As a community, we pause to remember all those who have passed away. In particular, we honor Rev. James Flynn, O.S.A. and Kevin “KT” Donohue, a member of the Class of 2027. Their lives impacted ours in profound ways—as a mentor and friend, as a classmate and teammate. Their legacy endures in the values they lived by, the lives they touched, and the spirit of brotherhood they embodied. We hold their families and friends in our prayers.

Rev. James Flynn, O.S.A. Father Jim Flynn served as a pillar in the Malvern Prep Community for 50 years in various roles—teacher, President, Head of School, and Chaplain.

However, he will be best remembered as a friend, a Friar brother, a mentor, a teacher, and a confidant. The Malvern Prep Community was fortunate that the Augustinian Order of St. Thomas of Villanova shared Fr. Flynn with us for all these years.

During his time at Malvern, Fr. Flynn held the roles of Math Department Chair, Dean of the Middle School, Head of School, and President. He also served as a member of the Malvern Prep Board of Trustees.

Throughout his incredible ministry at Malvern Prep, Fr. Flynn was instrumental in bringing people together and developing successful programs, such as MECO (Malvernians Encountering Christ in Others), which was created in 1975. This program has touched the lives of thousands of Malvern Prep students and has become a tradition that will endure and remain at Malvern Prep.

The Middle School at Malvern Preparatory School takes an innovative approach to teaching and learning—engaging and inspiring boys at a pivotal age by fostering inquisitive thinking, character development, and lifelong friendships. Our challenging Middle School curriculum prepares boys for the rigorous studies they’ll encounter in Upper School and beyond. They learn to think at a deeper level as we encourage them to ask important questions, think creatively, and apply their knowledge for the common good.

Kevin “KT” Donohue, a member of the Class of 2027, is the brother of Ben Donohue ’25 and the son of Kevin Donohue ’94. Kevin was an exceptional young man who exemplified the very best of what it means to be a Malvern Prep Friar.

Kevin’s life reminds us that the bonds of Malvern extend beyond our time on Warren Avenue—we are united by values and purpose greater than ourselves. Those who love him describe him as kind, humble, a great

From Home to Rome:

Two Augustinians from the Province of St. Thomas of Villanova Chosen to Lead the Worldwide Augustinian Order

On September 9, 2025, during the Augustinian General Chapter in Rome, Rev. Joseph L. Farrell, O.S.A., was elected the new prior general of the Augustinian Order worldwide. Fr. Joe faithfully served as vicar general (the Augustinians’ second-in-command) and assistant general for the past 12 years and now takes on the mantle of leadership for his brothers around the world.

Born in Drexel Hill, PA, Fr. Joe is a 1981 graduate of Msgr. Bonner High School. He earned a BS in Business Administration from Villanova University in 1985 before entering the Augustinian formation program and professing solemn vows in 1990. He received an MA in Theology from the Washington Theological Union and was ordained a priest in 1991. His ministry included assignments at St. Augustine Parish in Lawrence, MA, his alma mater, Bonner, and Merrimack College, where he served as campus minister. After earning advanced degrees in Rome, he returned to Villanova University as director of programming and outreach for Mission Effectiveness and was later elected provincial counselor. In 2013, he was appointed Vicar General and Assistant General for North America.

Rev. Kevin M. DePrinzio, O.S.A., another member of the Province and a member of the community at St. Augustine Friary at Albers Hall on Malvern Prep’s campus, was elected to the Augustinians’ General Council and appointed as assistant general for our English-speaking provinces around the world.

to religious life, they knew that I was meant to be an Augustinian, not a Jesuit,” Fr. Kevin said. Named Villanova University’s Vice President for Mission and Ministry in 2020, Fr. Kevin brought more than 20 years of experience as an educator, campus minister, vocational director, and administrator to the position, where he oversaw numerous pastoral and scholarly programs on campus.

He also served as an assistant professor in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies, as well as a panelist and facilitator for programs within Villanova’s Augustinian Institute.

“The Province of St. Thomas of Villanova and the whole Order are so proud of Fr. Joe and Fr. Kevin,” says Prior Provincial Rev. Robert P. Hagan, O.S.A., “Fr. Joe has served the Order in so many ways for so many years, and now he leads us all as the Augustinian Good Shepherd, helping us to stay one in mind and heart intent upon God. We are hardpressed to see Fr. Kevin leave the many roles that he fills both in our Province and at Villanova University, but we also understand that there is a greater good for the good of the Order, and we congratulate him and pray for him as he begins this new role.”

Fr. Kevin is also a graduate of Msgr. Bonner High School (1994), and earned his bachelor’s at St. Joseph’s University. “It was funny that the Jesuits at St. Joe’s knew that, although I was being called

GODSPELL

The Malvern Theatre Society took to the Duffy Arts Center stage this fall with their vibrant production of Godspell. Featuring its iconic, chart-topping score, Godspell retells the life and teachings of Jesus Christ through a dynamic series of parables brought to life with music, dance, and humor.

The production starred Donnie Sadoff ’26 as Jesus and Jack Heffner ’26 in the dual roles of John the Baptist and Judas, supported by an energetic and eclectic ensemble. Together, the cast guided the audience through lessons of love, loyalty, compassion, and community, using inventive staging, diverse musical styles, and moments of audience participation to illuminate the show’s timeless message.

