one mann’s opinion

Hi everyone and welcome back to Mann About Town! In this April issue, we have great things lined up. We are bringing you new and exclusive content from a fabulous cover to prestige features.

It’s my pleasure, with the help of my wonderful editor Alex, to have Mr. Martin Shafiroff and Mrs. Jean Shafiroff on our cover for this issue. They are dear friends of mine and it’s been an honor witnessing their name grow in the philanthropic world. Both Martin and Jean have done so much for different organizations and charities, and it’s great to have a chance to share their work with everyone. It was a pleasure to work with them.

This month, we are so proud to bring you Christie’s Corner, a section dedicated to Christie’s International. As a famous and well-respected worldwide company, Christie’s Corner will bring topics on wine, food, travel and much more. We have created a great relationship with them, and they blend perfectly with Mann About Town and our team. The feature, “The Thrill of the Find,” with Senior Vice President and Co-Head of the Trusts, Estates and Appraisals Department Joanna Ostrem, is a great joy to see in our magazine. We are very grateful, as an elite magazine, to team up with Christie’s.

We are also featuring Mount Sinai, a first-class hospital and a team we have a great relationship with. They have grown so special to us and their spread this month on head and neck care is very interesting, as is everything we get from them. With healthcare being extremely important, Mount Sinai is pushing the boundaries and setting the standards in the research they do. I can’t thank them enough for their research, relationships and readers. Their standards are elevating hospitals around the world.

Naturally, we look forward to the Mann Charitable Golf Foundation attended by the who’s who in New York. We get great support from Wall Street to fashion and real estate. The broad support allows us to give back to a great number of charities.

Being the golfer that I am, I will be attending several tournaments throughout May and June, including the National Jewish Health Foundation in both New York and Los Angeles, American Friends of Rabin, the Jewish National Fund and many others to support the Jewish cause and to combat the increase in antisemitism. Mann About Town is included in gift bags across many events and we thank everyone for their support.

Enjoy our April issue of Mann About Town and we look forward to what May has to offer!

“To do anything in this world worth doing, we must not stand back shivering and thinking of the cold and danger, but jump in, and scramble through as well as we can.”
- Sydney Smith

The 63rd Annual Quadrille Ball is Highlight of the New York Winter 2024 Social Season

The 63rd Annual Quadrille Ball, a white-tie charity event took place at 583 Park Avenue in New York City. This unique and exquisite gala showcased once more an elegant night where guests enjoyed a cocktail reception and a three-course dinner followed by dancing and the premier highlight of the evening – the Quadrille performance.

The annual ball is a fundraiser for scholarships awarded to highly qualified students enrolled at U.S. or German universities. The Quadrille was founded decades ago to enhance and strengthen transatlantic relationships through education and exchange. Through its non-profit parent organization, the Germanistic Society of America, the Quadrille supports undergraduate, Master and Ph.D. students.

The stipends awarded by the 501(c)3 non-profit organization offer students the opportunity to study and conduct research across the Atlantic. Scholarship recipients are chosen in cooperation with highly regarded organizations: the Fulbright Program, the Institute of International Education (IIE) and Columbia University. More than 700 students have benefited from the Germanistic Society of America’s support over the years.

The Quadrille is organized by volunteers to ensure that the tax-deductible contributions from sponsors, advertisers, donors and ball guests benefit the stipend fund. This evening is only possible with the hundreds of hours of their time, their skills and boundless positive energy.

This year’s Ball welcomed Guest of Honor Dr. Bernd Scheifele and his wife Dr. Kornelie Schütz-Scheifele in addition to friends including: The Consul General of Germany in New York, Mr. David Gill and his wife Ms. Sheila Shrivastava. The Ball also welcomed the Austrian Consul General Ms. Helene Steinhäusl and her husband Mr. Hubert Heiss, The acting Consul General of France M. Damien Laban and his wife Mme Rebecca Laban, among other guests.

The Quadrille Stipend Fund could not succeed without the continued and generous support of corporate sponsors, individual patrons and other pri-

vate donors. Financial and non-monetary donations help the Germanistic Society of America award its scholarships to outstanding students from the United States and Germany. The Quadrille Ball would like to thank Sponsors including, The Mejean Family Foundation (Full Scholarship Sponsor), Microsoft, The Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Foundation, The Max Kade Foundation and Dr. and Mrs. Andrew Shiva (Platinum Sponsors).

In addition, the Society would like to thank Diamond Sponsors for this year’s Quadrille Ball including: Mrs. Lya and Mr. Joseph Pfeifer and Dr. William Radin as well as Benefactors including Mr. David Detjen, Dr. Barbara and Dr. Karl Elling, Dr. Timothy DeZastro and Freiherr und Freifrau von Arnim.

Notable Attendees included: Dr. Bernd Scheifele (Guest of Honor) and Dr. Kornelie Schütz-Scheifele, Mr. David Gill (Consul General of Germany in NY) and Ms. Sheila Shrivastava, Mr. Damien Laban (Consul General of France in NY) and Rebecca Laban, Ms. Helene Steinhäusl (Consul General of Austria in New York) and Mr. Hubert Heiss, Dr. Barbara Elling (President, Germanistic Society of America), Mrs. Lya Pfeifer (Treasurer, Germanistic Society of America), Ms. Irmintraud J. Empowered Voices, United Hearts Gala for Israel

In a world where silence can feel deafening, where darkness threatens to overshadow hope, there shines a beacon of unity, strength and unwavering commitment.

This beacon, known as the Empowered Voices, United Hearts Gala for Israel, brought together 1,000 women from across the globe, hailing from New York, London, Florida, Israel, Brazil and South Africa, to stand united for Israel and combat antisemitism.

Hosted amidst the glimmering lights of the city skyline at the premier venue, The Glasshouse, the gala was a night of magic and purpose. With delectable food, enchanting music and the setting sun casting a golden glow, the stage was set for an evening of deep impact.

