Cloud computing Excuse me for being a bit backward, but what exactly is the ‘cloud’? It sounds like off-site IT with a fancy name. And what happens if someone, in that magical information land, trips over the cord? The cloud makes an already murky realm even more anomalous.

The occupy movement OK, you made your point; unchecked corporate greed destroyed lives and nearly ruined our rather imperfect world. But dressing like hippies and camping in public spaces for weeks on end isn’t really helping change anything; it’s actually obstructing progress and is now just annoying.

Greek bailouts Well knock me over with a feather – a nation with a lax attitude to taxation that used the Euro zone’s triple A credit rating to borrow more than it could afford is in financial strife. Fact is, Greece has defaulted on its external sovereign debt obligations at least five previous times in the modern era (1826, 1843, 1860, 1894 and 1932). Whether it’s horrendous fiscal miss-management, or simply cooking the books, we’re sick of hearing about it.

Strategic planning and management has moved from highly analytical operations to that of using a more inclusive, creative, thinking process that actively engages all stakeholders and individuals within the company.

Don’t just plan – think

This move recognises that people who are actively involved in the business and care about their organisation, can and do make valuable contributions to planning the company’s future.

My advice to CEO’s is; step back from the day-to-day tactical details of the business and focus on the “why”, not just the “what” and “how”.

The objectives are to find, develop and leverage competitive advantages that will enhance and sustain a company’s position and long term viability.

Savers and investors still getting it wrong Alan Clarke is an authorised financial adviser with 24 years experience in the finance sector

It is well known, or should be, that successful savers and investors “buy in gloom and sell in boom”.

Yet right now fear abounds, with too many Kiwisavers in cash funds, and investors are scurrying to their banks, or sticking their money under the bedcovers.

The question is maybe - why you would invest outside cash or banks? The answer is probably “needs must”. A conservative to balanced portfolio over time is likely to make two percent more per year than a deposit at a bank.

So $100,000 at two percent pa more than cash/bank equals $2,000 pa.

Not much?

What about $2,000 pa over 20 years equals $40,000 more than cash in a bank! Most people, especially when retired, need this extra return.

Just as it would be wrong to assume all is now fine in the global economy, investors would have been just as wrong to listen to the media in December and January, and miss out on the good opening returns in 2012.

However a prudent person might say “I want to feel my way rather than jumping in” - fair comment.

There is a simple strategy that every investor can use - “dollar cost averaging”. Invest progressively at say $200, $500, $5,000 per month, or $1,000, $5,000, $10,000 every three months. There are lots of variations of this strategy can be used.

Every investor should, at the outset, establish his or her risk profile and then use an asset allocation (the proportions of bonds to shares) and stick to it. A conservative to balanced investor might be 60 percent in bonds and 40 percent in shares.

Some people prefer do-it-yourself, but research shows that DIY investors in the US from 1998 to 2008 made 3.9 percent pa, whereas holding the top 500 shares (the S& P 500) made nine percent pa (Dalbar Research).

That’s right, by just holding the market, some investors made double what the active DIY investor made.

Then when markets rise they can take profits by rebalancing – a variation of “selling in boom”. Remember too that the 60 percent in bonds is low risk (actually very low risk the way we do it).

Research indicates that no one can consistently forecast markets, exchange rates, economic events, or pick shares/stocks.

There are plenty of people around who infer that they can, with glossy brochures and sometimes lots of (not so easy to see) fees.

2012 forecasts and reality The general view expressed by the media in December and January was “buckle up, 2012 promises scant comfort for investors”. Yet markets in 2012 have opened strongly.

Why such a good start? Europe can hardly be described as being out of the woods, but various creditor agreements over Greece has eased nerves. Recently Spain and Italy have been able to borrow at lower interest rates than in late 2011, a sign that the big institutions and lenders think things are getting better.

In the US data shows signs of a turnaround with an improvement in employment, manufacturing orders and a climb in consumer confidence. In addition US companies and many others around the world reacted to the global credit crunch by cutting every cost they could. Many are now “lean and mean” and more profitable than they have been for 30 years. Not so well known is that US companies are prudently holding over $2 trillion in cash (that’s trillions, not billions).

Your trademark is potentially one of your most valuable business assets – the ability to use it, unimpeded, is something many of us take for granted. Yet, if you have not registered your trade mark – your brand name, then you leave yourself wide open for someone else to swipe it from underneath you. In this article I will shed light on some of the myths and misconceptions that exist around trademarks.

Every trademark must distinguish a service or product from those provided by other traders.

Because the word bakery is a descriptive and generic term, so you cannot register it and prevent others using it. You also cannot register as a trademark a geographical location, common surnames or superlatives, such as beautiful, best or greatest. For example, you could not register Whangarei Bakery, Smiths’ Bakery or The Freshest Bakery.

To uniquely distinguish your product or service from others, invented words can be used or standard words that have no relationship to the goods/services. If you had registered a mark for tennis rackets, you would be able to stop someone using the same name on tennis balls. On the other hand, if a coffee shop tried to register that same name – they possibly could, as there is no way the consumer will think that they are related.

Emotional-health goals must be your priority

With the start of the year, many companies would have acquired a number of younger employees.

The bad news is they will only keep getting younger as they come into your industry. The good news is that this generation can be one of the easiest to deal with… when you know how to.

The fact they are younger means they can be quicker at doing tasks, because of one key element: their energy.

Many employers I’ve talked to credit quality and pace of work of younger employees to the energy, they have to keep going. The question is: how can you find this potential energy, and gear it towards meeting your workplace’s goals and work load?

Here are a few thoughts around how you can keep the company’s younger employees’ productivity intact over the year.

Set targets Many times, I consult with companies where their younger people are under-utilised because they can sometimes perform and adapt new skills faster than other employees.

In the past, perhaps you’ve noticed some of them ‘slacking off’ while they claim all their work is ‘finished’, or they’re ‘on track’.

Having said that, if you can allow for some extra leeway during the year, give these as rewards for target achievement, or recognition. An example could be, to give them an extra 10 or 15 minutes lunch break. It might sound simple, but they will appreciate the ‘gift’.

4. Reassess your happiness at work.

This is must for those in negative work culture that’s leaving them feeling overworked, uncertain of their future, anxious or stressed.