Seven Seniors Recognized by the

National Merit Scholarship Program

Congratulations to seniors Blake Lee and Matthias Michlitsch for being named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Blake and Matthias are among more than 16,000 semifinalists nationwide who have earned the opportunity to advance in the competition for a chance to receive a National Merit Scholarship.

We also congratulate seniors Matthew Balmer, Luke Bobbitt, Mac Crawford, John Kelley, and Luke Vandevere for being recognized as Commended Scholars.

These honors follow the 2024 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which was administered to high school juniors last fall. Out of approximately 1.3 million participants nationwide, recognition is awarded to the highest-scoring entrants within each state. mp

Malvern Prep Welcomes the Class of 2029 and Transfer Students at

Brotherhood Ceremony On Wednesday, September 17, Malvern Prep formally welcomed the Class of 2029 and transfer students from the Classes of 2027 and 2028 into the Malvern Community during the Brotherhood Ceremony in the O’Neill Sports Center.

Dr. Patrick Sillup, Head of School, opened the ceremony by welcoming our newest members of the Upper School. “Today is a celebration of who we are as a Malvern Prep Community,” he stated, “a community bound by faith, strength, and by love, and committed to being for and with one another anytime and every time we need it.”

Rev. William Gabriel, O.S.A., emphasized to our students, “Make a choice to be part of something bigger than yourselves every day, every moment.” He acknowledged that they may fail or not get it right, but will always have the support of those around them, encouraging them to choose this brotherhood. “For the newest Friars, you have the opportunity, the privilege, of making that choice, of saying I want to be a part of that and I’m willing to do my part to make it something special.”

Following the speakers, the formal induction ceremony began with students seated alongside their parents and guardians. They were then presented with a medal of St. Augustine, which their parents or guardians placed around their necks. These medals

depict the image of St. Augustine, the spiritual founder of the Augustinian Order of Priests, who established Malvern Prep.

Each student and his family were blessed by one of the five Augustinian Friars participating in the ceremony: Rev. William Gabriel, O.S.A., Rev. Michael Riggs, O.S.A., Rev. Donald Reilly, O.S.A. D.Min, Rev. Bernie Scianna, O.S.A., PhD, and Rev. Patrick McStravog, O.S.A. Following the blessing, students signed their names in the class ledger, symbolizing their acceptance into the Malvern Brotherhood, before returning to sit with their classmates, a gesture marking their formal membership in the Malvern Prep Community.

Dr. Sillup closed the ceremony by addressing the Class of 2029 and transfer students, reminding them that continuing to be present and being for and with each other shows that they understand what Malvern is all about. “We need all of you … to do your part. Your talents, your energy, your interests, ideas, and perspectives are precisely what we need … to shape Malvern Prep in ways we cannot imagine at this time and will be better because of it.”

Faces of St. Augustine Installation August 27 marked not only the opening day of the academic year, but also the Feast Day of St. Monica and the opening of the School’s newest installation: Faces of St. Augustine.

of their geographic and ethnic origins. This exhibit explores how centuries of artists have interpreted the person of Augustine and his message of Truth, Unity, and Love.

The installation is located on the 2nd floor of Sullivan Hall, outside of the Office of Mission & Ministry. It pays homage to the School’s patron, St. Augustine of Hippo, and presents a collection of portraits that draw from diverse artistic traditions, cultures, and historical periods. The images span from the 6th century to one of the most contemporary works, An Unlikely Aquilegia: North African Saint of Hippo, commissioned by Villanova University in 2022.

“This exhibit really allows our students to discover how St. Augustine has been portrayed throughout history. It is important for them to recognize that while they see the various depictions, the message of St. Augustine and his impact on the Church remains constant. He understood that he needed others to become the person God called him to be. His relationship with his friends, son, mom, and God ignited in him the desire to build community wherever he went. This message is something all of our community members can relate to,” shares Rev. Bill Gabriel, O.S.A., Head of Mission & Ministry. mp

World’s Strongest Math Teacher

Malvern alum and current Upper School Math teacher, Mr. Joe Basiura ’18, has recently worked his way to being a professional Strongman.

Did you know that Malvern Prep has a professional strongman on campus? Malvern Prep regards him as the “World’s Strongest Math Teacher.” Obviously, this refers to Malvern alum Mr. Basiura ’18.

Basiura began playing football from a young age, before he came to Malvern. As he transitioned to Malvern, he continued to pursue excellence on the football field. His hard work enabled him to attend the University of Pennsylvania and play football at the collegiate level.

Mr. Erik Miller P’30, Malvern’s Director of Strength and Conditioning and formerly Mr. Basiura’s teacher, said, “[Basiura] has improved greatly since walking into the [Malvern Prep] gym in 8th grade.”

Basiura started doing Olympic-style lifting and then shifted towards more football-oriented training while playing at the University of Pennsylvania. Basiura adds, “I remember when football season was over at Penn, and I would go to the gym every day, and the owner was a strongman.” He pushed Basiura to try to compete in a local competition near Penn, and after the competition, he decided to stick with it.

Outside of the weight room, Basiura is a math teacher and football coach, as he teaches algebra and geometry in the Upper School.

Basiura explained that it worked out the last two years in terms of scheduling, as football season allowed him to take a break.

“The key downside to the sixteen-week prep would be that I have to miss family vacations. I sometimes have to miss birthday parties, or if my wife wants to do something, I have to turn her down,” Basiura said. He explained that it is hard to miss these bonding experiences, but it is necessary to take the next step in his lifting career. As he continues to move up the Strongman ladder, he will continue to earn more money and earn endorsements.

