The President's Pen

As we move into Fall, I’d like to first thank everyone who took the time to come to the 150th anniversary celebration in Victoria, KS, in May. We had a fabulous turnout, great weather, fantastic food, and informative speakers. Many of us took the opportunity to tour the Grant home, and we’d like to thank Anne for all the work she put into this event.

The Junior Angus Preview show was well attended, and as always, the juniors represented Kansas well at the national show in Grand Island.

Check the fall calendar for Kansas member’s production sales coming up. If you are looking for marketing opportunities, consider the KAA sponsored Fall Investment Female sale in Manhattan and the ongoing commercial female sale in Pratt the first Saturday in December. The state fair is, again, an ROV show on September 16.

While I know the moisture has been spotty across the state, our area has benefited from almost 20 inches of rain over the Spring & Summer. This rain has helped not only our grass, but our dispositions, as well.

Wishing you all a happy and prosperous Fall!

Best wishes,

2023 Kansas Angus Association President 620-338-4021

Dean Klahr engages in premiere education BLI

Dean Klahr, Topeka, Kan., attended the 2023 Beef Leaders Institute (BLI) June 13-17. The annual event is hosted by the American Angus Association and funded by the Angus Foundation and Certified Angus Beef® brand (CAB®). BLI provides Association members the opportunity to experience the beef value chain from pasture to plate.

“It’s truly a privilege to welcome a new Beef Leaders Institute class each year,” said Mark McCully, Association CEO. “This unique experience fosters growth for attendees and provides an opportunity to connect with their fellow breeders.”

Participants began the week at the American Angus Association in Saint Joseph, Missouri. While at the breed’s headquarters, attendees met with staff to learn about the many departments and programs housed within the Association. Several Association employees offered insights, including Mark McCully; Kelli Retallick-Riley, Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI) president; and Clay Zwilling, Angus MediaSM president.

Attendees then hit the road, departing from Saint Joseph to further explore the production and processing sectors of the beef industry. They toured Tyson Fresh Meats in Dakota City, Nebraska, and Weborg Feedyards in Pender, Nebraska.

For the next leg of the trip, attendees traveled to Ohio to continue studying the beef value chain. While visiting Buckhead Toledo, Northwood, Ohio, participants experienced the preparation of value-added CAB® products. They explored the impact of genetics in the beef industry at STgenetics, Tiffin, Ohio.

The final days of the experience were spent in The Culinary Center at the CAB® brand’s headquarters in Wooster, Ohio. From a “Taste the Difference,” steak tasting to a hands-on beef fabrication demonstration in the meat lab, participants explored the specifications behind putting a CAB® steak on the dinner table. Their newly gained knowledge was even put to the test as they prepared their own steaks with the assistance of world-class chef, Venoy Roggers, III. During a week fully immersing themselves in the industry, the BLI class realized how the cattle they raise influence the industry well beyond their pastures.

“We’re always selling bulls and you see the commercial people, but you don’t really see what happens to the beef after it leaves,” said Trevor Hinkle, an attendee from Nevada, Missouri. “It’s just a really interesting process to see what happens after it gets to the packer, leaves the packer, and how there’s value made along the whole chain, and how many people are really working to do that. it’s a really eyeopening experience.”

Hinkle said he’s eager to take what he learned home and share it with his operation’s customers. He expressed his gratitude for the knowledge, perspective and new friendships gained throughout the week.

“We are proud to support educational opportunities like Beef Leaders Institute for our members,” said Jaclyn Boester, Angus Foundation executive director. “Providing experiences that prepare our breeders for success is a vital part of the Foundation’s mission to ensure a bright future for the breed.”

Providing continued education for the Angus membership is a priority for the Association. BLI is designed to equip members ages 25 to 45 with the resources to understand all segments of the beef industry. Attendees leave as stronger, more effective leaders for the Angus breed

and beef industry. To learn more about BLI, visit www.angus.org/Event/ BLIEntryForm. The 2024 application will be available in early November.

Yon Family Farms to donate 2024 Angus Foundation Heifer Package

Sale of Yon Sarah K1233 to support Angus Foundation’s mission of education, youth and research.

The 2024 Angus Foundation Heifer Package will be donated by Yon Family Farms of Ridge Spring, South Carolina. The heifer, Yon Sarah K1233 (AAA *20450734), is a maternal sister to both Yon Top Cut G730 (AAA +*19476453) and Yon Saluda (AAA +*20336998). Yon Sarah K1233 is safe in calf to Yon Toccoa F1054 (AAA +*19306162), with an anticipated due date of March 21, 2024.

The heifer, offered for sale in January at the 2024 Cattlemen’s Congress, will support the Foundation’s mission of furthering Angus education, youth and research efforts.