It’s important to know that as an employee you can address the issue with your manager.

If you know you can’t, it may be time to look for a healthier work environment.

5. Review your daily routine.

It takes courage to admit there are decisions we ourselves make that deflate us emotionally – from accepting a job with a long work commute, to running around too much, to not giving ourselves enough ‘down’ time every day, to spending too much and putting ourselves in financial stress. By resolving to develop a strategy to solve them, you can be in an entirely different place by the end of 2012. And you’ll be glad for it.

6. Don’t let any negative emotions control you.

Managing the connected consumer John Walsh is Professor of Marketing at IMD

Companies have often grappled with the ‘ownership’ of their brands. Ultimately, the brand is simply what it represents in the minds of consumers.

Strong brands generate strong emotions and consumers can have a real sense of ownership – and an equal willingness to criticise decisions that affect that brand in ways that they do not like. When The CocaCola Company tinkered with its formula and introduced New Coke in the mid-80s, the subsequent uproar from consumers forced a u-turn.

It used to be said that consumers having a negative experience with a brand might tell as many as 10 people, whereas those with positive experiences might tell only as few as three. In other words, negative word of mouth spreads faster than the positive. The advent of the internet and various social media facilitates opinionated consumers to exchange ideas and influence others. Word of mouth has been turbo charged. Opinions reach billions.

Consumers have formed a collective. They have unionised.

The free-flowing exchange of information, the inter-connectedness of consumers, has changed the marketplace. Now, the market bears many of the characteristics of an organisation, albeit a loosely formed one. The famous u-turn imposed on Coke by its consumers stands out as a rare, iconic moment in marketing history, when consumers exerted control over the legal brand owner. It will be less of a rarity in the future.

Thinking of how we manage employees might help us as we grapple with the new phenomenon of the connected consumer.

Managing customers 1. Communication The connected consumer places high demands on the brands they buy and are not afraid to ridicule communications that are inconsistent or poorly thought through. A brief scan of YouTube illustrates the point – countless usergenerated parodies of advertisements are available, with many viewed much more than the original.

2. Motivation What motivates consumers to buy or to be loyal to a brand is even more important nowadays. As the number of touch-points between the brand and the consumer proliferate, it is important that the messaging from the brand is consistent with the motivations of the consumer.

3. Delegation Many companies are already involving the connected consumer in a variety of interesting ways. Companies are now co-creating products and solutions with consumers.

The key issue, as with the case of managing employees, is what to delegate to consumers and what to keep for determination by management. Involving consumers in even the most simple of decisions can have unintended consequences; such as customers selecting a model or direction that doesn’t reflect a company’s ‘image’.

It can also be used as a way of providing news about your company or general news about your industry.

5. Learn from mistakes, openly Good managers learn from their mistakes and the same is true when dealing with connected consumers. Marketing-savvy companies have grappled with the impact of Facebook, Twitter etc., where opinion, whether ill-informed or ill-intentioned, can flow freely.

Allow the ability for people to add comments to your blog as this just increases customer engagement.

6. Fairness Nobody likes to be treated unfairly and the connected consumer can be quite vocal if he perceives an injustice. However, fair need not necessarily mean equal. Consumers can be valuable to companies because they buy large volumes and perhaps those who buy more should receive a lower per unit price. However, even consumers who do not purchase much might be of great value because they can, for example, refer other customers to a brand, give positive reviews, provide suggestions for improvements etc, and this value should be rewarded.

Blogging really is a great way to interact and engage with your customers and potential customers online. If you send out newsletters a good idea is to add some introduction text to your blog topic and then link to your website so that it can be read in full.

The other reason why it is important to have a blog on your site is because it helps with the visibility of your website in search engines such as Google. Basically, search engines love fresh content on a site and monitor the frequency of content updates.

This means having a blog is a great way to have regular, new content showing on your site.

Having quality and informative blog entries also means that you increase your likelihood of building backlinks to the blog itself. And this, from a search engine optimisation perspective, is an all important part of helping to make your site more visible to search engines.

If you include reference to your products or services, then you should include a link to the relevant section of your website so readers can find out more.

If you do decide to have a blog on your site and follow the above tips the results will speak for themselves.

Is social media worth the effort?

Thousands of companies have jumped aboard the social media movement, as it allows you to reach out and engage with a wider audience than you perhaps could with offline forms of marketing. This in turn can help with driving more business. Think of it as the modern day version of ‘word-of-mouth’.

Friends or followers are easily able to give feedback on products or services and feedback is valuable to a business. If it’s bad feedback you can work to fix the problem, if it’s good you can thank people accordingly.

There are so many people in New Zealand and across the world that you might not normally have the opportunity to reach out to. Social media allows businesses to do this relatively easily through a few simple Facebook posts or Tweets.

Great customer service is key to creating a great company. If someone expresses a problem with a product or service via social media platforms, you can engage with them in real time to try and resolve the issue, before too much bad ‘word of mouth’ gets out.

Businesses need to be aware of what is happening in their industry and what competitors are doing - social media allows you to track the competition.

Getting started on social media may be quite daunting at first but it can soon become fun and develop into an integral part of your marketing plan.

If you do have a blog, or decide to integrate one into your website, it is important to blog regularly – once a month at a minimum. Of course this can raise time issues for busy business people, so, rather than take on the task yourself, why not ask other staff members to contribute to the blog as well.

When writing a blog try and remember to include keywords - these are the words that people are likely to use when looking for your product or service online. This will help with allowing your blog to show in search results for relevant search queries.

Another tip is to try not to include too much jargon or industry terminology, particularly if your target audience is not likely to understand what you are talking about.

MONDAY, APRIL 23 A study of peoples’ worst fears placed death at number seven. It seems we find at least six things to be far worse than death, with the most feared of all being speaking to a group.

Countless surveys and studies over the years have placed the fears in different order, but the number one fear never changes – fear of public speaking. The vast majority of professional roles involve some level of public speaking, from participating in meetings to giving presentations to clients.

It’s rare for a professional to divulge this fear to their employers so it goes undetected and untreated, with the result being ongoing inferior performance in this area, or complete avoidance of the situation. It is quite common for someone to call in sick on the day of a presentation.