Caroline Basiura, Basiura’s wife and a registered nurse, explained that she and their son miss him, but they look forward to his safe return and debriefs during his extended break from competing.

“We pray that he comes back in one piece without harm and injury,” said Caroline.

Training for these competitions is rigorous, both physically and mentally. Strongmen can go on to train for four hours a day, lifting exceedingly heavy weights. Mr. Miller aids in Basiura’s training as a guide and gives feedback on what he believes would benefit most.

“I can bounce certain ideas off him, and I also train with other Strongmen, which increases the training,” Miller said.

Outside of the gym, however, Caroline is a key to his success. “She takes away a lot of the burden from household things. She is the glue, basically,” Basiura said.

Caroline adds, “He does all the heavy lifting, so I try to make everything else (cleaning, yard work, and more) easier so he can focus on his goals.”

Mentally, these competitions are no easier. Over time, Basiura has figured out how to get into the right headspace before competitions through years of hard work. “You know, we’re talking three hour sessions a lot of times, and it’s always heavy for the most part, it’s hard to stay focused for that long for a lot of people, and then he’s got to do it for a certain amount of weeks before the competition,” says Miller regarding the perseverance to overcome distractions in training. During competitions there can be from five and six competitions to eight. As Basiura describes it, “a long emotional roller coaster.” Events can go really well or poorly, and that has to sit in your conscience during breaks, which can break you down. “During breaks, I just try to relax and move on,” he explains.

Basiura has been trying to practice new ways to get himself centered before big competitions. “Leading up to that, I like to spend a lot of time watching films.” The film Basiura watches consists of other professionals who do similar events. “The day before the event, that’s the main thing I tend to use to relax and look at minor details I can improve upon. On the day of it, however, I just try to be calm, but then when it’s time to compete, I get amped up very easily.”

In the end, Basiura won his pro card in his last competition. He looks forward to competing at the next level, as he was very excited, saying, “After all the sacrifices I had to endure, I was relieved to see it pay off.”

His family is the reason he keeps competing, as he wants to provide more income to the family.

Basiura’s next competition is in March. Friars, let’s make sure we support him. mp

Malvern Prep Celebrates

Homecoming and Reunion Weekend Malvern Prep’s Homecoming and Reunion Weekend brought alumni, families, and friends to campus for a beautiful fall weekend on Friday, October 17, and Saturday, October 18, 2025.

The festivities began on Friday evening with the Alumni Association’s Alumni Awards Ceremony. James Bruder ’94 P’24, Captain Gregory A. Cummings USMC (Ret.) ’04, Paul Ostick ’07, and Mr. Jay Schiller were inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame and were honored for their outstanding athletic achievements and contributions to Malvern Prep’s athletic history.

Saturday morning featured an Open House, welcoming prospective students and their families to experience campus life firsthand. The day’s athletic schedule

showcased our Friar pride, with Varsity Soccer followed by Varsity Football.

Families, students, alumni, faculty, and staff enjoyed the Pig Roast and camaraderie of the afternoon.

Later in the evening, students attended the Homecoming Fest Dance while alumni from class years ending in 5 and 0 celebrated their reunions.

Milestone reunion classes gathered to reminisce and reconnect as the Class of 1960 celebrated its 65th reunion, the Class of 1965 celebrated its 60th reunion, and the Class of 1975 celebrated its 50th reunion.

Homecoming and Reunion was an incredible weekend, made possible by the efforts of the Alumni Association, Mothers’ and Fathers’ Club volunteers, students, faculty, and staff.

Book Vending Machine Turns Heads ... and Pages A new Book Vending Machine was unveiled in November in the 3rd-floor hallway of Riley Hall, which has garnered interest from Middle School students as well as some curious Upper Schoolers.

What started as a simple idea of hosting a book fair for the Middle School soon evolved into something more fun and exciting for our students. The project, led by Ms. Shay Quigley and Mrs. Lauren Robinson, began last year with the goal of sparking even greater interest in reading among Middle School students.

The vending machine is powered by tokens that students earn to redeem a book from the vending machine. “When a Middle School Faculty member wants to recognize a student exceeding expectations, whether that’s academic-related or doing something exceptionally kind, they will reward students with a token to use at the vending machine. The student uses the machine much like a typical vending machine, selecting the slot that contains the book they want to read. The book is theirs to keep! I have seen a few students at the machine, redeeming their tokens for a book. The joy I saw on their faces as they held their new book, excited to read it, is absolutely priceless,” explains Quigley.

Robinson shares that the feedback to the vending machine has been positive! “Any time we get new books on campus and can help get kids excited about reading, we’re thrilled,” she explains. The only downside to installing the vending machine has been that the students’ demand for books has outpaced the supply … not a bad problem to have!

“As we move forward, we will continue to explore ways to fund more books, allowing us to distribute tokens more generously, enabling students to earn books more frequently. Since we want to encourage a culture of reading, the goal is to get as many books into the students’ hands as possible,” notes Robinson.

A lending library has also been installed near the vending machine, where students can bring books they’ve already read from the machine and lend them to others. mp

On Wednesday, October 29, Malvern Preparatory School inducted two members into the James H. Stewart IV Wall of Distinction during a school-wide ceremony. The award recognizes individuals who provide an extraordinary contribution to both Malvern Prep and the community as a whole. Honorees are wonderful examples of selfless service to others and to the Common Good, which demonstrates the Augustinian values of the Malvern Prep experience.

