Electrical & plumbing

TIPS

expert tips Electrical

Plumbing Jimi from BluFrog Plumbing & Gas is your local plumbing expert

Circuit breaker or safety switch?

Low water pressure? Here’s why

Circuit breakers and safety switches might sound similar, but they do very different jobs. A circuit breaker protects your electrical system by cutting power when there’s a fault, like an overload or short circuit, to prevent damage and fire. A safety switch protects you - it instantly shuts off the power if it detects a leakage of electricity that could cause electric shock. Having both means your home and the people in it are properly protected from electrical hazards.

Low water pressure can be frustrating, especially when showers turn to trickles and taps take forever to fill the sink. Common causes include mineral buildup in pipes or aerators, a partially closed valve, or leaks that reduce water flow. Sometimes the issue lies with the water main or pressure regulator outside your home. If only one area is affected, it might be a localised blockage – but if it’s throughout the house, it could be time to call a plumber for a proper check.

Waterproofing and leak repairs A leaky shower can cause serious issues if it’s not repaired fast. Water seeping through tiles and grout can weaken walls, floors, and ceilings, causing mould, stains, and even electrical hazards. They can check your shower and make any necessary repairs.

Replacement tiles Got a cracked tile? No worries! The experienced team can take a look and repair or replace any damaged tiles, keeping your walls and floors looking fabulous and functional! Whether it’s for your bathroom or laundry, it will make a huge difference.

Epoxy grout is known for its durability, stain resistance, and ability to withstand harsh cleaning chemicals. Unlike traditional cement-based grout, epoxy grout is less porous, making it ideal for areas that are prone to moisture and staining, such as bathrooms and kitchens.

How to cut house cleaning time Keeping your home looking its best doesn’t have to take hours. A few simple strategies can help you free up time for the things you’d rather be doing. Keep supplies where you need them

Focus on one room

Store cleaning products close to where you use them. Keeping bathroom cleaner in the bathroom and a multi-purpose spray in the kitchen makes quick touchups easier.

Finish one space before starting another. It’s often faster and gives a satisfying sense of progress.

Clean from top to bottom Always dust shelves, benches and other surfaces before vacuuming or mopping. Any dust or crumbs that fall will be picked up at the end, so you won’t need to go over the same area twice. 6

Set a timer Work steadily for 15 or 20 minutes. A short, focused clean is often surprisingly productive.

Share the workload If you live with others, dividing household jobs saves time and helps keep everything ticking along. Many hands really do make light work.

IN THE GARDEN

Drift away with

ornamental grasses

Add gentle movement and flow to your garden with ornamental grasses and strap leaf plants. Ranging in colour and stature, they’re a versatile addition to modern, naturalistic or cottage gardens. Feature planting

Borders and Edging

For a stunning result, mass plant the same variety into drifts. If you are short on space then choose an odd number like three or five to group together.

Break up garden paths with the feathery outlines of strappy grass. Plants such as small Kangaroo Paws, Liriope Monroe, small Lomandra varieties, Uncinia rubra, Blue Fescue and Mondo grass are great performers. Blue Fescue is also a great little ground cover growing to 20cm. After about four years you need to thin out the older plants leaving the self sown seedlings to spring up. Strappy leaf plants such as Carex or Dianellas with their tiny purple flowers in spring and summer add colour to your landscape design.

Tall grasses make a great backdrop allowing for an understory of native grasses, native plants or cottage garden species. If your budget allows, reclaimed mature Native Grass Trees (Xanthorrhoea Supergrass) are the ultimate living sculpture. They require a specialist for installation, including a donor soil health check. Mulla Mulla

Native Grass Tree

Soils and Watering Most grasses like similar conditions to Australian native plants with free draining soil. They are waterwise and drought tollerant once established. Strap leaf plants often require a bit more water, but do come in waterwise varieties. (Please read the growers instructions on individual varieties as their needs vary.)

3 Uses for epsom salts

Put a lazy Susan in the fridge for easy access to frequently used sauces and jars without moving everything around constantly.

Skin: Mix Epsom salt with a little bath oil or coconut 1 Eoilxfoliate to make a gritty paste. Gently massage onto rough areas like elbows, heels and knees. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.

oost Plant Growth: Mix 1 tbsp per litre of water and use it as a B liquid fertiliser or leaf spray. Apply every 2–4 weeks.

ix equal parts Epsom salt and conditioner, then comb through 3 M hair and leave for 20 minutes before rinsing. Helps remove oil and product buildup. For sensitive scalps, apply to hair only.

Shelf liners Place placemats on fridge and pantry shelves for easy cleanup. When they get dirty, simply remove them, wipe them down, and return them to the shelf.

Magic tape Mark a piece of tape to match the spacing of the holes on the object you’re mounting. Stick the tape onto the surface, use the marks as your drilling guide, and drill accurately without measuring twice.

Remote power switch Control lamps, fans and other plug-in appliances with a wireless remote control power outlet. Simply plug it in—no wiring or tools required. Convenient, easy to use and ideal for hard-to-reach switches.

Stop the slip Sprinkle a few drops of water on a baking tray before adding baking paper when cooking. The moisture helps hold the paper in place and prevents it from curling or slipping while you position it.

Stay connected at home A reliable internet connection and strong TV signal and can make everyday life at home a little easier – whether you’re streaming your favourite shows, working from home or keeping the kids entertained.

Better reception, less frustration

A neater entertainment space

There’s nothing more frustrating than channels dropping out or a picture that keeps freezing. Digital antennas and updated equipment can improve reception, delivering clearer sound and picture quality for a more enjoyable experience.

Extra TV outlets, wall-mounted televisions and home theatre systems can help create a cleaner, more practical living area. Older properties can also benefit from upgrading outdated equipment and replacing weathered antenna components.

