Experience your own personal winter fairytale on the romantic Rhine during Advent and visit some of the most romantic Christmas markets in Germany and France. This round trip starts and finishes in Cologne. We travel south up the Rhine to Mainz and Speyer with their Christmas lights, and you can pay a visit to the enchanting town of Heidelberg before we reach Alsace in France. You’ll be captivated by the snowy riverscapes with their pre-Christmas charm, and a visit to the city of Strasbourg is a must. It quickly becomes clear why at this time of the year this impressive city is known as the ‘Capitale de Noël’ (capital of Christmas). The centre contains 12 romantic Christmas markets dating back to the 16th century. After this stop, we continue downstream to the delightful town of Rüdesheim, where you can pay a visit to ‘Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Museum’ and enjoy a stroll through the festive illuminations of the Christmas market before returning to Cologne the next morning, where your winter trip comes to an end.
Nuremberg – Passau – Vienna v.v. 7-day cruise
Over the Christmas period the magnificent Danube towns and their traditional Christmas markets are a popular destination for people from all over the world. Nuremberg in particular, the starting point for this winter cruise, is renowned for its ‘Christkindlesmarkt’, one of the oldest and most famous Christmas markets in the world. Here you’ll find traditional crafts as well as hand-made winter decorations and the world-famous Nuremberg Lebkuchen (gingerbread). On your first evening you can enjoy an atmospheric Advent concert on board your AMADEUS vessel, adorned with Christmas decorations, before we set off downstream for Regensburg and the three rivers town of Passau. After a trip through the wintry cultivated landscapes of Wachau, we reach Austria’s capital Vienna which shows off its best side during Advent. During your stay a visit to the centre of Vienna with all its Christmas decorations is a must, especially the Schönbrunn Palace whose wooden stands sparkle almost as brightly as the Christmas tree in the courtyard. Your last evening on board includes a gala dinner followed by a festive Advent concert on board, before your vessel heads for Vienna and the end of the cruise the next morning.
