These three words sum up the feelings the '97 seniors have as they are recognized as the first four-year class to graduate from Northeast.
Now that they look back on that late summer day in 1993, they're glad to see that they are the first four-year class to enter and exit Northeast. For them, they are Creating a New Legacy.

NORTH-EAST, NORTH-EAST, was the chant of the varsity football team as they walked out onto the field for this year's Booster Blastoff. The festivities were held on September 4th in the north gym parking lot. The activities included lots of games and booths. Some of the games were a dunk tank and the Strutters made some money by putting people in jail. If you were hungry, there were a lot of munchies to snack on. KFRX D.J.,A.J. Ryder, was also there with some music. Many students joined in on the" Macarena." Later on in the evening everyone gathered down on the fields to meet the fall sports teams. The band, Strutters and the cheerleaders also performed.
"Booster Blastoff is a great time for everybody to show their school spirit," senior Nicole Tooker said. After meeting the teams, most people stayed for the Black-White Volleyball game. It was the second year for the Booster Blastoff and the attendance was much higher.

pirit Week is a time to show support for our school. But compared to past years, participation was down. Those who did dress up did a great job and went all out to show their spirit. "Freshmen dressed up the most out of all the grades," said varsity cheerleader Kacy Standley."!

Spirit Week included Pajama Day, Hippie Day, and Boxer Day. Varsity Cheerleaders have to have days approved . Despite this, they tried to come up with the most traditional and original ideas. Many of the dress up days LNE has had in the past. We did have a new day this year, Opposite Sex Day. Unfortunately, it was cancelled early in the week. "Students didn't have area-

Some suggestions to get students more involved were to have different days, get teachers more involved and to publicize more. "We just need more spirit," commented Roberts.

Many changes took place for the students. The new ninth graders had to adapt to a bigger school and more people. However, there would be more opportunities for all the
sports earlier in their high school years. Also, they are able to have a wider selection of class choices.
Expections of all the Northeast students increased, starting with the seniors who were to be more of a role model and
ending with the freshman who felt they needed to grow up faster.
Therefore, Creating A New Legac y , has dramatically changed and shaped Northeast in the past and will continue in the future.
The theme selected for this year's ROCKET had the 1997 senior class in mind.

" When is club day?" That was a very common question this year among the Northeast students. Well this year, yes, the schedule was changed again. Club Day was supposed to be on the first Wednesday of every month. The students were to sign up for a club then they would get the blue "club ·day pass."
Many students seemed to like the new schedule. Of course we liked it, we got out of class!! Some of the teachers didn't seem to like it though. On Club days the teachers were -not supposed to teach any new material, so sometimes that made them fall behind.
Despite the confusing schedules, · the clubs this year were a great success!! In all, there were 45 clubs that met on Club Day. They ranged from FBLA to Word Game Club to Russian Club. The student turnout was much better than last year! The new schedule was a good way to get the students more involved with extracurricular activities.

The purpose of the Drama Improvisation club is to become more comfortable performing, more at ease on stage, to develop improvisation techniques and discover new characters. Most important of all, to have fun.
Highlights for the club are the creativity and enthusiasm of the members, which is a total of 70, and the number of students interested Mr.Chapman has a difficulty meeting once a month because the time is limited. The club has improved little by little at every meet20/Drama Improvisation ing, and that's all that matters.

Having only 11 members , Russian Club is one the smaller clubs at Northeast.
The students watch Russian films and then translate what was said. Greg Butcher said , "The club is fun because you learn about the Russian culture."
Being such a small club, the kids said it makes it easier to discuss and socialize. B.J. Prochaska said, " It's interesting
to see the different kinds of movies that they have."
One member of the club, Alex Podany, was born in Russia and is a fluent Russian speaker. When he was asked what he liked best about the club Alex said , "the videos."
The sponsor of Russian club is Mrs. Toftul, who is also the Russian teacher. The students said she makes the club exciting and a lot of fun and they learn so much.

FCA-Fellowship of Christian Athletes, having approximately 200 members, is one of the largest clubs at Northeast. You don't have to be an athlete to join although the majority of the members do participate in a sport.
Vice President Kathy Weber says, "The club is based around living for Christ."
FCA tries to have different speakers come and talk to the students about how God has changed their lives. Starting quarterback for the Nebraska
Cornhuskers,Scott Frost,came and talked about how God has changed his life. He was quite an inspiration.
"Being around other Christi ans makes serving God easier," said senior Bethany Johnson.
Ginger Venhaus is the President this year. Venhaus is in charge of organizing the different group activities for the students.

Multi-Cultural Dance Troupe Club was a big hit for being its first year. It was sponsored by Mr. Christe. Some of the student leaders included Celeste Lawson, Franchesca Meton, Roslyn Lewis, and Shemiah Rollie. These leaders put together different dances, each from a different culture. Lawson and Rollie made up dances that were R&B, Meton was in charge of latin dances.
Then after the leaders made up a dance, they taught it to
the other members. The club performed at the Bridging the Gap assembly. " It was a good experience, and I'm glad we got to show everybody dances from all different cultures," Lawson said. The Multicultural Dance was a good club because it helped students to learn about different cultures while getting the chance to strut their stuff. "While we get down, we learn all about different cultures," said junior Jerrad Allen.

ashing through the snow. This is exactly what most of the members of the Fun Runners did at the Jingle Bell Run. The members dressed up, and carried a sled they had made for five miles.
Most people would asume that the members in this club run a lot. They probably do at home, but at the meetings, they learn about winter training tips, healthy eating, and some fun ways to get in shape. Some of the time they have special speakers and guests.
Lori Simpson said, "I really enjoy this club, it is a great way to meet new people."

"There are two kinds of people in this world, people who think about doing it, and there are people who do it. Ecologist are people who do it," lzel RivasSanchez said. The people in the Ecology club are definitely part of the people who do it.
This year's club was very involved in activities around Northeast. You ·know all those black trash cans that are in
classrooms? Each one of those are there for a reason. One of them could be for white paper, the other probably is for colored paper. The bins for aluminum cans are also provided by this club. During the year, the main goal for this club was to get bins for 20 oz. plastic bottles. They plan to put them beside the aluminum can bins.
The main reason for this club is to protect and preserve the environment. "The Ecology club 's plan is to promote and then take action, " Sanchez said. "We want to make a difference! "

Science Olympiad is a fun club for those who are interested in the area of science.
In this club, they have quiz bowls in which the Science Olympiad members enter. In these competitions, some of theevents include the areas of Science, Genetics, Biology, and chemistry. In the quiz bowls, they placed 9th, out of 27 teams.
The club meets once a month to speak with the sponsors about the different competitions within Nebraska. At these meetings,
the sponsors try and prepare the members for the quiz bowls.
Besides having the quiz bowls, members also do experiments.
"It's really a lot of fun. We get to make bottle rockets, egg traps and many other things, Sara Soulliere said. "Southeast is one of our biggest competitions, and we're hoping to overcome them."