This year’s inductees were Mr. Lawrence “Larry” DiPaul and Ms. Mary Fischer-Nassib P’08’11’14, both of whom were honored by proud family and friends at the ceremony.

Dr. Patrick Sillup welcomed the honorees, their families, friends, and the Malvern Community. “As we honor Larry and Mary, keep in mind that their stories remind us that Malvern is not a temporary experience but a forever proposition, shaping how we live, how we lead, and how we love in this world,” he shared.

Mr. Len DiPaul spoke on behalf of his brother, Larry, who passed away in 2014. “Larry spoke about leadership, but Larry was a follower … he followed the Gospel, and he made the Gospel matter,” shared Len. He described his brother as a ‘coach’ who came to Malvern Prep to take the gifts and talents of the people at Malvern and make the world better. Next to speak on behalf of Larry was a former faculty member, friend, and colleague of Larry’s, Mr. John Ostick P’99’07’13. John explained that under Larry’s leadership, Christian Service became essential to the Malvern Prep experience. “He created community, fostered by our Augustinian values. The message he shared with Malvern Prep was to reflect not on what we do in service, but why we do service,” shared Ostick.

The second inductee, Mary Fischer-Nassib, is the Co-founder of Sow Good Now, a non-profit established in 2018 to teach philanthropy through organized youth sports. Sow Good Now works closely with the Malvern Prep Community to run the Caritas Carnival held on campus every spring for 200 children from area elementary schools who would otherwise not be able to enjoy a field trip with their classmates. “It is only through working with you [the students] that I have a place here at Malvern, and I am very proud of that,” shared Fischer-Nassib.

She expressed her joy at seeing how the Caritas Carnival has grown every year, “It is living proof that we all have the ability to walk out our Augustinian Values and share the light of God on this campus.” Mary described the Malvern Community as an “Army of Augustinians,” encouraging students to act as a community of one to perform service to better the world, even

Inductees Mr. Lawrence “Larry” DiPaul Larry graduated from St. Joseph’s Prep in 1965 and completed his studies at St. Charles Seminary, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy and a Master of Divinity degree. As a former priest in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, Larry served as associate pastor at parishes from the 1970s to the mid-90s.

In 1997, fate brought Larry to Malvern Prep, where, during his tenure (1997-2004), he taught theology and single-handedly designed and launched our official Christian Service Program, planting the seeds for what it has now become.

Following his time at Malvern Prep, Larry served as Director of the Romero Center (2004-2007), a retreat and social justice education center in East Camden affiliated with St. Joseph’s Pro-Cathedral.

Larry DiPaul was a tireless advocate for the Catholic Church’s teachings on life and social justice.

Unfortunately, he was taken from this world too soon, dying in February 2014. His impact, care, and compassion will be remembered forever.

Mary Fischer-Nassib P’08’11’14 Mary always felt a calling to give back. Starting a family was also a priority, so that came first, but the calling to make an impact through service never left her. She spent so much time at practices and games for her children, making service work difficult to schedule. It was then that she thought, “Why not give back through sports?”

Currently, Mary is the President and Co-founder of Sow Good Now, based in Newtown Square, PA, an organization that empowers high school and college athletes to use their sports as platforms for philanthropy—sharing their time, talents, treasures, and community ties to benefit underserved youth through what they call the GiveBack model.

Mary is the proud mother of two daughters and three sons. Her sons, Ryan ’08, Carl ’11, and John ’14, are graduates of Malvern Prep. She remains deeply connected to our school community, helping lead the annual Caritas Carnival and other service traditions. mp

Marks Major Milestones in Malvern. Forever. Campaign Just one year after publicly launching Malvern. Forever.: The Campaign for our Future, Malvern Prep is celebrating extraordinary progress toward its $65 million goal. As of January 2026, the community has already raised more than $64 million, demonstrating remarkable dedication from alumni, parents, faculty, staff, and friends.

Transforming Campus Life The campaign focuses on three priorities: capital projects, annual giving, and endowment growth, each driving significant change. Recent campus enhancements include the opening of Riley Hall for Middle School students, new baseball and multipurpose turf fields, and the Vic Maggitti Pavilion, now home to Counseling and Student Support Services.

The most ambitious project, the Davis Center, broke ground in spring 2025 with plans to open for the 2026–27 school year. Designed to unite athletics, academics, wellness, and student activities under one roof, the Davis Center is supported by a transformational $5 million gift from Mr. and Mrs. Jim Davis ’78, including an endowment for long-term maintenance.

The entrance to the Davis Center will honor the legacy of Rev. James Flynn, O.S.A., who passed away last summer.

The entry plaza will be named “Our Lady of Victory Plaza,” paying homage to how Fr. Flynn would end the team prayer, “Our Lady of Victory, Pray for Us.” Gifts made in Fr. Flynn’s memory support the creation of Our Lady of Victory Plaza, which now serves as a lasting reminder of his life and influence, allowing his impact to continue inspiring future Friars.

Record-Breaking Philanthropy In the first year of the public campaign phase, annual giving reached new heights. Signature giving days raised over $700,000 combined, with alumni participation reaching 20%, and 390 first-time donors came together to support Malvern. EITC/OSTC contributions topped $2 million, the Friar Club grew 83% to $589,867, and major gifts continued to accelerate.

