All’s Well

I’m writing this letter early on a Friday morning after completing a 10-minute meditation on my Calm app about building consistency. It’s just one component of my daily wellness practice, along with long evening walks, a plant-based diet and an ongoing edit of our home’s interior to make it more regenerative.

Coming out of the pandemic, we have a heightened awareness of the influence that our homes can have on our well-being and the broader environment. At Luxe, we’re taking a leadership role by engaging in this conversation with our readers as well as the greater design community. From conscious landscaping to wellness retreats and meditation rooms, you’ll find the theme woven throughout this issue. We also recently hosted our firstever Living Well summit in Los Angeles featuring a captivating lineup of speakers who inspired and educated our audience with topics ranging from the power of the downstate to universal rules about how to design with intention. I encourage you to learn more by tuning into our new wellness-focused channel, Wellness by Design, launching soon on designtvbysandow.com

NEW AND NOTEWORTHY

HOLLY HUNT LOS ANGELES

A monumental corner warehouse at North Highland Avenue and Romaine Street is now home to Holly Hunt. “We wanted to be a part of the Sycamore District’s creative energy, and shape our

space to deliver an experience that inspires and supports the local art and design community,” says president Marc Szafran. The company tapped architectural firm Johnston Marklee to transform the site. “It was important to engage a firm with Los Angeles roots, as our goal was to authentically capture the spirit of this city,” adds Jo Annah Kornak, SVP and executive creative director of Holly Hunt. “Johnston Marklee is well versed in L.A.’s urban vernacular, which translated beautifully into a design balancing the grit of the existing building with our brand’s modern elegance.” The new flagship, which consists of two modernist villas within the structure’s double-height concrete shell, will house the company’s furnishings collection, while fabrics, wallcoverings, and rugs will remain on display at their Pacific Design Center showroom. hollyhunt.com

FINE & DANDY CO. ARTISANAL WALLCOVERINGS AND MURALS

Fine & Dandy Co. was built on its founders’ “shared affinity for beautiful old things and a desire to bring something into the world that made people happy,” says L.A.-based Carla Morano, who launched the wallcovering company in 2018 with partners Shelley Weinreb and Jill Steinberg. Their latest grass-cloth design, Zanzibar (shown at right), is available in three colorways and debuted this fall. It depicts sandy footpaths through dense tropical foliage against a backdrop of hazy mountains in the distance. “We wanted to create a landscape that felt more primordial, with an exotic, sensual feel to it,” notes Weinreb, explaining that their murals often begin with original paintings and an imagined story. For Zanzibar, that story was one of a mysterious island sojourn filled with treasure, intrigue and discovery. “Murals offer a sense of travel and transformation, while allowing the house to become a sanctuary,” adds Steinberg. Their designs are a celebration of home and an invitation to voyage indeed. fineanddandycompany.com

OPEN HOUSE

ATRIO

Designer Jeremiah Brent, who founded his interiors firm a decade ago, has gathered longtime collaborators, vendors and artisans to open Atrio, “a destination for a life well-lived.” Brent has always believed in “the power of well-made everyday items that reflect who you are and what you care about,” and this new shop embodies his belief. Located at Platform in Culver City, it offers furnishings and accessories for every room, including ceramics by Marta Bonilla and D-Haene Studio, bedding from Cultiver, and artworks by Zane Taylor and Ethan Caflisch. There is also a flower shop and a forthcoming restaurant to emphasize Brent’s desire to address all five senses. “It’s about being able to sit down and have a cup of coffee, discover your favorite piece of furniture or meet with friends,” he says. “We want you to walk in and feel inspired to bring these pieces into your home and use them to tell your story.” shopatrio.com

TALKING SHOP

LITT CONCEPT HOUSE

When Kevin Litt’s parents retired from their successful Sherman Oaks antiques store, he and his wife Dina saw an opportunity to reboot. Refreshing the original 20,000-square-foot location on Ventura Boulevard, they imagined a space for a next generation of collectors, with an in-house coffee shop to boot. Luxe sat down with the couple to learn more. littconcepthouse.com

Tell us about your vision behind the new Litt Concept House. Dina Litt: People are over fast fashion and fast manufacturing. Their homes have a new level of importance. Our eye is to the unique, and that’s what sets us apart. Kevin Litt: Our emphasis is on European pieces that are casual and not fussy. We redo items too, like bleach a heavy Victorian piece or add leather details.

What should shoppers expect now? D.L.: People can come in, have a coffee and see beautiful things, including paintings by local artists. Or find smaller gift items, too. We’re always changing things up for a seasonal vibe. K.L.: My parents love it—we’re ready for the next 50 years!

SHELF LIFE

Woods + Dangaran: Architecture and Interiors

“Every house is a laboratory for developing details and investigating human behavior,” writes Michael Webb in Woods + Dangaran: Architecture and Interiors The monograph celebrates the 10th anniversary of Brett Woods and Joseph Dangaran’s architecture firm, highlighting such projects as their restoration of Craig Ellwood’s 1965 Moore House in the Hollywood Hills and Wood’s own home in Palm Springs. As architect Mark Rios states in his foreword, this tome celebrates homes “at the intersection of place, the needs of their clients and the pursuit of a joyful way of life,” and offers unique insight into “the threads that tie these projects together.” rizzoliusa.com

ELEGANT INTERIORS COMPLEMENT THE FLAVORS OF THREE NEW RESTAURANTS ACROSS THE SOUTHLAND.