'96-97 was the first year for the P.O.W.E.R. Club. It met once a month and members talked about women's rights and their roles in society. Lelani Lahm was voted by her fellow students to be the President.
"The club is a good way to help young men and women explore equality in the workplace , schools, homes, and in our society," Lahm said. They also talk about feminism. The P.O.W.E.R. club isn't just for women.
Ms. Melanie Mariman sponsored P.O.W.E.R. club, hoping to find it successful enough to continue.
Carrie Delano said, "It's a very eye-opening club."
This club helps young women explore their opportunities that they are able to do in today's male dominated society.
At one of the meetings they had a self-defense instructor come to the club and help teach them how to protect themselves.
"Power club helped me be more aware of my surroundings," commented Maria Skudlarek.

Future Teachers is a club for students that have an interest in teaching. At the meetings they learn about the total involvement of teaching.
"Teaching is not just about teaching the students, you have to be able to relate to the students," senior Mindy Lemon said. The students also learn about what kind of school-
ing that they would have to receive in order to become a teacher.
The students also helped at Teacher Appreciation Day. They also got the opportunity to job shadow a teacher. They also went to one of the new elememtary schools to help get a feel for teaching.
At one of the meetings, a couple of students from Nebraska Wesleyan came and talked about the different levels of classes in the teaching program.
" I liked the club because it gave me some experience and it will be helpful for when I become a teacher," Lemon said.

With the help of Toni Siedel and David Smith, GLBSA (Gay Lesbian Bisexual Straight Alliance) is moving along stronger than ever before. This year 's club has 15 to 20 more members than last year's club.
This year's GLBSA club took part in helping with the " Pride Prom," which turned out to be a huge success. The club also boycotted against the armed forces recruiting in high schools.
Aside from all the hard work they do for the club, they also get together once a week for lunch.
At the club meetings they usually watch movies, discuss the issues and listen to speakers. " GLBSA is about learning and understanding that people are people, and they deserve respect no matter what their sexual orientation may be," Destiny Fonville said.

This is the second year for Red Cross club here at Northeast. They do a variety of different tilings for our school and community. Such as picking up trash around the neighborhood and scooping people's driveways.
With only 15 members Red Cross is one of our smaller clubs sponsored by Bill Zetterman.

Rachel is the President and is in charge of organizing th volunteer work for the members.
Being based off the American Red Cross they work hard to improve way of life. The students offer CPR classes, first aid training, and are raising money for Red Cross camp this summer.

Future Business Leaders of America is recognized nationwide by progressive businesses. The members are involved in a variety of activities throughout the year. One of the favorite activities this year was working with Sugar Spoon Cheesecakes. There, the members wrapped cheesecakes and boxed them up. •
Mike Honnens says he wants to be in the business field when he gets older and it's good to meet other people with the same interests.
The main purpose of the
club is. to promote involvement in the business world and that's just what they do. They participated in the National Fall Leadership Conference in Kansas City, State Leadership Conference in Omaha, Crete Competition Day and area meetings at local schools. Some members volunteer their time working concessions to earn money for the club, which hopes to be going to Kansas City. Jessica Fujan says, "FBLA is a good club to get experience in dealing with business."

This year's ABC, (All Because of Christ) was very busy this year. The students in this club talk about the different issues in society, and then try to find ways to solve them from a Christian point of view.
Some of the issues they talked about included abortion, the death penalty, and others that affect the lives of teenagers in our society.
The ABC club also participated in "See you at the Pole." This involves students standing around the school's flag pole and praying for the students at their school.
The club is a place to talk with other Christians about important issues. Charity Dilbeck said, "I really enjoy the opportunity to be around other Christians at school."

Campus Life is a new club which started this year. This club is a group of students who come together to discuss and share their Christianity.
"We all come together and have fun and play fun games ," says sophomore Trey Murrell. Junior Dan Justin agreed. "Campus Life is just a whole lot of fun,"Justin said.
Campus Life is usually found in the auditorium on club days. The sponsors of Campus Life are alumni Angie Smith and
Chad Bautch. This is their first year as leaders together, but they have been volunteer leaders for a couple of years.
Some of the games which have been played in Campus Life are Wheel of Fortune, The Price is Right , and watching videos.

T.A.G. (Talented and Gifted) had a great year. They had many motivational speakers come to their club. These motivational speakers were supposed to teach the students how to use their full potential at everything they do.
To be in TAG, you have to be enrolled in AP or diff classes. At one of the meetings the students learned the qualities of a gifted person. Some of those qualities were, tenacity and hard work.
The club this year made two field trips. For one of them they went to UNL's Love Library. They usually take a field trip every semester.
The two sponsors were Sharon Holliday and Marge Rudd-Hillhouse. The club meets twice on club day, once for freshman and sophomores, the other for juniors and seniors.

The Math Club at Northeast was very competitive this year. It competed at four different competitions at four surrounding colleges and universities: Creighton , University of Nebraska , Hastings , and Midland. Besides competing, the Math Club also helped provide two math tests for other students. Those tests were The AVPAC ,
and the AHSME ( American High School Math Exam )
At the meetings , the club usually does the AVPAC tests. They also talked about the upcoming competitions. To prepare for the competitions, Bill Rogge would have the students take practice tests. Most of the tests were the tests that the students took last year.

The tests that they take cover all of math , but you don't have to be a genious in math to join. Said Patrick Sampson: "This club has helped me a lot in my math classes, and will help me in my future."

Difference Makers was made up of 26 members. These members were elected by at least two teachers that thought they would be good for the club.
The Difference Makers met once a month on club days. They learned about how to become leaders. "We would do activities that would help us become bet-
ter leaders for the future," junior Matt Curtis said. The activities also helped them to be better listeners and speakers.
Besides the meetings, they also went to middle schools and helped the eight graders for ninth grade registration.
President Tiare Horswill said, "Being in Difference Makers, I learned to be a leader, not a follower."

