Pioneer Charter plans move to Everett Village site Planning Board concerned about neighborhood crowding, local control By Brendan Clogston ioneer Charter School announced plans to move from their longtime home in the city center to a new location in Everett’s Village area Monday, though city planning officials are nervous about the potential impact the move could have on the already crowded neighborhood. Pioneer Executive Director Sanela Jonuz and Pioneer’s Attorney, Dan O’Neil, appeared before the Planning Board Monday to discuss their plans to expand and move from their Summer St. location at the old Immaculate Conception School – a space they’ve occupied for 10 years – to the former Teleflex Medical building at 7-9 Plymouth St. in Everett Village. According to O’Neil, the school plans to construct a new K-8 school in existing footprint at the property, with no expansion of density, yard size, parking, setbacks or any other items. The school’s hours would be from

7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., would use between three and four buses, with most students expected to be dropped off. The move would accommodate the school’s growth plans. There are currently 360 students enrolled at Pioneer Charter’s Summer St., mostly from Everett. After the move, the school hopes to raise that figure to 540. The school is already in the process of executing a lease
with the property owners at Plymouth St., and has already completed the necessary demolition. According to O’Neill, work is “proceeding down there,� and the school is eager to submit the building plan to the city and “move on.� O’Neil stated that under the “Dover Amendment,� the city doesn’t have the right to review the project, and Pioneer

Superintendent Frederick F. Foresteire explained that the staggered reporting times for High School students in different grades will help both students and teachers cope with another record enrollment again this school year. Students in the three upper High School classes (Grades 10, 11, and 12) will be advised through the mail of their homeroom assignments for the 2017-2018 school year. report to their assigned schools by 7:45 a.m. Parents and guardians with children who have not registered for Public School Kindergarten in Everett as of that date should report to Parent Information Center at Everett High School in order to register. When that process has been completed satisfactorily, children will then be assigned to a Kindergarten program. Everett Public Schools offers a full-day Kindergarten program free of charge to children of parents who live in Everett. “In other school districts, parents are charged for their children to attend Kindergarten” Superintendent Foresteire said. “That we are still able to offer this program to Everett parents and not charge a fee is due in great part to the efforts of the committed members of our School Committee” he added. Enrollment in Everett’s fullday Kindergarten program has increased dramatically over the last several years. The Superintendent predicted that this year would be no different, and said that his staff is expecting 500 students for the 2017-2018 Kindergarten program.
PRE SCHOOL PROGRAM BEGINS FOR THREE AND FOUR YEAR OLDS The first day of school for all registered Pre School Program students will be on Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at the ADAMS and WEBSTER schools. “This is a very popular program” Superintendent Foresteire said, “and any parent who delays registering an eligible child may face a long waiting list for acceptance.” The number of three-yearold children that will be accepted in the Pre School Program will depend on how much space is available after all eligible four-year-olds have been registered and assigned schools. The Everett Public Schools Pre School Program is offered at the Webster School located at 30 Dartmouth Street and the Adams School located at 8 Tileston Street. Everett’s Pre School Program provides an opportunity for children to start learning in a formal environment. The program also offers an opportunity for children to build relationships with other children outside their families, an important social step for children who may not have had the experience of neighborhood
playmates their own age. And for children who are ready for a structured learning environment, this Pre School Program may help smooth the transition into Kindergarten. SCHOOL OPENS FOR TEACHERS MONDAY, AUGUST 29 School opens on Monday, August 29 for all teaching staff in Everett Public Schools. “Our teachers are scheduled to return one day in advance of students in order to get their classrooms organized and ready for the first day of classes” Superintendent Foresteire said. “The record enrollments in Everett Public Schools over the last several years have left no breathing room for our professional staff once school was in session” the Superintendent explained, “With another record-breaking 7,300-plus students expected this year in Everett Public Schools, we all need as much time as possible to get prepared.” Everett Public School faculty is unusual in that administrators work twelve months a year; teachers, and support staff work a school year of 189 days, with 186 student-teaching days, instead of the staterequired minimum of only

Councillors present citations to Strike Out Cancer Softball Tournament co-organizers Councillors Fred Capone and Mike McLaughlin presented citations on behalf of the City Council to the tournament co-organizers, Peter Sikora and Matt Ells. Peter and Matt were honored for their dedication, hard work and commitment in the fight to end cancer. Each of the past three years, a Strike Out Cancer Softball Tournament has been held to raise awareness. Peter’s mom, Carol, a cancer survivor, was the inspiration for the annual event. In addition to raising awareness, the organization collects donations to assist cancer patients and their families while receiving treatment. Mayor’s Capital Improvement Plan directly benefits Everett students The George Keverian School in Everett is undergoing a series of exciting and essential upgrades this summer, thanks to Mayor Carlo DeMaria’s ex-
pansive Capital Improvement Plan. When school begins later this month, Keverian students, families, teachers and staff will see a host of upgrades, chief
among them a brand-new playground with state-of-theart equipment. “In the 10 years since the Keverian was built, the school has never had its own playground, so this is a fantastic addition for our students,” said Superintendent of Schools Frederick F. Foresteire. Work crews are making a series of improvements to the exterior of the school. New paving, curbs and landscaping will adorn the front of the building. Additionally, city engineers have created a solution to a re-
curring problem of water gathering near the front and rear of the school after heavy rainfall. Finally, the work will result in more parking spaces for Keverian employees. “The cooperative manner in which city departments work together is as impressive as it is productive,” said Superintendent Foresteire. “From the Mayor and the School Committee to the City Council and City Hall, our leaders are committed to making Everett a better place to live. The Capital
Improvement Plan is a perfect example of these ongoing efforts, which are directly benefitting our students.” Work at the Keverian is being done by GTA Corporation, an Everett-based company that specializes in site work, utilities, excavation-contracting and landscape construction. Everett’s City Engineer, Julius Ofurie, has played an integral role in the successful planning and execution of the work being done at the Keverian School.