“It was very humbling for our family to even be asked to donate the heifer package to the Angus Foundation,” said Kevin Yon. “The Sarah cow family is one of those families here at Yon Family Farms that has done extremely well.” Yon Family Farms is a first-generation seedstock operation whose focus is to provide high quality, value-added cattle to satisfied customers. They aim for their customers to believe that honesty, quality, service and value are synonymous with their name. Kevin and Lydia Yon started the operation in 1996, and now work alongside their three children, Sally, Drake and Corbin, who each returned to the farm after attending college. The Yons host both a spring and fall production sale, selling around 425 registered Angus bulls and 200 females annually.

“We feel incredibly fortunate to have the Yon family offer this bred female from their proven donor, Yon Sarah D668,” said Jaclyn Boester, Angus Foundation executive director. “The Yon family is a testament to our mission, having participated in many opportunities supported by the Angus Foundation themselves. We can’t thank them enough for their dedication to the future of our breed.” The sale of the heifer package benefits the Angus Fund, which provides unrestricted funding for a variety of programs supported by the Angus Foundation Beef Leaders Institute, Leaders Engaged in Angus Development (LEAD) conference, Angus University and several ongoing research projects are among the numerous efforts funded by the Foundation.

The Heifer Package will sell Friday, January 5, 2024, prior to the start of the 85th National Angus Bull Sale during Cattlemen’s Congress. in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. For more information about the 2024 Angus Foundation Heifer Package, contact Boester at JBoester@Angus.org or visit www.AngusFoundation.org.

Kansas Junior Angus Association

Greetings Kansas Junior members!

I’m pleased to introduce myself, Jayce Dickerson, as your 2023-24 Junior Angus President. I proudly represent the sixth generation cattle producer in my family from Paradise, KS.

My passion for agriculture started at a very young age helping on my family’s ranch, Bar S Ranch. I’m now working full time back on the ranch immersed in the day to day operations.

My favorite past time is working in the showbarn. One of my biggest accomplishments in the Angus association happened last summer when I was elected to the National Junior Angus Board and recently this year positioned as the NJAB Education Director. Wearing the “Green Coat” has truly been an honor and privilege representing Kansas and our Angus youth.

I look forward to leading KJAA this next year. If I can help you or answer any questions you may have, please let me know. Also, please consider joining our Kansas Junior Angus Association Facebook Group as it is a great resource of information throughout the year and also check out the KJAA webpage www.kansasangus.org/KJAA for dates, deadlines and entry forms.

Sincerely,

Celebrating a Legacy, 150 Years of Angus in the US

Anne Lampe

Angus enthusiasts came together on May 20, 2023, to celebrate a legacy that started 150 years ago with a dream and four Angus bulls on the Kansas prairie.

Over 140 Angus breeders and local historians gathered at the Kansas Angus Association hosted Celebration & Field Day Commemorating 150 Years of Angus in the United States at the Grant Monument and Cemetery in Victoria, Kansas on the same prairie that George Grant and the first Angus came to in May of 1873.

On the cool spring morning field day guests were greeted at registration by Miss Kansas Angus Addie Haverkamp and Angus Ambassador Pariss Marsh and received a commemorative picnic blanket sponsored by PlainJans, Scott City, KS. From there guests were invited to network with each other while viewing the display cattle by Bar S Ranch, Bill & Donna Conley and Lazy H Ranch -Kansas. Angus memorabilia was offered during a silent auction and commemorative mugs were for sale. New updated signage at the monument sponsored by the American Angus Association was unveiled.

The sound of bagpipes signaled participants to move toward the Grant Monument as Haxton Hoffman, a 10-year-old bagpiper and rancher, Thedford, Nebraska played. The program started with a welcome from Victoria Mayor John Schulte and an invocation by Reverand Jim Moster, Basilica of Saint Fidelis, Cathedral of the Plains. Lunch featured Certified Angus Beef® smoked brisket, a welcome from Kansas Angus Association (KAA) President Darin Huck, DVM and a selection of bagpipe music.

A dynamic group of speakers led by a presentation on the first Angus Bulls journey to Victoria and beyond by Kurt Schaff, American Angus Hall of Fame; followed by a presentation by Kara Lee, Director of Producer Engagement, Certified Angus Beef, LLC. Rick Pfortmiller, Neogen shared information on the evolution of the beef business in Kansas. Kelli Retalik Riley, President of Angus Genetics, Inc., American Angus Association rounded out the educational sessions.

Ron Legleiter, owner of the historic George Grant Villa shared the history of the villa and invited all to visit and tour the historic site later in the day.