A new club at Northeast this year was Friends of Rock and Rap, sponsored by John Skretta. It included 21 members. Students talked about different types of rock and rap and what they liked. At their monthly meetings they brought in cd's and would listen to them and talk about the different forms of music.
The purpose of bringing in different forms of music was to introduce new music to each other and also see how it reflects on cultures They talked about the different music awards, music events,
and concerts in Lincoln that went on throughout the year.
Also, students such as Rich Stripling, Justin Tianjco, and Andrew "Dogboy". Wenzl brought in their guitars and played for the class. Justin Webster rapped at a few of their meetings and they listened to a few of their demo tapes.
The main purpose of the club was just trying to find a common ground in the two different forms of music.
"Music has a culture of its own; different forms of music are like their own culture," Ryan Neff.
"Because we are right and we know it."

This years Teenage Republicans were very busy this year. The club consists of members. The president is Evan Kuchera. Before the election in '96 the members of the club stood on the corner of 56th and Holdredge holding signs to show their support for Chuck Hagel.
The club also has been doing a lot of fundraising. The main reason for the fund raising is so they can buy a tree in the memory of Matt Wegelin.
Matt was a member of Teen-
age Republicans, and they , ~ · would like to buy a plaque along with the tree. They plan ., to plant it outside the science wing in spring.
Another main thing that the club has done, is organizing a political forum. They brought in some Nebraska republicans and democrats, and they talked about the different issues that are in America.
"It's a good place to learn about oriental heritage."

A. Join the Northeast Asian Student Club. It's as easy as that. In Asian Club the members meet once a month and learn numerous things about Asian culture Some of these things are music , foods and different customs They also watched vid-
eos about Asian singers and play Asian games. In Asian Club, they made cultural food for the Asian New Year, such as fried rice, and other Asian foods. The sponsors of the club are Susan Johnson and John Burke. They helped the students organize different activities for Teacher Appreciation Day.
" I like being in the club because I have a lot of friends in there and I get to learn more about our culture ," remarks Tuan Nguyen.
his year's African American Club decided that they were going to raise some money this year so they could go to Kansas City. The club had a bake sale and they were making plans to have a Talent Show.
This club not only meets on club days, but it meets every Wednesday after school. Many of the club members like to go to the club, because they can be with their friends while talking about some issues that are not normally talked about.
This club is not only for African Americans. Erwin Swiney said, "we try to encourage others to come, because it will help get rid of some stereotypes."

The 96-97 school year had a couple of activities that the Olas club has sponsored. They had a citywide conference, where many of the Hispanic clubs from the surrounding high schools met together. This conference helped the club out with some of its main goals: social interaction, leadership, and education about Latin cultures.
This year's Olas club has 48 members,
some coming from Brazil, Ecuador, El Salvador, Columbia, and Guatemala. Some of the meetings turn out to be bilingual.
This club has two sponsors, counse~ lor John Burke and Kathryn Oltiz, a student from UNL. The club has four officers: President Bogart Vargas, Vice President Mark Dyon , Secretary Gina Coja and Treasurer Wendy Borrora.
When asked about the club scheduling, Burke said, "It works out pretty well, because in the off weeks, the officers have time to plan."

Welcome Rockets has been a great success thanks to the help of John Burke and all the members. Welcome Rockets was designed to introduce high school students to a new school,and to let them get to know the school and people better This-year long club involves a lot of hard work and orginazation.
The activities involved with Welcome Rockets were giving tours to new students, helping them adjust to the new surroundings and familiariz-
ing them with all different areas of the school.
Welcome Rockets helps new students meet new people and helps them feel comfortable around the other students," senior Yasuko Tauko said.
The introductory activity is the Donut Dazzle. All the members met in the North Gym Concourse and were welcomed with donuts and juice. Tauko said, "The Donut Dazzle was a lot of fun."
It was a lot more work than we expected, but it was definitely worth it."

With the help from Complete Music and a group of junior girls, 1996-97 Candlelight turned out to be a huge success.
"We Can Last Forever" was the popular theme that brought a crowd of more then 400 sophomores, juniors and seniors to the Lincoln Train Station.
Travis Solano one of many seniors who attended the dance, said, "It was a night to remember."
Junior Nicole Bouwens, who helped with the planning, said, "It was a lot more work then we expected but it was definitely worth it."
Other juniors who helped were Jackie Oliver, Kristy Roesler, Linsey Venhaus, Sena Biggerstaff, Milika Rice, Michelle Peters, and Jalaina Handa.

Three in a row was a popular topic around spring because the boys basketball team won a record third straight state title . Also the girls basketball team showed up in the first round .of state. Football got it together to give people what they wanted with a state playoff appearance and all the other sports were flying high. Earning a place in history, they carry on the excellence in sportsmanship and athleticism.
Through their actions on and off the field and with their pride in Northeast sports, the Rocket spirit propelled them to the top. Within these pages there is a tradition tried and true and new legends who carried all Rocket sports over the top.

Nothing could describe the enthusiasm and determination of the Lincoln Northea st varsity football team more than the motto itself. They had great dedication and expected good things from the year. They underwent hard practices and improved greatly from la st year. The varsity team went 6-4 this season.
Despite winning six game s, the season was a fru strating one due to mis sed field goals and extra points. Northeast lo st three game s by one point.
In the first game again s t Southeast , Amon Helmstadter scored on a 74-yard run. Nebraska recruit and First Team Super Stater Erwin
Swiney scored twice after that on a 37-yard pa ss from Ryan Ma sek and then a 62-yard pas s from Masek.
Northea st won the city championship for the fir st time s ince 1983. However, the Rocket s had a di sappointing overtime loss in the first round of the state playoffs
One of the most memorable moments of the season was a 29-yard touchdown run by Nate Flegel. It started off as a usual play. Nate started rocking to the left and offensive lineman Jake Stutzman hit the ball carrier that caused the fumble to go right into Nate 's arm s.
" Nate ran with a bur st of speed that he didn ' t realize he had ," said Coach Mark King.
Another humorous moment wa s when Jake Stutzman blocked a field goal but wa s too busy celebrating to score.

Even though the Junior Varsity football team had a record of 2-5, it had great focus and gave it their all.
The s·eason started off great with a 408 victory against Fremont, but losses in five of the next six games followed. "One thing we needed to work on was communication. However, we had good team unity and worked hard to improve all year," Jason O'Connor said. "The funniest moment of the season was when we scrimmaged the reserve team and Jeremy Just tackled our own guy on a punt return."
According to O'Connor, "there were a few records set this year. Chris Summers set records for the most power push-ups and most fence running ."