Strengthening the Endowment Endowment support has reached 78% of its goal, with generous investments in robotics, college counseling, rowing, scholarships, and the future upkeep of the Davis Center.

Highlights A Message from the

Head of Athletics The close of the 2025 Friar sports season brought many reasons for the Malvern Prep Community to celebrate. Our studentathletes excelled both on and off the field, and we continue to take immense pride in their accomplishments.

The Cross Country team reclaimed the PAISAA State Championship, finishing with an impressive team score of 76 points. Brock Yoder ’27 led the way and became the first athlete in Malvern Prep history to compete at Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, OR. The Golf team ended its season with a tie for first place at the 2025 PAISAA Championship.

Congratulations are also in order for the Football team, which secured a share of the Inter-Ac title, and for the Rugby 7s team, which concluded its season ranked among the top 10 teams in Pennsylvania. Senior Rowing team members Jack Arbogast and Brendan Schuck were named to the 2026 USRowing Scholastic Honor Roll for their achievements both in the classroom and on the water.

Another highlight this fall was gathering to celebrate 30 student-athletes in our first group of seniors as they announced their commitment to play collegiate athletics. We look forward to celebrating more signees throughout the year!

Malvern Prep Celebrates in Golf and PAISAA Cross Country Championship Titles The Malvern Prep Community gathered on November 4 to celebrate and recognize the Golf and Cross Country teams for capturing the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association (PAISAA) Championship titles.

Head of Athletics, Mr. Jim Stewart Jr. ’86, opened the program by sharing his pride in the collective effort that led both teams to success. “They have talent, and they have friendship. When you sprinkle that with Truth, Unity, and Love, that is a recipe for success.”

The Cross Country team reclaimed the PAISAA State Championship at Belmont Plateau on October 25, finishing with a team score of 76 points to edge out defending

champions Penn Charter and Episcopal Academy in a thrilling finish. Brock Yoder ’27 won the individual title with a standout performance, setting a new PAISAA meet record with a time of 15:44.

Head Varsity Cross Country Coach, Mr. Mike Koenig, shared his excitement, “This is a moment we will remember for a long time.

We won the closest race in PAISAA history, with the top three teams separated by only six points. This victory is a testament to hard work and persistence.”

Senior co-captain Alex de Vries ’26, who helped the team with a strong finish down the stretch, added, “Instead of running as a group of seven individuals, we ran as one team. Through this unity, each and every one of us was able to do what we needed to win.”

Under the leadership of Mr. Gary Duda ’88 P’26, Head Varsity Golf Coach—who celebrated his 500th career win with this title—the Golf team also capped off its season in championship fashion. The Friars tied for first place at the 2025 PAISAA Championship, held at Radley Run Country Club on October 27, matching Episcopal Academy’s team score of 302 to share the state title.

Coach Duda praised the team’s unselfish approach. “This group celebrates the ‘we over me,’ and when you have that mindset, good things happen. That spirit was on full display with both of these teams.”

Fall Sports Wrap-Up CROSS COUNTRY The Cross Country team rebounded from a disappointing third-place finish at the InterAc Championships to deliver a stunning upset victory at the PAISAA Championship Meet on October 25 at Belmont Plateau. The win marked Malvern’s third PAISAA state title, and its first in a decade.

Junior standout Brock Yoder ’27 led the Friars throughout the season, establishing himself as a national-caliber athlete. He capped his remarkable campaign by setting a new school record, clocking an impressive 14:54 for the 5K distance. mp

FOOTBALL Malvern Prep Football opened the season with a heartbreaking, last-second loss to La Salle at the Battle at the Beach. From that loss, the team responded with remarkable resilience, rattling off eight straight victories against one of the toughest schedules in Pennsylvania.

The season’s final chapter brought another dramatic finish, falling to Springside Chestnut Hill Academy in overtime on the last play

of the game. Yet even in the toughest moments, the squad displayed the heart, unity, and determination that have become hallmarks of the program.

Capping off the season, Malvern Prep earned a share of the Inter-Ac title, a testament to the players’ dedication, talent, and relentless spirit. mp

Jackson Ford’s Next Chapter:

Augustinian Roots, Penn State Bound When given the opportunity to sit down with Jackson Ford ’26, Malvern Prep senior and four-star Penn State football commit, one might not know what to expect. From our first introduction, it is clear that Ford possesses a quiet confidence that immediately defies expectations. Standing 6-feet-4 inches and 240 pounds, he carries the stature and strength of his Division I counterparts; however, he possesses something few other 2026 recruits have: the humble heart of an Augustinian.

“His play on the field is awesome,” notes Malvern Prep Head Varsity Football Coach Dave Gueriera P’24. “He is the hardest guy to block in the state of Pennsylvania. But as a kid, he is so humble. I’ve coached a ton of kids who have been in his situation, but if you talk to him, you would never know the attention he has received—that they’re already talking about selling his jerseys at Penn State, and he doesn’t even have a number yet. His humility and his energy—I truly value that.”

This fall, at just 17 years old, Ford faced a decision that few elite athletes ever encounter. With scholarship offers from more than 30 of the nation’s top football programs—including the 2025 national champions, Ohio State—the standout defensive end had to decide where he would take his talents after Malvern Prep. After careful consideration, he chose Penn State.

