heck out the Museo de Historia de Madrid with its beautiful Baroque entrance to a rose-coloured museum, the cavernous slightly stuffy space was once an orphanage and gives an excellent overview of the history of Madrid from the time of the Moors up to the end of the 19th century. For a more contemporary vibe, the Conde-Duque cultural centre housed in the massive 18th-century royal barracks holds fashion shows, dance, concerts and avant-garde art exhibitions. Just around the corner the stunningly stylish Museo ABC which specialises in graphic art and illustration is housed in the former Mahou brewery. Located in the Arganzuela district in the south of Madrid, Mercado Matadero is the city’s former slaughterhouse built between 1910 and 1924. The complex, an outstanding example of industrial architecture, is now one of the city’s cultural hotspots hosting cinema, photography and theatre events and an important attraction point on the newly redeveloped riverfront, Madrid Rio.

Madrid, ses murs roses et sa splendide porte de style baroque. Quelque peu étouffant par endroit, le bâtiment est un ancien orphelinat. L’exposition donne un excellent aperçu de l’histoire madrilène depuis l’époque mauresque jusqu’à la fin du 19e siècle. Une atmosphère plus contemporaine règne au centre culturel CondeDuque (ancienne caserne du 18e siècle), qui accueille des défilés de mode, des spectacles de danse, des concerts et des expositions d’art avant-gardiste. À deux pas se trouve le Museo ABC, spécialisé dans l’art graphique et l’illustration. L’élégant bâtiment est l’ancienne brasserie Mahou. Le quartier d’Arganzuela, au sud de la capitale, abrite le Mercado Matadero. Magnifique exemple d’architecture industrielle, le bâtiment construit entre 1910 et 1924 était autrefois un abattoir. Aujourd’hui, le complexe est l’un des hauts lieux de la culture : sa programmation cinématographique, photographique et théâtrale en fait un pôle d’attraction majeur du renouveau des berges, dans le cadre du projet Madrid Rio.