One size does not fit all when it comes to treating this problem. It’s essential to look beneath the fear and find the contributing factors. One common contributor is the loathing many sufferers have of being looked at or being the focus of attention.

Underneath this will be yet another contributing factor, often the fear of being judged or falling short of the task. Underpinning this will be the core issue, which will be unique to the individual, as we all have different life experiences. Often the only way to find it is to seek professional help.

If you prefer to self diagnose, one of the best ways is to ask yourself “why” five times.

For instance: Why am I feeling this way about speaking to this group?

Of course this is a very simplistic way of looking at it and the human psyche is rarely simplistic. Often there are multiple core issues.

Sometimes the core issue is a time we have failed in front of other people in the past, often in childhood.

A memory from childhood can seem unimportant in adulthood and often carries no obvious emotion when it’s brought to mind, but the complex human brain can make connections at a subconscious level.

The thought of speaking to a group can subconsciously trigger emotions connected with that event, impacting on the ability to speak effectively, or at all.

For many it is not something as obvious as having given a poor speech in childhood. Far more common with sufferers is a situation in the past when they got something wrong and everyone looked at them. The feelings of embarrassment and humiliation remain in the subconscious mind waiting to be triggered by the next time they are looked at by a group of people. That ‘group of people’ may be any situation where more than one person is present.

If more than 40 percent of people rank their worst fear as speaking to a group, it’s likely that someone in your workforce is hampered by it, and if they are hampered by it so is your business.

In a professional environment people are generally unwilling to admit to this fear.

According to Mark Twain however; “There are two types of speakers: those that are nervous and those that are liars.”

We happily express love for our partners, family, friends, pets, even our neighbours…well some of them. Some people love being outdoors, some people love rugby and some people love cake - our capacity to love is extremely vast. So why is love often missing from the workplace?

If you find yourself looking at your career and wishing you were on a path you felt more passionate and energised about, then here are six ways to love the job you may be starting to loathe.

1. Love the team We all find some people easier to work with than others. Consider the people you don’t get on with as easily - try and find out what motivates them, what they value in life and in work, understand their goals and objectives as they probably differ from yours. When we understand people it becomes easier to connect and collaborate because we treat each other with respect.

Very few people come to work to do a bad job, so find out what is driving them.

2. State your needs Personal values are not being met? How well do the team and your employer understand you? Tell them what is important to you, be open and honest - be willing to accept your mistakes and ask for help when you need it.

3. Be yourself Many people say they act very different at home compared to how they behave at work. When we are playing different roles like this, we are not being fully authentic and can come across as fake. Relax and be yourself – its less hard work than trying to be someone else!

4. Turn up your strengths Consider where you excel - how can you do this even more? For example, if one of your traits is to be enthusiastic, try being enthusiastic in a situation that normally drags you down. Look at the positives and stop looking at the negatives for a change.

5. Focus on the things you can do Where can you improve your job? What can you delegate? Do the things you don’t like doing first each day so that you reduce the amount of time spent analysing over them.

Review your workload on a weekly and monthly basis. Where are you focusing your energy? Where would you like to focus your energy? Consider what needs to be dropped in order to do the things you really want to.

6. Stop focusing on the money Money will never be enough so stop using it as an excuse. Whatever salary you are bringing home - there is always going to be things you could do or would do if you had more. Getting paid is only one small part of what you do; your work has to be more than just a paycheck to be fulfilling.

With a messy economic situation in the EU, Kiwi businesses are tightening their belts as the prospect of another recession looms. All this means pay rises are not something many companies feel they can afford right now.

You might think for staff it’s all about the money, but studies have continually shown that staff members often rate a fair salary as just one of the ingredients in workplace happiness. In fact, its job satisfaction and a feeling of harmony and happiness in the workplace that employees are after. Here are some tips on how to look after your staff when the money is tight.

Keep the social club going Quiz nights, fun runs, guess the baby picture contests, regular Friday drinks – they are all ways of helping people relax and connect.

Offer “duvet days” for hard work If you can’t reward your staff with money, try giving them some R&R time. For example, a staff member landing a new account could be given a day off of their choice. Studies have shown that a day of relaxing recharges the batteries beautifully, making your staff even better employees when they return.

Offer more training This shows staff you are willing to invest in them and gives them the chance to expand their potential. They feel challenged and supported at work, and that’s something money can’t buy.

Praise and recognition Honestly thanking a staff member for going above and beyond, for meeting all their deadlines, etc can mean the world to them.

It doesn’t take you very long to say it, but it would be the highlight of their day.

Lead from the top If everyone’s on a pay freeze because of the recession, don’t turn up in your new flash car.

This will make your employees feel worthless and then morale and productivity will suffer.

illusion If you haven’t seen Meet the Feebles, watch it.

As funny as it is low budget, as entertaining as it is repulsive, this 1989 black comedy about the twisted life of a group of puppets involves pornography, drugs and suicide.

By Bridget Gourlay It’s a bit of early work from one of New Zealand’s greatest film makers, Peter Jackson, with the creative work of a young group of New Zealand artists including Weta Workshop founder Richard Taylor. Quite simply, it’s an example of how raw talent and tenacity make a good film, even if there’s almost no money behind it.

It was the first opportunity for Taylor to work with this unique New Zealand film maker.

Splatter flicks, the brilliant mockumentary Forgotten Silver and the critically acclaimed Heavenly Creatures followed. Then the coup d’etat; persuading Hollywood to let Peter tackle Tolkien’s epic trilogy, The Lord of the Rings, in New Zealand. The rest, as they say, is history. The movies were New Zealand’s biggest film project and the smash hit that turned the team (and the rest of the gang of talented artists), into some of the best-known film makers in the world.

Weta Workshop (and its sister company Weta Digital which creates digital effects) emerged from this success. The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, King Kong, District 9 and Avatar are just some of the films worked on by Weta Workshop, run by Richard Taylor and his wife Tania, from their Miramar studio.

Weta Workshop – which had its origins in the Taylors’ 1987 flat – now employs more than 150 people and services the creative needs of clients all around the world.

The big budget movies that sit alongside the smaller NZ films that Richard works on now are a far cry from the smell-of-an-oily rag affairs he toiled away on back in the 80s. But it’s that spark he once exhibited that he looks for in his Weta Workshop team.

