David Gunn defines success as “walking away from a project knowing we built a home that will be around for generations.” After graduating with a degree in construction science from Texas A&M University, Gunn spent 12 years honing his skills with a custom home builder in Houston. Then in 2007, he launched Gunn Construction, a general contracting firm that today employs 16 team members and manages upwards of 12 projects at a time. What makes Gunn Construction stand out is its seamless collaborations with architects and interior designers. “We approach each project as a unique home, and the quality of thought and work put into each project is at a very high level,” Gunn says. As a father of twin boys, Gunn isn’t just building homes that will last for years to come— he’s also creating a legacy so that if they choose, his sons can be a part of the business one day.
PILLARS FOR SUCCESS Gunn shares the secrets to his thriving firm. •S elect a solid team from employees to subcontractors and vendors. •D emand excellence and hold high standards for your team. They know what I expect, so everyone works as a team to make each project the best it can be. •R emain calm and listen. The clients want to be heard. •D ive deep into the details of a project. I know our projects in detail. I know what the drawings show, what the designers have specified and the intention of their vision. •B e willing to back up and redo or rework a project, and remember things don’t always go right the first time, especially with detailed custom work.