CONRAD LOS ANGELES

With interiors by Tara Bernerd & Partners, a new hotel has opened at the Grand LA, Frank Gehry’s long-awaited, mixed-use building in DTLA. The Conrad Los Angeles boasts two new dining concepts by famed chef and humanitarian José Andrés in collaboration with ThinkFoodGroup. On the 10 th floor, San Laurel is open for breakfast and dinner and finds its culinary roots in Spain—but Andrés gives it a California twist with an emphasis on local ingredients. And just across from the restaurant is Agua Viva, an all-day terrace spot where the chef shifts to Latin and Asian flavors. Both settings offer sweeping vistas of the city’s ever-growing skyline. hilton.com

SOLSTICE

Set within The Boardwalk—Irvine’s Gensler-designed business complex—is Solstice, a modern American restaurant by chef Demetrio Zavala of Food Network fame, with interiors by Alexis Readinger of hospitality design firm Preen, Inc. The latter, who is also behind Alimento in Silver Lake and Tesse in West Hollywood, created interiors that act as a subtle backdrop to the seasonal menu. Four different dining locations within the space reference the seasons— from spring greens to more autumnal hues—while floor-to-ceiling interior windows let guests watch the hubbub of kitchen activity. A private dining room that welcomes 24 guests, a trellised patio and an outdoor lounge round out the eatery’s options. dineatsolstice.com

PORTA VIA PALM DESERT

The latest iteration of popular Californian bistro Porta Via has opened on the western end of shopping st reet El Paseo. Sophie Goineau, a native of Quebec who now calls L.A. home, took her design cues from the greats of Desert Modernism such as John Lautner, Harold Levitt and Paul R. Williams. The terrazzo floors with built-in planters, banquette seating and concrete breeze-block screens found at myriad local landmarks also fed her inspiration, while a fresh green palette, organic textures and gold notes add contemporary accents. And countering the moody vibe of the walnut-paneled interiors are three surrounding patios with a decidedly Slim Aarons feel. portaviarestaurants.com

AS WATER BECOMES INCREASINGLY PRECIOUS, LANDSC APE DESIGNERS OFFER GUIDANCE—AND HOPE—FOR CREATING BEAUTIFUL DROUGHT-TOLERANT GARDENS. WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL

With decades of experience gardening through droughts, landscape designers across the West Coast have themselves become a precious resource. Their collected insights and ideas offer a path forward that reduces water consumption and aides in the overall improvement of our environment. From big changes to concepts as simple as using native plants, the West’s take on waterwise gardening—the practice of selecting plants that require less irrigation—is a wellspring of inspiration.

Many in the industry agree that a first step is changing our mindset: Waterwise doesn’t mean unattractive landscapes. And outdated language like xeriscaping (a term coined by Denver’s Department of Water in the 1980’s) hasen’t helped win anyone over. Landscape designers today are moving the conversation beyond gravel and cacti and showing just how inviting waterwise gardens can be. “People are getting into it now,” says Charlie Ray of The Green Room Collaborative in Phoenix. “They’re seeing how a dynamic native garden adds to the atmosphere

of their home.” Montecito Landscape’s Lisa Cullen has similarly shifted the dialogue with clients. “Nobody wants to do something because they have to,” explains the California-based organic gardener. “Rather than selling waterwise, we focus on the benefits and how pretty it can be.”

“We’ve overwatered environments for decades because of inappropriate material choices,” continues Ray, who carefully considers which flora and fauna to use for each project and often starts by adding shade trees, which create a micro-climate under their canopy. “Layer shrubs, massed for drifts of color and texture, and then lots of wildflowers—you’ll see the birds and butterflies come right in,” he adds.

For Forestoration’s David Noftsinger there is such joy in seeing blanket flowers grow wild in nearby Glacier National Park, and equally happily in his own garden. “Planting natives helps develop a sense of place and an appreciation for the bounty of your area,” explains Noftsinger, who recommends homeowners familiarize themselves with natives unique to their state. Visiting

local botanical gardens for inspiration can also be helpful. “Become a member, go to workshops, volunteer—they’re a key resource for local communities,” says Ray.

All in all, the approach to gardening and landscaping happening on a local level along the West Coast can be replicated across the country. And as Noftsinger believes, “the more pieces we put back together, and incorporate what’s supposed to be there, the more change we’ll see— every bit you can do is beneficial.”

Grounding Approach

VERA ICONICA ARCHITECTURE’S VERONICA SCHREIBEIS SMITH BREAKS DOWN THE IMPORTANCE OF WELLNESS IN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT.

I like to say we design experiences and architecture happens to be our medium. Whether you call it wellness architecture or something different, what we’re seeking to do—not just with every project, but with every space—is nurture the soul, optimize people’s lives and elevate the human experience. Architecture is the practice of creating your surroundings and it can influence everything from an inhabitant’s emotions and cognitive performance to relationships and the ways in which we gather and interact. Did you know we spend 90 percent of our time indoors? How we sculpt and model that

interior really impacts every single part of our lives.

Buildings are powerful. There have been neuroscientific studies done where EKGs are performed on people who are then taken into unique buildings like a temple, Grand Central Station or the Salk Institute. Their frontal lobe actually shuts down once inside. This is what happens in meditation, when you enter a non-dualistic or flow state, which is your highest level of being. So people who can tap into this and work from their flow state are often high-performing businesspeople, musicians or creatives— they feel super productive and happy. I try to create spaces that support how people want to operate and are tailored to their

inhabitants in every way because when homes have a proportional or harmonic resonance, you will ultimately feel better.

At the end of the day, humans are a part of nature and if we fight that or try to shut it out, we end up hurting ourselves. I make sure that natural materials and plenty of light are present in every project. Using local resources also creates a sense of culture, belonging and identity which is really important to our existence. But everything comes back to being in harmony with nature and taking care of our planet. veraiconica.com

FROM CALIFORNIA TO THE CATSKILLS, THESE NEW HIGH-DESIGN DESTINATIONS ARE AIMED AT IMMERSIVE WELL-BEING.

