skin Soothing Sun-Kissed Skin
Soothing Sun-Kissed Skin How to assess and treat skin with sun damage by Ariana Roseman Sun damage can occur at any time of the year, even in Winter, a fact that surprises most clients. Many people toss their sunscreen under the bathroom sink as soon as the temperature drops lower than 50 degrees. With Summer in full swing, you may be noticing more clients coming in with concerns of discoloration, dryness, freckles, uneven skin tone, or fine lines, which are all common signs of sun damage. Sun damage occurs when unprotected, prolonged exposure to UVA and UVB rays rapidly harm skin cells in the epidermal layer. This radiation can permeate down through the other layers of the skin. Inflammation can occur, which is what we know as sunburn. For most, a

sunburn will gradually fade into an appealing tan. The darkening of the skin tone is the body's way of protecting itself from future damage. There are plenty of ways to help clients with sun damage, and introducing soothing facials to your service menu may be just what your business needs this Summer.
ASSESS THE SEVERITY Before choosing a suitable facial for your client, it’s important to identify if your client has a sunburn. Sunburns can be treated in the spa, but they need to be handled delicately. These burns can be painful, so avoid using any physical exfoliation, acids, heat, or hair removal techniques on clients with inflamed skin. Use caution if there is noticeable peeling or flaking. Your client may need to let their skin rest before receiving a professional service. Hyperpigmentation is the darkening of parts of the skin in relation to the skin around it. This is a common sign of sun damage, but it should not be confused with melasma. Melasma is a more intense form of hyperpigmentation, often symmetrical on both sides of the face, and very stubborn to reduce. Sun exposure can trigger melasma, but hormone fluctuations, pregnancy, some medications, or illnesses are usually the underlying culprits. Although it can present similarly to hyperpigmentation, melasma needs to be treated by a dermatologist. If there is any blistering or your client complains of nausea, headache, dizziness, or the skin appears swollen and puffy, they may have a case of sun poisoning. This is another more severe presentation of sun damage that is better left to the proper medical professionals.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT EXFOLIANTS Not all chemical exfoliants are created equal. There are a few that have been studied to perform very well on sundamaged skin. Many of the alpha-hy-
droxy acids (AHAs) have shown fantastic potential for reducing the appearance of hyperpigmentation. Glycolic acid, for example, has been shown to increase the water-holding capacity of the epidermis. Over time, this chemical exfoliant will fade discoloration without drying the skin allowing it to remain supple. Glycolic acid is a popular AHA for fine lines, as it promotes the production of collagen and elastin, therefore producing an improvement in epidermal thickness. Lactic acid is another AHA that functions similarly to glycolic acid. This chemical exfoliant is noted as being gentler on the skin, making it ideal for treating sun damage. It slowly loosens the bonds between dead skin cells, allowing for the brighter skin underneath to come to the surface. As a result of this turnover, the skin will thicken, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Research suggests that lactic acid has an anti-inflammatory effect, making it beneficial for soothing photo-sensitized skin.
BOOST BALANCE Hydration plays an important role in balancing the skin’s barrier. Sun-damaged skin is more sensitive to harsh ingredients and treatments. Look for products containing ultra-hydrators such as ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or squalane. Restoring moisture with the aid of humectants, emollients, or occlusives can prepare the skin for the exfoliating treatments designed to fade your client’s hyperpigmentation and fine lines. Aloe vera is the most recognized treatment for sun damage, making it an excellent addition to a soothing facial. Aloe reduces inflammation and by doing so, jumpstarts the healing process. This natural antioxidant calms the skin while increasing hydration. A chilled aloe vera mask would make an amazing addition to any facial. Sea buckthorn oil is another fantastic ingredient to incorporate into a facial
designed to soothe sun-damaged skin. It’s naturally rich in antioxidants, and its high content of vitamin C works wonders for irritation and discoloration. Sea buckthorn oil has been shown to increase circulation and induce cell regeneration; two things crucial for sun damage repair. This will pair excellently as a moisturizing agent in a facial largely because of its calming and rejuvenating capabilities.
PLAY SMART While our job is to refine and perfect the skin, there is no harm in keeping an eye out for danger. During the skin analysis process, if something appears to be out of the ordinary don’t be afraid to encourage your client to seek advice from a dermatologist. The ability to catch irregularities in the common mole or freckle may be a lifesaving referral. It’s increasingly important to educate clients on the importance of sun safety, as only 11 percent of adults wear sunscreen daily. Everyone needs to be using sunscreen daily. It’s much easier to prevent sun damage than to treat it. A broad-spectrum SPF should be recommended to all clients, regardless of gender, age, or ethnic background. In addition, UV-protective clothing like hats, gloves, sunglasses, and even shirts and pants, can keep the skin safe from damaging sun rays. Plus, they make a fantastic addition to any spa boutique!