Sarah Rotenstreich, the founder of Batsheva, the organization behind the gala, shared her thoughts on the importance of unity and empowerment within the Jewish community. “Our commitment to guiding women towards leadership roles, driven by Jewish values of compassion, resilience and solidarity, is at the heart of our mission,” she remarked.

As the night unfolded, conversations flowed freely, ideas were exchanged and bonds were strengthened. Women from diverse backgrounds and experiences came together, united by their shared commitment to Israel and their determination to combat antisemitism.

“The urgency of Jewish pride and unity has never been clearer, particularly in the wake of recent events,” said Rotenstreich. “However, amidst the darkness, there is hope. Women are the catalyst for change and transformation. Tonight, as we stand united for Israel and our Jewish nation, we celebrate the unwavering moral focus, courageous voice and deep commitment exemplified by our group of honorees. These remarkable women have shown unparalleled strength and integrity, choosing right over popular, truth over false narratives. They have not only stood up but stood proud, inspiring us all with their unwavering determination and resolve.”

Indeed, the Empowered Voices, United Hearts Gala was more than just a glamorous event— it was a testament to the power of unity, the strength of community and the impact of one more act of goodness and kindness. As we con-

tinue our journey forward, let us carry the light of hope, the fire of determination and the spirit of unity in our hearts, knowing that together, we can overcome any challenge. For more information about Batsheva and their mission, visit www.batsheva.tv or follow @batshevawomen on social media.

“THE NOTEBOOK”

Makes its Debut on Broadway

“The Notebook” is based on the 1996 novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks. The 2004 movie was directed by Nick Cassavetes, from a screenplay by Jeremy Leven and Jan Sardi. In its current Broadway production, the book is by Bekah Brunstetter and the music and lyrics are by Ingrid Michaelson.

The musical has two directors: four-time Tony nominee Michael Greif and Schele Williams who is making a Broadway debut. Williams is also going to be directing the highly anticipated “The Wiz” which is opening in April.

In the current musical we get three versions of Noah and Allie... younger, middle and older. For the most part, the six are good; I thought that the younger Allie (Jordan Tyson) was woefully miscast. Allie came from money and was a proper girl, but this younger Allie conveyed none of that. More like an inner-city persona, Tyson was just not believable.

The urban oasis Equinox Hotel New York has reopened with enhanced safety measures for both guests and staff. Equinox Hotels has coupled the strictest hygiene and cleaning standards in the industry with a tailored approach to well-being. This holistic method delivers a personalized experience for guests, especially as it pertains to health, service and safety.

In Brett J. Banaki’s gorgeous set design, we get a wonderful slide movement throughout the two hours and fi fteen minutes. Equally as effective is the sound by Nevin Steinberg and the costumes by Paloma Young.

The effective orange and blue lighting by Ben Stanton too made the mood well in tune with the plot. The musical for the most part was very similar to the movie, two young people fall deeply in love with one another and even though ten years have gone by, they never stop thinking of each other. The key to the musical’s success is that the three different sets of Noah and Allie need to all be effective. While Maryann Plunkett as the elder and Dorian Harewood as the husband are excellent, we get the best interaction between Joy Woods and Ryan Vasquez, the middle-aged actors; their singing and body language are captivating. The two are silky smooth on stage. Even though John Cardoza holds up his end as the younger Noah, it is Tyson who is an anchor around his neck. Even though Tyson has a very good singing voice, her Broadway debut falls fl at.

The two opening scenes, both the fi rst act and second act fi re on all cylinders. It is the second act, however, where this show excels. The songs, the pace and the story all come together nicely. Songs like “We Have to Try,” “Forever,” “It’s Not Easy,” “I Know” and “Coda” were all well-sung; the lyrics were catchy and fit the moment of the plot. The fi rst act too had some nice songs: “Time,” “Leave the Light On,” and “If This is Love” were most memorable. Having some great moments in the fi rst act, it still didn’t compare to the afternoon’s second act.

MVVO ART: THE DIGITAL ART SHOW CONTINUES

While the Ad Art Show at the Oculus in the Westfield World Trade Center is over, the show continues; the art is for sale on the MvVO Art Artsy gallery. The Ad Art Show 2020 was an innovative, all-digital contemporary art show

featuring paintings, photography, sculptures and mixed media installations by artists in the advertising industry. The show included artworks by 135 contemporary artists on the 22 screens of the Oculus. mvvoart.com

GABRIELA GIL

For the romantics out there, “The Notebook” is for the most part an entertaining show. The choreography (Katie Spelman) is underwhelming, as is some of the ensemble cast. Allie’s parents, Andrea Burns and Charles E. Wallace, are not moving in their parts. Burns was much more effective in her role as nurse Lori. Neither actor brought depth and as parents to Allie, they were mostly robotic and aloof.

Artist Gabriela Gil connects elements of the immediate present through the use of line, color and rhythm. This combination in her painting reflects an admiration for both nature’s softness and the human instinct to connect.

DOMENICO VACCA

Born in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, Gil has moved throughout South and North America her entire life. The constant migration has shaped her multicultural perspective and nurtured her interest in art as a way to transcribe her personal experience using a unique visual language. The Calcium Skin Care Craze

36 MANN ABOUT TOWN • APRIL 2024 BEAUTY & SKINCARE
Photos courtesy of Peter Thomas Roth

As the popularity of vitamin and mineral supplements for the body has increased, so has interest in vitamins and minerals for the skin. One of the most sought-after minerals for topical application is calcium. While this mineral is well-known for its positive impact on bone health, it also plays an important role in the look of skin health.

Calcium is naturally found in the skin and helps with skin barrier function and cell turnover. However, as we age, the cell renewal process slows down, resulting in the look of dry, saggy and crepey skin. Incorporating calcium into your skin care routine helps to fi ght the effects of aging and restore the look of fi rmness and elasticity.

