LOVELAND CASTLE
FUN BEGIN

hat do one of the world’s largest entertainment centers in the U.S., the world’s only cardboard boat racing museum and the world headquarters of the Knights of the Golden Trail all have in common? They can all be found in Clermont County! Scene75, The Cardboard Boat Museum and Chateau LaRoche, more commonly known as Loveland Castle, are only three of the fun and unique family attractions you’ll find in this county that borders eastern Cincinnati.
With so much to see and do, the last thing you’ll hear from the kids are the words, “I’m bored.” There is something for everyone from tiny tots to teenagers and all ages in between. If a laid-back getaway is what you have in mind, you’ll find plenty of outdoor spaces in Clermont County. When it comes to boat construction, cardboard isn’t normally thought of as the material of choice, but in New Richmond you’ll find a museum focused entirely of boats made of this component. The Cardboard Boat Museum serves as the headquarters for the International Cardboard Boat Regatta which is held on the Ohio River each August. The family-friendly event draws participants from around the world. With awards for speed, crowd favorite and the best sinking or “Titanic Award,” you know you’re in for a fun day.

Along the banks of the Little Miami River is a fascinating castle modeled after those found in Europe. And like those constructed during medieval times, the Chateau LaRoche was also built by hand. Harry D. Andrews, a WWI veteran, Boy Scout Leader and a Medieval scholar, took 50-years to build Loveland Castle for his Boy Scout Troop that he dubbed the Knights of the Golden Trail. You won’t want to miss this stop, especially if you have a little boy who dreams of knighthood. The Cincinnati Nature Center in Milford provides many opportunities to connect with nature. Visit the Nature PlayScape for hours of open-ended play as your child interacts with their natural surroundings or stop by the Rowe Visitor Center and pick up a scavenger hunt on a variety of topics or borrow one of the Children’s Adventure Packs which are carefully curated packs to inspire your child’s natural love of nature. You’ll also find letterboxing, geocaching and over 14 miles of hiking trails, including one that is all-accessible and easy for strollers to maneuver and several others that are great for little hikers.
When you’re ready to explore beyond the county, a short 15-30 minute drive will have you at the door of many of Cincinnati’s top family attractions.

DARING ESCAPES & HEROIC EFFORTS:
AMERICA AT ITS BEST
ew places share Clermont Country’s strong connection to the F American Civil War and our country’s legacy of freedom. Much of that legacy lies within the complex network of secret trails, hiding spaces, safe houses, and brave people who made up what we now know as the Underground Railroad. Our unique home was the pathway to freedom for thousands of enslaved people who were aided by sympathetic local residents, abolitionists, and allies. Clermont is home to dozens of major Underground Railroad sites, with 19 bearing the National Park Service’s Underground Railroad Network to Freedom logo. These important sites along the Ohio River help tell our story of bravery and compassion, a story we are committed to preserving and sharing. Read on to start planning your Clermont County Freedom Trail experience. Clusters of the trail are accessible on foot, while other parts necessitate that you travel by car. Whether you plan to spend a day or more, you’ll find endless ways to learn about one of America’s greatest humanitarian endeavors—and along the way, you’ll find plenty of spots to pause and soak up the sights, sounds, and emotions still palpable in this region today.

BEFORE YOU GO
NATIONAL UNDERGROUND RAILROAD FREEDOM CENTER
Now that you have everything you need, start your day in the historic river town of New Richmond. FOLLOW THE RIVER Close your eyes as you envision this scenic waterway as the active port it was for 19th-century
commerce. Make your way to the residences of prominent abolitionists Reverend George C. Light and Dr. John Rogers. Pick up a commemorative copy of The Philanthropist newspaper, and peruse the placards outside Cranston Memorial Presbyterian Church, an important historical meeting place for local abolitionists. Break for lunch at Front Street Café, then visit the birthplace of 18th U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant before venturing on to the home of Robert E. Fee, a local abolitionist who famously helped rescue enslaved woman Fanny Wigglesworth and her four children. Note the windows at Fee Villa, where the glow of lit candles once signaled safe harbor for refugees crossing over from Kentucky. As you continue along the Ohio River Scenic Byway, remember to reflect on the daily slave auctions that once took place just across the river, opposite sites like the John Parker House and the John Rankin House on the overlook bluffs of historic Ripley, Ohio. 14

The Little Miami River Runs Through It
Don’t be fooled by the word “little” because the splendid stream that meanders through Clermont County delivers big-time fun for dog lovers. Boasting national and state scenic river status, the Little Miami is ideal for everything from strolling on the Little Miami Scenic Trail, a legendary hiking and biking path that follows the river for miles, to canoeing, kayaking and fishing at Little Miami State Park, the popular and picturesque greenspace that overlaps it.
Bond with Your Bestie at East Fork State Park and Williamsburg
With rolling terrain and a sprawling lake fed by a branch of the Little Miami River, East Fork is one of Ohio’s largest state parks and a great spot for fresh air and exercise with Fido. The lake has open water for boating plus secluded coves for kayaking and dogs are welcome at the campground, where you can rent kayaks and bicycles, sign up for naturalist-led hikes and even watch movies on Saturday night. The park’s extensive trails are a magnet for geocachers and lead to local landmarks — including an ancient Indian mound and 1860s church — that hint at Clermont County’s rich history. A short drive from the campground, the village of Williamsburg dates to 1796 and has a highly walkable downtown with historic stone buildings and indie shops. Stop at Holtman’s Donut, a southwest Ohio fan favorite and select a unique and creative treat for you and your pup. On your next stop in this charming town, pick up a delicious made-from-scratch pie from Main Street Pizza.