skin Sunscreen Matchup
Sunscreen Matchup The best sunscreens for your clients’ skin type by Ariana Roseman In recent years, the sunscreen market has exploded. Almost every brand has released its own formulation, touting to double as a foundation, primer, or miracle. Many of these formulations are marketing tactics, and as professionals, it’s easy to see through some of the crazier claims. Your clients, however, may fall into the “convenience” trap. If something is easy and claims to do multiple things, it must be worth the hefty price tag, right? In reality, sunscreen doesn’t need to have a million purposes. Only one: protect the skin from UVA and UVB rays. Sunscreen formulations are typically made up of similar inactive ingredients, usually meant to keep them stable and functioning properly. The active ingredients can determine if they will be better for dry skin, oily skin, sensitive skin, etc. Learning which type of sunscreen benefits which skin type will help your client choose the best one for their unique needs. 12

skin Sunscreen Matchup
OILY SKIN Those with oily skin often shy away from sunscreen because they are used to the thick, heavy formulas their parents used on them as kids. Those types of formulations can be easily sweated off, especially on a person with higher oil levels to begin with. The skincare industry has come a long way with sunscreen, now offering formulations specifically catering to oily skin that last through excessive sweat or exercise. Chemical sunscreens can contain the active ingredients of oxybenzone, octisalate, octinoxate, avobenzone, octocrylene, or homosalate. Chemical SPFs work by absorbing UV radiation before converting them to heat and releasing them from the body. This form of sunscreen works especially well for oily skin because they typically have a thinner consistency than its physical counterparts. They absorb quickly, leaving behind little to no trace, and can even reduce shininess in the skin. Chemical SPFs are praised for eliminating the ‘white cast’ many sunscreens leave behind. Especially for darker skin tones, the ghostly finish some sunscreens leave may push people to skip it altogether. Chemical sunscreens are often clear or milky in color and once absorbed leave no discoloration on the skin tone.
DRY SKIN Sunscreen can be a maze of options for someone with dry skin. They need something that won’t amplify dry patches, or worse, make the skin even dryer. A common complaint is that sunscreen clings to flaky skin or settles on the top of the skin, settling into fine lines and texture. Dry skin needs an SPF that will hydrate the skin during wear. Physical sunscreens, sometimes referred to as mineral sunscreens, contain the active ingredients of zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or a blend of both. Mineral SPFs work by blocking the sun’s harmful rays and reflecting them out. Unlike chemical sunscreen, mineral sunscreen acts as a shield from rays
instead of absorbing and converting them. This is where the word ‘sunblock’ comes from. While usually thicker in consistency than chemical sunscreens, mineral SPFs have come a long way and are no longer the opaque white pastes reminiscent of paint. Newer formulations absorb effortlessly, leaving the skin moisturized and protected. Mineral SPFs are naturally soothing, thanks to the high zinc percentage, ensuring no further irritation or dryness will follow.
COMBINATION SKIN/ NORMAL SKIN For combination skin, choosing sunscreen can feel daunting when trying to appease dry cheeks and an oily t-zone. Luckily, there is a readily available solution. A hybrid sunscreen incorporates ingredients from both chemical and physical sunscreens. While it’s not typically recommended to mix two separate formulas, a hybrid sunscreen is stabilized and curated for use. Those with normal skin can take their pick of the sunscreen types, as most will mesh nicely with their skin’s biome. Normal skin types may choose to seek SPFs with brightening or refining properties. It’s important to remem-
ber the best sunscreen is the one that your client will enjoy wearing.
SENSITIVE SKIN/ ACNE-PRONE Acne-prone or sensitive skin types may have had bad experiences with sunscreens because they caused redness, breakouts, stinging, or irritation. Chemical sunscreen can exacerbate alreadysensitized skin. Physical sunscreens are the ideal option for those dealing with acne or sensitivity. Zinc is a natural anti-inflammatory ingredient that has been shown to help soothe inflamed acne lesions and reduce redness.

