s right, Mennella was discovered by fashion designer and “Sex & the City” wardrobe stylist, Patricia Field, when Carrie Bradshaw was in need of a cameo necklace. It was Mennella’s design that donned Sarah Jessica Parker’s neck in an episode, and that “cameo appearance” would be the beginning of a long-standing collaboration between Mennella and Field. In fact, Field loved donning her plucky protagonists in Faraone Mennella’s Stella earrings, the semi-precious encrusted parabolic hoops that became hotter than a night out with Samantha (played by Kim Cattrall).
Today, Amedeo Scognamiglio, Roberto Faraone Mennella’s long-standing life and business partner, (the duo met in Italy, studied law in Naples and then hightailed it in tandem to NYC), continues the brand’s expansion with a gorgeous new collection. The “Love Lemons” collection draws inspiration from Capri and the famous lemons that the gorgeous island is most known for.
In both Palm Beach and the Hamptons, Faraone Mennella is exclusively available at Via Coquina’s retail locations. In addition, on February 1 through 3, Scognamiglio will visit Via Coquina’s Palm Beach boutique to meet with fans and showcase both his daytime looks and his more bespoke couture pieces. You can also shop the collection online at viacoquina.com.

Whit eld Lovell: Passage
Major National Tour Kicks Off in South Florida at the Boca Raton Museum of Art
The first stop on the national tour of the landmark exhibition “Whitfield Lovell: Passages” is in South Florida at the Boca Raton Museum of Art (February 15 – May 21) and will continue across six states throughout the American South and the Midwest. This is the largest exhibition ever presented of Lovell’s work that focuses on lost African American history and raises universal questions about America’s collective heritage. Organized by the American Federation of Arts (AFA) in collaboration with the artist, the exhibition is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the Terra Foundation for American Art and encompasses the entire first floor galleries of the Boca Raton Museum of Art (7,500 square feet). This is the first time these multi-sensory installations by Lovell are presented together in a museum-wide show of this monumental size and scope.
“These installations create a profound immersive experience that enables visitors to become participants in, not just observers of, the experience of these ancestors who were lost to time,” said Pauline Forlenza, the director and CEO of American Federation of Arts. “Together, these works convey passages between bondage, freedom and socioeconomic independence, promoting a deeper connection with African American histories through art. An exhibition of this magnitude would not be possible without the support of the National Endowment for the Arts, the Terra Foundation for American Art and the six museums selected for this tour.”
Lovell is the recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship Genius Grant and is recognized as one of the world’s leading artistic interpreters of lost African American history. The internationally acclaimed artist is celebrated for his exquisitely hand-drawn portraits (many are life-sized), drawn with Conté crayons from historic photos he finds of anonymous individuals. Then, the artist combines his intuitive assemblage of time-worn objects to raise universal questions about memory, American life and reclaiming lost history that had been erased.
The works in this exhibition are anchored by images of everyday African Americans, from the 1860s to the 1950s (between the Emancipation Proclamation and the start of the Civil Rights Movement), a period of time the artist feels has been overlooked by the art world. “I see the socalled ‘anonymous’ people in these vintage photographs as being stand-ins for the ancestors I will never know,” said Whitfield Lovell. “I see history as being very much alive. One day, 100 years from now, people will be talking about

us as history. The way I think about time is very different – I don’t think it really was very long ago that these things happened, it wasn’t that long ago that my grandmother’s grandmother was a slave.”
“The ancient Native American principles say it takes seven generations to overcome a tragedy, so in this context of generations we can begin to grasp why we are at this point we are living in now,” Lovell added. This passage of time, with its love, loss, despair, danger and freedom, comes to life via Lovell’s otherworldly, ghostly realms –demonstrating ongoing reverberations in our contemporary existence.
Works by Lovell are featured in the permanent collections of major museums, including: the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; the Smithsonian American Art Museum, DC; the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, DC; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, PA; the Yale University Art Gallery; the Hunter Museum of American Art, Chattanooga, TN; The Brooklyn Museum, NY; the Studio Museum in Harlem, NY; Seattle Art Museum, WA and many others.