So many people bring four-legged friends to Cincinnati Nature Center that it has an admission fee — $2 — for dogs. Brimming with Mother Nature’s eye candy, this 1,000-acre preserve boasts 16 miles of hiking trails. Three of the best for dogs are Edge Trail, which encircles a lake; Upland Trail, which features a mature forest; and Discovery Trail, which includes forests, fields and ponds. Tip: register your dog and get a drink at Rowe Visitor Center, where an outdoor fountain comes complete with a bowl that’s just the right height for lapping up water.

Loveland Loves Its Doggone Good Trail
Loveland so fervently embraces its stretch of the Little Miami Scenic Trail that many folks simply call it the Loveland Bike Trail. Once a railroad junction, Loveland converted abandoned tracks into a wide and easily accessible trail that skirts the Little Miami River and brings a steady stream of cyclists, skaters, joggers, nature lovers, people watchers and dog walkers into the heart of its historic downtown. On weekends, Loveland practically turns into a dog park, and since many eateries offer patio or sidewalk dining, it’s easy to eat, drink and delight in the town’s friendly, laid-back vibe with a puppy pal. Options range from the New Orleans-style cuisine and cocktails at Bishop’s Quarter to pub grub at Paxton’s Grill to handcrafted desserts — including yogurt-based dog ice cream — at Loveland Sweet Shoppe. Along the bike trail itself, both Lyle’s Bikes, Brews & BBQ and Narrow Path Brewing Co. provide casual fare, good beer and shady backyard tables where customers — and canines — happily mix and mingle.
OFFICIAL VISITORS GUIDE
Bordering the Little Miami River and its namesake Scenic Trail, Milford is a hub for outdoor activities and has the added attraction of a Victorian downtown that combines specialty shops and restaurants with a designated outdoor refreshment area (DORA) for consuming alcoholic drinks alfresco. Milford’s hillside trailhead overlooks the town and river, and just across the Mill Street bridge sits the Little Miami Brewing Company, where you can hang out with your tail-wagger at the patio or beer garden and feast on hand-tossed pizzas and small-batch beers. On nearby Main Street, outdoor seating at Padrino (a fave for Italian food) lets you dine with doggie from morning to night. Optimize both of your trail and river experiences with the float coats, hydration packs and other doggie gear available at Roads Rivers and Trails (a.k.a. RRT), but when it’s reward time, go to Old Milford Parlor for ice cream and dog biscuits or Tickled Sweet chocolate shop for allnatural pupcakes.

FROM FARM TO TABLE
& EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN
Celebrating Clermont’s Modern-Rural Legacy
W
ith its quaint villages surrounded by rolling green hills and fertile riverbeds, Clermont County’s relationship to the land is undeniable. And as the “farm to table” craze continues, foodies in Clermont are doing their part to preserve that agricultural tradition by producing and sourcing as much as they can locally—everything from beef and broccoli to haloumi and hops. A perfect example is Bite Restaurant in Milford. In its eighth year serving the local community, Bite is deeply committed to scratch cooking and food education, serving up dishes for every culinary and dietary persuasion. Bite offers vegetarian/ vegan and gluten-free options, plus traditional fare for carnivores and omnivores alike. Like many Clermont eateries, Bite’s menu centers on organic fruits, veggies, nuts, herbs, honey, and flowers produced directly on the premises, as well as meats, eggs, and other ingredients sourced from nearby partners.
Here’s a look at just some of the local products you’ll find lining shelves, pantries, and tables across Clermont County. Fresh Markets | From roadside stands to beloved community gathering spaces, you’ll find farmers’ markets of every size and scope in Clermont, including Shaw Farms, Loveland Farmers’ Market, Newtown Farmers’ Market, and Simmons Farm. TCC Berry Farm and Blooms & Berries are two more places visitors can reap the benefits of sun and soil all year round. Get your goats’ milk soap and lotion from Honey Sweetie Farms, and while you’re there, grab a yoga class alongside their Nigerian Dwarf Goats. Freshly relaxed, you can venture over to The Marmalade Lily to purchase—or pick!—fresh flowers for your summer table. 28
Fruits & Veggies | One of the last remaining family farms in eastern Cincinnati, 190acre Valley View is home to a community garden where more than 60 individuals work the land together, growing and harvesting a wide variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and flowers throughout the year.
DISCOVERCLERMONT.COM
Poultry & Eggs | Clermont residents and visitors can enjoy farm-fresh eggs and poultry from providers like Woodbottom Farms in Bethel and Phillips Farm in Batavia, offering chicken, duck, turkey, pheasant, and quail that are certified free from commercial herbicides, pesticides, antibiotics, and growth hormones.
FARM TO TABLE
Beer & Wine | Many of Clermont’s top beer and wine makers—such as Harmony Hill Vineyards—produce their own source materials directly onsite. Others source quality hops from growers in and around Clermont, such as Scott Farms and Ohio Valley Hops, making it possible to raise a glass of Ohio’s best any time of year.
Meats | 132-acre Emmett Ridge Farm in New Richmond has long raised sustainable beef, heritage breed pork, free range poultry and eggs, and fresh produce. In recent years, the family-owned farm has expanded to hosts weddings, corporate events, and parties.