On the sleepy, serene Delray Beach coast sits The Seagate Hotel & Spa, an ideal setting to relax and recharge. Since opening in 2009, The Seagate has built a solid reputation in South Florida as a top destination spa, with attention paid to even the smallest luxurious detail. With 8,000 square feet featuring six private treatment rooms, a Vichy shower, manicure and pedicure suite, and an exclusive spa suite where guests can indulge in their very own retreat for two, it is no wonder The Seagate attracts both locals from nearby and travelers from afar. The spa menu includes highly specialized facials, body treatments, and massages, as well as waxing and nail services. Spa guests can enjoy all-day access to the hotel pool, whirlpool, pool bar, fitness center, tranquility room, and eucalyptus steam room. Spa Manager Paige Kelly details how she keeps The Seagate, a Conde Nast Top 75 U.S. Hotel Spas honoree, exceeding guests’ expectations while creating unforgettable experiences. Her top tip? “Always be present and do something extra!”
SPA OF THE MONTH
SIGNATURE TREATMENT Cares melt away during The Seagate’s 120-minute signature treatment, the Restorative Ritual, a deluxe body treatment meant to soothe life's stresses. The ritual is performed in the exclusive Vichy shower room, an invigorating water treatment that uses shower heads designed to promote circulation and soothe sore muscles. “The treatment begins with body brushing to eliminate toxins and a spearmint body polish to gently exfoliate, leaving the skin smooth and silky,” explains Kelly. “An indulgent massage follows, using a combination
of specialty essential oils and hot stones to relax tired, aching muscles. A therapeutic scalp massage using pink hair and scalp mud finishes the experience.”
MARKETING “Our team uses a combination of marketing efforts, which are spread across digital campaigns and media outlets. The current primary and biggest following is our local community,” notes Kelly. “We have built a network of local partnerships and connections and always make sure to engage with our local business administrations, merchants, and chambers.” The Seagate’s clientele is a healthy mixture of private members, hotel guests, and locals. They are kept engaged through exclusive events and highlights in the monthly Seagate Newsletter.
TRAINING “Training new spa staff members is an exciting hands-on process with our team,” says Kelly. Each spa staff member experiences an extensive two-week training process which includes orientation, signature treatment protocols, and an online module. Retail brand representatives typically meet and greet new spa team members and provide a range of product gifts, training manuals, and hands-on training to ensure each technique is executed to their brand standards. “Annual performance reviews are a key tool to bring out the best in our spa team. We also welcome guest feedback and use it as guidance and encouragement to achieve our goals of becoming one of the top spa industry leaders,” explains Kelly. “Additionally, our staff is our family and should be celebrated. Each spa employee receives a complimentary birthday spa treatment of their choice.”

er service, helping you provide quick responses and convenient options for booking. It's not all about satisfying customers, but also about keeping you organized, which spa management software can do. It keeps things tidy and ensures everything is taken care of from start to finish, without you having to lift a finger.
How to Select a Perfect Spa Management Software There are a lot of options out there for spa management software. However, to get the most bang for your buck, it's best to consider what works best for you, your spa, and your goals. When choosing your spa management software, consider the following.
1. Consider Your Goals Think back to when you first started up your salon. What were the key things driving you? Did they change? They likely have, especially since you’ve gotten a feel for what running a salon is all about. When selecting spa management software, think about your goals and how you hope automated tools will help get you there.
2. Keep Budget in Mind While some tools are free, others come with paid features you won't want to miss out on. Before diving into your options, take a good look at how much you have to spend.
3. Ensure Customer Care is There There is nothing worse than having an issue you can't solve. As a business owner, you need to have quick solutions to give your staff and customers the best experience. Check out customer care for each potential choice, checking for hours of operation and ways to get ahold of someone (preferably live).

ware that’s easy to use. Think not only of yourself, but also of your customers and your staff, making sure everyone can use the software easily.
5. Consider Security Spa owners might not consider their business a risk until it's too late. Any system that handles personal information will have to be secure. Check spa management software for things like automated alerts and continuous monitoring, and be sure software is Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) enabled.
6. Is There a Free Trial? We live in a world where you can try before you buy, so why not take advantage? Many services will offer a free trial to test it out and get a feel for all the features. Check the flow of things, the user-friendliness, and your overall experience before committing to using it for your spa.
Key Features You Need for Your Spa Business When signing up for spa management software, you may notice that each company will provide a list of features. Some will add to the overall cost, while others come bundled in. Before choosing, read the fine print. Here are the features to keep an eye out for: • Online appointment scheduling • Appointment reminders • Automated SMS marketing (including coupons!) • Feedback management • Accounting • Lots of integrations (Outlook, Google Calendar, etc.) Technology is there to make our lives easier, and spa management software is no exception. Find a system that suits your needs and provides you, your staff, and your customers with a seamless experience every time.