If the latest crop of wellness hotels, retreats and fitness clubs across the U.S. have anything in common, it’s that exactly none of them adhere to the ubiquitous spa aesthetic of recent decades—dependably soothing but often dull. The future of luxury destinations takes a more full-bodied approach and looks

to improve your physical, emotional and spiritual states through elevated experiences and sophisticated spaces. From luxe resorts and nature-focused bootcamp-style getaways to exclusive, über-stylish gyms, these wellness hot spots will have you longing to pack your bags and take a deep exhale upon arrival.

RESET Telluride, Colorado

The rugged San Juan Mountains were undeniably influential for architect and designer Stephanie Malsed when creating the interior scheme for Reset’s wellness center, the hub of an ultra-luxe, intensive nature-focused retreat in Colorado. The state-of-the-art facility for sweating, recovering and mindfulness practice harnesses the five elements—wood, fire, earth, metal and water—and draws in colors from the outdoors, namely pine green and warm pink tones from alpenglow. Guests engage in guided half-day treks and self-care rituals surrounded by nature or in the comfort of the wellness center. At the end of the day, retreat to a private section of the Madeline Hotel & Residences with amenities that include algae-infused slippers, a hydration bar and customized aromatherapy. resettelluride.com

THE RANCH Hudson Valley, New York

The Ranch, a results-oriented fitness retreat, which began in Malibu in 2010, is ready for its East Coast debut after taking over the legendary 200-acre Table Rock Estate in upstate New York. Designer Steven Gambrel oversaw the interior and historical restoration of the 1902 structure, devising a total transformation of its rooms, including the former ballroom reimagined as a gym for yoga, meditation and fitness sessions. Guests can kick off their morning with hikes through nearby Ringwood and Harriman State Park. Organic, plant-based meals, naps and daily massages are additional hallmarks of the idyllic but intense regiment. theranchmalibu.com

SENSEI PORCUPINE CREEK Rancho Mirage, California

A sense of calm and Japanese Zen penetrates the light-filled 22-room and -villa Sensei Porcupine Creek. A sister property to Lawrence Ellison and Dr. David Agus’ Sensei Lanai in Hawaii, the newest location promises guests a similarly bespoke journey toward living healthier, longer lives. Ellison oversaw all design details as a 230-acre private estate in the Santa Rosa Mountain foothills was converted into the ultimate wellness destination offering patrons three pathways to follow: Move, Nourish and Rest. The sunny and lush property—complete with gardens, a lagoon pool, golf fairways and hiking trails—is as much a part of the recipe for well-being as the Sensei Guide-led practices and treatments (think Abhyanga four-handed massage), plus five-star cuisine at Sensei by Nobu. sensei.com

HEIMAT Los Angeles, California

This fitness and wellness concept club, located in a refurbished 1930s industrial building in Los Angeles, is the future for the gym-going, Soho House-belonging, health-conscious set. The members-only outpost boasts stained glass panels dividing custom strength machines from a studio of specially designed Pilates reformers. The light-filled cardio area, complete with a cacti garden, resembles a chic hotel lobby while the locker rooms, conceived by Germany-based design studio Inco Media, are fitted with marble, hand-crafted wood paneling and Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona daybeds. Upstairs, famed architect and designer Martin Brudnizki enriched the interiors of Michelin-starred chef Michael Mina’s Mother Tongue restaurant, which lives alongside a sparkling pool and exuberant co-working space awash in yellow. heimat.com

Wellness in the Woods

A LUXURIOUS MONTANA RESORT PROVIDES NATURE FOR NURTURE.

It turns out that you can get pretty close to nirvana by taking a mindfulness walk. I’ve recently leaned into the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk who encouraged the practice of mindful walking. Yet, to truly deepen the connection, one needs to be in a place where the magical properties of wellness can take hold. For me, that was on a trip to The Green O.

Nestled into a quiet ponderosa pine forest hillside, the resort sits on 37,000 sweeping acres outside of Missoula, Montana, and envelopes visitors like a soft hug. One part luxury ranch and two parts nature immersion for body and soul, the all-inclusive, adults-only property is an exclusive assemblage of 12 design-forward, glass-boxed villas constructed with sustainable principles that dot the land like works of sculptural art. Of all the semi-secluded “haus” designs, my favorite was Tree Haus, which sits on stilts rising 23-feet above ground and features a spiral staircase running through its three-story spine. I enjoyed lavish comforts sheltered inside while simultaneously immersed in the panoramic landscape, glimpsed through towering floor-to-ceiling windows that provided views of wildlife and a hint of warm twinkling lights from Green Hauses beyond.

Among The Green O’s 12 rustic-yet-refined accommodations is Tree Haus, which sits on stilts offering an elevated view of the surrounding landscape.

This communal-like setting is crowned by Social Haus, the property’s heart center that functions as dining room, bar and central gathering spot. Architect and designer Kristen Becker of Seattle-based Mutuus Studio worked alongside interior designer and executive co-owner Nadine Lipson to conceive interiors that cast a smoky Modernism vibe with cozy campfire-style seating, leafy green hues and shou sugi ban wood reflective of the woodland surroundings. The Michelin-worthy culinary experience, led by executive chef Brandon Cunningham, impresses with nightly curated nine-course tasting menus, gourmet wood-fired pizzas available for delivery to your private hot tub, and artful delights by James Beard-nominated pastry chef Krystle Swenson. It could well be that her rosé-soaked rhubarb cake and dark chocolate brown tart with conifer green gelato ice cream were all the wellness I needed!

