ANTONIO CITTERIO PATRICIA VIEL UNVEILS RESTYLING OF ENEL'S HISTORIC HQ IN ROME
nternational architecture and design firm Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel (ACPV) unveils the restyling of historic HQ of Italian multinational energy company ENEL, in Rome. The intervention by ACPV reimagines a building from the 1960s, rewriting it with completely different functional principles that realign it with the work needs of tomorrow - having corporate welfare, urban regeneration, innovation and sustainability at the heart of the project.
The redevelopment covers a total area of 80,000 sqm with a project designed to increase people's well-being through modern and comfortable workspaces, and enhance agile working. The lighting and air conditioning systems will guarantee the highest levels of comfort, while spaces will be distributed to increase people’s well-being through the alternation of work environments and indoor and outdoor green spaces. A gym will also be added to the existing facilities that include a kindergarten, dining areas, and an auditorium.
Working on the redevelopment of the historic Enel headquarters in Rome, ACPV's intervention brings to life a “building-city”, composed of towers that are harmonised by the newly found transparency of the building envelope. The glass of the new façade invites the eye to leap between architecture and the surrounding vegetation. The new headquarters will be built by applying innovative principles of bioclimatic, sustainable and biophilic design. A digital model (BIM) was used for the design, which collects and renders information and 3D representations of the project’s entire life cycle, allowing for a more efficient and sustainable management both of the construction site and the building. www.citterio-viel.com

SEAL IT WITH ENERGY EFFICIENT TAPES

ACOUSTIC PANELS CAN EMBRACE THE EXTREME
Recent tests have shown that Troldtekt acoustic panels withstand moisture levels up to 98%, even when combined with high temperatures up to 40°C. These latest tests were carried out by the accredited Danish Technological Institute to the European product standard for suspended ceilings (EN 13964).
While the composition of the panels has remained unchanged, this new round of stringent testing reinforces the fact that the panels are suitable for the most demanding of wet, warm and humid environments. They do not warp over time, giving them a life span in excess of 50 years. NEW HYDRAULIC DESIGN SOFTWARE FOR HAURATON SURFACE DRAINAGE SYSTEMS

RADIATORS WORK WITH LOW TEMPERATURE SYSTEMS
Stelrad is seeing its radiators being specified more and more for renewable heating systems as the popularity of heat pumps rises. Radiators are still a popular and sensible choice as homeowners are familiar with how they heat their homes, and when properly sized, they are the perfect solution to share heat from heat pump installations. All radiators should be sized correctly for the rooms they are installed in and Stelrad offer a free radiator sizing and heat loss calculator on its website.
You will require larger radiators for a renewable, low temperature system than you would for a traditional boiler driven heating system because the water flow temperature in the system is lower. But that can mean a larger radiator possibly a vertical radiator, or one of the increasingly popular K3 radiators – with three panels and three fins –with the same radiator footprint for a room as a current K2 radiator, but with 50% additional metal surface to provide increased heat levels.

EUROBRICK SELECTED BY MARKS AND SPENCER FOR FOOD HALLS
Marks and Spencer is currently undertaking a building programme of new food halls alongside refitting some of its stores throughout the UK. Eurobrick is proud to be supplying I-Clad along with brick slips to Marks & Spencer’s contractors and installers as part of the interior shop fitout. To date, a total of 21 stores, from London to Edinburgh, have been completed using around 1375 m² of I-Clad, Eurobrick’s brick slip system.
I-Clad can be fixed to timber or light gauge steel studs and has a plasterboard panel with a horizontal ribbed profile which aligns and supports the brick slips making the formation of brick courses quick and easy. I-Clad has an installed system depth starting from just 28mm. Using real brick slips, the look and feel of traditional brickwork is achieved but at a fraction of the depth of full bricks. At approximately 50Kg per m², the installed system also poses fewer issues in terms of additional loads, than traditional brickwork.
In the majority of stores, Eurobrick supplied its Red Blue Flamed brick slips, which are a light textured sanded red with a blue, grey multi-effect, creating a consistent design style. www.eurobrick.co.uk

CREATING ASSISTED LIVING TECHNOLOGIES OF THE FUTURE
Demonstrating how assisted living technologies can transform lives, advanced solutions from award winning manufacturer and designer, Pressalit, have been chosen to feature in the National Robotarium, the UK’s largest and most advanced centre for robotics and artificial intelligence, which recently opened in Edinburgh.