Adriana Torres and Patricia Chiong Beauty Lab + Market Where is Beauty Lab + Market Located? Beauty Lab + Market is located in the Falls neighborhood in suburban Miami, Florida.
Can you give a little information about your background as a brow artist?
Adriana: I have more than eight years of experience as a Licensed Esthetician and Cosmetic Tattoo Artist. My rare ability to see imperfections in symmetry is why clients trust and believe in my work. I am also an educator and mentor to aspiring students in the permanent makeup industry. I stay up-to-date with all the latest brow trends, am continuously learning new techniques, and make sure to listen to my clients and understand what they want.

Patricia: I am a licensed esthetician and cosmetic tattoo artist. My hidden talent is the ability to understand what women want and the artistic talent to make their vision a reality.
What inspired you to become an artist? Did you first start as an esthetician?
Adriana: My mother had her eyebrows microbladed. The service was not cheap. The results were not good. Her brows were uneven, and the strokes were too deep. I first noticed how dark they appeared. My mom explained the color subsides 40-60 percent (in time, it did). My second concern was the shape. Her brows were asymmetrical (her natural brows were not), but I quickly envisioned what needed to be done to make them symmetrical. Microblading is not a “one and done” type of service, it requires at least two visits. At her touch up appointment, I pointed out the areas that needed attention. The artist took my constructive criticism with grace and was open to recommendations. At the end of the service, she said “You have an eye for this, if you get yourself certified, I will hire you.” So, I did just that. I took the course, obtained my tattoo license, and came back to work parttime for her. I was a full-time high school teacher working multiple jobs to make ends meet, and this was my break! Tattooing is an art. It’s about enhancing natural beauty, symmetry and design, and most of all, it's about technique! Mastering the technique takes practice. It wasn't until after I started working on clients that I felt the need to become an esthetician. Understanding skin types, how skin functions, skin characteristics, the aging process, and skin undertones is fundamental to achieving clients’ desired results. Did I need to become an esthetician to work as a cosmetic tattoo artist? No. But do I believe every tattoo artist should have an in-depth understanding of skin types? Absolutely!
Patricia: When COVID stopped the world in 2020, I was forced to make a career change - a blessing in disguise. I had always been passionate about fashion and skincare, but my life path steered me away from her passions. Thanks to the pandemic, I had to regroup and restart. Through experience and ambition I set my heart and sights on a new reality and co-founded Beauty Lab + Market with my lifelong friend and collegiate soccer teammate. I knew together we had the talent , drive, and love of giving women the self-confidence they deserve by helping them create the reality of how they see themselves.
What brow philosophy do you stand by? Not everyone is born with perfect brows. But that doesn't mean your brows can't be perfect! You just have to find the right brow treatment for you.
What is your favorite brow treatment? There are so many brow treatments to choose from: henna brows, brow tinting, brow waxing, brow tweezing, brow lamination, ombre powdered brows, gradient brows, microblading, and pixelated brows, just to name a few. It’s difficult to decide which service is best; every client's needs are different. If a client is looking for a quick fix that looks great, saves them time getting ready in the morning, and always has their brows looking their best, our hands-down favorite brow treatment is a variation of the ombre powdered brows. Ombre brows are versatile and can be customized to meet every client's needs. It works well on all skin types, is customizable, and can be made bold or light, thick or thin, arched or curvy. The options are limitless.
What brands do you use and why?
brows and lashes. For cosmetic brow tattoos, Perma Blend Pigments. The color fades away (like invisible ink) without turning colors like red, blue, or purple. The pigments are veganfriendly and can be mixed to create a custom color. For brow shaping with wax, Beauty Image Azule is great for sensitive skin. For brow henna, we use Mina or Ellebanna, and For brow tinting, Refectocil or Bio.
What is your secret to beautiful and full brows? The secret to beautiful brows is to give your clients what they need and want.
What are your favorite tools to use in the treatment room and why? For ombre brows, the Beauty Vibe Wireless machine. Its best feature is that it is wireless. It is very user-friendly, with three different speeds, allowing for better control of pixelated results. It also has freedom for plenty of needle adjustments. The BrowMart microblading pen is a disposable tool for drawing eyebrows using the microblading technique. It contains a U-Blade made of 304 stainless steel (18 pins, 0.18 needle size).
What is your favorite part about working at Beauty Lab + Market? It’s all about the vibe. Our clean, airy space caters to all your senses - the perfect combination of luxury meets boho. The scent is like you’ve entered the lobby of a luxury hotel. The staff all get along and are there to help each other out; their camaraderie is uncanny. LASER FOCUSED Laser tag, laser beams, laser light shows – as kids, lasers were a lot of fun, but as adults, they can be incredibly useful! Cosmetic laser treatments can address a variety of mens' skin concerns, including tone and texture, skin tightening, tattoo removal, unwanted hair, and many more. The industry is seeing an increase in men scheduling laser treatments, and it’s no surprise why. These methods are minimally invasive, require little recovery time, and can be completed very quickly – many procedures take less than 10 minutes. You can even combine certain types of lasers to maximize results. Taking into account the differences between men’s and womens' skin and hair, you’ll want to ensure you have the right tools and are educated on the different settings. Here are the most requested lasers and what they correct: Laser Skin Resurfacing improves skin texture from causes like acne scarring, sun damage, and age spots. By combining different wavelengths to smooth the skin, jumpstart collagen production, and plump wrinkled areas, this method brings optimal results. Laser Hair Removal is a more permanent alternative to waxing and is generally requested for the chest and back. The process requires different settings based on skin tone, hair type, and even hair color, so it is important for practitioners to be wellversed in these parameters. Multiple treatments are usually needed for final results. Laser Therapy corrects facial redness from rosacea, spider veins, or broken blood vessels. This highly effective procedure only takes five to 10 minutes, and three to five treatments are typically needed for best results. These treatments are a great option to consider if attracting men to your business is a priority. Just add lasers to your services menu and “beam up” your new clients!