The Reserve football team had a lot of talent, and despite the scores, the team played hard and played together. Unfortunately, the defense couldn't hold the opponents and the offense couldn't get past opponents' defenses.
The Re serves, despite posting an 0-7 record, didn't give up and never stopped giving an excellent effort.
"We tried to improve one game at a time and worked to build up our special teams," Da vid Kanne said "We enjoyed listening to Coach Schoening and Coach Cornwell 's pep talks and watching Mike Brown act crazy."

With a 9-6 record the Re serve team showed they can hang with the best of them. Beating poor serving and communication with the help of great team leaders, they won four straight games.
Not only did they become part of a winning team but they deemed themselves champions.
What's the funniest thing that happened this year?
"One of our players was chasing the ball on a sideout and when she bent over to pick it up she wiped out in front of the cheerleader squad," commented Tracy Lenhoff.

The Freshman volleyball team wa ~ a team of character. They put forth 2 strong effort and never gave up. Ever though the ending of the season show ~ 7-15 it doesn't reflect the actual score s The mental victories accomplishe c were 22-0, because they always helc their heads up high and kept thei 1 minds on what was important.

Varsity Tennis started out slow, but gradually got into the swing of things toward the end of the season.
The team ended the season with a record of 1-8, but finished strong at state. They placed 10th out of 25 teams. Ryan Flanders, Jeremy Raridon, Jamie Kramer, Brad Bowers, Luke Derowitsch, and Evan Kuchera all had a great state appearance this year.
This is the best showing at state from the Northeast tennis team since Coach Brien Connealy took over.
Sophomore Erik Hjermstad thinks that it will be hard losing three seniors, but he is looking for a higher place next year.
The team was led by sophomore Jamie Kramer. He is a second year starter as the No. I singles player and gave the squad needed experience at that spot.
Although the team did not win an inter-city dual , they did get 10th out of 18 teams in the Papillion Invitational.
"Despite the season, the team held together and had a lot of team spirit," Hjermstad said.

The J.V. tennis team had a winning season with a 5-4 record. They were a very young team and look to be 'stronger in the years to come Freshman Tom Voss said that the ir team motto was: "To play for the team and not for themselves " The J.V. team also had Thomas Schwarz , a foreign exchange student from Sw itzerland Some of the high lights of the season included w inning the Millard North Invitational and the fin ish ing 2nd in the city tournament.This was a goal that they set at the beginn ing of the yea r

Sophmore Todd Tomsett didn 't waste time thinking about the best part of the seaso n "The best part of the season was the banquet ," Tomsett said. The reserve tennis team had a lot of funny times such as when Tomsett went to smash a lob and whiffed and fell on the ground The team finished 3rd in the city tournament.

The boys gymnastics team had a disadvantage: Only one guy to do the job.
Jeff Siebe started out the season as the only male gymnast before he was joined by Brian Northup.
Siebe says one strength is that there is " only one guy" so the coach could focus more on him.
" There was only one guy so there wasn ' t enough to win any meets," said Siebe. "I had to stay positive and keep trying. "

Girls State Meet: Amy Kumpula finished 3rd on the uneven bars and 3rd on -the balance beam.
Note: Since Northeast did not field a full team , there were no scores available for the boys squad. Also, the Nebraska School Activities Association does not sanction boys gymnastics so an official state meet is not conducted.
The girls gymnastics team had to learn many vaules of competition and attitude. They used those vaules to earn 4th place at state.
"To have the right attitude you have to stay in shape ," said Amy Kumpula, senior gymnast.
They also learned to pull together when they needed it mo st, which gave them the confidence that they needed.
They have had some great memories." Lauren King was doing a forward on the balance beam , fell on the floor and skidded on her stomach ," said Kumpula.

Despite injuries and graduation losses, the young varsity boys cross country squad realized its goal of qualifying for the state meet in Kearney.
Not to be outdone, the girls team also ran in Kearney on a windy October afternoon.
The boys, led by a 22nd place finish by Ben Schluckebier, finished 8th. The girls counted on an 18th place finish by Molly Alberts to place 7th.

As in many athletics, there were many light-hearted moments. One of those for the girls team wa s when they started running after using the restroom Annie Luhring tripped over the curb at the gas station and a gentleman in a truck was staring and laughing hy sterically.

This year's varsity soft ball team may not have starte d off the greatest but it finished with a good season.
This season they had to make many changes , including having to adjust to a new coach (Kari Amen). Also new rules and expectations. " Different coaches have different expectations," said Amen.
" It was hard at first to get used to a new coach, but we learned to re spect her and try our hardest, " s aid Christina O ' Toole , a
senior player.
The team had to overcome many new challenges.
" We have some young players this season but we tried our hardest to work together as a team," said Brandy Allen , a senior player.
But besides the challenges they faced they had many great memories Beating Fremont was the greatest. Fremont is coached by Lisa Donahoe (ex-LNE head coach). Also , Kathy Weber broke two records this year: most RBI and most doubles.

The motto " Together We Achieve More" wa s one of tho se changes " We had to work on how to get along as a team off the field as well as on the field, " said freshman Amy Standley. The team learned that if you don't work together, you don ' t succeed.
But like all athlete s, they ha ve their conflicts and they have their good point s Thi s group could definitely hit the ball. They also knew how to play.
" We could hit the ball a lot, " said Standley.

Coach Rick Collura and the varsity boys basketball team had very big shoes to fill this season. The players and students were pushing for the first Class A 3-peat ever.
The season consisted of a lot of hard work and determination and we came out champions - again.
Mike Hahn was in the middle with strong support from Derek Engelbart, David Mercer and Tee Mason. Amon Helmstadter stepped up and showed his leadership skills this season. He did it all from scoring to rebounding. Hahn and Helmstadter were the
best 1-2, inside-outside combination in the state. Both players were selected to the Super State first team by the Lincoln Journal-Star. Hahn was picked for the Omaha World-Herald 's All Nebraska first team , while Helmstadter was second team.
"This season is one I'll never forget because we made history by doing something a Class A team has never done before," Engelbart said.
One of the team's goals at the beginning of the season was to play better each game. It was apparent when the gold medals were handed out that the Rockets did just that.

With a new head coach and new assistant coach, the jv team started with a new look. "We are beginning to play well from team leaders and good coaching," said Vernon Jiles.
"We are hoping to recover from our injuries to have a full roster with full support," says Shawn Scribner. Injuries and a poor attitude plagued the first part of the season which really hurts a team, but after working hard they were healthy and ready by midseason. "If we can stay healthy we can take city," commented Shawn Scribner.
The squad got past the fourth quarter slump that was very prevalent at the start and were on track and not looking back. "We are a team full of winners and we refuse to lose!" said Jiles.