We’re in the middle, Richard believes, of a digital revolution. For anyone, getting their hands on the basic equipment needed to make their own short films is easy and inexpensive. Then there’s YouTube, “the great leveller”.

Weta Workshop is usually thought of as creating props for movies but will turn its hand to most things. It publishes books, creates sculptures and museum displays and has a partnership in China producing chainmail armor for films.

Richard Taylor moved to Wellington for the Massey design course when he finished school, and it has been his home ever since.

Anyone can put a clip online and its popularity determines what goes to the top. Take Grammy winner Adele, who was discovered after clips of her were posted on MySpace or teen heartthrob Justin Bieber who was discovered on YouTube.

“We’re watching mind boggling imagery that has been created for almost no budget by just innovative thought, by people that are utilising very inexpensive technology and their talents.

“We have the great fortune of working with directors that come through the internet generation and are now making a huge impact at a creative film level. That’s very exciting because it allows all of us to see the latest talents coming through and we can watch and learn from them.”

Great film makers don’t have to attend expensive film schools; a good short film with hundreds of hits is something Richard and the Weta team look forward to.

“Very few people here have a tertiary education in what they actually do on the workshop floor. We are happy to find people that have been doing their own thing in their bedrooms or workshops at home, than necessarily having done a tertiary course that gives them a set of skills - but not necessarily the inventive and exploratory skills we’re looking for in someone’s work.”

Richard and Tania have always been passionate about children’s TV and that’s what led to the creation of Pukeko Pictures. The company’s hugely popular shows Jane and the Dragon and The Wot-Wots have taken off. The latter is now playing in 90 countries, including most of China.

“It’s reached a huge part of the world’s population, getting to China is beyond our wildest imaginings of five years ago,” Richard says.

Best of all, his own children are big fans and he admits he and Tania get a buzz out of creating content his children can watch and enjoy.

The capital, unlike so many others such as Canberra, is not just the home of dour faced civil servants but is a cultural and artistic haven.

“We’ve been here 28 years now and I’ve come to love Wellington and couldn’t imagine running a creative company anywhere else in the world,” Richard reflects.

The big picture Exporting in 2012; what’s hot and what’s not

Exporting has been a crucial part of New Zealand’s economy since colonisation. It was our whale oil that lit the lamps of 18th century Paris and our lamb served at the dinner table of posh Victorian households.

But since then our exports, and our markets, have changed dramatically. These days it’s dairy to Asia, meat to the Middle East and education, manufactured goods and wine to the world.

Bridget Gourlay scans a critical eye over foreign markets to look at what’s hot and what’s not in 2012 and beyond.

Asia Asia is our exporting buzzword – it’s a heady mix of emerging middle classes starting to demand products we specialise in on an ever-growing scale. It’s possible to eat a New Zealand Natural ice cream in Singapore, or a slice of Hell’s Pizza in Seoul.

Make no mistake, China and India are the big two. Our FTA with China was originally projected to lift New Zealand’s export revenue from trade with the country by between NZ$225-$350 million per year. Far exceeding expectations, in the first year of implementation New Zealand exports to China increased by NZ$1 billion to $3.5 billion. This success has also meant China has eclipsed the USA and become our second largest export market. New Zealand exports in 2010 totalled $4.83 billion, up a staggering 33 percent on 2009.

Talks are underway for a free trade agreement with the other booming Asian economy, India. Currently the world’s 10th largest economy, its growing middle class and a youthful and increasingly well educated population offers a plethora of opportunities.

Two-way trade is worth more than $1.2 billion per year and India has become our third-largest source of international students and 10th largest source of visitors. However, other markets offer an array of opportunity.

With the recently-signed ASEAN (AustraliaNew Zealand Free Trade Area) agreement, we have better access to a number of growing and vibrant economies, such as Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. In all of these Asian countries, it’s food and beverages, high tech manufacturing and education that are doing well.

Although ‘quality’ is the most important United States purchase driver, attributes that relate to sustainability often strongly suggest quality to United States consumers, with some willing to pay up to 10 percent more for more ‘sustainable’ products.

Support ideas If a teammate suggests something, always consider it – even if it’s not the best idea you’ve ever heard. Considering the group’s input shows you’re interested in other people’s ideas, not just your own.

Boasting It’s one thing to rejoice in your successes with the group, but don’t act like a hero. Doing this will make others regret your personal successes and may create tension within the group. You don’t have to boast to let people know you’ve done a good job - have faith that people will recognise when good work is being done.

Listen Look at the person who’s speaking to you and make eye contact. If you’re unclear about something that’s been said, ask for more information to clear up any confusion before moving on. Effective communication is a vital part of any team, so the value of good listening skills shouldn’t be underestimated.

Get involved Share suggestions, ideas, solutions and proposals with your team members. Take the time to help your fellow teammates, no matter the request. You can guarantee there will be a time in the future when you’ll need some help or advice. And if you’ve helped them in past, they’ll be more than happy to lend a helping hand.

The internet age is truly upon us. Booking a flight, buying tickets to a show, checking the bus timetable, communicating with overseas friends… it’s hard to imagine all those things were once done in person, on the phone, or even (hilariously) by letter.

The internet age has even permeated the shopping world. It seems unlikely people would buy items like clothes and shoes online, but figures show online shopping has been sky-rocketing.

In fact, some retailers exist entirely in cyberspace –no shop, no browsing, no sales assistants. New Zealand business www.felt.co.nz is one of them. It’s an easy to navigate website which sells handmade crafts. Paintings, necklaces, toys, there’s a veritable host of items for sale made by sellers from around the country that can be purchased at the click of a button. Bridget Gourlay talks to founder Lucy Arnold about the concept.

When did you start up Felt?

I began it in 2007. There was a site called etsy.com in America, which started the year before I did, and I was selling on it. It wasn’t really set up well for New Zealand sellers and I saw that New Zealand could benefit from something similar to it. I guess it’s like eBay and Trade Me. I found other people to list their crafts on Felt by just talking to people at crafts markets, looking online and going through craft blogs. It was just a matter of finding people and emailing them.

How successful has Felt been over the last five years– have you been getting good sales?

We’ve doubled in size every year. I wouldn’t want it to grow any faster than that as that would get unmanageable!