To fi nd out more about this trending ingredient, we caught up with skin care guru Peter Thomas Roth. An influential segment leader in the beauty industry, Roth is known for creating clinically stronger formulas and leads all research and development efforts at his state-of-the-art lab and manufacturing facility.

The newest innovations to emerge from Roth’s lab are Un-Crepe™ Face & Neck Moisturizer and Un-Crepe™ Body Cream. These QVC® exclusive products each have calcium as a key ingredient. Here, Roth talks about the science behind his breakthrough formulas and how they help his customers achieve the look of younger, “un-creped” skin.

Why did you choose to formulate your Un-Crepe™ products with calcium?

I try to eat healthy and always do some kind of exercise, whether it’s going to the gym, walking, running or just moving. Over the years, calcium has become an important part of my diet for strong bones and overall health. What’s amazing is that calcium not only helps to keep the body in top condition, but the skin too! My goal in creating Un-Crepe™ was to bring the previously untapped anti-aging benefits of calcium to my customers and give them fabulous results.

Tell us about the calcium in your Un-Crepe™ products. The calcium in my Un-Crepe™ products isn’t your ordinary calcium. My chemists and I researched ingredients from all over the world and discovered an unprecedented synergistic complex of calcium and essential amino acids. You’ll see this ingredient on the product packaging as Clini-CAL Plus™ and it’s clinically engineered to visibly help reduce the look of crepiness, loss of fi rmness and elasticity, fi ne lines and wrinkles…Brilliant!

Anything else we should know about Un-Crepe™?

For an extra boost of calcium, my buttery soft Un-Crepe™ creams also have a calcium-fortified, dairy-free plant milk complex of sweet almond, rice and vanilla milks. Together with superfruit oils, avocado and shea butter, these ingredients help to replenish the look of moisture and leave skin feeling smooth, supple and youthful.

Besides using calcium-fortified skin care, any other tips for achieving younger-looking skin?

The most important thing with any skin care routine is to be consistent! While you may notice an immediate effect, skin care works better over time and with continued use. When it comes to achieving younger-looking skin, moisturizer is particularly important because it helps keep your skin appearing supple and plump with moisture. My Un-Crepe™ creams are perfect for helping to improve and maintain the look of youthful skin! Go to QVC.com to grab a jar and see the results for yourself. You’re going to look gorgeous!

THE ALDERMAN

Renwick Hospitality Group Opens Its Seventh NYC Restaurant, The Alderman, in the Heart of Times Square

An Ode to the New York City Renaissance, The Alderman Embraces the Gamor of Elevated Classic Fare and Modern Fancies

The Alderman, a new American restaurant celebrating the vintage glamor of New York’s Gilded Age era, debuts inside the Motto by Hilton New York City Times Square. Conceptualized and brought to life by Renwick Hospitality Group, led by Chef Carsten Johannsen and Chef Gary Wallach, this opening marks the seventh property in Renwick’s expanding New York City portfolio. With a nod to the city’s illustrious renaissance, The Alderman beckons patrons to slip away into the realm of classic enchantment and contemporary indulgence.

Named in tribute to the New York City Board of Aldermen, who bestowed the moniker “Times Square” upon the iconic locale in the early 1900s, The Alderman encapsulates the essence of the city’s rich history and enduring legacy as a melting pot of people, ideas and cultures.

“We are thrilled to unveil The Alderman, a sophisticated sanctuary that pays homage to the timeless allure of the city,” said Founding Partner of Renwick Hospitality Group, Gary Wallach. “As a New Yorker, I wanted to create a space that blends classic sophistication with modern fl air to captivate locals and visitors alike. Leveraging the mystique of Times Square and the iconic pulse of the city, we hope to inspire guests through their taste buds; taking them back in time - but through a modern culinary lens.”

The Menu

The Alderman will offer “a sign of good times” through its breakfast, lunch and dinner menus carefully crafted by Johannsen and Executive Chef Steven Hubbell. Much like the melting pot of New York City, menus are a blend of fl avors from close to home and afar while emphasizing sustainability, zero waste and fresh, seasonal and ethically sourced ingredients.

“The menu is meant to evoke a sense of comforting nostalgia with each bite,” says Chef-Owner and Founding Partner of Renwick Hospitality Group, Carsten Johannsen. “There is a variety of American classics on the menu, but with an added modern twist - whether that be an unexpected spice, a non-traditional presentation or a newfound cooking approach. The goal is to create an unforgettable dining experience that leaves patrons hooked, intrigued and curious for more - much like the timeless allure of the Gilded Age itself.” Standout menu items include:

• Grilled Sunchokes with sweet onion puree, cumin and parsley.

• Wild Blue Catfi sh with black pepper fried, rosemary butter sauce and hand-cut noodles.

• Crispy Piggy with red chili fermented cabbage and carrot puree.

• Roast Normandy Duck with juniper glaze, parsnip gratin and candied citrus reduction.

• Stinging Nettle with Dumpling fennel braised with black trumpet mushrooms, nutmeg and dried orange.

• Grande Plateau curated a raw-bar selection of 12 oysters, four razor clams, four shrimp, four mussels, four crab claws, two smoked scallops and daily tartare.

42 MANN ABOUT TOWN • APRIL 2024 ON THE TABLE

The Beverage Program

Drawing inspiration from the 1900s Harry Johnson’s Bartender Manual, Gary Wallach curated the cocktail menu to offer a modern take on classic sips, both known and unknown. The luxurious tastes and gilded decadence of the New York Renaissance heavily inspired the beverage program which features cocktails such as:

• Torched Pineapple Fix with Woodford Reserve rye whiskey, Faccia Brutto Centerbe, torched pineapple, vanilla, honey, lime and herb oil.

• Fennel Seed Martini with Belvedere vodka, Martini & Rossi Bianco, fennel seed, orange liqueur and sage tincture.