The Rocket reserve boys basketball team had a very successful record and a defending city title which they took again this year. They finished the season 12-2 , playing hard and improving tremendously from last year.
They owe their improvement to the coaching of Pat Gatezmeyer and the humor of Asisstant Coach Jeff Dupont. ·
The squad played several close games, including two games that were decided in overtime. The Rockets won both of the extra period games

The Northeast freshman boys basketball team was not only motivated, they were fast. Their quickness was mostly due to hard practices and conditioning. They started out undefeated, 7-0, before they were handed their first loss by Lincoln East. This setback caused a string of 6 straight losses that put a slight damper on their season. Their final record was 7-6.

The varsity girls basketball team pulled off some of their goals and suffered some minor disappointments.
They had a winning streak at districts. A dissapointment was they weren't able to achieve a win in state. They lost in the first round to Millard South, defending state champions. Which was a close game because of overtime.
Their determination and drive was apparent in their attitudes in the games, and they needed each other ' s support throughout the season. "We were close and we knew what each other could do," said senior Nikki Ware.
Lindsay Ash said, "we knew that if we didn't win districts our season would be over; so we gave it our all."
Districts this year were very memorable for both Ware and Ash. They beat Omaha Westside and Fremont and earned their way to state.
The captains of the team were Jamie Volzke, Alicia Stuckenschmidt, And Lindsay Ash. They were voted in by the rest of the team.
Six of the 10 players were seniors and four of them have played together since jr. high, Volzke, Stuckenschmidt, Ash and Laura Evans. Ash said, "I have loved playing basketball with them and I am going to miss playing with them."

Coach Jeff Pierce has a lot to bE proud of. Despite some injuries anc little student support , the girls jv squac gave its all and giving their opponent ~ a run for their money.
"Coach Amy Jensen is a real insp i · ration and helps us out a lot," said Lis , Folsom.
With a lot of highs this season then were bound to be lows. "Sometime ~; our attitudes are not as positive as the ~· should or could be, but we are makin ~1 progress," said Folsom.
Teamwork was the main focus anc ! , improved as the season moved on ' said Michelle Peters. After getting th £i team together, the girls pulled off a t i game win streak. That propelled the n 1 safely into the L.P.S. Tournament. Wit h a loss in the first round to Lincoln Hig l 1 they came back to beat rival Lincoln Southeast in the second round for a 3rd place finish.

When asked what a goal was for the season the words "take city " came with no hesitation and that's just what the girls reserve team did. While hav ing a deep bench and a lot of diversity, the task was accomplished. There is no doubt these girls played aggressive and played to win.

The season of the freshman girls basketball team might have been a little tough but the girls pulled together at the end to take city Their record was 5-9.
"We all have good attitudes and respect each other for the most part. " stated Chanelle Coleman. " I enjoyed the competition and meeting new people ."
However, Lindsay Carlson had different views " I liked the games and being with friends ," she said Carlson and Coleman agreed that the goal for the season was to improve more as a team. Throughout the year they did just that. They defeated Southeast in the first round of the tournament and East in the championship round to become City Champions

The boys and girls swimming and diving teams had a good season, despite having young teams. This is Coach Jeff Soucie's second year and he has helped the swimming program by chalking up good season records.A new addition to the swimming staff is assistant coach Niki Anderson, a former East High swimmer.
The girls team sent six to state this year in hopes of proving that they are top contenders and not to be overlooked. State qualifiers were: Laura Sherbak, Laura Nevius, Amber Sherbak, Melissa Cummings, Rebekah Shepard, and Sarah
Obermeyer. The Rockets were led by captains Laura Sherbak and Rebekah Shepard.
The boys swimming team had an excellent year led by seniors Ben Schluckebier and Matt Dregalla. The highlights for the year were beating cross-town rival Lincoln High. The boys swimming team proved that even with a young team they can swim with the best. They placed 3rd out of six teams at the Heartland
The Rockets sent four swimmers and two divers to state. Swimmers Luc Lamarch, Ben Schluckebier, O.J. Hodges, and Shungu Mberengwa joined Mike Schluckebier and Jeff Delaney for a strong state performance.

The girls golf team showed improvement and qualified one golfer, Leisa Marquart, for the state meet.
Marquart carded a 213 at state, placed fifth at the Northeast Invitational with a 102 and shot 100s in the LPS Tournament and the District meet.
Jenny Foster provided another highlight when she shot a 97 at the LPS.
The Rockets defeated Lincoln High 225-251 in a dual meet and finished third out of eight teams at the Northeast Invite.

This year's vocal music department was very busy. The two main productions that they put on were the musical, "Pippin" and the "Rock Show." Charles Bowling and Dan Ruhnke were the teachers of five varsity groups and three other ·mixed chorus classes. The singing groups are elective classes so sometimes it is hard to get all your required classes in. Junior Chris Summers said, "I have to have a full day of classes because of my musical interest." Summers is in both Chambersingers and Concert Choir.
To be in a varsity music group students have to try out the year before. The • students have to sing in front of Bowling and Ruhnke. They are judged on t~e tone of the voice, the ability to sight read and breath quality. After the tryouts, the selected students start the class the next year.

"It's a bomb," describes Jake Stutzman about this year's Varsity Swing Choir. This year's choir includes 18 members; 9 seniors, and 9 juniors. The Varsity Swing Choir was very busy this year. Most students don't know what they actually have to do. Besides all the concerts at Northeast, they perform in many out of town concerts and competitions. This year they went to Peru State, Northwest Missouri State, and Greeley, Colorado. As always, they helped to put on the Rock Show in May.
This year the Varsity Swing Choir is also accompanied by Deah Harriet, and they have a bass player, Leia Grubb, and a drum player, Luke Oswald.

The '96-'97 Concert Choir included 54 students, ranging in grade from sophomores through seniors. This is the largest varsity singing group at Northeast. They sang all types of songs including classical, acapella, and gospel. Concert Choir has been able to perform at school and also took part in the All-City Concert Festival on February 18.
One of the main events Concert Choir focused on was its musical called "Pippin". It was a 17th century musical about a guy that becomes a man. Josh Turek, a three year member, was the main character this year.
Junior Chris Summers said, "I'm looking forward to the challenge ahead and putting together a musical."