How exactly does it work? How do you make a cut of it?

It works like Trade Me. Sellers have a pre-paid account and Felt gets a fee every time they make a sale, plus a five percent commission which gets deducted from their pre-paid account. I don’t really sell anything myself on there any more – I’m too busy running it!

That must make it easy for both Felt and a seller to test the waters.

Yes. We’ve got 2500 sellers. Some sell a lot, but they usually have their own websites and are at craft stalls, sell into shops and galleries, sell on Trade Me and Etsy as well. Others are medium sized and some are just getting started. Felt is just a tool really.

Do you think there’s a growing market for NZ-made things?

People are recognising, especially with the recession, that it’s important to support local people - its money going back to our economy. There’s been a backlash against the global brands, buying local is bringing a human link to shopping, and with Felt people do like a direct contact with the seller.

With the online aspect - are people prepared to buy things they haven’t seen/ touched?

There is some hesitation still. New Zealand lags behind the rest of the world in online shopping. Hesitation depends on the product, some sell really well such as jewellery. It’s easy to see what it looks like, but clothes are much harder, people want to try those on.

People are becoming more savvy, both the buyers and the sellers – buyers know what websites to trust - the internet isn’t seen as a dodgy thing anymore.

How do you advertise?

My advertising is largely done through Facebook and Twitter – I’ve got a lot of followers. Firstly I just advertised to the crafts community because I needed sellers, but now Felt is really well known in the crafts community – it’s a household name. I’m now focusing on making it more mainstream.

I have started to buy some ads in niche magazines that target my core market – women, aged 20-40 who are mums and/ or professionals. We are at craft markets and things like the Women’s Expo. But largely sales come from word of mouth.

Are there just New Zealand sellers?

What advice would you give someone starting up their own online shopping business?

I’d say 95 percent of my sellers are New Zealand-based, but there are a few from overseas such as Australia.

Don’t expect to make money really fast! It’s quick to get a business up and going online but it takes time for the profits to come in.

The person charged with her murder was a 19 year old male.

We can only refer to him as ‘the accused’. The accused was granted interim aname suppression until 18th April 2012.

He was on bail at the time and was facing charges for kidnapping Christie just a couple of months before her death.

The judge gave the accused bail after what he had done, despite strong police opposition. It is said that the police showed the judge a Google map to illustrate he was placing the accused just 350m from Christie’s home.

Christie was terrified for her life.

It is alleged that when he turned up to Christie’s home early that morning, the accused brutally stabbed her. Christie bled to death in her mother’s arms.

The shock of Christie’s murder has resulted in an unprecedented public response and community action.

Since her death, Christie’s devastated parents, Tracey and Brian Marceau have been working with friends and the Sensible Sentencing Trust to launch the petition.

Christie’s Law petition was launched earlier this week on Monday, outside the High Court in Auckland. Over 1,000 people gathered to show their support.

Unfortunately, we can’t turn the clock back, but imagine if this petition had been around 6 months ago and we had got 500,000 signatures. The politicians and judges would have sat up and listened to the voice of the people.

Imagine if there was a public outcry because our bail laws have failed so many, like Augustine Borelle and Aalyagh Morrissey who was just a toddler. They too were murdered by violent offenders who were granted bail.

Let us not forget Vanessa Pickering.

The man who killed Vanessa was not long out of prison when he raped a woman only to be granted bail.

And now, there’s Christie.

Christie’s alleged killer has been charged with her murder, however Garth McVicar believes the judge’s decision placed the accused right back into our community and subsequently cost Christie her life. The judge has never been held responsible for his actions.

Our petition aims to change that and make judges accountable for their actions.

Judges are not above the law.

We believe New Zealanders have the right to be safe. The vulnerable have the right to be protected.

Did you know that 5,082 people were convicted for failing to answer Court bail orders in 2007? These are the latest figures supplied by the Minister of Justice after an Official Information Request. 1,313 of those people committed another crime while on bail. Christie is the latest victim.

If you believe something needs to be done about our failed bail laws, here is your chance, for Christie’s sake.

So what can you do to help?

MAKING CHANGES TO BAIL We are asking that police be given the power to appeal a judge’s decision to grant bail. This would automatically move the application to a higher court.

We want you to support making the following amendments to the Bail Act: • No bail for defendants with a criminal history for an offence involving violence, which attracts a sentence of two years or more linked to; • No bail for any person accused of an offence involving serious violence as defined in the three strikes legislation.

We also want you to support the reintroduction of meaningful bail bonds (not the current NO bond system that’s costing the tax payer over $300m per year): • NO bond, NO bail.

• An automatic and immediate inquiry after every serious bail breach, similar to a police inquiry after a police shooting.

• The views of the victims of any violent offence are given paramount consideration.

MAKING CHANGES TO JUDICIARY At present, judges are a law unto themselves.

There is no monitoring of them and they are not accountable for their decisions.

This petition calls for an annual, publicly available performance review of judges, with the right of public recall on those proven to be consistently below par or found guilty of exposing the public to undue risk.

Amsterdam

I know what you’re thinking. Amsterdam is almost a homonym for vice; when tourists visit they think sex, drugs and…well, more sex and drugs. But it’s totally unfair to put Holland’s beautiful capital into that box.

The lively city is easily one of the prettiest in Europe with far more on offer than its reputation suggests.

As a Kiwi wandering the streets, there are a number of things that are startling. Firstly, the well-known licentiousness of Amsterdam is done, by and large, by tourists. They’re the ones tripping on acid (now illegal) or smoking pot (cracked down on) and comprise the majority who indulge in the, uh, services of the girls in the red light district.

Just as puzzlingly funny is the church smackbang in the middle of the red-light district, where historically sailors would arrive and buy, in advance, absolutions for the sins they would commit that night.

Why in advance? Well, there wasn’t always time to confess about a lustful night the next morning with a hangover before the ship left port, so the sailors would get the soulcleansing stuff out of the way first. I suppose it’s the thought that counts.

Another quirky part of Amsterdam’s architectural charm are the rows of houses built on a slight tilt with a pole sticking out at the top. It makes sense. If you’re moving into your nice new canal house, getting heavy furniture into the home and up several flights of narrow stairs would be nearly impossible, so people use the pole to levy up their furniture.