I spent my days learning how to flyfish on the Blackfoot River accompanied by a patient guide; riding ATVs through sprawling pastures; stopping off at the equestrian center for a bit of horse therapy and luxuriating in a mineral mud bath at the spa. But the most profound part of my stay was the stillness of early morning strolls in the woods, practicing mindful breathing and walking— and connecting to the wonders of the earth. thegreeno.com

Stackabl, a digital platform by Toronto design firm Stacklab that allows users to create one-of-a-kind pieces from leftover, locally sourced materials, has joined forces with New York-based gallery Maison Gerard to launch its inaugural collection. As part of the platform’s introductory designer capsule series, Jamie Drake and Caleb Anderson of Drake/Anderson, designed this Madame Chaise Lounge. Layers of stacked felt remnants (a Stackabl signature) form a modern version of a traditional chaise, while the jolt of pink is an ode to midcentury fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli. maisongerard.com

PLAYFUL PLASTICS

James Shaw’s colorful and tactile Plastic Baroque Chairs prove that a problematic and mundane material can be reimagined into something beautiful. Shaw has worked with plastics for nearly a decade and created a special extruding tool allowing him to further push the limits of the material’s assumed potential. British designer Jane Atfield’s RCP2 chair, inspired by Dutch furniture designer Gerrit Rietveld’s 1923 Military Side Chair, was one of the first pieces of furniture made exclusively from recycled plastic. SMART STYLE

When it came to her own kitchen in the greater New York City area, French-born, Manhattan-based interior designer Laurence Carr designed the space to serve as a central wellness area for her family of five. “My husband and I have three teenagers, and this is a place where we can work, socialize and cook together,” explains Carr, who collaborated with architect Jordan Rosenberg to conceive the contemporary home. “Biophilia, plenty of natural light and sustainability were also important considerations. There are large windows that provide a connection to the garden, and the

amount of light entering the space is important in minimizing the electricity and lighting that’s necessary.” Carr kept the palette clean and simple, employing a mix of dark gray and cream cabinetry, Calacatta marble and wood accents. “Cream is much softer than white, and the gray lends a contemporary touch,” says the designer. To create a look that’s seamless and streamlined, Carr paneled many of the appliances and even included a hidden door—made to look like one of the cabinets— that leads to a walk-in pantry. “The space feels timeless yet modern.” laurencecarr.com

CALMING FORCE

Claire Staszak of the Chicago firm Centered by Design is known for what she calls a holistic approach, combining her love of interiors with a passion for wellness (she is also a certified yoga instructor). So, it’s no surprise that when she was tasked with the renovation of a 1930s Colonial north of Chicago, she whipped up a kitchen for a young family that feels calm, balanced and serene. Staszak was limited to working within the kitchen’s existing footprint, however she was able to make a few key changes—including closing off an opening to the dining room, removing a window to add symmetry and adding a larger window to bring in more light—that make all the difference. “In doing this, we were able to fit in everything we wanted, including a large island and a coffee bar,” notes the designer. “The clients wanted something fresh and beautiful with a mix of Southern charm and the feel of a French bistro.” With that in mind, Staszak installed custom cabinetry from her firm’s in-house line in a light taupe shade, cafe-inspired lighting, natural wood accents and periwinkle backsplash tile from Ann Sacks. “Custom cabinetry provides the opportunity for a variety of details tailored to the homeowners’

needs, such as arched doors and open shelving,” Staszak explains. With the clients being avid cooks and entertainers, storage was a major focus. The designer incorporated hidden compartments for appliances, bakeware and utensils, while niches flanking the range hold cooking essentials such as oils and spices. Meanwhile, easy-to-clean quartz surfaces lend durability to the hardworking space. “Health and well-being are important to this couple, and I really tried to be a calm and grounding presence during the renovation process,” Staszak says. “My job is always to take the stress off my clients, make the process feel like a true collaboration, and channel a Zen attitude.” Most importantly, adds the designer, “a space doesn’t have to be boring in order to feel balanced.” centeredbydesign.com

NATURAL INSTINCT

When Los Angeles−based decorator Mandy Cheng set eyes on the magical treetop views from this Woodland Hills kitchen—which sits three stories above the ground thanks to the home’s hillside setting—it became clear that nature should take center stage in this renovation. “The view inspired the design and dictated the palette,” Cheng explains. “I wanted to bring the trees in and tie the design to the outdoors.” Cheng chose a combination of white oak upper cabinets and open shelving, which recalls oak trees outside, and green to channel the leaves. “When colors are consistent between indoors and out it gives the illusion of more space,” Cheng notes. Furthermore, the designer installed windowed cabinetry that not only references the residence’s Craftsman style, but “maintains that open, airy quality. We wanted to keep the cabinetry from feeling too heavy.” Low-maintenance quartz countertops, unlacquered brass fixtures that will develop a patina over time and a “natural-looking” textured tile backsplash round out the scheme. To address the client’s need for additional storage, Cheng installed custom drawers for cooking utensils, a nook for storing paper towels and wooden crates to hold potatoes and onions. “The previous layout discouraged cooking and eating well because it didn’t function properly,” Cheng says. “Now it feels clean, calm and inviting.” mandychengdesign.com

Keep the Peace

WELLNESS ROOMS HAVE EVOLVED FROM AMENITY TO NECESSITY.

As our world grows increasingly complex and connected, the need for places to get away from it all grows too. From Luxe’s bird’s eye view, seeking escape doesn’t necessarily mean looking outside the confines of home— quite the opposite, in fact. Take this Glendora, California, meditation room by designer Norm Wogan, which perfectly illustrates today’s artistic, deeply considered approach to at-home escapism. May these magical wellness spaces, from Brooklyn to Hawaii’s Big Island, inspire you to create your own slice of sanctuary.