Lash & Brow Guide
FIRST THINGS FIRST – GET CERTIFIED Being certified not only makes you more official, but means you could possibly accredit others when they become certified. There are tons of certifications out there, so start by looking up some requirements in your state. Go back to your lash tech cert and inquire about whether they have a certification course for educators, or if there is one they recommend.
EXPAND YOUR HORIZONS As an educator, you should always be anxious to learn. There are so many talented lash artists with different techniques, who you can gain inspiration from. Invest time in branching out and learn as much as you can about: • products • techniques • teaching • marketing and advertising
will come in handy for printing business cards and brochures, two things that can improve your image and attract business.
MARKETING GETTING ASPIRING LASH ARTISTS TO COME TO YOU With a service that's in high demand (like lashes!), the market is full of aspiring artists. Though they’re out there, the question is, how can you get them to come to you? If you’re new to the game, there are two things you should focus on more than anything: materials and marketing.
MATERIALS Teaching requires a plan and materials. Students want a course that will prepare them for their first client, looking for certified trainers with a track record of successful students. Don't panic if you're not there yet; everyone has to start somewhere! Start off with the basics and invest in quality materials over quantity. Pro Tip: Collaborate with a designer to create a unique brand. A solid brand

In the days of social media, marketing yourself is actually pretty easy. If you have a following from your lash business as an artist, use that to your advantage. Create eye-catching posts that get likes and shares, and try running a promotion for your first group of lash enthusiasts to get your foot in the door. Pro Tip: Never underestimate the power of old-school marketing. Get out there and make connections, plan events with local beauty entrepreneurs, and bring business cards wherever you go.
GIVE THEM A PREVIEW When creating your online content, add a few videos to drive traffic your way. Creativity will put you on the map and showcase your skills and shareable knowledge. Try to post regularly and think outside the box when creating content to help you stand out.
GET ORGANIZED Training a class of new lash artists can be challenging, especially when you're not organized. Work on your setup and keep your space and your schedule organized. This is where planning out your course comes in, checking that all the materials are handy that your students will need to be successful.
BE POSITIVE Getting things up and running can seem like a challenge, and it may take what seems like forever until your first class. Instead of getting down, stay positive and use the time to perfect your skills. Once you start training, reflect on your actions, and find ways to improve and tweak your methods. No one is perfect – so don’t be afraid to mess up and learn from it! If you've rocked it as a lash artist, you'll be fantastic as a lash educator. To score extra practice before you start training others, offer to mentor rookie lash artists to get a feel for what teaching will be like. It will make you more confident and help you through your journey of planning a course for those aspiring to become lash artists.

