Poetry Out Loud

A Nation Caught in War

H

ours of practice, constant recitation of poems, and much needed peer encouragement is only a few of the very vital steps in preparing for the school wide competition of Poetry Out Loud. The second and last round of the poetry recitation contest took place on Jan. 25, 2012 where all of the period winners competed against each other for a place in advancing to the next level of competition. The week before winter vacation, Malden High School held the first round of the competition.The period winners recited their poems in front of over 500 people including staff and students. The 14 students reciting their poems represent-

t is the war that we all know about. It is the war that makes Taliban, Afghanistan and suicide bombers everyday words in the American residents’ vocabulary for the past ten years. It is the war that marked my classmates childhood, bringing us out of naivety to what is happening in the world around us and how deadly it can be. Now after the marking of the ten year anniversary of the US’s entrance into Afghanistan (October 2001- 2011) Afghani president Hamid Karzai claims that peace talks between members will occur with the now defunct Taliban government, and these talks will continued on page 6