During our interview, Ford displayed the poise and polish of a seasoned media-trained professional. Speaking with him, you would never know that only weeks earlier, his signing had been shaken by the departure of Penn State Head Coach James Franklin.

While many 2026 recruits reacted by reopening their recruitment or following Franklin elsewhere, Ford stood firm in his convictions and remained committed to Penn State.

“After Coach Franklin left, my parents, my coaches, and I talked about maybe looking at other options and reconsidering my commitment,” Ford said. “But at the end of the day, I committed to the school and the other coaches as well. One coach—obviously the head coach—is very important, but my position coach, the strength and conditioning coach, those people are super important too. I don’t think one should outweigh the many.”

Ever the team player, Ford noted that although there were rumblings surrounding Franklin’s departure, his focus never wavered from his senior season at Malvern Prep.

“I wasn’t being ignorant of it. I wasn’t ignoring it,” he said. “I just wasn’t prioritizing it. I was more focused on my team and being where my feet were—trying to play the best football I could for my high school team and finish the season strong.”

And finish strong, he did. Ford gave everything he had to the Friars during his senior campaign. Malvern Prep finished 8–2 and captured a share of the Inter-Ac League Championship. He served as a team captain, earned all-region honors, and was named First Team All-Inter-Ac. This spring, Jackson will head to State College to begin classes and practice with the Penn State football program and the newly named Head Coach, Matt Campbell—another potentially daunting transition for a 17-year-old. Yet Ford is no stranger to change. He began his high school career at Phoenixville Area High School before transferring to Malvern Prep in his junior year, a move he now reflects on with gratitude.

“I often say to my mom and dad that I wish I had come to Malvern my freshman year. That’s why my little brother is coming in his freshman year,” Ford said. “Malvern is a college-preparatory school.

The academics are at a high level. The campus is set up like a college.

And the football team is run like a college team. You get to play with and compete with some of the best kids in the state. Malvern Prep has prepared me for so much.”

Despite only playing two seasons at Malvern Prep, Jackson Ford will take with him to State College an extensive fanbase of Friar faithful, more than 1,000 new Instagram followers since announcing his Penn State commitment, and, most importantly, an Augustinian foundation that will continue to ground him in humility as he pursues the next chapter of his football journey. mp

GOLF The 2025 Friars capped off another stellar season, finishing second in the Inter-Ac and sharing the PAISAA State Championship title with Episcopal Academy. Along the way, the team captured titles at the Stonewall Tournament as well as the Penn Charter, Malvern Prep, and Episcopal Academy Invitationals, showcasing remarkable depth and consistency.

Senior standout Davis Conaway made program history, becoming the first Friar ever to earn First Team All-League recognition five times. Conaway also concluded his illustrious career as a four-

time team MVP and the 2025 Match Play Champion. Colby Komancheck ’27 captured the 2025 PAISAA Individual Championship title and earned medalist honors at both the Episcopal Academy and Germantown Academy Invitationals.

Strong senior leadership was once again key to the Friars’ success. Captains Davis Conaway ’26, Pat Duda ’26, and Thomas Ploszay ’26 set the tone from day one, exemplifying the work ethic, discipline, and sportsmanship that define Malvern Prep golf. mp

ROWING Malvern Prep rowing had a successful fall season. At the King’s Head Regatta, Malvern won the Men’s U19 1x, U15 1x, U19 2x & Open 4x. At the Head of the Charles this year, Malvern’s men’s youth 2x finished 6th out of 57 boats, and 1.2 seconds behind 5th place.

This is the top finish for a men’s youth 2x at the Head of the Charles during Coach Konopka’s time.

Finally, at Head of the Schuylkill, Malvern swept the Varsity Trainer 1x, had 2 of the top 3 finishes in the JV Trainer 1x, had 2 of the top 3 finishes in the JV 1x, and finished 1st and 3rd in the Varsity 2x. This is the first time Malvern Prep has won the Varsity 2x at Head of the Schuylkill under Coach Konopka. mp

RUGBY The Malvern Prep Rugby 7s team closed out an impressive season with a 7–5–1 record and recognition as a top-10 team in Pennsylvania. Those accomplishments only scratch the surface of what made this year truly remarkable for the team.

While most 7s teams carry 15–20 players, with 12 eligible to suit up for each match, the Friars competed all season with a roster that never exceeded 11 at any tournament. Rather than easing off or looking ahead to the spring, the players embraced the challenge, using it as fuel to elevate their game individually and collectively. The team’s performance was a testament to the exceptional skill, determination, and resilience of every player. mp

SOCCER The Malvern Prep Soccer team finished the season with a 9–10–2 record, highlighted by strong early momentum and several signature wins. The Friars opened with key victories over Holy Ghost Prep, The Hill School, Lawrenceville, Mercersburg, and Broadfording, setting a confident tone as they headed into Inter-Ac play.

Malvern began its league schedule with a solid win over Germantown Academy, but the next four Inter-Ac matchups brought close defeats, each decided by just one goal. Entering the second round of league play with two wins, the Friars responded with one of their most impressive performances of the season: a thrilling 2–1 victory over eventual Inter-Ac Champions Penn Charter, handing PC its only league loss. The team closed the season on a high note, earning a decisive 3–0 win over Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. mp

WATER POLO The Water Polo team took an important step forward this season, laying the groundwork for a strong and sustainable program. Despite the early-season hurdles, including an early start and a demanding schedule filled with top-tier opponents, the players approached every practice, game, and tournament with determination. Their relentless effort paid off in the final stretch, as the Friars closed the season by winning four of their last five games.

