Our first issue explores changes on the Mac campus as we begin the 2022-2023 school year: new policies, new teachers, new leaders stepping up in athletics and fine arts. We take a lot at what is at stake in the upcoming November election for our school, our city and our state. We chronicle how budget cuts have forced the orchestra teachers to take over the Lamar Middle School orchestra program in addition to their duties with MacOrchestra, and we honor the memory of longtime Mac custodian Yolanda Zertuche who passed away after a brief battle with stage 4 lung cancer. We check on fall sports cheer, tennis, volleyball and football, and we make a case for the district to build a swim center for all school swim teams to use. In our opinion section, we dream of a world with a more diverse lineup at ACL and without dreaded summer reading. And we debut El Escudo by explaining why we think it's essential for us to publish articles in Spanish.