Joseph McGonagle Treats Everett Students to Red Sox Game hanks to the generosity of Everett State Representative Joseph McGonagle and a group of community donors, members of the For Kids Only Afterschool (FKO) Summer Program attended a Red Sox game at Fenway Park earlier this month. Rep. McGonagle joined approximately 40 Everett students and chaperones for this memorable night of food, fun, and baseball. For Kids Only provides after-school and summer programs for the Everett Public Schools. The outing was also made possible by the generous support of Bobby Onessimo of the Best Sausage Company and Dave Vieira of Piantedosi Baking Company, who provided food and beverages for the campers; Sal Barresi of Sal’s Cleaners, who made a donation towards the purchase of the tickets; and Marge White of Everett Bank, who purchased T-shirts for the event. Jim Sachetta turns 90 years young! well-known local musician, Jim Sachetta, recently celebrated his 90th birthday surrounded by over 150 family and friends. The party was the culmination of a weeklong celebration honoring the prominent Everett resident. Jim was born the seventh of 11 children into a family with deep Everett roots. He is proud of his civic involve-

ment, including serving as President of Everett Retired Men’s Association (ERMA) for over 20 years, his active role in Everett United and his longstanding membership in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). The IBEW recently honored Jim with a commemorative pin for his 64 years of outstanding membership in June.
His musical career began at the age of 15 as a featured drummer with large bands. Over his 75-year career, Jim has managed and operated his own band and has entertained hundreds of thousands. Ward 1 Councillor Fred Capone was on hand to present Jim with a City Citation in recognition of the special occasion.

Mayor’s 1st annual Blacktop Basketball Tournament to be held August 26 re you a basketball player looking for a new and fun way to participate in basketball? The City of Everett is pleased to announce the first annual Mayor DeMaria Blacktop Basketball Tournament. Games will tip off on Saturday, August 26 at 9:00 a.m. at Baldwin Avenue Park. The mayor is excited for this inaugural tournament to begin and hopes to create a back-to-school tradition. Students in grades 5-8 are invited to compete in a full day athletic contest. The tournament will consist of two different tiers for both boys and girls. Tier 1 is made up of 5th and 6th grade players and tier 2 is made up of 7th and 8th grade players. Each team can have up to five players. Following the tournament there will be a 3-point contest. This week, Beacon Hill Roll Call reports local senators’ roll call attendance records for the 2017 session through August 18. The Senate has held 76 roll call votes so far in 2017. We tabulate the number of roll calls on which each senator was present and voting and then calculate that number as a percentage of the total roll call votes held. That percentage is the number referred to as the roll call attendance record. In the 39-member Senate, 31 senators (82.1 percent) have 100 percent roll call attendance records. The senators who missed the most roll calls are Sens. Jennifer Flanagan (D-Leominster) and Barbara L’Italien (D-Andover), who each missed six roll calls (92.1 percent attendance); and Eileen Donoghue (D-Lowell), who missed three roll calls (96.1 percent attendance). Beacon Hill Roll Call requested a statement from those three senators. Here are their responses. Flanagan: “Unfortunately, this year I had to miss six votes out of 76 roll calls. The first four votes were missed due to work-related travel and the last
two were because of a personal family matter that kept me from attending [the] session.” L’Italien: “I was unfortunately unable to vote on six roll calls this session.” L’I talien went on to explain that there were several reasons for missing the six votes including the unexpected death off her mother on April 3; her service as a Massachusetts legislative delegate at the Government of Canada Rising State Leaders Tour; her attendance at the Women in Government Conference in Nevada; and her convening a mediation meeting between SEIU 509 and Class, Inc. to avert a large labor strike in the city of Lawrence. The Dover Amendment is a common shorthand for MGL Chapter 40A, Section 3, which exempts agricultural, religious, and educational corporations from certain zoning restrictions. In other words, it allows these corporations to build structures necessary to provide their services without reference to local rules. Pioneer had previously appeared before the board previously to request a Site Plan Review waiver, which O’Neil said they were entitled to under the law. Now, the school wanted the board to formally approve that waiver. Planners bristled at the notion that they lacked any binding review power, and urged the school to engage in a more public process with greater outreach to the neighborhood. Acting Planning Board Chair
Leo Pizzano, Jr. challenged O’Neil’s claims that the board didn’t have the right to review parking issues with the project, and initially doubted whether the school could request a Site Plan waiver. At one point, Pizzano asked whether Superintendent Fred Foresteire, who has long criticized charter schools for diverting essential funding from public schools, had reviewed the plan. took place on August 11 and 12, 2017, in Charlottesville, remind us again that what we take for granted and what we work together to attain, is a threat to the narrow ideology of too many. We adopted these words today and heard them read by our leaders. Now, I hope, as many as possible will read them and find ways, where they live and work, to strongly denounce and oppose the totalitarian impulses, violence, xenophobic biases, and bigoted ideologies.� Following the signing of the

Father of Patricia Garland and her husband Richard of Medford, Ralph Traynham and his wife Gilda of Billerica, Gary Traynham and his wife Sherry of Kennbunk, ME, Juanita Lewis of Medford, Virginia Maggio and her husband Paul of Lyman, ME and Corinne DeVito and her husband William of Arlington. Brother of Joseph Graziosi of Cape Cod, Albert “Butch” Graziosi of Everett, Corinne Hiltz of NH and the late Babe Graziosi. Also survived by 16 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