Keeping up with modern living

Why expert advice helps

With smart TVs, gaming consoles, laptops and mobile devices all competing for bandwidth, many homes need more than a basic internet connection. Data points and cabling can help to provide stable connectivity where it’s needed most.

Every home is different, and finding the right solution can save time and frustration. Expert advice from professionals will make sure you get the right setup to keep everyone connected. ✏ Courtesy of Little Aussie Communities

EASY RECIPES

Maple Dijon Chicken

with Roasted Sweet Potato

z 2-3 medium sweet potatoes, peeled & cut into bite-sized pieces z 6 chicken thighs (boneless, skinless) z Olive oil, salt & pepper z 60g baby spinach

Maple Dijon Sauce ingredients z 1/4 cup pure maple syrup z 2 tbs Dijon mustard z 1 tbs soy sauce z 1/2 cup water z 1/2 chicken stock cube z 2 cloves garlic, minced z 1 tsp cornflour mixed with 2 tbs water

Preheat the oven to 220C (200C fan). Whisk together the Maple Dijon Sauce ingredients in a jug or bowl. Set aside. Place the prepared sweet potato onto a baking tray in a single layer. Drizzle with a little olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Bake for 20 minutes, then give the tray a shake and bake a further 5-10 minutes, until the sweet potato starts to caramalise at the edges. While the sweet potato is cooking, unroll the chicken thighs and pat dry with paper towel. Season with salt and pepper and drizzle with a little olive oil. Cook the chicken thighs in a large frypan over medium-high heat, 6 minutes each side, then remove them from the frypan and place on a chopping board.

Pour the maple Dijon sauce into the frypan and stir until it begins to thicken slightly. Remove pan from heat. Slice the chicken thighs and add them to the frypan along with any juices from the chicken. Add the roasted sweet potato. Return frypan to the heat and bring back to a simmer for another two or three minutes, until the chicken is cooked through. Add the baby spinach at the very end and stir until it’s just wilted. A simple way to freshen your home Carpets take a lot of punishment, from pets and spills to daily wear and tear. Over time, this can cause grime build-up that causes damage, so regular care can make all the difference.

Hidden nasties Dust, allergens and odours settle where vacuuming can’t always reach. Getting rid of that build-up improves hygiene, supports better indoor air quality and keeps your home feeling fresher and more comfortable.

The right clean for your carpet Steam cleaning, dry cleaning, stain removal, deodorising – different carpets call for different approaches. The correct method will lift dirt effectively without stressing the fibres, helping your carpet hold its appearance and stay in good condition.

Tackling the tough spots Spills and pet accidents are part of life. Focused treatment on stains and high-traffic areas restores a more even look – and acting quickly helps stop marks from becoming permanent.

Help your carpet go the distance Ground-in dirt gradually breaks down fibres, adding up to noticeable wear. Regular cleaning slows that process, helping your carpet keep its texture and appearance for longer – and meaning you won’t need to replace it as soon. ✏ Courtesy of Little Aussie Communities

Keep your car in good shape Whether your car gets plenty of use or spends more time in the garage, regular maintenance is one of the best ways to keep it safe, reliable and running smoothly.

Early warning signs One of the biggest benefits of regular maintenance is spotting issues early. A warning light, unusual noise or change in performance may seem minor, but having it checked sooner rather than later could help avoid a more expensive repair further down the track.

Everyday performance A well-maintained car is often more fuel efficient and enjoyable to drive. Regular servicing can also reduce wear and tear on important components and help maintain your vehicle’s resale value.

Regular servicing From oil and filter changes to checking tyres, brakes and fluid levels, routine checks help to keep everything working properly and could even extend the life of your vehicle.

Reliable motoring Breakdowns are never fun. Keeping up with routine maintenance can help reduce the risk of avoidable problems and keep your car performing reliably, whether you’re heading to work, running errands or planning a road trip. ✏ Article courtesy of Little Aussie Communities

More than just a door Most people don’t give their garage door much thought until it starts making strange noises, stops when it’s halfway open or refuses to move at all.

A quick fix today can often prevent a major inconvenience later.

Regular maintenance

Smart upgrades

Like any mechanical system, garage doors experience wear and tear over time. Springs can weaken, tracks can shift and motors can become less reliable. Regular servicing helps keep everything operating as it should, whilst also reducing the risk of breakdowns.

Timely repairs Small issues can be easy to ignore – until they become bigger and more expensive. Professional garage door technicians can identify worn parts, adjust moving components and make sure the door is operating safely.

Many homeowners are choosing to upgrade to automatic systems for smoother operation. Features such as remote access, battery backup and improved security can make everyday use easier while adding convenience.

Added value Your garage door plays an important role so whether you need a repair, replacement or new, a garage door expert will make sure everything is installed and working as it should. ✏ Courtesy of Little Aussie Communities

Rekeying - the smart way to stay secure If you’ve recently bought a home, misplaced a key or want extra peace of mind, having your locks rekeyed is an easy way to improve security.

Keep your existing locks

Rather than replacing the entire lock, a locksmith changes the internal pins so previous keys stop working and supplies a new set of keys. It’s a straightforward solution that improves security while allowing you to keep your current locks and door hardware.

Save time and money

Rekeying is generally more affordable than installing brand-new locks and is often completed in one appointment. It’s a practical option for homeowners who want better security without the extra cost of full lock replacement.

Ideal for new homeowners After moving house, it’s impossible to know who may still have a copy of the old keys. Rekeying gives you confidence that only your new keys can unlock your doors.

Improve security

An experienced locksmith can rekey many types of residential locks efficiently. It’s a simple, budget-friendly upgrade that helps protect your home without the need for major changes. ✏ Courtesy of Little Aussie Communities