• 48th Street Highball with Del Maguey Vida Mezcal, serrano pepper, grapefruit, rose hip, lime and prosecco rosé.

The Team

Chef Carsten Johannsen and Gary Wallach began their careers with humble backgrounds. Johannsen started dishwashing in his early years and Wallach worked bar prep to gain experience. Their less-than-glamorous beginnings taught them essential fundamentals, igniting an unbreakable passion and love for the hospitality industry.

Carsten went on to gain fi ne-dining experience in Washington D.C. in the early aughts before joining the Mandarin Oriental Hotel fl agship in New York City. Afterward, he led the culinary team at the beloved Commerce Restaurant in New York. In 2016, Johannsen became the executive chef at the Arlo SoHo.

Gary, a native New Yorker, has helmed well-known bars such as the Mondrian Soho’s Isola and Sushi Roxx. Afterward, he was the bar manager of Cecconi’s Dumbo, the fi rst public restaurant from the famed Soho House. In 2018, Wallach joined the Arlo SoHo team as the food and beverage director.

Joining the team is Executive Chef Steven Hubbell, an award-winning culinary artist with an affi nity for humble ingredients, who blends his passion for seasonal and ethically sourced American cuisine with influences from the spice trail. Bringing his experience from the Michelin-starred Junoon and Veeraswamy, Hubbell’s approach to his work is a blend of culinary innovation and resourceful creativity, transforming often overlooked ingredients into delightful dishes. As a dedicated no-waste chef, he weaves sustainability into his culinary projects, ensuring that every element serves a purpose. aldermannyc.com

For 26 years, Chola has held its place among the chic design shops and upscale dining destinations of the Upper East Side, earning accolades from The New York Times (two-star review) and Michelin Guide. Shiva Natarajan, the visionary behind this culinary gem, pioneered the Indian dining landscape in New York City with establishments like Dhaba, Chote Nawab and Malai Marke, extending his influence into several top restaurants in Westchester, NY and Connecticut. Despite his extensive ventures, Shiva’s heart remains with his crown jewel, Chola, now entrusted to his protégé and current owner, Min Bhujel. Shiva’s dedication to culinary excellence endures as he actively participates in menu development, traversing India to uncover and share original recipes beloved by billions. The success of Chola is anchored in Shiva’s dedication to preserving traditional Indian culinary practices in each recipe, a labor of love that starts in the kitchen. Every detail is meticulously attended to, from mixing and roasting spice blends to creating chutneys, regional sauces and housemade ghee, each forming a symphony of authentic flavors using outstanding ingredients. Another reason for Chola’s success is the personalized service offered by Min Bhujel and his team, who embrace the quintessential Indian value of “Atithi Devo Bhava,” meaning, “the guest is God.”

Most recently, Shiva appeared on Martha Stewart’s Roku special, “Martha Cooks,” where he offered his expertise on how to cook some of her favorites like Butter Chicken, Okra, Lemon Rice and Raita Yogurt. He is currently writing a cookbook to consolidate his vast knowledge and experience of Indian cuisine, traveling around the country to uncover local recipes.

Some of Chola’s newly developed menu items appear throughout the menu. Starters: Puchkawala Alu Dum, spiced tamarind potatoes from the streets of Kolkata; Kodi Vepudu, chicken sautéed with peppercorn-based spices and curry leaf, from Andhra; Baghari Jhinga, creamy mustard shrimp from Kashmir; Mangalorean Meen Fry, a dish originating from the coastal area of Mangalore, prepared with choice of pan-seared branzino or salmon; Sweet Potato Bhartha, mashed and tempered with mustard seeds, coconut and curry leaf.

For the entrees: Katrika Tomato Curry, stir-fried eggplant, dry lentils, house blend sambhar powder; Avial, a coconut-vegetable dish from Kerala; Bhoger Khichuri, a delicious one pot meal of rice, moong lentil and vegetables from Durga Pooja festivals of Kolkota.

Signature meat dishes: Nihari, a famous goat stew preparation from Northern India, made with wheat flour, which gives the dish a thick and creamy texture; Mirapakaya Kozhi, an Andhra-style dry coconut chicken; Lata Shetty’s Lobster Ghee Roast, a family recipe from Shiva’s mother-in-law with tamarind, coconut and onions; Meen Polichattu, pan-seared fish in a banana leaf.

Rice and Biryani standouts include Misti Rice, a delicacy from Kolkata that features sweet rice, cashews, raisins and ghee; Mughlai Goat Biryani, a highly aromatic specialty with Basmati rice, whole spices, yogurt and herbs served in a clay pot. Also available is a selection of traditional and garlic naan.

Dessert showcases Kulfi, a condensed milk and saffron ice cream; Misti Dohi, a fermented sweetened yogurt from Kolkata; and Coconut Barfi, coconut squares with cardamom.

The Cocktail selection has been curated by Allen Katz, owner of the New York Distilling Company. Highlights of the cocktail program include, Himalayan Sunset, Spring 44 vodka, King’s Ginger liqueur, mango puree and fresh lime juice, East of Manhattan, Ragtime rye, La Copa sweet vermouth and saffron syrup. The restaurant also offers a well-curated international wine list, which can be enjoyed by the glass or bottle and pairs well with Indian cuisine. Additionally, there is an excellent selection

of Indian beers such as Taj Mahal and Kingfisher and non-alcoholic beverages like Mango, Sweet, and Salt Lassi.

Chola’s iconic vintage clock defines the restaurant’s entrance and sets the tone for the authentic experience that awaits within. The front room boasts a spacious bar adorned with golden hanging pendants, creating a warm and inviting ambiance. The dining room features marbled walls offset with gray banquettes lining the perimeter. Black and white photographs feature coastal scenes from Southern India to share the landscape behind the cuisine. A mix of modern and traditional accents can be found throughout the restaurant, paying homage to the vibrant tapestry of Indian culture.