A live auction of the #1 commemorative cowboy hat “The Grant” handcrafted by Hamblen Hats, Ault, Colorado was held Jerry Theis was the high bidder. Proceeds of the sale of the #1 Grant were donated to the KAA by Hamblen. A limited number of these black Beaver Belly Flying H 200 hats that feature a silk-screened lining of the iconic “First Angus in the US is Launched” painting by Angus artist Frank C. Murphy and a numbered inner band can be purchased directly from Hamblen Hats, Travis Hamblen (970) 481-6989. 10% of each sale goes to the KAA.

Miss American Angus Kelsey Theis, Leavenworth presented the rededication of the Grant Monument. A wreath laying and more bagpipe music ended the day of celebration and comradery.

Angus Juniors Participate in Carcass Contest Kansas Tops State Group Competition

The demand for carcass merit drives the beef industry. In recent years, the push for quality has increased. National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) members rose to the challenge of providing both during this year’s National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) carcass contest. The carcass contest allows for a shift in perspective at the NJAS. Instead of leading the animal into the show ring, they lead steers onto a truck to be harvested. In the days following, the steers are evaluated, graded and their carcass data is reported.

“My experience with this contest has been very good,” said 14-year-old Corbin Russell of Paxico, Kansas. “I’ve learned to feed and manage cattle better, and I’ve had the opportunity to meet very nice people that run this event.”

Twenty-seven entries from eight states competed in the 2023 carcass contest in Grand Island, Nebraska. The top-ranking steers were announced at the NJAS awards ceremony on July 7.

“This contest gives youth exhibitors a look at the final product and outcome of their toils and their breeding in many cases,” said Paul Dykstra, director of supply management and analysis for the Certified Angus Beef® (CAB) brand. “They understand more about the drivers of quality, final premiums and discounts. They also see how the production side results in a carcass cutout value that differs based on the quality and attributes of one’s cattle.”

Owen Austrino of Dade City, Florida exhibited the grand champion carcass steer. His steer graded prime with a yield grade of 2.6 and hit the 10 specifications to qualify for the CAB brand. The steer had a 12.8 square inch (sq. in.) ribeye area and a hot carcass weight of 791 pounds (lb.). Austrino received a $40.00 per hundred weight (cwt.) grid premium, $1.00 per cwt. higher than the 2022 champion.

Brazos Worrell of Harper, Texas took home honors for reserve champion carcass steer. His steer graded choice with a yield grade of 3.3. The steer had a 12.3 sq. in. ribeye area and an 869 lb. hot carcass weight. Worrell’s steer qualified for the CAB brand, and he was awarded a $25.00 cwt. grid premium.

The champion bred and owned carcass steer was exhibited by Alexis Vandeberghe of Cleveland, North Dakota. Her steer graded choice with a yield grade of 3.6. The steer had a 10.4 sq. in. ribeye area, a 768 lb. hot carcass weight, and earned the CAB brand designation. Vandeberghe received a $23.00 cwt. grid premium.

Kye Lehenbauer of Palmyra, Missouri presented the reserve champion bred and owned carcass steer. His steer graded select with a yield grade of 3.4. The steer exhibited a 10.7 sq. in. ribeye area with a 791 lb. hot carcass weight.

NJAA members also competed in the contest through state groups of carcasses. Three steers grouped together by at least two exhibitors constituted a state group.

► As a state group, the Kansas 3 team won averaging a $179.65 carcass premium per head. Team members included Corbin Russell and Kirwin Russell of Paxino, Kansas.

► The reserve state group was also from Kansas The Kansas 4 team averaged $163.10 carcass premium per head. Team members included Carsen Rinkes and Conner Rinkes of Holton, Kansas.

The top steer exhibitors were awarded contest premiums beyond their carcass premiums. Contestants also received carcass data in return to make improvements in their selection decisions, creating teachable moments for the membership and fostering the future of the beef industry.

Cash awards presented to exhibitors placing 1st-50th were made possible by the Briarwood Angus Farms/ Curtis and Ann Long NJAS Carcass Contest Endowment Fund. Dr. Curtis Long and his late wife, Ann Long, placed significance on the value of pertinent carcass information. Their endowment fund will permanently support the NJAS Carcass Contest.

Exhibitors who presented carcasses that met CAB standards received an additional 25 percent in premiums. It was the Longs’ hope that due to this permanent endowment; Angus youth would develop a better understanding of the economic benefits derived from producing outstanding beef carcasses.

Pounds, efficiency, gain, marbling, yield… the industry always wants MORE. But those extra few pounds or percent often come with increases in labor, problems, feed or other inputs.

For decades, we have focused on optimal animal performance AND labor-saving foundation traits like foot soundness, fertility, longevity, sound udders and docility.

While this “systems approach” to genetic selection may not produce THE bull with THE most of a given trait or EPD, it results in hundreds that find that sweet spot between sensible inputs and optimal outputs.
