Smoke and mirrors

The spectacular collapse of Carillion shows that the present capitalist system is still working very very well for those who own can control it.

Dear Ed

It is estimated that these fat cats have made around £300 million out of them demise of the company. How does it all work? It’s simple: the hedge fund borrows shares and then sells them. When the value of the shares fall, they then buy them back and they can then return the shares to whoever they have borrowed them making a huge profit.

Having watched in 2014 that Carillion was heading for trouble these parasites borrowed shares from the company when the value of shares was high and then bought them back when the value crashed.

Assumptions I read with disgust the letter from Mrs B Smith in Ist Feb issue. I am not fully conversant with the in’s and out’s of how the Parish Council operates so cannot dispute her comments about funding. What I am appalled about is her assumptions about the people of High Green. Even though the “council estates” are quite large, many of the houses are now privately owned and along with the houses built as private in the first place, now make up a large proportion of the houses in the area. I agree that a large number of High Green properties fall into band A council tax. That is not our fault as we have no control over the setting of these rates. That is the councils responsibility. Many properties in the area are in the higher bandings. There are many houses in High Green valued over £200,000. As with all areas, a percentage of the High Green population is out of “paid” work. There are the scoungers, as there are everywhere, which will include the area that Mrs Smith lives in, but there are also many people who do voluntary work within the community while trying to find suitable paid work. As someone who has been lucky to have been in full time employment since 16 years of age, and know many many people in the area who have done likewise, I resent the implications made in her letter. So Mrs Smith, I respect that you are entitled to your opinions, but please do not presume that you know everything about an area you do not live in. Also do not tar everyone in an area with the same brush.

I refer of course to a whole raft of hedge funds.

Fairtrade Fortnight The Fairtrade Group would like to draw readers’ attention to Fairtrade Fortnight which takes place from February 27th to March 12th. As Stocksbridge has the honour of being a Fairtrade Town we hope that local people will join us in celebrating this event. There will be free Fairtrade coffee, tea and biscuits upstairs in the Library on the morning of February 28th and prizes to be won in a raffle on March 4th at the Co-op. We also plan a competition for school pupils with lots of prizes. If any local group is arranging a Fairtrade event of their own we would be pleased to hear about it. Fairtrade is what it says it is – trade that is fair to both the producer and the consumer. That’s something we can all support. Contact Margaret on 2882393 or Joan on 2888399.

I use the above centre generally once a week on Saturdays. The purpose of the visit is to dump plastic that is forbidden from the domestic bins - I find this ridiculous any way. Apparently ‘plastic’ Therefore perhaps someone knowledgeable can is not ‘plastic’. Many people visit the centre for the shed some detailed light for the uninitiated please? same reason. The state of the site is disgusting. The bins are often full, plastic bags and paper / cardboard is strewn all over the place. Can the powers that be please do something about this?