“ My philanthropic work is a major part of who I am. Philanthropy and my family are my top priorities.”

JeanShafiroff and Martin Shafiroff are best known in philanthropic circles for their humility and graciousness. This hard-working couple is not only generous but also unassuming, honest and kind. Jean Shafiroff is often referred to as the First Lady of Philanthropy by the international press because of her outstanding leadership, work ethic and generosity in the philanthropic world. She serves on many charity boards, hosts a TV show on philanthropy and is the author of the book, “Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life By What You Give.”

Martin Shafiroff, a top international investment advisor for decades, feels the same way about philanthropy as his wife does and is a strong supporter of the family’s work in this arena. Together, the New York couple, are a dynamic force.

The couple’s story is one of generational giving. Their parents were involved in philanthropy in their own way and served as role models. Martin and Jean Shafiroff’s two daughters are also involved with philanthropic work; the older daughter does extensive volunteer work in Kenya helping disabled orphans for months at a time. Their youngest daughter is the co-founder and president of Global Strays, an international animal welfare organization.

“We are proud of our daughters and the work they do. We wholeheartedly support all they do in the philanthropic world,” Jean said.

Martin Shafiroff is the Vice Chairman of Global Wealth Management at Stifel, a full-service brokerage and investment banking firm. He has a long history on Wall Street as a leading international figure in finance, writing a book in 1982, called “Successful Telephone Selling in the 80’s,” which had a re-edition released in 1990, “Successful Telephone Selling in the 90’s.” The book is a best seller and has become a respected sales bible for sales professionals across the country and beyond.

Mr. Shafiroff is a go-to figure for guidance on investments for the world’s leading institutions and individuals, starting out in the 1970s as a partner of the Lehman Brothers, then ranking Number One on Barron Magazine’s Top 100 Wealth Advisors list in 2004. He then founded the Shafiroff Group, and in 2008, the Martin Shafiroff Group joined Barclays Wealth and Investment Management, Americas, which Stifel acquired in 2015. He now leads a top international investment team known for their honesty and top financial results. He is a longstanding member of the board of directors of Baruch College.

Jean Shafiroff first got involved in philanthropy during her childhood and has continued it for decades. She is a sought-after leader in philanthropy and chairs upwards of eight to ten charity galas each year. In addition, each year she hosts and underwrites at least a dozen large-scale cocktail parties for different charities in her New York homes and elsewhere. Her book, “Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life By What You Give,” with an introduction by Georgina Bloomberg, is highly regarded by philanthropic experts as well as young aspiring philanthropists. Jean’s four areas of focus are women’s rights, the rights of underserved populations, health care and animal welfare. In addition, she supports many other chairty groups, including those that suport the arts and those that work to end discrimination.

Her TV show, “Successful Philanthropy,” which airs six times each week in the Hamptons is also highly regarded. She interviews politicians, celebrities, business leaders and philanthropic leaders, and has even interviewed a US presidential candidate.

Jean serves on several boards of charitable organizations, including the Southampton Hospital Association, Mission Society of NYC, Couture Council of the Museum at FIT, French Heritage Society, Casita Maria, the New York Women’s Foundation, Global Strays and the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation honorary board. As a Catholic, she has served on The Jewish Board, a large mental health service charity, for 28 years and now is one of their honorary trustees. The Board serves 50% of a non-Jewish population.

Jean served as the national spokesperson for the American Humane’s “Feed the Hungry” COVID-19 program, an initiative that raised $1,000,000 to provide food for over 1,000,000 animals living in 109 different shelters

across the United States.

Jean has been honored many times by groups including American Humane, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, Mission Society of NYC, French Heritage Society, Southampton Animal Shelter, Surgeons of Hope, Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation, Operation Warrior Shield, Viennese Opera Ball and Al Sharpton’s National Action Network. She also has been honored by the Ellen Hermanson Foundation, Dominican Women’s Development Center, Fashion for Development, New York State’s Assemblywoman Rebecca Seawright’s Women’s Leadership Awards, She Exist Magazine, Pet Philanthropy Circle, Animal Zone International, Health Advocates for Older People, Southampton African American Museum, Women’s eNews, Youth Counseling League, the NYC International Film Festival Foundation, The Jewish Board and Hadassah.

In December 2020 and then in March 2024, “Dan’s Papers” named Jean Shafiroff as “Philanthropist of the Year” at its Power Event on the Eastern End of Long Island and then at their Palm Beach Florida Award’s ceremony, respectively. Dan’s Paper has honored Jean Shafiroff many other times for her philanthropic work.

In September 2022 she was officially proclaimed the “First Lady of Philanthropy of New York” by New York State Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright, who represents the New York State Assembly and New York’s

76th District, in Manhattan. In November 2022, the 117th US Congress recognized Jean for her work in philanthropy, given by US Representative Carolyn Maloney who represented the 14th Congressional District in New York. She has also received many citations from the NYS Assembly for her philanthropic leadership.

In 2024, Jean became a member of The Global Mental Health Task Force to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #3.

Jean has a BS in physical therapy from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University and an MBA in finance from the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University. As a physical therapist, Shafiroff worked at St. Luke’s Hospital, an inner-city hospital, where many patients lived below the poverty level. After obtaining her MBA in finance, Jean went on to become an investment banker on Wall Street for a short time before getting married. She decided to step back from her Wall Street career and become a full-time mother after her first daughter was born. Gradually she became very involved in philanthropic work.

“We did not go out to charity galas like we do now,” Jean said. “I had to be home with our children, helping with homework and projects, giving them support. A good mother has to be there. Education and good values were top priorities of our family.” Their oldest daughter has an MS in Social Work from NYU and an undergraduate degree from Tufts University and spends much time doing volunteer work in Kenya. Their younger daughter is a graduate of Baruch College and the International Center of Photography

(ICP). She worked as a photojournalist for a short time and then got very involved in animal welfare, being co-founder and president of Global Strays. “My philanthropic work is a major part of who I am. Philanthropy and my family are my top priorities,” Jean said.