One of Amsterdam’s most famous residents was Anne Frank, the young Jewish girl who hid with her family above her father’s work during the Nazi occupation of Holland. I read her diary several times as a teenager and visiting the cramped annex where the Franks and Van Dams lived is chilling.

The museum dedicated to her shows several photos taken of the family, characters that are so alive and brassy in your head it’s funny to see pictures of the real life people - but worse to know that everyone except for Otto was killed. Anne’s photos are the most poignant.

Her bright brown eyes are cheeky and brilliantly alive; and she is so beautiful in the way that all young teenagers are, just on the cusp of adulthood.

For the people of Amsterdam, these are just the activities that go on around them - although they’re fighting to keep them legal and available with a more conservative government in power.

We had to check out the red light district and I must say, don’t go there during the day.

Maybe it’s because the women look more alluring at night, or maybe it’s what the tour guide assured us - the more attractive, thus more expensive, girls work nights. But day-time the red light girls were a shock in a different way than what I expected; overweight and grumpy, their preening in the glass mirrors was half-hearted to say the least. As soon as they saw we were tourists and not customers, they quickly went back to their texting or reading.

Museums The other famous museum is dedicated to Dutch painter Vincent Van Gough, which holds the biggest collection of his paintings in the world. If museums are your thing, then Amsterdam is the right place. I think marketing itself as the bizarre museum city is the way it can break out of its ‘sex and drugs’ reputation.

There’s the tulip museum, the torture museum, the sex museum (not to be confused with the nearby erotica museum) and finally the hash, marijuana, and hemp museum. Glasses-wearers may enjoy the spectacles museum, smokers the pipe museum and chess fanatics can visit the – you guessed it - chess museum. The morbid will enjoy the death museum or perhaps the Vrolik collection where abnormal biology (we’re talking deformed body parts and foetuses) are on display. Seriously, I couldn’t make this stuff up. It just has to be seen to be believed.

They call it the expansive pathway to the heavens - Te Ara Whanui ki te Rangi – not one found in your three-year-old’s bedtime fairytale, but at the top of the red cable car line in Wellington’s Botanic Garden. As you walk through the Carter Observatory’s expansive planetarium and galleries, you are taken on a trip of a lifetime, through the beauty of space.

Reaching for the stars is no longer just for the wealthy, who can afford a trip into space’s orbit, but for every person with a love of astronomy.

The standard experience at Carter begins with a 45 minute planetarium viewing, followed by a self-guided walk through its multi-media exhibit.

Carter was built thanks to the generous donation of Waiarapa business man Charles Rooking Carter who gifted £2,240 towards the establishment of an astronomy facility in Wellington. “He wanted his contribution to benefit all New Zealanders,” says Dawn

With a full-domed planetarium, you can truly get lost in the vastness of space, through a space show and live presentation. Carter marketing and communications manager Dawn Muir says the galleries and exhibits offer a unique look at the story of the skies above New Zealand, told through the images of the universe.

From the effect of space flight on the human body, to wild space weather, and a unique look at the Wellington skies, one hour in the planetarium will provide viewers with an escape from reality.

“We hope visitors will gain a new perspective on their own place in space,” Dawn says.

“When you appreciate the vastness of outer space you may also gain a new appreciation for just how small our own planet is and how precious we are to each other.”

Building began in 1938, just before the start of WWII, but as the war escalated its completion was delayed. The Carter Observatory finally opened in December of 1941, and served as the national observatory from 1977 until May 2010.

In 2005, a research paper by Professor Mike Bessel prompted the development of the observatory into a high-quality visitor attraction, with education and research facilities. A $4.2 million reinvigorated refit of the observatory, which was paid for by council and central government, saw the observatory reopen its doors to the public in March 2010.

Since its rebirth Dawn says, about 48,000 people have walked through its exhibits each year. “We are expecting our 100,000th visitor in April or May this year.”

Space for hire

Through the multi-media exhibits it tells the tales of both the Maori and European stories of New Zealand’s southern skies and how these stars were used for navigation.

Navigators, such as Captain James Cook would have used the angle of the sun or a star to navigate through the oceans.

Carter has three telescope viewing domes and its late night viewings are very popular. The main telescope used for public viewings is the Thomas Cooke Refractor, the oldest working one of its kind in New Zealand, which was built in 1867.

The observatory is also a versatile corporate venue. Businesses wanting to jazz up a function can hire the planetarium for events of up to 150 people, be it a business function, an evening of cocktails, a conference, a dining tour, networking events, a reunion or an awards night. Space exploration can be anyone’s game.

Maori legends Carter Observatory has maintained its ties with the Maori culture and community, as is reflected throughout much of its exhibits.

Its affinity with the Tangata Whenua of the Wellington region was highlighted with the gifting of its Maori name.

“We have taken a bicultural stance throughout the exhibition,” Dawn says. “I think in the minds of the people behind Carter’s renaissance it’s what makes us unique, having the story of the New Zealand skies in our gallery, along with Maori cosmology.”

Ranginui and Papatuanuku is one of the myths featured in this exhibition, with their story as the sky father and the earth mother who lay in a tight embrace until their children force them apart creating the world in-between. The Maori legend of Maui also features strongly here in the story of Maui taming the Sun, reflecting the important role Maui played not just in New Zealand, but throughout various Pacific nations.

Maori cosmology and Matariki – the Maori New Year – is also recognised and celebrated, through its exhibits and through the live presentations given by staff in the planetarium around the same time.

Matariki is translated as either tiny eyes or eyes of God, which either way is thought to be the eyes which watch over the land and its people. It is seen in the north eastern, pre-dawn sky, in late May or early June, marking the start of a new phase of life.

In ancient times it arrived at the end of the harvest and signalled a time of plenty for the ancient Maori.

Carter curator, Gordon Hudson says, the Cooke Refractor is for planetary viewing enabling visitors to look at things mainly within our solar system.

As well as the Cooke Refractor, the observatory also has a Boller Chivens Telescope used mainly for research, and an old Grubb telescope which despite being made in 1882 is still in good working condition.

For those wishing to stargaze, telescope viewings are available on designated late nights on Tuesdays and Saturdays – but keep an eye out on the weather as this can affect a viewing.