A big part of Northeast's vocal music tradition is Meistersingers. The group sings acapella and dresses in Renaissance costumes. They have participated in many events such as Renaissance Festival in Kansas City which "was a lot fun," commented Serena Porter.
They also performed for a life insurance benefit at Pershing Auditorium. "That's always a big day for us," remarked Mandie Craigie.
The Meister Singers have sang at banks, restaurants, and Christmas parties. The group traveled to Columbws for an ensemble contest and also Lincoln High. They have a magical dinner in which they sing and perform skits for the audience. One of the favorites is the "Magical in May" performance at White Hall Mansion.
This has been a very busy and productive year
for the Meistersingers.

Every year the Chambersingers is made up of eight girls and eight guys. These 16 students are kept un-· der control by Charles Bowling. The Chambersingers performed many times this year at school concerts, at St. Francis Chapel, and at the Diversity Fair. Senior Josh Turek said, "It makes me feel good to see people smile, when we sing for them." The main performance was the annual "Rock Show."

What do you get when you mix sophomore, junior and senior girls with Mr. Ruhnke? The 96'97 Silohuettes. This varsity singing group is a women's group that sings a variety of different music. " I like working with a variety of people and a variety of music," sophomore Elinor Yost said.
This year's Silohuettes had a lot of concerts that they had to prepare for. Some of them include the fall, winter and spring concerts. They also went to Brentwood Estates around Christmas time. " It made me feel good to sing for the elders," sophomore Tammy Scholl said. The two main events probably would be the Soup Supper and Women's Invitational. Women's Invitational was a competition held at Wesleyan University.

Trumpets, flutes, drums, violins, basses, and cellos. Yes, believe it or not, all of these are included in the Northeast instrumental department.
This year's instrumental department was made up of 5 major ensembles, varying from pep band to orchestra. The different groups also play a variety of different songs.
Some of the performances that they were in, included playing at the Lied Center, marching during halftime at football games, and playing at the "Rock Show". The marching band got to travel to Grand Island for Harvest of Harmony, and to Houston for the Harvest Parade.
The instructors are Neal Schnoor, Janet Lafollette, and Margit Fischer. The instrumental department is very good at Northeast, even though it doesn't get much recognition, besides the Marching band. · "Band at Northeast has been a great help in preparing me for my future in music," senior Jeff Poindexter said.

One of our larger bands at Northeast is the Symphonic Band. Symphonic starts second quarter and is taught by Neil Schnoor. This year was his first year teaching this band class. Many of his students said he was a good teacher and really helped them improve throughout the year.
Symphonic includes mostly juniors and seniors who were previously members of Marching Band during first semester.
They played in four concerts this year. Two of them were at Northeast. One was the All-City which drew a great crowd.
Types of music they focus on is gospel and playing marches. A few students said it's very hard, especially trying out for chairs.
Kariss Stephens said, "Just Grin and Bear it."

The Northeast Concert Band this year consisted of mostly sophomores. While only having a few performances this year, the Concert Band had a successful year. One of their favorite concerts this year was the Christmas concert, which was also performed at Northeast.
They have also traveled a little this year to different concerts. Fundraising was needed in order to do this. "We sold big, red, smelly flowers," replied sophomore Jesse Adcox. In other words, they sold poinsettes.
Senior Matt Dregalla occasionally took a leadership role and made the trombone section stand up and play. Taylor Keefe said, "Even though we are only sophomores, we produce a really good sound."
In order to produce a good sound, you should probably play for many years, like most of these students already have.
110/Concert Band

The Northeast Wind Ensemble is a balanced ensemble , meaning they have the same number of flutes as they do trumpets and so on. This makes them have a more balanced sound. This balanced group of musicians performed at a fall concert at Northeast , a concert with the Northeast Orchestra, and All-City which was held at the Lied Center.
To be in Wind Ensemble, you have to be selected. The instructor is Margit Fischer. This group of 41 students was mostly made up of juniors and seniors.
Senior Meg Hildenbrandt said, "In Wind Ensemble you get the opportunity to play music that most high school bands don't have."

Orchestra at Northeast is a very diverse ensemble. The main instruments are, of course, the strings, but they also have basses, woodwinds and brass instruments. When they need another instrument, they get students that are in Wind Ensemble Orchestra went to only two main concerts besides those held at Northeast. They had All-City and the LPS Festival. Anyone who plays a string insrument, including violin, viola, cello and string bass in any grade can be in Orchestra. To play any other instrument you must be a member of Wind Ensemble.
Janet LaFollette is the lone instructor of this ensemble. "Janet and most of us really feel that we have really grown together as an orchestra this year ," senior Erica Rea said .

Out of 21 students playing in Jazz Band this year only four returned from last year. The four are: Jeff Poindexter, Bryan Selix, Travis Selzer, and Matt Dregalla. After interviewing Bryan Selix he said, ''we are performing really well and that's a credit to Mr.Schnoor for being a great teacher."
On February 7 they performed at a soup supper to raise money to go perform in Greely, Colorado. Jazz Band also played at the annual Rock Show in May, which had a successful turnout as usual.
The Jazz Band is made up of the trombone, saxophone, trumpet, piano, drums, and bass guitar. Jeff Poindexter, who plays the trumpet, said he really enjoys Jazz Band. It has helped him with his future. He plans to go to UNL and is going to play for the marching band.
"Jazz Band was awesome ... Oh, Trumpets Rule!,"said Poindexter.

The 96' 97 Marching Band had a very exciting year. The main focus of the year was on their trip to Houston. The Marching Band took eight buses to Houston to perform in the Thanksgiving Day Parade. They were an opening band. "One of the cool things about Houston was that they composed a song just for us to play," senior Jessica Fujan said. Also down in Houston, the band played at a tree lighting ceremony, and went to NASA Space Center.
The Northeast Marching Band has always been known as a great band, but this year they broke their seventeen year streak of recieving all superiors at their competitions. They did not recieve a superior at NSBA (Nebraska State Band Association.) Some of the other competitions included HaNest of Harmony and The Star City Parade.
The Marching Band instructors were Neal Schnoor, Margit Fischer and Janet LaFollette. These insructors like to start the band year a little bit earlier than the regular academic year. The students in band have to come three weeks earlier and start practicing. During football season, the band usually comes early mornings to practice marching for the games. Matt Dregalla and Erica Rea said "We could have been much better, but we needed to be more focused."