“In my book, I have a chapter about the importance of teaching philanthropy at a young age, not just at home, but in schools and religious institutions,” Jean said. “Philanthropy is learned. Good role models are needed, too.”

When speaking about her book, Jean stated, “The whole premise of my book is that anyone can be a philanthropist. If you do not have the resources to give, you can give your time and knowledge, but those who can give financially, have an obligation to give. Without volunteers or funding, charities can not go on. Volunteer fundraising is vitally important and I have done a great deal of it.”

When it comes to her marriage, there is much that Jean Shafiroff admires most about her husband. “His first priority is family and work,” she said. “He is a real family man, I also respect his business ethics, he is very honest.”

She explained that “The ingredients of success are hard work, honesty, integrity and being a good person.” Regarding marriage, Jean says it’s about intent and effort. “You have to work at it, you have to want the marriage to work,” she said. “You have to love and support one another.”

Another immersive sound experience is the Sound Healing Bath, which takes place in the spa’s outdoor Water Garden. Profoundly healing and nurturing, water therapies provide an elemental reconnection to human life. During this 45-minute bathing ritual, Himalayan singing bowls are placed on the water creating ripples of vibration through the body, activating the healing response of the central nervous system, balancing neurotransmitters and bringing the mind and body into a deep state of relaxation.

Other onsite sound therapies incorporate ocean drums, rain sticks, gongs, chimes, standing bowls and rituals using Florida’s native flowers. Guests can also book sessions in Harmonic Wellness Loungers, zero-gravity chairs positioned for accelerated restoration aimed at reducing stress and anxiety by relaxing the parasympathetic nervous system with quantum harmonic sound waves.

Going back in Time

Aspen

Revisiting Aspen after a twenty-year void to attend the second annual Aspen Snow Ball Gala - Through the Looking Glass benefitting pediatric cancer brought back many memories. My return had me quickly notice that not much had changed, the vibe and energy were so familiar. There is a special spot called The Little Nell, Aspen’s only Five-Diamond, Five-Star ski-in / ski-out resort where luxury is their middle name. With lighter snow than normal, I switched up my trip focusing on philanthropy, time outdoors and visiting with old friends. The Little Nell provided the perfect property to connect with me, remember fond times and appreciate a different aspect of this mountain town.

Feeling sexy walking in the door, with a new plan in store, I took every opportunity to immerse in Aspen old and new; dining, luxuriating and shopping as only Aspen and The Little Nell can deliver. Nothing was left unattended from the wonderful spa menu to luggage storage and restaurants. It was a very intimate experience; the concierge there allowed me to partake in the spa throughout the day. Daily afternoon time for restorative enjoyment was exactly what was needed. The hybrid infrared/halo-therapy sauna and steam rooms, and massage table naps were some of my favorites.

As I arrived on the Saturday of the gala with my outfit for the evening festivities, it was so nice to have an inviting venue to easily transition from day to evening.

The team at The Little Nell shared some unique elements of the property, “Newly renovated and designed by Luis Bustamante Interior Design, The Spa features three treatment suites, each containing a private changing room with a steam shower - two of which also have a hybrid infrared/ halo-therapy sauna and resting area. A separate guest changing area serves as a departure suite. Our treatment menu provides an integrated approach to wellness that revolves around three therapeutic pathways highly attuned to the Aspen lifestyle, with targeted remedies for the high-altitude environment, active adventure and high-performance living,” said the teams website. I recommend perusing their spa menu fi lled with restorative treatments and the use of quality brands.

Reflecting on the Aspen of two decades ago, I recalled walking through the doors and noting the glamor and familiar faces of Sean Connery and Michael Jordan. Celebrity sightings are a common thing here. Staying with friends some 40 minutes from town with the reality of little snow this time around, hitting the slopes, the prime winter activity in Aspen, was replaced with snowshoeing and hiking.

My last full day in town was relaxing, as I left completely moisturized from The Little Nell’s spa, I scampered off just as the snow began to fall. A fi nal delicious meal was in store, eager to enjoy Casa Tua’s famous margarita and divine Ora King Salmon with Lentils and Spinach. The quality of food and beautiful atmosphere offered by this well-known restaurant was the perfect end to the day and trip. Times like these remind me of the simple elements of health and well-being, fueling our mind, body and spirit with healthy food, self-care treatments, fresh air and picturesque surroundings.

At Mount Sinai, Eric M. Genden, MD, Pushes the Boundaries of What Is Possible in Head and Neck Care

Every day, Mount Sinai’s Eric M. Genden, MD, MHA, meets patients with oral cancer or related complications who have been told that nothing can be done to help them. These are the patients Dr. Genden, the Isidore Friesner chair and professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, is most passionate about.

“When I am confronted with a struggling patient who has been turned away, I think of it as an opportunity to innovate—to find creative ways to treat their disease in a way that preserves vital functions like swallowing or speech,” says Dr. Genden, a world leader in his field. “When we do that, we can positively change their lives.”

This commitment to creativity informs everything Dr. Genden does at Mount Sinai. He is recognized as the first surgeon to perform a successful human trachea transplant. That achievement, in 2021, led to the launch of the Institute for Airway Sciences at Mount Sinai to advance new therapies for patients with sinus, laryngotracheal airway and lung diseases. He was also the first to perform a successful jaw transplant using a donor jaw and the patient’s marrow.

Dr. Genden, senior associate dean for Clinical Affairs, and professor of Neurosurgery and Immunology at Icahn Mount Sinai, has gained international recognition as a leader and innovator in the management of oropharyngeal cancers and microvascular reconstruction of the head and neck. He is also director of Mount Sinai’s Head and Neck Institute-Center of Excellence for Head and Neck Cancer, building a surgical team

that treats more head and neck oncology patients than any other hospital system in New York. The Mount Sinai Hospital is nationally ranked for Ear, Nose and Throat by “U.S. News and World Report®.” Dr. Genden says these achievements reflect both his and Mount Sinai’s commitment to innovation.