Builders, building merchants, DIY’ers and home owners are all able to use Prenail Systems services and supplies. “They can contact us direct or go to a merchant, architect or group housing business with a plan, we will then give a quote for all of their requirements, for example frames, trusses or hySPAN,” acting manager Linda Hirini says.

Quotes are normally with customers after five working days and a delivery date within 15 working days after receiving final plans.

Ensuring the high quality of workmanship, customer service and satisfaction is met, is paramount for all staff who work for the company, Linda says.

“We also have the expertise amongst our detailing staff who help with the finer details that may have been missed at earlier stages.

These are tagged and altered in liaison with builders, architects and customers.”

The company, which started in 1999 and has 23 employees, has seven staff members who have completed their Frame and Truss, Building and Construction Training Organisation apprenticeship and one staff member who is about to complete their Truss apprenticeship.

Timber is sourced from the local ITM Crightons Building Centre (Prenail Systems’ parent company) and other local timber outlets.

Because of this partnership, it means Prenail Systems can act as a ‘one-stop shop’ for its customers, sourcing all of the extras required

to build a home. The company also provides extra services including photocopying from A4 to A0, access to hiab plus 30 minutes free use on site as well as excellent truck drivers, technical advice and quantity takeoff service.

jubilee It is a golden year for J Tomlinson & Co Ltd, which celebrates 50 years of success in May. This family-run business was founded in 1962 by Joe Tomlinson. Joe began small, painting local schools, but his reputation for a quality finish and premium service spread, and demand for his service quickly grew.

Branching out At the age of 25, Joe’s son Ray Tomlinson launched a building washing service, JT Property Wash, to complement the company’s painting service. It’s this casual “Kiwi-can-do-attitude” that has propelled the Wellington-based brewery into business success as a home grown maker of premium beers.

Tuatara’s path to fame started at the dawn of the millennium, when the brewery was built in the hills of Waikanai. The three entrepreneurs, Sean Murrie, Fraser Mcinnes and Carl Vasta, started Tuatara small, but kept dreaming big.

In 2011, this small 12-member-strong team walked into the spotlight, as the grand winner of the Kapiti Electra Business Awards and the emerging gold award winner at the Wellington Business Gold Awards.

Beer fashion Tuatara Brewery general manager Sean Murrie says the business watches beer trends in order to keep up with the market.

At present, what’s “it” in beer is craft or premium beers, with a focus on quality not quantity.

He says there has been a two percent per annum decrease on the amount of bulk brown beer sales, a trend Sean thinks will continue for the next 20 to 30 years.

“We are drinking better,” he says. Rather than just slugging back any old beer, it appears New Zealanders are making more refined and educated choices about what to drink.

Sean says beer was once seen as a “cold and fizzy” you could take a swig of before sitting down at the table for dinner and a glass of wine. “But now they are realising they can have beer instead of wine,” he says. “Beer (like wine) can be paired with food.”

“We are taking beer and making it as good as possible,” He adds, the beers are “true to style”, so wherever possible the company goes direct to the source to use the ingredients that have made the style famous.

From kegs to bottles

“We wanted New Zealanders to have beer that was consistently good,” Sean says.

It was a simple beginning, making keg beers and supplying their own bars.

But six years ago they took the plunge into the bottle. “Bottling opened up the market,” Sean says. “And our sales just went and doubled each year.”

With volumes of beer being drunk at about a million litres a year the brewery has become one of the “leading lights” in the craft industry.

Today you will find Tuatara all over the country, not hiding under rocks, like its minidinosaur counterpart, but within the local supermarkets, bars and at selected spots across the world. “We have gone a bit into Australia, and into Canada and the States,” Sean says.

With his lengthy CV in hospitality management, James was able to quickly turn the empty space into a bustling hive.

“I’d describe it as eclectic, but minimalist,” he says of Café Reka’s look. The overall design of the café was the collaboration of James’ vision and the expertise of designer George Rose. A feature wall shows off stones from the Hutt River, along with bits of brick-a-brack, an old gun, knobs, bits and pieces. “It’s great fun,” James says. “We are not your run of the mill café.”

back to the silver screen An era remembered

Once upon a time

For an evening reminiscent of the 1920s and 30s era of silent films, the glamour of an evening at the movies, accompanied by a classy cocktail and a succulent meal, look no further than the suburban heart of New Zealand’s movie industry.

The original site was a part of that bygone-era where moving images were still a magical invention.

In Miramar, well-known across the world as the home of set design and special effects company, Weta Workshop, the place to go is Roxy Cinema. With an elegant dinner at Coco Restaurant, followed by a quick stroll through the grand lobby into one of Roxy’s two top-ofthe range theatres – it’s an experience not to be missed.

Roxy Cinema co-owner, Jo-Anne Lundon says the idea was to recreate the aura of glamour around a night at the movies. “We all remember, as children, going to the movies – it was such a special outing. We wore our best Sunday clothes, bought ice creams, and enjoyed the sweet treats. We wanted to make going to the movies a special outing all over again.”

It is a story that harks back to the early 20th century, when the then-called Capitol Theatre was built in 1928 to screen silent films. In 1932 it was updated to screen “talkies”, movies with sound. The last film was screened in 1964, before the theatre was converted into the Capitol Court shopping mall. The mall operated for three decades before it finally closed and the buildings fell into a state of disrepair.

Weta to the rescue With intentions of getting the cinema back up and running, Weta Group purchased the site and did some work to earthquake proof it. But thanks to high-profile projects like the Lord of the Rings it was put on the backburner.

But not for too long; Jo-Anne says the shareholders were passionate about recreating this vision from the past, and once they got together it was all go from there.

Weta Workshop, co-founder and investor in Roxy, Tania Rodger told Scoop last year, on the eve of the cinema’s opening, that the rebuild was the logical next step to taking on the “challenge of breathing life back into one of Wellington’s original suburban cinemas”.

“This was an abandoned building that deserved a second chance,” Tania said. “I now see the Roxy as a unique gallery, a place to showcase the creative art of film making with our creative team from Weta Workshop. We’re so pleased to be able to share the magic of movies with people from far and wide.”