Now you can give your client the brows she’s always wanted with Brow Mapping. What is Brow Mapping, you ask? Lash & Brow Guide
As a Licensed Permanent Makeup Artist and Microblading Instructor, making sure that my students understand the art of Brow Mapping is pivotal. Mastering Brow Mapping was one of the key turning points for me to become a top requested artist for my clients. Brow Mapping is pivotal in your career to brow perfection. Permanent makeup created the need for accuracy in microblading and powder brows. It is very common to hear brow artists in the industry say “Brows are sisters not twins.” We all have that one brow that acts more like a distant cousin than sister. Brow Mapping has now given artists the techniques and skills to create symmetrical brows. Although an advanced technique typically used for microblading can still be utilized to perfect any brow service, Brow Lamination, Tinting, Waxing, and even threading can benefit from the precision and accuracy brow mapping can provide. There are several techniques and tools commonly used for Brow Mapping. I recommend using the string technique with regular thread. This advanced mapping technique allows for you to create symmetry using geometry. It will include parallel lanes and intersecting lines. Using a ruler and a caliper also helps to ensure the brows are the same size and distance from each other. The art of brow mapping begins with identifying anatomical landmarks on the client’s face. This has been referred to as the Golden Ratio or the rule of thumb when it comes to brow measurements. God knew exactly what he was doing when he created faces, allowing artists to easily locate where to start and end the brow. There are four places that allow brows to be created. Finding the center of the face is the most important. If the center line is off, then it will make it more difficult to locate where the front of the brow should start creating either far set or 44
July2022
LNEonline.com
close-set eye appearance. Locating the center of the face can be easily done by looking at the clients’ chin and following the center up through the cupid's bow of the lip and then the front of the forehead. Using those landmarks will help guide you to finding an accurate center even if people have larger or smaller facial features. Finding the fronts of the brow will help to make sure the brows are the same difference from the center of the face. The fronts usually correspond to the outer tear duct area of the eyes. Often due to over plucking or thinning hair due to aging, the front of the brows can appear sparse. This can make it difficult for the client and artist to know where the brow hairs should begin. However, knowing how to find where the front brow should start will allow you to create more fullness and natural looking brows. Arch placement is very important to accurately identify. If the brow arch is placed in the wrong area, it can give the appearance of short brows. Many clients want a higher arch so it is important during mapping that you are using the correct technique to keep the arches at the same height on both brows.
Tail placement will help to give the final finish of a brow. If the tail of the brow is lower than the front of the brow, it can give the appearance of a confused looking facial expression. If the front of the brow is lower than the tail, it will create the look of angry facial expression. We want our clients to appear natural in all facial expressions. Once the artist has found the places to start the rest will fall in place. Using measuring tools and a china wax marker, or brow pencil, an artist can begin to draw the design of the brows. Brow Mapping can seem challenging, but it does get better with time and practice. Allow yourself to take the plunge and become a brow mapping master!
Amy Ledgister began 3D Lash & Brow Salon and Academy in September of 2018.Since opening the Cosmetology school and Permanent Makeup Training center 3D Lash and Brow has become the #1 Beauty School in Dallas, Texas with a 100% State Board Passing rate. organic & wellness Collagen-Boosting Foods
THE COLLAGEN HYPE So, what's the big deal about collagen, anyway? First of all, collagen is found naturally in our bodies, working to give skin structure and suppleness. The more birthdays that pass, the less collagen we produce, causing the skin to sag or wrinkle. Adding collagen-rich foods to your diet promotes collagen production, which is clinically proven to improve skin's appearance and firmness. It also comes with some added benefits for joints and tendons, which tend to stiffen as we age.
10 COLLAGEN-RICH FOODS TO START EATING NOW If you're ready to hop on the bandwagon and see what a boost in collagen can do for you, add these 10 foods to your diet and watch the magic happen. 1. Beef Bone Broth You can get the biggest boost of collagen in your diet by sipping on beef bone broth. Beef bones are rich in Type I collagen, which works wonders for skin, hair, and nails. An additional perk of beef bone broth is that it’s packed with minerals, including magnesium, phosphorous, and calcium. 2. Chicken Chicken has a lot of connective tissue, which is a good source of collagen. One study showed that women who regularly ingested a supplement of chicken cartilage saw improved skin elasticity and fewer fine lines and wrinkles. Chicken has also proven effective at treating arthritis, working to keep joints lubricated. 3. Sardines Sardines are little salty fish that you can eat whole. That includes their scales and bones, both of which have a high dose of collagen. Not only are they tasty and fresh, they're also more easily absorbed than other protein sources, and provide omega-3s. Sardines are a win-win, so make sure to add a few to your diet. 54