“This is a place where people are interested in pushing the boundaries of what is possible,” he says. “That culture feeds on itself, because it attracts others who want to be progressive in solving problems instead of doing business as usual.”

Under Dr. Genden’s leadership, the department has developed signature initiatives, all centered on advancing patient care:

Pioneering Transoral Robotic Surgery

Dr. Genden performed the first transoral robotic surgery (TORS) in New York in 2008. Since then, Mount Sinai has built its pioneering TORS program into the largest in the country. This minimally invasive procedure allows surgeons to remove tumors and any affected lymph nodes through the mouth, precisely targeting tumors in the back of the throat, tonsils and base of the tongue. Patients who undergo TORS recover faster, spend less time in the hospital and have better cosmetic and functional outcomes. They are also more likely to retain speech and swallowing functions than with open surgery.

APRIL 2024 • MANN ABOUT TOWN 69 HEALTHCARE

“In the past, these tumors presented a significant challenge to reach, and traditionally were removed by surgeons through a large facial incision,” Dr. Genden notes. “However, the advent of robotic technology brought about a paradigm shift in the removal of tumors and the benefits it delivers to patients.”

Developing the “Liquid Biopsy”

Faced with patients who present with telltale signs of human papillomavirus (HPV) associated head and neck cancer, Mount Sinai is using a new technology, “liquid biopsy,” for diagnosis and treatment, in addition to standard tools. This blood assay—which Mount Sinai has been testing since 2020 with its developer, Naveris—can detect circulating tumor

tissue-modified viral HPV DNA. “With a simple blood draw, we can confirm our suspicions of HPV-associated disease, which is invaluable given the current HPV epidemic we are experiencing,” Dr. Genden says.

The tool also helps physicians make more informed treatment decisions. “In some cases, we can spare patients radiation or chemotherapy after robotic surgery based on the liquid biopsy results we see, putting that in our back pocket for when we really need it,” he explains. “That ability to treat patients based on the presence of disease and not a protocol has changed what we can do for them in a dramatic way.”

Leading Treatment of HPV-Associated Throat Cancer

Cases of oral and oropharyngeal (back of the throat, base of the tongue, tonsils and soft palate) cancer have been rising nationwide, especially among men ages 35 to 55. Traditionally, most cases of oral cancer stemmed from smoking and drinking. Today, about 70 percent of these cancer cases are caused by HPV. Mount Sinai treats more HPV-associated oral and oropharyngeal cancers than any other facility in New York City, with an outstanding 85 percent cure rate.

Dr. Genden and his team are looking at the potential of using artificial intelligence to reach an even higher rate by identifying mutations in tumors that could be targeted with therapies, as well as gaining more insight into which patients are more likely to respond to particular treatments. They are also exploring the role of the microbiome in the development of cancer to see whether changes in nutrition could reduce the risk of this disease.

Dr. Genden almost forged a different path in his life. He first enrolled at Columbia University, where he majored in economics with plans to become an economist, until a biology course inspired second thoughts. “I did not do particularly well in that course,” he admits. “But I was fascinated by it, so I had a decision to make, ‘Do I pursue something I love, even if it is more challenging, or do I pursue something that comes easily to me?’ Ultimately, I chose my passion.”

After enrolling at Rockefeller University to earn a Ph.D. in molecular biology, he realized that while he enjoyed research, he was motivated to care for patients and joined what was then the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

Following a head and neck residency at Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Dr. Genden returned to Mount Sinai for a fellowship in head and neck oncology and microvascular reconstructive surgery and has remained at Mount Sinai ever since, rising to chair of his department in 2004. Today, he leads a dedicated faculty that is preparing a new generation to approach oral cancer in creative ways. This includes an innovative program that will weave together surgical and research training. “We want to develop surgeon-scientists who are dedicated to researching innovative approaches to disease and transferring these innovations to patient care,” he explains. “That ability to move between those two realms is how you push care forward.”

When Dr. Genden is not pushing care forward, he rekindles his passion for competitive rowing. He says the discipline, physicality and concentration required to excel in the sport are akin to those required in performing microvascular surgery. He also spends time with his wife of 25 years and his three children, two of whom have expressed an interest in medicine. As much as that delights him, Dr. Genden hopes they will forge their own paths, just as he has forged his.

“If you find what you love, you will love what you do,” Dr. Genden says. “That is the guiding light. And when you do that, you will see great accomplishments.”

Brugal Unveils

Unveils

First Ever Permanent Edition Prestige

Sipping Rum

Maestro Reserva is an ode to Brugal’s unwavering mastery and pursuit of excellence. Crafted by Maestra Ronera using Brugal’s Proprietary Cask Toasting Technique “Dark Aromatic Toasting,” it creates an exceptional sipping rum designed to mark the moment.

Born from the passion of five generations of Maestros Roneros and 135 years of rum mastery, the Dominican ultra-premium rum brand, Brugal, unveiled its newest masterpiece: a permanent edition prestige sipping rum, Maestro Reserva. This permanent luxury rum embodies Brugal’s unwavering mastery and pursuit of excellence. The process for Maestro Reserva utilizes an innovative cask toasting technique – completely unique to and developed by Brugal – in prestigious American sherry oak casks called “Dark Aromatic Toasting” to create a one-of-a-kind rum, carefully crafted for sipping.

Driven by passion, each generation of the Brugal family and Maestro Roneros enriches the art of rum making and leaves behind a legacy that endures through the ages. Brugal family member and fi fth-generation Maestra Ronera, Jassil Villanueva Quintana, upholds this as she introduces her legacy, Quintana. Using the “Dark Aromatic Toasting” technique, Quintana has produced a rum born from years of practice and patience, passed down from generation to generation. With her expertise, she discerns the precise moment when the rum’s elements reach perfection, resulting in a liquid characterized by a naturally smooth, well-rounded and intricate sweetness.

