PARTIES AND FESTIVALS PROGRAMME 2007

The cultural capital commences While it would be impossible to mention every event that w ill occur within the framework of the 2007 programme, a peek at a few of the ________________________ highlights offers the public some idea of the diversity and scope of the activities planned.

On 2 October, in the presence of Octavie Modert, Secretary of State for Culture, and Paul Helminger, Luxem­ bourg City Mayor, the planning com­ mittee for Luxembourg and the Greater Region, European Capital of Culture 2007 revealed some of the highlights of the festival’s programme as well as the agenda for the official Opening Party on 9 December 2006. The Opening Party will set the tone for the entire year starting with a 6pm rendezvous at the Place de la Gare and le Chant des Sirènes featuring Luxem­ bourg musician André Mergenthaler and his Cello Loops. A carnival atmos­ phere will ensue with a parade includ­ ing the fabulous Plasticiens Volants

and fireworks marking the passage of day into night. After 9pm the evening cranks up a notch with both of the Rotundas vibrating to the rhythm of all manner of music - fusion, groove, elec­ tro, world music - and more. To boost energy levels there w ill be a Village gastronomique du monde set up between the two Rotundas especially as the City has granted a nuit blanche (all-night licence) for the occasion. PARTIES FOR ALL SEASONS The Opening Party is just the start. There are parties planned for all sea­ sons: A Spring Festival in the Grund, a Festival of Music in June vibrating throughout the Greater Region, an
