Adam Sanchez was building his personal home in 1991 when he became so frustrated with the process he fired his builder and decided to build the home himself. Since then he’s grown Diamante Custom Homes by focusing on customer service and a highly streamlined experience. We sat down with Sanchez to find out what makes him and his company stand out above the rest.
What makes Diamante different from other custom homebuilders?
If you could give someone looking to build a home one piece of advice, what would it be?
If you could take a vacation anywhere in the world, all expenses paid, where would you go and why?
The involvement that we have from the very beginning. My team and I are involved from day 1, we never leave your side. It’s more about the customer service than anything and an acute focus from a Design Builders perspective. You see in our Design Phase we have enhanced control of the budget and we are able to keep the targets in check. By the time we move into construction nothing is a surprise because we have already built the project once in house!
Do the research on your builder and pick them based on experience, the staff, but most importantly whether or not you get along with that person because it’s going to be a long, hard process. Lots of people talk about price, but make sure you pick a builder that is a good personality fit for you.
We were in Vancouver, CA last week looking at the latest and greatest in Contemporary designs. I hear that Sydney, Australia is currently leading the Contemporary movement. I would love to spend some time there, maybe take an excursion into the Outback as well!
What do you do when you’re not working?
What’s been the biggest challenge of your life and how have you learned from it?
What trends do you see in the industry right now? People are moving away from that old world, Mediterranean style. It’s still out there, but definitely not as prevalent as it was before. There’s a move towards contemporary as people are starting to realize it doesn’t have to be cold. What’s the craziest thing you’ve been asked to design?
We work a lot so we enjoy spending time with our families. We also like to travel, hunt, fish, and play golf… And how can we forget those beloved Spurs games! What’s the best book you’ve ever read? Managing Your Business With 7 Key Numbers by Jeffrey K Prager and Scott Stroud. Sometimes I can overanalyze because I’m a numbers guy, but there’s really only seven numbers you have to worry about.
When the recession came, and I had a decision to make. I had staff members and I had to decide to either cut the staff or keep them and wait until the market comes back. We spent quite a bit of cash, but we didn’t let anybody go. At the time we didn’t know if the market would come back, but it was a good decision since it ended up coming back even better than before.
A 12-car, two-story garage made to look like a guesthouse. It was designed like a parking garage where you actually drove up a ramp to get to the second level. What’s one thing you would like to do in a future build but haven’t yet? I’d like to do a timber-frame home to be really rustic with natural logs. I have a friend who does this in Wyoming, and I’d love to do one here. It’s all of this exposed beautiful wood that’s really elegant.