4. Egg Whites Egg whites don't contain collagen directly. However, proline is an essential amino acid that promotes collagen production. Add egg whites to your diet when increasing your collagen intake to multiply your benefits. 5. Berries Vitamin C plays a role in collagen production. However, it's not something your body produces naturally, requiring supplementation. Luckily, tasty foods like berries are packed with Vitamin C, even more so than the most wellknown Vitamin C-rich fruit, the orange. Strawberries have the most collagen, followed by raspberries and blackberries. 6. Broccoli All those years of fighting your mother at the dinner table would have done you well if you had just eaten your broccoli. Like berries, broccoli has a ton of Vitamin C. Just one cup has enough for a full day's recommended dose. 7. Citrus Fruits Last but not least with Vitamin C, comes citrus fruits. They help your body produce more collagen and boost your immune system, keeping you feeling and looking healthy and vibrant.
8. Aloe Vera Aloe is another superfood on the radar, getting a reputation for its skin-quenching properties. Aloe as a whole packs several anti-aging benefits, but it's the meaty part inside that helps with collagen synthesis. Chop it up and add it to a salad, or blend it up into a tasty drink packed with lemons, oranges, and kale. 9. Garlic Garlic has several health benefits but, when it comes to collagen, it's a key component for breakdown. Adding more garlic to your diet will help your body utilize more collagen, allowing you to reap the benefits faster. 10. Leafy Greens Some studies suggest that chlorophyll is a precursor to collagen. Though it's not proven, those who indulge in dark, leafy greens like spinach, kale, and Swiss chard get a high dose of antioxidants. Although collagen is naturally made by the body, over time it starts to disappear. Adding these ten foods will help you keep collagen and boost its production. It's not just about looking good, but feeling good, and adding more foods that fight aging, tackle joint pain, and promote stronger, healthier muscles into your diet.

Brazilian Waxing Summer’s most successful service by Melissa Black
Have you been thinking about adding Brazilian Waxing to your service menu? If the answer is yes, you are in good company. Numbers from the Global Hair Removal Wax Industry Market are projected to reach 16.9 billion by the year 2027. As of 2020, it reached a record high of 2.6 billion dollars for the industry. This is optimistic news since we are all still emerging from a pandemic that had us wondering what the future has in store for professional estheticians. Given that hot girl Summer is already in full swing with plenty of opportunities to grab your part of the market share with Brazilian Waxing clients, let's talk about the elements you need to have in place for a successful hair removal business.

IN DEPTH TRAINING For Brazilian Waxing to be performed properly, safely, and consistently, every esthetician should have specialized Brazilian Waxing education. Hands on, in person, training is the most desirable to have. If you have basic knowledge of waxing, online training can be a useful tool to get started. Many manufacturers offer this along with opening orders of their products.
EQUIPMENT One of the advantages of this service is that the equipment is minimal. You need a sturdy waxing table, durable wax and or sugar warmers that can accommodate hard or soft wax, good lighting, a towel warmer (for sugaring), a sturdy cart or station, and your consumable supplies.
PRODUCT SELECTION Here you have three baseline options: soft wax, hard wax, sugar paste, or a combination of two or more of these. It is advisable to have working knowledge of all of these products. Soft wax is still the number one used waxing product and is typically made from glyceryl rosinate or pine resin and liquid paraffin. Soft wax has the shortest learning curve
as it is easy to spread and used in conjunction with soft muslin or pellon strips. Soft wax is applied in the direction of the hair growth and removed against. Hard wax is rapidly closing the gap and is most often made from polymers and film wax. This type of wax tends to shrink wrap the hair and is less likely to adhere to live skin cells. Hard wax does not require strips and is able to be administered with a lower working temperature. Sugar Paste is also growing in popularity and demand. Sugar Paste has the steepest learning curve but does produce fabulous results when administered by a seasoned professional of this technique. Unlike soft and hard wax which is applied with the direction of the hair growth, sugar paste is applied with a hand technique against the direction of the hair growth and removed with the angle of the follicle which reduces the likelihood of broken hair and ingrowns. Sugaring is the most hypoallergenic way to remove hair made from natural ingredients such as lemon, sugar, and water. Sugar paste is the best for sensitive skin and is applied at exceptionally low temperatures only adhering to hair and dead skin
cells and therefore carries the lowest risk of skin lifting.
MARKETING Once you get these aspects in place, you will want to start marketing this new service to your guests. Don’t underestimate the power of existing clients that are coming to you already for other salon or spa services as they have already bought into your brand. You will find opportunities with college students, young professionals, and a whole array of individuals who tend to become loyal clients especially if you have the gift of putting people at ease with a service that can produce some anxiety for newbies. Cross-promotion is an inexpensive way for industry professionals to gain more with each other. If you work in a salon or space with others that perform services you don’t and vice versa, support each other by referring guests to each other. Offering incentives for referrals is a fantastic way to increase your client list. Posting on social media like TikTok and Instagram with short fun videos that are targeted towards a specific audience in your area can help grab the attention of potential new clients. Use your unique personality and brand to develop an experience that is positive for your guests, elevates your offerings, and brings stability to your business through loyal clients with high frequency of visits. Imagine the possibilities!

