Champion Canterbury Business Awards | Welhaus
Welhaus goes from strength to strength Award-winning Canterbury building company Welhaus is seeing its strong growth continue, from 2017 into 2018, for its state-of-the-art panelised timber buildings. Owner Dan Tremewan says the trend is very encouraging for the company, and the innovative timber industry. Pre-engineered panels are the basic elements of the Welhaus building system, and are now being employed by many New Zealand designers and builders for commercial and residential buildings. Dan says that with positive media coverage and increasing recognition by engineers and architects, they are becoming the panel of choice for many clients.
“It’s incredible the range of designs that timber can be employed with.” The company is busy delivering a suite of architecturally-designed, innovative new homes from Waiheke to Wanaka. Welhaus was recently recognised in the business community as a leader in its field, winning the 2017 Champion Canterbury Business Award in the infrastructure/ trades category, and the company has been recognised each year since it won a New Zealand Timber Design Award for the “Beach Barn” in 2015. Sister company Welstruct is the manufacturer, supplier and installer of the timber frame, panels, Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) and other structural timber products for builders, designers and developers embracing the new structural timber technologies.

“CLT is increasingly seen as the building material of the 21st century for its environmental properties combined with its great strength. It is being used in multi-story buildings and is making serious inroads into the markets of steel and concrete,” Dan says. “New Zealand builders and designers are very aware of the need for improved seismic performance and security in an earthquake zone and CLT provides that,” he says. Welstruct has many exciting projects booked this year, including supplying acclaimed construction company Dominion Constructors Limited state-of-the-art building at the University of Canterbury, in the new science precinct.
Dan says Welhaus and Welstruct are committed to educating the wider industry and public, and promoting the growth of beautiful and sustainable structural timber in the New Zealand market.