Designer Norm Wogan scoured local Indian and Moroccan shops for unique artifacts—including an antique altar and aged copper pendants—to outfit his client’s Glendora, California, healing and meditation room. wogandesign.com

TAKE PAUSE

“My husband and I took meditation classes years ago. Afterwards, we set the intention to do a daily 20-minute meditation in the morning and another in the afternoon,” shares designer Lisa Kahn. For Kahn, maintaining a morning practice was easy. An afternoon practice amidst the activity of office life was another story—so she crafted a meditation room in her Naples, Florida, headquarters. To encourage

midday respite, the designer wrapped the space in a Kravet raffia, adding comfortable pillows in a HomArt batik fabric and live-edge wood stands to display healing objects. “We believe meditation is an important element of the day to gather a sense of self when the bustle feels all-consuming,” she says. “It helps us stay connected to our larger purpose for being here.” lisakahndesigns.com

RECHARGING STATION

When hired by clients with an appreciation for the Japanese bathing ritual of a shower to cleanse the body followed by a bath to cleanse the soul, designer Lindsay Anyon Brier saw a unique opportunity for an exterior wellness space. Specifically, when she viewed their Piedmont, California, home’s deck, set conveniently off a gym, she envisioned a soaking tub. In collaboration with Berkeley Heat, she conceived a cedar hot tub seemingly dropped within the tree line. Underscoring the home’s commitment to sustainability, the creation boasts a drainage feature in lieu of chemical maintenance. (Wastewater is then used to irrigate the property.) Adding a touch of sparkle to the scene, decorative screens with a Moroccan motif “create a sense of privacy and intimacy while focusing the eye on views of San Francisco Bay,” notes the designer. anyondesign.com

HEAVEN SENT

An enchanting yet derelict Hawaii Island property brought together the team of designer Marion Philpotts-Miller, architect Paige Wilburn and landscape designer David Tamura. Together, they restored the home’s old growth teak ceilings and beams, infused light and flow throughout the interiors and reimagined the grounds, whose pièce de résistance is an entry courtyard designed for peaceful repose. A lanai illuminated by vintage Japanese lanterns and outfitted with an antique bench flanked by bronze Burmese guardians offers the homeowners a particularly contemplative space to enjoy the sights and sounds of several water features. Not the least of which is a hidden shower garden tucked behind a retractable teak screen. philpotts.net

DREAMING IN COLOR

Leave it to designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard to kick any notions that neutral and wellness must walk hand-in-hand to the curb. Exhibit A: This exuberant massage room set high on a cliff in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Bullard confidently swathed the space in Benjamin Moore’s Covington Blue, a languid, ocean-green tone that plays to the Sea of Cortez beyond the windows. A medley of natural woven sisal and abaca furnishings—all nods to indigenous Mexican arts and crafts—join a 1970s painting scored at an antique shop in Mexico City, which Bullard admits is his favorite element of the room. “The vibrancy holds you captive whilst still maintaining calmness due to its abstract nature and ear thy pigments,” he explains, adding, “it has a distinct and welcoming warmth reminiscent of Cabo’s famous sunsets.”

INNER SANCTUM

When designer Cheryl Settino Mosher’s clients tasked her with crafting a prayer room within their Brooklyn apartment, she did her research first. For visual inspiration, Mosher referenced Owen Jones’ The Grammar of Ornament, looking to motifs of ancient civilizations.

Ultimately, she landed on a quartet of Schumacher wallpapers in sepia tones, which were deconstructed then put together in a bespoke pattern intended to evoke the feel of a sacred space modernized for contemporary

living. Meanwhile, for the layout, she used a Qibla compass to place the family’s beloved prayer rug directed toward the Kaaba. Bathed in diffuse sunlight, the room, with its cozy, velvet-covered divan, has become a reading room as well as a place for worship. “It’s an area to recharge,” says Mosher. “Now more than ever, we need these spaces. Whether you have a large home or an apartment, you have to make time to sit and find quiet—whatever that means for you.” brooklyn.studio

ICONS + INNOVATORS

Within any industry, profession or creative community, there are icons and there are innovators. Those in the first group—the icons—have a storied history and abiding level of expertise that has placed them at the very top of their field. While the second—the innovators—are discovering new ideas and ways of working that bring energy and ingenuity to their craft. And an important point not to be overlooked is that in many instances icons and innovators are one and the same. In this special section, Luxe Interiors + Design celebrates these enduring leaders and forward-thinking visionaries whose commitment to what they do and the people they do it for is both far-reaching and long-lasting.

S P E C I A L A D V E R T I S I N G S E C T I O N | LOS ANGELES | Appleton Partners LLP

California’s stunning topography and climate have inspired the world’s most iconic architects to design groundbreaking structures. When Marc Appleton formed Appleton Partners LLP Architects in 1976, he began a creative legacy that would place him and his award-winning firm in this exclusive pantheon.

“Appleton Partners is not a preconceived style or brand, but a journey we take with our clients to realize their dreams,” says Ken Mineau, managing partner.

“We have designed over 700 projects and are proud to specialize in the planning, design and landscaping of custom residential, institutional and commercial projects.” From their offices in Santa Monica and Santa Barbara, the team not only designs new projects, but reimagines existing properties. “We enjoy extending the life of noteworthy places,” partner Andrew Scott shares. “And are happy to have the next generation of designers remodel ours.”

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

“The outdoor room is one of the most desired features in SoCal architecture and an integral part of our projects,” Mineau says. “Our designs for these spaces create varied experiences for dining, socializing, work, play, exercise, reflection and relaxation. While defined by the landscape, outdoor spaces need to be seen as an extension of the original architecture where the materials and details are from a common vocabulary. Features such as a pergola, walled garden, lath house, fire feature and fountain all reinforce the common aesthetic, resulting in outdoor spaces that feel welcoming, secure, intimate and comfortable.”

HOME, REDEFINED

“While our design process has always been inspired by our clients’ wants and needs,” Scott explains, “the current live-work world has allowed us to draw upon our experience and body of work to provide informed design solutions that are an optimal fit for today’s lifestyles.”

Top This Central California home and vineyard incorporates stonework indigenous to the region, timber beams rescued from Lake Superior and barn siding from Pennsylvania’s Amish country. When it comes to innovation, having the courage to make a big leap is mission critical. For artist Haleh Mashian, that moment came when she decided to expand from her 25-year career as an expressionist painter to include gallery owner and curator. “What defines an innovator is the courage to follow one’s vision, to always be willing to take risks and enter the unknown,” she says. Mashian “wanted to open a new door for me and my community where people get together to celebrate art for the sake of art and not because it’s a commodity.” Hence, she created Mash Gallery four years ago with the mission to “create a hub for creativity and community to thrive under one roof.” Mashian adds: “Being an artist myself, I am inclined to showcase art pieces that speak to me and inspire me. As a curator, I want to be the bridge connecting the artists’ vision with the public by hosting thematic exhibitions throughout the year.”