HOWE GREEN SUPPORTS SUCCESSFUL SPECIFICATION AT BOND STREET STATION
As one of nine new stations developed as part of the construction of the Elizabeth line, Bond Street Station will facilitate up to 137,000 passengers per day, with up to 22 trains passing through the station every hour at peak times from November 6 this year and up to 24 trains per hour from May 2023.
Providing interchanges for the Central and Jubilee lines, the newly constructed Bond Street station will significantly improve accessibility for travellers, whilst simultaneously increasing capacity at one of the busiest shopping districts in the UK.
The development of the station included the specification of 200 Howe Green stainless steel floor access covers as part of the structural and architectural design process to provide secure and concealed access to under-floor services. Installed throughout the entire station, which includes two newly constructed ticket halls at street
level and all underground passenger platforms that can be as long as 255 metres, the medium-duty 7500 Series Floor Access Covers were manufactured to meet the project’s extensive requirements.
With over 50 kilometres of communications cabling, 200 CCTV cameras, 66 information displays, 200 radio antennas, 750 loudspeakers and 50 help points, an essential element of the specification process was ensuring the covers were tamper proof, without preventing contractors from gaining quick and easy access to the services below.
Manufactured with unobtrusive barrel cover lifting points that can only be accessed with unique lifting and securing keys, the access covers are protected from unauthorised access, without impacting the overall design scheme, as only the securing bolt and barrel edge are visible.
The method of removing the covers also ensures the products can be handled easily and safely by contractors, eliminating any potential strain or harm, regardless of the covers’ combined weight with the hard flooring finishes. This is due to the lifting blocks being anchored to the inner frame. Throughout maintenance-only areas, the lifting mechanisms of the floor access covers are mechanically assisted with pistons so engineers can securely lift the covers from underneath.
Installed in conjunction with terrazzo flooring across the platforms, and Portuguese granite throughout the ground floor public areas, the 7500 Series Floor Access Covers seamlessly blend with the architectural finishes of the station for a streamlined visual effect. This sleek aesthetic is further enhanced by the tiling modules, which create a unified and cohesive finish, simultaneously eradicating any potential trip hazards, as the access covers are
installed entirely flush with the hard flooring. The minimal profile of the edges also reflects the dimension of the joins between the tiles to create a perfect finish, even when working with the radial sections of stone tiling on curved passages and walkways, which required individual access covers constructed of curvilinear profiles to deliver a high quality, bespoke finish.
Each of the covers withstand up to five tonne pneumatic tyre wheel loads. Manufactured to BS 476: Part 22: 1987, the covers’ ability to eliminate the potential transmission of smoke and fire from the underground services in the event of a fire was another key consideration of the specification process. www.howegreen.com
Leading HVAC manufacturer LG has recently launched a New Build Design Service, to assist new build developers including social housing developers when specifying heat pumps into new homes. In the short time it has been in place, it has already been welcomed by new build developers taking advantage of the new service.
This new service is for developments of 6 or more plots and will provide full designs for plumbing and heating layouts along with equipment schedules that specify the heat pump required, radiator or underfloor manifold heating positions, pipework type and length and controls to ensure that the system which is specified will provide the necessary heating and hot water solution for any house archetype.
Furthermore, LG also offers a unique service for CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis, determining the optimal location and performance simulation of the outdoor units.