The accompanying catalog for this national tour, published by Rizzoli Electa, features groundbreaking scholarship and a fresh examination of Lovell’s work with essays by esteemed scholar Bridget R. Cooks and Cheryl Finley. “This is a milestone exhibition, and the Boca Raton Museum of Art is honored to be chosen as the first venue to premiere this national museum tour,” says Irvin Lippman, the executive director of the Boca Raton Museum of Art.
“In our modern-day world, so feverishly focused on ever-decreasing attention spans, the depth of presence we experience when walking through Lovell’s immersive art reminds us that remembering the past is something that matters.” The national tour features important loans from several museums, including the recent acquisition by the Boca Raton Museum of Art of Lovell’s artwork entitled “The Red XIII,” and loans from the Bronx Museum of the Arts; Richmond’s Virginia Museum of Fine Arts; the Mott-Warsh Collection in Flint, Michigan and several private collectors. Several of the loans for this tour were facilitated, and some were directly loaned by New York’s DC Moore Gallery on behalf of the artist.
Investigating the Circularity of Life
Lovell’s interest in spirituality, healing and ritual, together with his use of reclaimed and found objects, aromas, music and sound, has long informed his practice which investigates the circularity of life. “There were not a lot of role models for me as a young Black man wanting to be an artist, a decision I made when I was very young at the age of 13,” said Lovell. “I didn’t have a lot of examples telling me that being an artist was something that I could do. When I came along in the art world, Black people didn’t have gallery representation –we made art because we felt strongly that we had to make art. We found a way to make art.”
Fast-forward to now, one of Oprah Winfrey’s most treasured artworks is Lovell’s tableau entitled
“Having,” which she has kept in her office for decades (the wall-length charcoal image of two African American women features three vintage wood boxes filled with pennies, added by the artist). “These women were early entrepreneurs. I have looked at this every day from my desk for years, to remind me and inspire me that, yes, it can be done,” Oprah Winfrey told the Los Angeles Times about Lovell’s artwork.
Honoring the Memory of their Suffering and Perseverance
Lovell’s hand-drawing virtuosity is rare in today’s world of technologically aided artmaking. The meticulously physical back-and-forth process is how the artist honors the person’s memory and their existence: he applies the charcoal, rubs it with his fingers to get the right tone and then erases some to create the highlights.
“Drawing by hand is always a particular pleasure for me,” said Lovell. “Hand-drawing from the vintage photograph provokes the viewer to look more closely at the subject matter and to contemplate it more.”
By drawing these dignified portraits with grace and humanity, Lovell is honoring the memory of their suffering and perseverance. “The important thing is to make the art good, so that 100 years from now people would want to look at this work. As an artist, you have to find joy in the act of creating,” said Lovell.
Each realistic portrait is inspired by the antique photographs he finds in flea markets, discarded family albums, mug shots and archives. Lovell renders each portrait directly onto old wooden boards with knots, holes, nails, traces of paint and other signs of age. On working with these vintage wood panels, what someone might consider to be a flaw in the found object becomes truly part of the artwork itself. “I’m working with historical images, and the wood itself has history already. The wood comes from old homes, where old souls once inhabited – so I think allowing the wood to have character is very important,” Lovell said. The striations of the wood often come through onto the faces of the unnamed persons.
Lovell then adds found household objects such as clothing, dishes or other mementos onto the wooden panel itself, or on the floor near each portrait. Finally, Lovell chooses a title for the tableau using words or phrases with multiple possible, often contradictory, meanings. He also uses titles of songs, and often incorporates recorded music of early Blues tunes, traditional slave songs, spirituals and gospel music. These tableaux inspire viewers to imagine how each person lived a full life, richly filled with nuances.
“I have avoided making images of famous people, and instead I use found images of so-called ‘anonymous’ people, whose names we don’t know and whose lives we can’t know about because they were erased from history,” said Lovell. “At one time this person walked the earth, spoke and lived and dreamed, just as we are doing today. I look for the humanity that I can find from each of the nameless images I choose to work from.”