Books, tests, grades, clubs. What do all of these have in common? They all have to do with Northeast academics. This year the academics were very wide spread, ranging from yearbook to Student Council.
When students think about academics, most ·would say, "who wants to do any type of schoolwork outside the classroom?" But most of the academic classes are based on having fun and learning, and the clubs were usually laid back.
Academics at Northeast were a big part of some of this year's seniors' success. Students that have focused on getting good grades for all four years of high school say that the hard work paid off.
"When you send in those college applications, it helps when they see honor roll and National Honor Society on your transcripts," senior Ginger Venhaus said. "Even though it isn't fun, doing your homework is important." Venhaus will attend the University of Nebraska next fall.

A great way to get involved with your school and community is to join Student Council. This year , these students did a lot of exciting things to help

The 96-97 Student Council was headed up by President Ben Shelton and Vice President Jen Wolf. Jen and Ben have been in Student Council for all four years and really seem to enjoy it.
The 32 Student Council members also
decorating, and selling the tickets. The Rocket Wall of Fame in the Shoe Hallway is all ran by the S.C. All the money from the brick selling goes to the Make a Wish Foundation.
Another activity students got involved with was the blood drive in the fall and spring , an acitivity that is always well supported.
The students also went to Colorado this year and visited different schools to see how they are different.

actors in Walsh. The actors of the play practiced every day for about two months to prepared themselves for opening night. Practices started after school and lasted until about 6:30, depending on the length of an actor's part. The finished product results in Walsh.
Walsh is a play about a general who is trying to help the Indians get along with the Americans, and has a 1: storyline similar to Dances With Wolves.

This year's Rocket was a new experience for many of the staff. The Rocket was made up of a total of 34 members; 22 seniors, 9 juniors and 2 sophomores.
So, how hard is it to make a 244-page yearbook? Pretty hard.
"You have to take pictures, find good pictures, write copy, and write captions," senior Sports Editor Ryly Shuman said. For the most part, though, these duties are split up and assigned to certain staffs. Except for the sports staff, they have to do everything.
With all of the new members, the Rocket even had two new members as editors. "I didn't know anything about layouts or working on Aldus Pagemaker, but when you have a deadline you learn real quick," senior Copy Editor Brandy Allen said.
For the most part, this year 's staff was really dedicated. We missed a couple of deadlines, but after that the staff really buckled down and got down to business. Sometimes, it called for staff members to come in after school and on some non-school days. "When you miss a deadline, it puts the whole yearbook back, and it's very hard to get back on schedule," Shuman said.

A lot of people say that a sports event wouldn't be the same if it weren't for the fans and supporters. That's why cheerleaders, spirit squad, Star Strutters, and the mascot are important. They help the fans get involved and excited about the games and keep everyone's spirits up, even when their team is down.
"Cheerleadering is a lot of fun, but it's also a lot of hard work," says Reserve Cheerleader Jennifer Rodwell.
Another way that Northeast keeps up its spirits is having a Mascot, "Rocky," at the J.V. and Varsity games. The number one goal for "Rocky" is to get the crowd fired up. "It's really hot in there and I can't see very well, but it's fun to be the symbol of Northeast," comments Zeb Stepanek, one of six students who take turns behind the mask.
So, with the help of the cheerleaders, Spirit Squad, Star Strutters, fans and of course "Rocket Man," Northeast is able to keep the spirit alive.

Many people thought that this year's strutters would help cheer on the Huskers t h is year in the Sugar Bowl. Even without the Husker football team, the Star Strutters hed a great time in New Orleans. The dance that the Strutters performed in the halfti me of the game was very different than the dance style they are used to. " It was more of a jazz dance," said Jessica Mitchell The other highlights of this year would inclu r1e the Bethany Days Parade, Shrine Bowl, Booster Blastoff, and going to Houston w i "h the band. In Houston the Strutters stayed at the Hyatt Motel, and they performed a1a tree lighting ceremony. The Strutters had the annual Drill Team Show in Decemb f r. There were 13 different drill teams , the Star Studders and the Northeast Drum Li 1:e that participated.
This year's strutter squad has 15 seniors and 3 juniors, so there was a lot of ex p ~rience. The captains were Tiare Horswill and Jasmin Mateer. Holly Kroese sai d " Strutters is an experience that I will never forget."

The Northeast varsity cheerleading squad had a great year. The seven girls traveled to Okaboji, Iowa for four days in June. There they learned many different types of dances, cheers, and they even did pyramids. They won many awards, such as four superiors and one excellent. Senior captain, Emily Waller, commented, "The experiences at camp brought us all a lot closer."
They also had a junior clinic that taught 2nd-6th graders cheers, chants, and a dance.
They gave away awards to the little cheerleaders for most spirit, best performance, and good attendance. At the end of the clinic they performed for their parents and took a group photo.
The 1996-97 school year has been challenging and very busy. They danced during Booster Blast-Off, the Drill Team Show, and the half time show of the LNE vs. LE basketball game, which was a new experience for them. And of course, the cheerleaders kept up the spirit of the Rockets from the sidelines.

Ready? Hit it! The Junior Varsity Cheerleaders have led a busy and productive year. They started it of by going to camp Okaboji, Iowa. There they learned complicated cheers, dances, and jumps.

The JV squad has put in a lot of effort to keep the spirit and enthusiasm up at all of the J.V. events, since many of the them are often overlooked by Varsity sports. Nikki Johnson also stated, "I really enjoy being a cheerleader and cheering at all the games.

Ready? Okay! The Reserve Cheerleaders started off the season with a summer clinic at Creighton University. Thy learned new cheers, complicated dances, and they also woke up early to tone their bodies. They wor:i a first place trophy for the porn routine in which they performed against 20 squads.
Brittany Miller says she enjoyed football season the most because she got to cheer outside. "I get a little more hyper when I'm outside in the fresh air," remarks Jenny Rodwell.
They have participated in many events which included going to the
Orange Bowl, marching in the Star City and Bethany Days Parade, and also included a dance during the half-time show of a reserve basketball game.
The squad has had a lot of quality time together this year. They have had a couple of parties, including the Valentines party. "We've grown a lot closer since the beginning of the year," comments Rodwell.
Reserve member, Brittany Miller, comments, "Cheerleadingg this year was a definite learning experience and I enjoyed being a school respreserntative." •

Busy, busy, busy! That's what the Freshman Cheerleading Squad was during the 1996-97 school year. From cheering at games to performing in numerous parades, such as Star City Parade, Shrine Bowl and Bethany Parade. The Freshman Squad has made a big difference in this year's school spirit at Northeast. The squad also cheers on the freshman teams, which sometimes don't get as much attention. The squad also attended camp at Creighton At the camp, they
learned new cheers, dances and jumps. The squad said that the camp was fun and a new experience for many of them.
"The best part about being a cheerleader is meeting new people and hanging out with other members of the squad," says Tenae G raybosch and Kristi Rost.
Other duties of the cheerleaders are making signs for every game day, cheering at all freshman sporting events, and keeping up the spirits of the Northeast fans.
We've got Spirit, Yeah, Yeah!