SOURCES OF INSPIRATION

“Inspiration is all around,” says Mashian. “I always pay attention to how I feel after being in front of a magnificent painting, piece of furniture or architecture. The common quality is a sense of awe.” On a personal level, Mashian credits meditation.

“My inspiration comes from my meditation practice, where I can connect to my essence beyond my mind. I realize my mind is only a fragment of what matters in my creativity and the best work happens when I drop it and enter a no-mind zone.”

UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS

When asked what’s next, Mashian enthuses: “Mash will continue exhibiting meaningful, uplifting, high-energy exhibitions incorporating technology, virtual and physical art, fashion and interior design—all under one roof! In other words, mashing up all disciplines.” Mashian wants to “continue being a tastemaker in the Los Angeles art scene.”

One trait of an icon and an innovator is that they can see the big picture view of a scenario. That’s the perspective they use when determining how to focus their business. For Jessica Viola, an icon is “someone in service to something bigger than them, who is willing to stand on the edge—where innovations happen—and allow their unique and creative pulse to move through and into the world without inhibition or judgment.” Viola is the founder, owner and lead designer of Viola Gardens Design and a licensed California contractor who started her business in 2007. “My career started in Northern California with a foundation in ecological design, habitat restoration, permaculture practices, organic gardening and landscape construction,” Viola says. “Hands in the earth, head below heart, I learned to garden, plant, prune and practice growing gardens and building landscapes with my own hands.”

BLOOMING BUSINESS

“Business catapulted around 2012, at the onset of the drought in California and while cities began implementing incentives for removal of lawns,” says Viola. “Meanwhile, we had been promoting the removal of lawns for years. We were prepared and able to meet the moment with grace, skill and expertise.”

Turn of Fate

Tapping into her past connection with a Manhattan Beach property, a designer shapes its next chapter. WRITTEN BY ABIGAIL STONE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAM FROST

Architecture: Louie Tomaro, Tomaro Architecture Interior Design: Andrika King and Jen Hart, Andrika King Design Home Builder: Rick Hall, Elite Design Builders, Inc. Landscape Architecture: Robert Jones, Jones Landscapes Westringia, dwarf olive shrubs, coastal rosemary, pineapple guava and silver carpet line the way to the front door of this Manhattan Beach home. Like the jasmine climbing the white-washed brick wall, landscape designer Robert Jones selected each planting to soften the house’s modern edges.

It’s said, by way of an age-old proverb, that familiarity breeds contempt. But in the case of this Manhattan Beach project, familiarity proved to be key to its success. “I had lived here myself, so I really got to know the property,” recalls interior designer Andrika King, explaining that, for several years, she and her family had rented the home formerly occupying it. When the current owners opted to tear down the 1940s structure and build their dream house in its place, they tapped none other than King herself to handle the interior design and provide input on spatial planning. “I was so intimately familiar with the lot, its light and its patterns,” she says.

Using every inch of the expansive grounds was paramount. “Our clients were looking to maximize their outdoor space,” notes architect Louie Tomaro, who factored these wishes into the new plans. While many homes in this beachside neighborhood concentrate their living spaces on upper levels to capture Pacific views, he went against the grain and proposed creating a residence focused on an uninterrupted flow to the exteriors instead. He also placed the primary bedroom suite into one corner of the ground floor with access to the garden. “Since this might be the owners’ forever home, it gives them the option to one day transition into a single-story living situation,” the architect explains.

The abode’s seamless connection to the backyard makes outdoor entertaining a breeze— which was an important factor for the clients. And to better accommodate for indoor gatherings too, Tomaro decided to dig down. “Adding a basement enabled us to maintain more of the yard space,” he points out. Eventually, the 4,500-square-foot subterranean space grew to include a bar, gym, sauna and bowling alley. But this punch list wasn’t without a few hiccups. “The biggest challenges we encountered were logistics and supply chain issues,” recalls general contractor Rick Hall. “For example, we needed the bowling alley’s components delivered and installed before we could even start framing the first floor above.”

Tomaro steered the abode’s design toward a simpler, more contemporary look than the traditional house the clients had originally envisioned. “We tried to minimize the amount of detailing so it would feel lighter and more streamlined,” he explains. “It worked its way into a cleaner, more modern style as we went.” On the lower level, steel-framed windows and doors finished in a deep gray to soften their industrial aesthetic blur the line between indoors and out. “You really feel like you’re part of the landscape,” enthuses Tomaro.

And the open, inviting interiors are flooded with light. “There’s some separation between the rooms, but they’re not the small, compartmentalized spaces you sometimes see on the East Coast,” notes King, who worked closely with her firm’s lead designer, Jen Hart, throughout the project. “You still have a sense of flow and discovery.” That easy rhythm is amplified by a subtle repetition of materials and colors. “The idea was to have a classic home, but with modern elements that could withstand time,” remarks King. “It’s a casual and sophisticated coastal house, with a flexible design plan that won’t go out of style.”

Indeed, given the family’s penchant for entertaining, durability was key. Tumbledlimestone flooring was chosen for its ability to ride out the antics of children and the family’s energetic pack of dogs. Antiques hold pride of place for the same reason: nicks and scratches can only enhance their patina. A simple palette of serene white, taupe, brown and delicate robin’s egg blue grounds the home, while wood paneling— and carpentry by O’Rourke Construction Inc. throughout—emphasizes its warmth.