You’ve already heard of the dangers of drinking out of plastic

However, despite their knowledge of the film industry, the shareholders felt they lacked expertise within the hospitality industry. So, local foodies Valentina and Daminda Dias and bar owner Jonny Mckenzie were brought on board. Plans for the cinema grew to encompass a restaurant, café and bars.

The decision was made to demolish most of the old building to create more floor space, however to keep some of the old character, the original building façade was retained.

A peek inside

Another novel feature is the pair of chic, gold, cocktail drinking sculptures over-looking the grand lobby designed by Weta Workshop artist, Chris Campbell.

Out with the old and in with the new The original cinema was walk-in and seated around 680 people. But after the multi-million dollar rebuild, which took 13 months, Roxy rose out of the ashes, with two “state-of-theart” theatres equipped with identical digital equipment. Surround-sound loudspeakers are tuned in to perform an array of sound creating the clarity people expect from a high-quality professional cinema. In addition, Roxy boasts of being the “first purpose-built 3D cinema in New Zealand”.

The cinema was constructed by Peter Camp Builders Limited, with cabinetry and sculpture work by the Weta Workshop team who maintained much of its original art deco style.

The upstairs cinema, with its golden waterfall curtain of yesteryear, is the larger one, seating 165 people. Downstairs is a more intimate cinema, seating 55.

Interior Solutions were also brought on board to assist in the detail work on the ceilings and covings. Working with the designer they were able to produce the moulding samples, create the product and installed it in the theatre to create a magnificent and regal finish to continue on the theme of old-world elegance. “A talented team of builders and artists,” Jo-Anne says.

“They did an amazing job, with keeping the art deco 1930s theme. It’s all about the early cinemas, the silent movies, we kept it going all the way throughout, right down to the art deco coffee machine.”

It’s certainly a mesh of old and new, but in true art deco style, Roxy Cinema is helping nostalgic Wellingtonians relive the “movie going extravaganzas of their youth”.

And as Roxy reaches its first anniversary in April this year Jo-Anne says she believes people are thoroughly enjoying the experience.

Goods and Services | AE Tilley Where it all began If it hadn’t been for young Ernie Tilley’s passion for the great outdoors, the company may not have been formed at all. Having completed his apprenticeship as a coach builder, Arthur Ernest Tilley set sail from Melbourne, Australia to New Zealand to investigate the marvellous trout fishing possibilities he had heard so much about.

Arriving in Wellington with not a lot more than his bag of tools, Ernie gained work at a local coach builder for awhile. The trout fishing at the Tongariro River proved too satisfactory and by late 1922, Ernie established a jobbing shop in Vivian St, providing sheet metal and engineering services to the immediate area.

The business eventually outgrew several premises in Vivian St and during the 1930s, property was purchased in Leeds St, several doors down from the old Hannahs’ shoe factory. The business endured the hardships of the great depression and later the difficult war years.

Adjacent buildings were later acquired to keep up capacity for the post-war economic boom, a period that saw many thriving manufacturing businesses in the centre of Wellington. As the business grew in the 1950s, so did the need for additional staff and increased machine capabilities, met by larger production orders during the booming construction era and government projects.

By the early 1960s the trout fishing was still good and Ernie wanted to enjoy it more.

Succeeding Ernie was and is Don, one of his sons. In the mid 1960s, land was becoming a valuable commodity in central Wellington.

The nearby post office required land for expansion and Don needed additional plant area to keep up with capacity which necessitated a move to a purpose built factory at Rongotai.

The 1970s were met with the same rate of expansion, challenged by skilled labour shortages and fuel crisis. AE Tilley contributed greatly to the think big projects and construction boom of the time.

The early 1980s saw initial investments into CNC turret presses to keep up with production capabilities and advancement in offerings.

The company further invested in advanced CNC technology to maintain their competitive advantage and capture ongoing market demand.

Throughout the last decade of the 20th century, there was further investment in laser cutting technology and multiple-axis brake presses and further expansion with the buying of several adjacent buildings.

In 1992 AE Tilley became an ISO company, an important step forward with the focus on quality systems and practises, and reemphasised the company’s commitment to its existing brand pillars of innovation, quality and service.

The 1990s also saw a period of diversification.

The company engaged in several material handling agencies to complement their manufacturing activities. This proved to be very successful, introducing new customers to the company and adding value to their already extensive customer base.

Since 2000, the company has seen ongoing success through adapting to market requirements and creating new manufacturing partnerships with businesses throughout New Zealand and the world.

Helping companies break market barriers The great kiwi barbecue is an integral part of New Zealand’s social culture, so when a barbecue-importing company saw great potential in offering a circular sit-around model, it jumped at the opportunity to offer it in the marketplace.

Unfortunately when the stock arrived it did not meet New Zealand Safety Standards.

Instead of cutting its losses, the company approached Barclay Engineering to see if it could offer a solution to the costly problem.

In discussions it became apparent the gas jets were the main area of concern and until these could be changed, the product could not be sold. Barclay Engineering designers and developers were able to come up with a compliant design that also fitted into the barbecues’ existing design.

Barclay Engineering managing director Arthur Barclay says providing solutions to challenges, whether they be financial or design, are the most rewarding for the team. “It’s great to know that we can still offer solutions to problems that are put in front of us.”

When Te Papa had a problem with water leaking from its tanks in the roof, Arthur’s team were able to offer a solution. After discussions it was found the copper and stainless steel fittings were not compatible. So Arthur was able to give the solution of fitting stainless steel bushes so that the leaks would stop. “We also installed O-rings for further back up,” he says. The problem was solved and the exhibits below the leaking area were out of jeopardy.

Arthur has been at the helm of the company since it began in the 1950s. At the time it specialised in manufacturing camp stretchers and chairs. However the change to plumbing fixtures happened when he began working with fellow engineer Mr Simons.

Since then, Arthur’s focus has been as a leading forging specialist working in brass, stainless steel and mild steel, producing more than a thousand different products predominantly for the plumbing, engineering, gas, dairy, marine, electronic, electricity and processing industries.

Throughout this time Arthur has ensured technology plays a pivotal role in his work. This has seen a continued growth in the business and the repeat business that comes with being at the top of the industry.

Arthur is proud that Barclay Engineering has employed New Zealanders for more than 50 years, now with a staff of 21, and to have been part of the innovation that has taken place.