While the overall record may not fully reflect the team’s true talent, growth, and potential, their steady improvement signals a promising future.

The team looks forward to starting next season the same way they finished this one, on a high note. mp

1960s ___________________________________________________________ Tim Flanagan ’60, co-founder of Catholic Leadership Institute, was recently honored with two prestigious awards in Catholic leadership.

Tim received the 2025 St. Vincent de Paul Award in October and the 2025 St. Juan Diego Leadership for the World (SJLW) Award in November. Both of these significant awards recognize his faithful service and transformative leadership in the Catholic Church.

Bob McIntyre ’63 recently went on an 11-day pilgrimage to Italy for the Jubilee 2025, traveling with 40 pilgrims and three priests. The group visited Assisi, Oveto, Sorrento, Pompeii, and Rome, where they had the opportunity to cross through the Four Holy Doors at the four major Basilicas and see Pope Leo XIV up close. It was a fantastic opportunity to strengthen his Catholic faith.

ESPN College baseball analyst and former Malvern Prep Baseball Coach Mike Rooney ’88 enjoyed reconnecting with two of his former players, Ben Davis ’95 P’24 T and Jeff Hilliard ’95, along with current Head Varsity Coach Freddy Hilliard.

Mark Lindsay ’95, a 16-year NBA referee, has found a special calling on the courts of Treasure Beach, Jamaica. For more than a decade, he has volunteered each year at the PMBL Basketball Camp, where he’s best known simply as “Coach Mark.”

Ben Davis ’95 P’24 T traveled to Omaha, NE, to watch his son, Tague ’24, play for the University of Louisville in the College World Series. Accompanying Ben on the trip were former classmate Jeff Hilliard ’95 and Head Varsity Baseball Coach Freddy Hilliard.

2000s _____________________________________________________ Mike Croce ’00 P’27’31 recently completed a renovation of Hotel State College, which he co-owns in State College, PA. The updated property serves visitors to the Penn State area.

Classmates Tim Donnelly ’95 P’25 and Jeff Hilliard ’95 participated in the 50th annual Marine Corps Marathon on October 26, 2025. This was especially meaningful for Tim as he is a United States Marine.

The Class of 1995 came together in October at P.J. Whelihan’s in Malvern to celebrate their 30-year reunion. Over 40% of the class attended, and the night was filled with many laughs, countless stories, and the presence of several former teachers.

Eric DeLone ’04 qualified for the 2026 Ironman World Championships in Kona, HI, after finishing 5th in his age group and 32nd overall at Ironman Maryland in September. This will be his first time on the Big Island, and he and the family are excited!

NOTES Cory Furlong ’09 and James Brandolini ’10 toured Japan last spring and connected with the owner of a cheesesteak shop.

Cory and James have now both attained CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) status and are living in the Philadelphia region.

Elliot Whaley ’05 married his wife, Colette, in September 2023.

That same year, his track team broke the American Record for the Shuttle Hurdle Relay at the USA Masters Nationals in July.

Joe Miele III ’09 and his wife, Katie, welcomed their second son, Johnny, on the 4th of July! Joey IV is already excelling at his new role as big brother.

Matthew Giannascoli ’07 and Ariana Ramos were married at the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista in Old San Juan, PR, in March 2024. Matt is an attorney, and Ariana is a veterinarian specializing in equine care. Many family and friends joined to celebrate, including Danny Giannascoli ’15, Tony Giannascoli P’07’09’15, Cathy Giannascoli P’07’09’15, Andrew Giannascoli ’09, AJ DiValerio ’07, and Steve Frey ’07.

Dr. Christopher Paolino ’08 recently received an award from Christiana Care Health System in recognition of outstanding contributions to the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Service. This highlights coverage of facial trauma, head & neck infections, elective surgery, and resident training. He also reunited with his longtime friend, Dr. John “Jack” Reynolds ’08, in the operating room on November 22, 2025. Dr. Reynolds is an orthopaedic hand and upper extremity surgeon who specializes in the treatment of conditions affecting the elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand.

2010s ______________________________________________________ The Tuesday before Thanksgiving has become a cherished tradition for many Malvern Prep alumni! The Fourth Annual Friar Fairmount Night was hosted at Bad Brother, an award-winning Philadelphia restaurant founded by Malvern alumni Nick Pund ’10, CJ Pund ’08, and Xander Pund ’15. Bad Brother has recently earned recognition from The Philadelphia Inquirer for serving some of the best wings in the city, which attendees enjoyed. Be sure to mark your calendar for next year’s gathering on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. We look forward to continuing this tradition and seeing even more Friars come together!

James Gentile ’11 married Lindsay (Kroll) Gentile on December 7, 2024, at Overbrook Golf Club. The ceremony was officiated by John Gentile, Esq. ’08. Groomsmen included Michael Dougherty ’11 and Conner Duncan ’11.

Alec Somers ’11 and his wife, Tara, welcomed their second son, Graham, born in October 2025.

Thomas Kovell ’11 and his wife, Molly, welcomed Lola Florence Kovell on October 12, 2025.

William Grant ’11 recently accepted an assistant coaching position with the University of Southern California (USC) Men’s Water Polo team, one of the top programs in the country. He will now compete annually for a national championship with the Trojans, aiming to win their first since 2018.