“My family deeply embraces the elegance and soul of Brugal rum, and I’ve absorbed a wealth of wisdom from the generations of Maestro Roneros who came before me,” shared Quintana. “By leveraging this

knowledge and my unwavering passion, all while paying homage to the Brugal family legacy, I’ve crafted a rum that is ‘moment perfect.’ My hope is that Maestro Reserva graces all of life’s big celebrations, alongside cherished ones, forging moments that will endure for centu-

ries to come.”

Brugal’s Brugal’s

At $200 per bottle, every sip is a tribute to the dedication and skill of Brugal’s Maestro Roneros, both past and present.

Brugal’s proprietary “Dark Aromatic Toasting” process naturally sweetens the liquid to create a rum free of external sugars and additives. After aging in premium American sherry oak casks, the rum is emptied and carefully placed aside. The American sherry oak casks are immediately toasted using precision, mastery and expertise to extract natural caramel pearls drawn from the wood’s sugars. The casks are then re-fi lled with the rum, absorbing the delicate caramel pearls created in the wood before being carefully aged under the Dominican sun. The result is a smooth and rich liquid defi ned by sweet vanilla creaminess, velvety caramel and awakened by a hint of smoke.

Once complete, Maestro Reserva is a prestige sipping rum with natural caramel hues, best enjoyed neat or over ice. On the nose, the rum is oaky and presents red fruits with a hint of smoke balanced by caramel and honey. On the palate, fl avors of vanilla and caramel emerge, giving way to subtle notes of dark chocolate and dried fruits with a hint of toasted nuts and orange peel. Maestro Reserva is presented in a beautiful bespoke glass decanter. In support of the brand’s focus on sustainability, the secondary packaging for Maestro Reserva is eco-friendly and fully recyclable.

The Thrill of the Find

Christie’s Joanna Ostrem Brings World-Class Estates to Auction

Joanna Ostrem has the kind of job where the telephone rings and suddenly you’re off on an adventure. “I love getting that call,” said Ostrem, who is a Senior Vice President and the Co-Head of the Trusts, Estates and Appraisals Department at Christie’s auction house. “I love hearing that we are about to work with a new collection and begin the process of learning all we can, and one day bringing that collection to the saleroom.”

Christie’s was founded in London in 1766 by a Scotsman named James Christie. Some 250 years later, it is one of the world’s leading purveyors of fine art, jewelry, handbags, wine, rare books, the contents of movie-star homes, historical documents, digital artworks like NFTs and T-rex fossils, to name just some of the 80-plus types of art and luxury objects that Christie’s offers via auction and private sale. The business has a physical presence in more than 46 nations and salerooms in London, Hong Kong, Paris, Geneva and New York, where Ostrem has her office.

She describes her team of more than 30 people – the Trusts, Estates and Appraisals Department – as, “in many ways the core engine of our business.” What she means is that you can’t have world-class auctions without world-class things to sell, and a good percentage of those worldclass things come to Christie’s through her department…when the phone rings. The caller might be an estate or art attorney, an art advisor, the spouse, child or grandchild of a collector or the collector themselves, or even a noted writer who wants to sell her archive or a rock star who wants to sell his guitars.

The first step in the process is an appraisal. That’s a detailed catalog of what is in the collection, noting object-by-object what the object is, whether it can be authenticated, what its physical attributes are and an estimate of its value. Ostrem’s team are expert appraisers, and they assemble the right mix of experts from Christie’s vast group of specialists, come together to get the job done. “If you have something and wonder whether it has value, or if a place like Christie’s would sell it, call us,” Ostrem said. “We have the specialists at our disposal and if it is not for Christie’s to sell, we have a great network of partners in the auction sphere we can refer you to.”

The appraisal doesn’t always lead to an auction, but it is often the beginning of a relationship between Christie’s and the owners that can last decades, deepening with time. “We stay in touch,” Ostrem said. “We are a resource for the many needs collectors have. If there is a flood, we can help you restore a damaged painting. We can assist with fine art storage. We can make sure the appraisal of your collection stays up to date.”

Then comes the moment when – for whatever reason – the client decides it might be time to sell. Once again, Ostrem will assemble a team from within Christie’s and make a proposal for sale. “We would come up with a marketing plan that could be global in scale,” Ostrem said. “This is also the moment when we might ask if any of these works would be better for a private sale.” If the client approves the sale plan, Ostrem said, that’s when the hard work starts. “These sales are always so complicated,” she explains, “so many different departments can be involved and the logistics of mounting a sale can be complex, but that is what we do and it’s exhilarating.”

When the day of the sale comes, Ostrem said she is always nervous. “We are rooting for our client and you never know what is going to happen. That’s the nature of auctions. When it goes well it is amazing. You get to share this amazing experience with the client.”

Ostrem was raised in suburban Boston, the daughter of a physician father and mother who was a music teacher. It was a lovely childhood, but Ost-

rem shared that she dreamed of living in a big city. As it turned out, her first big city was Paris, where she went for a semester abroad from Bowdoin College, and to get a Masters in French from Middlebury College. That led to a three-plus year stint at a Parisian auction house, and then to Christie’s in New York, where she has been since 2017.

Today, she lives in Manhattan with her husband and their two children. It’s clear Ostrem loves her work, and while Christie’s is a business, it’s also clear that it is the people Ostrem works for who motivate her. There is a lot of chatter about art as an asset, but objects have much more emotional resonance than stocks and bonds. The auction process can be a celebration, or a chance to mourn or work out hard feelings.

“My role is to be sensitive to all of that and help them through something most people will experience just once in their lifetimes,” Ostrem said. “I am a coach, guide, shepherd and advocate. I am there to be a key partner in this fascinating and complex process and I love it.”