Tips and techniques for Summer–proof makeup by Erica Vermin
Well, it's here, Summertime has arrived! That means your makeup routine will need to be changed up for your clients. Growing up in Philadelphia, I know a thing or two about humidity. Let me just tell you, it is not my friend. When you walk outside, the dampness hugs you like a blanket. Which is precisely the reason why I moved to the desert in Las Vegas! No matter what climate you live in, I'm going to help break down some products for a sweat-proof, smudge-proof makeup application. Your clients will love you forever!

Skin Prep: In every makeup applica-
tion, no matter where you live, skin prep is the most important part of your makeup. You will always struggle with staying power unless you properly prepare the skin. I prefer to start with a micellar water all over the face. This removes makeup, dirt or debris and tones the skin. If they have a little texture, I find a light exfoliant helps before laying down foundation. This will get rid of any dead skin cells on the surface and help eliminate excess oil. I love using either exfoliating wipes or pads. I then top it off with a little hydration spray and we’re ready to rock! If your clients have super sensitive skin, skip the exfoliant and just use a micellar water. You can also use a setting spray before applying foundation to really lock it in.
Eyes: You need an eye primer. This
helps with any creasing, discoloration, longevity, and makes the eyeshadow more vibrant. Prime under the eye if you are going to do a drop shadow. My two favorite options when it comes to eyeshadow are cream and powder. If you are using a cream, remember to always set it with a powder to prevent creasing. If you really don’t want your cream shadow to budge, you can mix in a waterproofing agent. Almost every makeup company makes a liquid product that can be mixed into your creams, gels, and powders to make them waterproof. This product will change your life for these hot summer nights! It can even be mixed in with mascara to make it waterproof. If powder is your thing, apply the shadow as you normally would and set it with a setting spray. If you are using a cream eyeliner, top it with the same color in a powder to set it. Another option is to use a waterproof eyeliner as your base all over the lid and top it off with a powder shadow. Blend the two together for extralong-lasting power. I also love using a setting spray in between the layers of my eyeshadow. If you want to add some glitter but want to avoid fallout,
mix glitter in with your eye primer or a sealant for that smudge-proof power.
Brows: Brow gels are usually used af-
ter applying the brow product. I have a secret tip… use a clear brow gel first before applying a shadow or pencil product. This will show you exactly where you need to fill in and give the product something to adhere to. Whether you are using a powder or pencil, you need a brow gel. If you are using a pomade, it is most likely already waterproof.
Lips: Liquid lipstick is a great option
for a long-lasting look. Goes on like a liquid, dries down matte! (Bonus tipyou can also use a liquid lipstick for eyeshadow and blush!) If liquid lipstick is too drying for your client, use a pencil to line and fill their lips. You can also dust the lips with a translucent powder to make matte. One of my favorite tricks is using a clear invisible wax liner to line the lips before applying the lip liner to prevent feathering. If you are doing a red lip to get that crisp liner, use a foundation or concealer one shade lighter and line the perimeter of the lip.
Base: When it comes to your founda-
tion in the summer months, matte is the
way to go if you are in a climate with a lot of humidity. Pair it with a matte moisturizer, primer and setting spray, for long wear. If you are in a dryer climate, it’s ok to use a foundation with a satin finish. Whatever foundation you use, be sure to set it with a powder. As for blushing, I like to use a cream and set it with a powder. Top off the look with a setting spray and your clients are ready for a night on the town! I truly geek out over being able to take care of my clients, and it brings so much joy to be able to share these tips with you. Summertime is here, but worry not, I have all the confidence your clients are in the best of hands. Hope you all have a sweat-proof summer!