The Spirit Squad has put a lot of time and dedication into showing their spirit and pride for Northeast sports. In doing so, they make signs for the players, decorate for dances, and cheer on many different sports.
The Spirit Squad has gotten to know each other very well this year because
of all the time they have spent together. For example, they went to Omaha with the cheerleaders to shop and hang out.
They also have parties and many other activities that bring them closer together. There are 23 members in Spirit Squad, and they meet once a month to discuss upcoming activities. The Spirit Squad takes "tests" on what they've done the past month and discuss things they need to accomplish.
"Being a member off Spirit Squad takes commitment, but it is also a lot of fun," says Captains Angela Goebal and Erica Lawrence.

The boys varsity basketball team once again managed to bring home the Class A state title trophy. Northeast won its third straight state championship with a 66-48 victory over Lincoln East. With the win, Northeast became the first Class A school ever to win three straight state titles and just the fourth team in any class to do it. With the help of Amon Helmstadter and Mike Hahn, Northeast managed to stay ahead of the game. The first day of the II I state tournaments brought Northeast up against Omaha North. Thanks to an early lead, which continued throughout the entire game, Northeast obtained a 66-60 win over Omaha North. Day 2 of the tournaments brought Northeast up against their city rival, Lincoln High, who the Rockets had lost to, 61-56 in the regular season. However, that didn't hold the Rockets back, who finished off the Links with a 84-62 win, and advanced to the state finals.

The class of 1997 will always be remembered for it's school spirit and friendships. This is the first senior class that will graduate after being here for four years. Julie Meyer said, "At times it seemed long but actually the years went by too fast." Although this year's class is ready to leave Northeast, it will be hard to say goodbye to all of the friends we have became so close with in the last four years. Ryan Worley said, "During the time I have been here, my friends and I have become much closer."
Most of the class of 1997 plans on going to college after graduation. Worley wants to go to college in Lincoln for a busir:,ess degree. Joe Fagler would like to go to college to play baseball. Other students are looking farther ahead in life. Meyer plans on getting married to a rich man and having five kids. This year's class has grown a lot in these four years. Fagler believes, "high school is the best years of your life, but I am ready to move on." Thanks to the class of '97 for all of the good times. We will miss you.

Senior Year. A special time in our life. We look back on all the memories that we've made. We have all shared good times and bad. Laughter and tears. Walking in the halls and stopping to chat with a friend or a teacher. Crowding in the gym for our favorite Rocket-Review. Standing in the bleachers chanting "Let's Go Rockets, " cheering on our team to a sweet victory.
No matter if we move away or stay close to home, we will never forget the memories we've made at Rocket High. The memories we made with our friends are the ones we will hold closest to our heart.
We cautiously walked in the front doors as the first freshmen, in the fall of 1993, wondering who are these strange faces staring back at us. Four years later, we are walking out the same doors saying good-bye and good luck to the same faces who are now our best friends.
Our day has finally come to put on the cap and gown and walk across the stage with our heads held high, saying good bye to the past and hello to the future. A future that we all hold in our hands.
As our eyes fill up with tears of sadness, and hopes of joy, we begin embarking on a new chapter of our life. No matter where life takes us, we will always be proud to say that we are ROCKETS! For we are the class who Created a New Legacy. We are the Class of 1997.

This year's junior class learned that it wouldn't be all fun and games being a junior. This is the first year when many students start the long journey to prepare for college.
"This year was my hardest so far," Shannon Nelson said.
Many students cram their schedules with required classes, so they will have the opportunity to relax as a senior. When asked if it was all worth it, Nelson answered, " Yes, because I will probably only have about four classes next y~ar."
For others this is when they realize there is only one year left and they need to get going. Juniors also have to worry about taking the ACT'S at the end of the school year and to start applying for scholarships.
Besides all the preparing, there are some good things about being a junior. Chris Summers said, "I liked my junior year, but I am ready to be a seni6r so I can have some of that senior power."

The sophomores this year gained a little bit of freedom. Such as the privilege to have the opportunity to drive without parents. Oh, the freedom.
Getting your license is the best part of being a sophomore. Even though sophomores are getting their licenses, they are still denied the privilege to go out to eat for another year. Michelle Hobbs said, " I think we should be able to go out if we can drive."
This year's sophomore class also became very involved in clu~s and sports. Hobbs played on the varsity softball team, Erik Burback played varsity football and J.V. basketball. Others became involved in other things, like Trey Murrell.
A Student Council member, Murrell is the voice you hear every day with the announcements. He's the one who says, "Good Morning Rockets."

New school, new friends, new rules, and new freedoms. All of these things were experienced by this year's new freshman class. Noa Craft said, "meeting new people was the best part about coming to Northeast." .
With the change of coming to a big high school from a small middle school, one might expect some of the freshmen to be a little scared. Not Missy Holton, though. She said, "knowing a lot of upperclassmen helped a lot."
Even though the freshman class does get a lot of privileges, they are limited in some areas. They are denied the right of open campus and early release. Freshmen are not allowed at Candlelight or prom. Without these privileges, they are allowed to become as involved as they can in other aspects of Northeast. They can try out for any level of sports and be in any club they want. Most freshmen took advantage of those rights, too.
With all these new privileges and changes, this year's freshman class adapted very well.

Looking back on the years of Northeast was a little hard, but Bob Els, Athlectic Director, former Northeast teacher and former Northeast student, helped out. Many people would be surprised how much Northeast and the faculty has changed over 30 years.
The building has changed in lots of ways. "When I was in high school, we had to play basketball on the auditorium stage," said Els.
The staff has changed a lot, too. Not only has it grown in number, but Els thinks that they have a lot more freedoms. When he started teaching there would have been no way that any of the teachers would have worn jeans.
If any of you know Pat Mckie, he wears jeans probably 75% of the time. McKie is in his second year of teaching at Northeast and was also a 1988 Northeast graduate. "The students today are more mature because they have more responsibility," Mckie said.