Upstairs, King enlivened this tranquil assortment of hues and materials with wallpapers and tiles. Meanwhile, the subterranean level’s moodiness is underscored by Douglas fir, textured brown paint and raw brick. “It feels like you’re heading into a private club,” King comments with a smile. Her enthusiasm extends to the whole residence. “It’s welcoming, comfortable and a half-mile from one of L.A.’s best beaches. It’s kind of a unicorn in this neighborhood. What more could you want?”

Bet the Ranch

Key contemporary moments freshen up the Mediterranean style of a family’s ground-up equestrian compound in North County.

Architecture: Christian Rice, Christian Rice Architects, Inc. Interior Design: Kellie McCormick, McCormick & Wright The entry of this Rancho Santa Fe home features an arched front door hand-carved on-site by Roland Diriczi. Vintage barnwood from Akovash Hardwood adds warmth and patina to the floors and ceiling. Gibson Lighting fabricated the hammered-iron tiered chandelier and sconces.

Restrictions can sometimes be a surprising pathway to creativity. Take this Rancho Santa Fe property in a historic neighborhood subject to strict environmental restrictions and Spanish-Mediterranean architectural guidelines.

There, plans for crafting a Mediterranean Revivalstyle home from the ground up required the design team, a highly-collaborative partnership between interior designer Kellie McCormick and architect Christian Rice, to create their own playbook. For one thing, a large portion of the sprawling estate lay within a centuryold floodplain upon which construction was prohibited. Other sections were too steeply sloped for building. And, since the owners had purchased undeveloped land, everything from setting up utilities to creating basic infrastructure was on the table. But the starting-from-scratch effort was well worth it: “This residence is magical and feels so secluded,” McCormick declares.

The area’s architectural specifications, coupled with the clients’ desire for bright, open spaces that would feel fresh and current, drove the design of the main home and its surrounding structures. To achieve this balance, Rice fused iconic features of Spanish-Mediterranean style with more contemporary elements. One example is the pocketing door systems whose lengthy openings help the home engage with the stunning landscape around it. “That’s the challenge with homes like this,” he reflects. “How do you stay within classic architecture yet infuse it with modern-day elements in an artful way?”

The very dynamic of simplicity belying complexity defines this ambitious project, which includes a large primary home for the family of five, a pool-and-guest house, as well as a separate two-bedroom residence and a row of horse stables. The low-slung structures— especially the pool house with its portico—echo early works by the late master of California ranch house architecture, Cliff May, but updated for contemporary lifestyles. “There’s a beauty to their simplicity,” Rice posits of the series of buildings. “These structures have a minimalist nature, but the details really enhance them.”

In the main structure, the goal was to “keep this abode comfortable and inviting, with a casual feel,”

McCormick explains. “We started with concepts of how to implement textures in an authentic way.”

To wit, the entryway features a custom oversize wood door that was hand-carved on-site and leads into the voluminous yet welcoming space. Contemporary shade sconces flank the doorway while a tiered iron chandelier distills the essence of Spanish and Mediterranean Revival style. More models of this striking fixture reappear in the great room. “We kept them light but with a hammered texture, not ornate by any means, and definitely not overwhelming despite their scale,” McCormick notes. To bring in more warmth and history, the designer also sourced patinated materials, including an antique French limestone fireplace surround, vintage barnwood ceiling treatments in areas like the foyer and library, or the dining patio’s reclaimed European brick.

Despite featuring such classic Mediterranean Revival elements as arched window openings, the interior doorways are deliberately rectilinear. “Those deep, squared openings create a clean look that leads you into the next volume of space,” McCormick says, pointing to the great room and its retractable—and very modern—pocket doors that allow for a seamless flow outdoors. The designer also customized sofas scaled to the room, and upholstered a set of distinctive, tall wing chairs with a bold stripe. “I wanted to play with the heights of some key pieces, but I didn’t want the room to feel overly packed with furnishings,” she explains of this array of seating arrangements that create plenty of moments for gathering, socializing and relaxing.

To make the expansive outdoor areas both beautiful and functional, McCormick and Rice played off the schematics of landscape architect George Mercer to define different living spaces. A charming outdoor kitchen illuminated by rustic, custom copper pendants takes full advantage of the area’s pleasant climate. And designing the structure containing horse stables and stalls allowed for expressive moments through barn door details, colors and finishes. “It was another opportunity to get down to the core of Spanish style,” Rice says, pointing out the pared-back roof structure exposing the clay tile and highlighting its unique materiality. “Overall, we were doing complex things, but always tried to make them feel effortless and comfortable,” McCormick adds. “And I believe we succeeded.”

Raw & Refined

A sculptor challenges Los Angeles’ long-standing ceramics tradition by celebrating the very nature of clay.

LUXESOURCE.COM

Clay in its most primitive, visceral state is what artist Beverly Morrison strives to honor.

“It’s the flesh of the earth with its own language, personality and rules,” she says of her favored material. But she’s not throwing pots or making mugs. Instead, she’s creating bold, expressive fine art sculptures of raw clay that highlight its natural texture and characteristics.

“Los Angeles has had a long love affair with abstract painting on clay, but my work doesn’t use it as a canvas,” she states. “I’m not a ceramicist either—I consider myself a ‘ceramic sculptor.’ ”

Her approach caught the eye of visionary L.A.-based curator Joel Chen, who brought her pieces into both of his renowned JF Chen showrooms about a year ago. Morrison, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree from California State University, Long Beach, credits a study trip to Florence, Italy, as what honed her interest in sculpture. But it was seeing the minimalist works of acclaimed

20th-century British sculptors Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth that gave her purpose. “How do you say so much with so little?” she posits. “I strive to create the same silent drama that I feel in their work.” A 2012 trip to Japan introduced her to raw clay and to gestural movement that reminded her of contemporary French painter Fabienne Verdier’s brushwork. “That’s what artists do,” Morrison says. “We take in all kinds of inspiration and make it our own.”