Ryan Bonner ’12 and Louise Bonner (Chakejian) welcomed Brady Patrick Bonner in May. Brady joins Beau (2) and Lucy (1) to make them a family of five.

Keith Dreyer ’11 and his wife, Nicolette, welcomed their first-born child, a son named Cooper, in late September 2025. Keith and his family reside in the greater DC area.

Patrick Boyle ’12 recently started a new role as Vice President, Digital Assets Product Manager within Global Markets at BNP Paribas in New York City. After several rewarding years with the bank in the Philadelphia area, he is excited to begin this next chapter in a field he has been passionate about for the past five years. The move to New York marks an important milestone both personally and professionally, and he welcomes fellow Friars in the city to reach out and say hello.

Mattias Jones ’13 was married in Stockholm, Sweden, on June 27, to his now wife, Emily. Multiple Malvern Prep alumni traveled across the pond to celebrate, including Tom Jones ’80 P’13, Nick Gaudiosi ’99 P’30, Cameron Liebert ’10, PJ Mullen ’13, Brendan Papariello ’13, Christian Dambly ’13, and Jared Horoski ’13.

Kevin Frost ’12 was married on May 25, 2025, to his beautiful wife, Ashley, in Valparaiso, IN.

Michael Farrell ’15 married Megan Davey on May 24, 2025.

Michael serves as the Program Coordinator for the Jesuit Volunteer Corps Pacific Northwest, while also pursuing a master’s degree in Social Work. Michael and Megan are currently residing part-time in both Alaska and California.

RJ Napoli ’17 married Kathleen Garcia on September 26, 2025, at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Montclair, NJ, where the couple resides. RJ teaches English to 7th graders in Newark, NJ, and serves as Grade Team Leader. RJ is an active member of his parish, serving as a lector and coach in the OCIA program.

Rahdir Hicks ’21 graduated from Towson University in May 2025 with a bachelor’s degree in Business and Finance and a minor in Marketing. While at Towson, he continued with his passion for basketball as a student-athlete. Radhir is now continuing both his academic and athletic journeys at Flagler College in Saint Augustine, FL, where he’s pursuing an accelerated master’s program and plans to graduate in August 2026.

Since graduating from Malvern Prep, Jayln Evans ’22 has continued his football career at Fordham University. While he has worked extremely hard on the field, he was also recently named to the Gabelli School of Business Dean’s List for the 2024–2025 academic year. In addition to maintaining high academic standards, he has continued to grow and manage his clothing brand, Relentless Mentality, while keeping his heart focused on God through student organizations such as the 2nd Timothy Club.

Jayln thanks the Malvern Prep Community for providing a world-class education, meaningful mentorship, and leadership values that continue to shape his journey.

Tague Davis ’24 capped off an All-American Freshman season at the University of Louisville by making it to the College World Series in Omaha with his father, Ben ’95 P’24 T, by his side. Tague set the freshman home run record with 18 home runs.

Cole Hanna ’24, Brayden Baum ’24, and Caiden Canale ’24 are continuing their Malvern Prep Brotherhood as roommates at Penn State.

Malvern alumni and current students went on an overnight shark fishing trip in Cape May, NJ, last summer. They caught and released a six-foot sand tiger shark! As a community, we pause to remember all those who have passed away. In particular, we honor Rev. James Flynn, O.S.A. and Kevin “KT” Donohue, a member of the Class of 2027. Their lives impacted ours in profound ways—as a mentor and friend, as a classmate and teammate. Their legacy endures in the values they lived by, the lives they touched, and the spirit of brotherhood they embodied. We hold their families and friends in our prayers.

Rev. James Flynn, O.S.A. Father Jim Flynn served as a pillar in the Malvern Prep Community for 50 years in various roles—teacher, President, Head of School, and Chaplain.

However, he will be best remembered as a friend, a Friar brother, a mentor, a teacher, and a confidant. The Malvern Prep Community was fortunate that the Augustinian Order of St. Thomas of Villanova shared Fr. Flynn with us for all these years.

During his time at Malvern, Fr. Flynn held the roles of Math Department Chair, Dean of the Middle School, Head of School, and President. He also served as a member of the Malvern Prep Board of Trustees.

Throughout his incredible ministry at Malvern Prep, Fr. Flynn was instrumental in bringing people together and developing successful programs, such as MECO (Malvernians Encountering Christ in Others), which was created in 1975. This program has touched the lives of thousands of Malvern Prep students and has become a tradition that will endure and remain at Malvern Prep.

The Middle School at Malvern Preparatory School takes an innovative approach to teaching and learning—engaging and inspiring boys at a pivotal age by fostering inquisitive thinking, character development, and lifelong friendships. Our challenging Middle School curriculum prepares boys for the rigorous studies they’ll encounter in Upper School and beyond. They learn to think at a deeper level as we encourage them to ask important questions, think creatively, and apply their knowledge for the common good.

Kevin “KT” Donohue, a member of the Class of 2027, is the brother of Ben Donohue ’25 and the son of Kevin Donohue ’94. Kevin was an exceptional young man who exemplified the very best of what it means to be a Malvern Prep Friar.

Kevin’s life reminds us that the bonds of Malvern extend beyond our time on Warren Avenue—we are united by values and purpose greater than ourselves. Those who love him describe him as kind, humble, a great
