Horse Camp at Juddwood Farm

ane Bastable writes: “Our first ‘Horse Camp’ of the year at Juddwood Farm enjoyed mainly sunny weather. Eleven pepole ranging in ability and ambition came to stay for the second May Bank Holiday, a large contingent being from Chipstead Riding Club. All the horses were stabled on site, with the riders staying in their lorries or caravans. Each day everyone had an individual flatwork lesson with Wizz Clack, who as usual worked her socks off in the indoor school, while out in the grass ring Elizabeth Dunnings and Daniel Baddeley put the riders through their paces with some interesting show jumping exercises. The camp includes evening entertainment and on Saturday night we were lucky enough to have Karen Combe come along and share her experience of being a vet at the 2008 Olympics it was a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes. Sunday evening we were treated to a demonstration by a local stunt rider and producer of horses for film work. He shared some tricks of the trade and let all that were willing have a go! Monday was cross-country day with tuition from event rider, Laura Powell. I think everyone exceeded their own expectations and it was a pleasure to watch them achieve so much. A big thank you to all the instructors, to Karen, Lee and our photographers for helping to make it another fun filled weekend. The next horse camp at Juddwood is on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of September. Team Balanced does it again

n overcast and chilly bank holiday Monday at the Surrey County Show didn’t affect the morale in the Team Balanced Horse Feed Camp, as Charlotte Adams-Lane sealed the first qualification of the year to Horse of the Year Show in the Double Harness Scurry Driving. Charlotte and husband Ian, farmers of Byhurst Farm, Chessington in Surrey, had an extremely quick but unlucky first round of the day, narrowly knocking three cones to add twelve penalty seconds to what would have been the quickest time. When leaving the arena Charlotte asked how many cones she had down, and when told surprisingly replied, “Oh! That’s good!” Despite over an hour delay to the show programme the pair were still extremely focused when coming out for the second round of the day. “Come on ponies, let’s have some fun!” could be heard from Charlotte as they stormed around the ring to record the fastest time of the round

at just over 54 seconds, sealing their qualification to HOYS. The ‘Championship’ Class then commenced, with the top six from both classes combining to compete for overall glory of the day, and with qualification already sealed Charlotte and Ian seemed in a relaxed and buoyant mood. Second last to go, the pair, driving their 12.2hh ponies Rip & Tear, could be heard entering the arena with Charlotte encouraging “Come on, let’s see if we can do this!” They set off at a blistering place, kicking up so much sand from the arena that it was surprising that Ian, in the back of the carriage, was not wearing racing goggles. Coming into the slalom they narrowly knocked a cone, receiving four penalty seconds. Despite this they continued to drive on and recorded the fastest time of the day with 51 seconds. Chris Orchard then came in with her pair, Touch & Go, and narrowly claimed victory with a 53 second clear round,

dropping Charlotte and Ian into the Reserve Champion place. Congratulations must also go to Alison Milman who gained her HOYS qualification in the first round of the day in the 12hh and under class. Charlotte, whom splits her time between farming and Scurry Driving is available for any aspiring drivers who require tuition. Charlotte pictured with Rip & Tear