Using recipes she refined after working with architectural ceramicists Peter King and Stan Bitters, mixing her own clay creates for Morrison a soul-satisfying connection to the earth. “This material is all about reality,” she notes. After sketching out ideas, the artist rolls out slabs, cuts them into strips and begins manipulating and building her pieces, “much like a carpenter” she says. Each collection varies, with creations ranging from sculptures to vessels to wall art. But her use of texture, movement and clean lines remains a constant. Her “Mountain” vessels, for example, are beaten with wood planks before she applies a liquefied type of clay called “slip” for a

dripped effect. Her “White and Gold” pieces are also brushed with slip before she adds a glaze that she swirls with her fingers. “I only use glaze to enhance gestural expression,” she explains. “Otherwise, I feel like it smothers and suffocates the material and distracts from the forms I spend so much time creating.”

Deeply attuned to nature, Morrison lets the changing seasons, from temperature to daylight, influence her practice. “Living life is part of the creative process,” she comments. That flexibility has given space to new ventures, such as “The Midnight Garden,” a series using black clay. Exclusive works will be featured this winter at Vessels + Sticks, an online contemporary ceramics gallery. The artist will also see a brand-new lighting collection of hers debut in the spring of 2023. “It satisfies my practical side,” she quips.

But what Morrison wants most is for her creations, which she’s dubbed “modern-day relics,” to spark contemplation. “I want my ‘clay children’ to inspire, but also to help people get back in touch with that primal aspect of themselves that they may have forgotten,” she reflects.

Sculptor Beverly Morrison (opposite) works with raw clay, focusing on its natural texture and form. From fine art sculptures to vessels and even lighting fixtures (left and bottom), her ideas all start in sketchbooks (below)—she carries as many as six of them daily between home and her downtown L.A. studio.

An Irvine renovation pushes the boundaries of traditional

CLASSIC

A NEW

The exterior of this Spanish Colonial-style home in Irvine received a refresh thanks to a coat of Benjamin Moore’s White Dove. The modern sconce lantern is from Visual Comfort.

Arched doorways, exposed beams and iron lanterns may be hallmarks of traditional Tuscan and Spanish Colonial-style homes, but the renovation of this Irvine abode made way for a much more contemporary iteration of the classics. Designer Rachel Morrison reimagined the ornate 2000s-era residence with a brighter, more current feel thanks to such elements as cherry wood floors lightened to a medium tone, edgy artwork in smooth wall niches, and custom lanterns with updated lines to name just a few. The overall effect pays tribute to architectural tradition while providing a stunning backdrop for sculptural furnishings, bold lighting and modern, graphic wallcoverings.

“We wanted to give it a fresher, cheerier look that better matched the personality of our clients,” says Rachel, who served as the project’s senior designer under principal Denise Morrison. The residents, who were relatives of earlier clients of the firm, acknowledged—and appreciated—that the house was in excellent condition when they took ownership. “The shell of this home was fantastic to work with,” Rachel recalls.

To tackle some architectural updates, general contractors Tom Moore and Jake Lara came aboard. The refinished floors, simplified fire surrounds and coats of white paint brought the house a long way, notes Moore. And so did tearing out heavy built-ins and a wall that used to connect the kitchen with a family room. For improved visual appeal and function, the team reoriented and rearranged the kitchen. “We moved all of the appliances and the sink to another location, added more windows and created a new pantry space,” says Moore. “It was the biggest change and the most impactful one,” adds Rachel. Rift-cut white oak cabinetry with glass panels features arches that echo an existing motif throughout the house, while clean lines keep the aesthetic current.

The residence is organized around a central courtyard and includes both a front and rear loggia, as well as patios. So when it came to planning how rooms would be used within such an expansive space, Rachel gave especially careful consideration to function. To wit, the living room is designed around a baby grand piano, while the lower level’s lounge-like theater,

with its playful fuchsia sofa, is the designated space for gathering to watch a movie.

The home’s newly streamlined interior architecture showcases the contemporary furnishings that its owners gravitated toward. “They had a fun style that leaned a little more unexpected, and we were all on board with that,” says Rachel. One case in point is the living room, where a deep, low-slung angular sectional in a beige hue—one of many custom, fine-tuned pieces by House of Morrison throughout the home—offsets the organic shapes of nesting leather-and-wood coffee tables that fit together like puzzle pieces. Meanwhile, the curvy piano echoes the room’s arches and other soft shapes. And, behind the sofa, an accent wall covered in a rust-colored cork wallpaper faces the fireplace and brings a touch of metallic glamour with its large-scale gold motif.

This subtle balance of curves and angles continues throughout the home. A stackedwood coffee table in an undulating shape sits at the center of the family room, for instance, while a concrete freestanding tub in the primary bedroom’s bath contrasts with a rectilinear shower. And in the dining area, an airy, mobilelike chandelier hangs in delicate suspense over the straight lines of a wood-and-metal table.

“Lighting makes such an impact,” comments Rachel, whose fixture selections fold in another layer of artistry, be it through sleek lanterns or the eye-catching orbs of Apparatus’ Cloud pendant in the living room. Specific color choices within a jewel-inspired palette proved key as well. The homeowners love color, especially reds, yellows and greens. The designers decided to tone down the hues’ vibrance by choosing shades that were a bit greyed out or “muddied”—the kind you’d find in nature, explains Rachel. The result is a sophisticated mix of rust, ochre and moss green with “a nice grounding quality,” she says.

The residence now captures the taste of its residents, Rachel believes. “We always push our clients to make their home more individualized,” she explains—and these owners embraced that, and even took some risks. A perfect example is the dining room, whose lighting fixtures “landed a little more design-forward,” she notes. That’s what the family wanted. “ ‘We’ll smile every time we walk into that room!’ ” Rachel remembers them enthusiastically telling her. “And as a designer, that’s exactly what you want to hear.”