LONDON SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS RECEIVES AIRTIGHT SOLUTION
The Marshall Building, part of the renowned London School of Economics has been fitted with the Wraptite external air barrier system from the A. Proctor Group. Part of a winning design created by Grafton Architects, the impressive 10-storey building features pale stone cladding and is home to a series of educational facilities including lecture theatres, offices, classrooms, and a sports hall. Specialist contractor, I & S Construction, Dartford consulted with the A. Proctor Group’s technical team and selected the Wraptite air barrier to be incorporated within the external wall cladding system. Wraptite is the only self-adhering vapour permeable air barrier certified by the BBA and combines the critical properties of vapour permeability and airtightness in one self-adhering membrane. This approach saves on both the labour and material costs associated with achieving the energy efficiency demands in buildings. Wraptite is Class B1-s1,d0, compliant with Approved Document B Building Regulations for use in the external wall systems of buildings over 18m in height, both as a continuous layer on sheathing board, behind fire classified insulation, and for use to tape joints in insulation behind rainscreen. www.proctorgroup.com
PROFAB ACCESS ADDS A FIVE STAR FINISH TO CARDIFF’S NEWEST LUXURY HOTEL
Leading riser door and access panel solution supplier, Profab Access, has proven its first-class credentials once again as part of the recent completion of a major specification at Cardiff’s new 5-star Parkgate hotel. Located next to the Welsh Capital’s famous Principality Stadium, the Parkgate hotel has been designed to provide a luxurious experience for rugby fans, in addition to city dwellers visiting the country all year round.
Widely coined as Cardiff’s most lavish new location, the hotel includes 170 guest bedrooms and suites, a signature restaurant and bar, a traditional tea lounge and a rooftop spa overlooking the city skyline. As part of the prestigious build, a unique collaboration between the Welsh Rugby Union, property developer, Rightacres, and The Celtic Collection, the hotel required an extensive riser door specification, with safety, high performance and aesthetic appeal key considerations.
In total, 310 Profab Access VEGA 1500 Fire Rated Riser Doors were specified for installation by Hazelwood Carpentry throughout every part of the building, including communal areas and the hotel’s vast range of luxury guest rooms and suites. The VEGA 1500 Series Riser Doors offer the highest standards of fire safety, extensively tested by Efectis in France and Ireland to provide a bi-directionally fire tested product that is available in both single and double door configurations.
This means the riser door sets are fire tested from both sides to 60 minutes, providing the specifiers, contractors and hotel guests residing within the building with confidence the critical fire integrity products offer the highest standard and most up to date evidence for fire safety performance. The range also features a slimline, neat construction, whilst its proven technology ensures permanent, safe access to mechanical and electrical services housed within the riser core.
This provides first class functionality and safety, without compromising the overall interior concept. The steel riser doors also streamlined the installation process, as the quick release pivot hinge and light weight enabled easy handling, allowing Hazelwood Carpentry to complete the job quickly and optimise overall project efficiencies.
In the event of a fire, the VEGA 1500 Series Riser Door sets will maintain the frame and integrity for up to 60 minutes, preventing the spread of fire throughout the property for this period of time. The riser doors are 31dB acoustic rated, smoke sealed and airtight to Part L, whilst also featuring intumescent smoke seals that enable occupants to safely exit the building. CHEERS! CRITTALL BOOSTS BREWERY TRANSFORMATION
Described as Dorchester’s most iconic building, the Brewery – once the source of the much-quaffed Eldridge Pope ales – has been transformed into a high-end residential setting with Crittall windows playing a central role in retaining the heritage aesthetic of this historic structure. For nearly a century and a half the building, with its tall chimney, towered above the Dorset town as a symbol of local industry and prosperity.
Designed by architect WR Crickmay the brick building was completed in 1880. At a staggering 13% the brewery’s Thomas Hardy Ale once featured in the Guinness Book of Records as the strongest commercially brewed beer in the country.
The brewery eventually closed in 2003 and the site remained unused until, in 2007, planning permission was granted for a new public square overlooked by the impressive building, restored to its former glory containing 29 one, two and threebedroom apartments.
LMA Architecture of Bournemouth has retained many of the unique
features of the original building including riveted steel beams, cast iron columns and exposed brickwork.
Crittall Corporate W20 steel windows and doors were a natural choice, glazed in small panes to replicate the original configuration of the tall brewery windows.

At the event, the Aluprof team and their guests were delighted to see that three of the prestigious project awards on the evening used Aluprof aluminium systems to complete their facades.
Held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London’s Mayfair on the 1st of November, the event this year was hosted by Jimmy Carr and was attended by more than 1,100 people. Chloe McCulloch, Editorial Director at Building, said: "The judges felt truly uplifted by the quality of the submissions this year, pointing to the resilience of this industry in the face of unprecedented headwinds."
Sponsoring the ‘Building Magazine Project of the Year’, Aluprof UK was delighted to present the award to the Houlton School project in Rugby by the team Urban & Civic, Morgan Sindall Construction and van Heyningen and Haward Architects. The project uses Aluprof’s MB-70 window system which was installed by Dotcom Glazing. The former Rugby Radio Station building was redesigned with further listed buildings on the site to form the new state school delivered by the private sector.
The ‘Refurbishment Project of the Year’ winner was the Bodmin Jail Hotel entered by CField Construction. This project takes a grade two listed derelict and dilapidated 18 th century Cornish Prison which is then converted into a seventy bedroom, boutique four star hotel. Each of the bedrooms has been formed using three former cells and retains many of the building's original features, such as the window bars, stone floors, walls and ceilings, with many further features of the original prison woven into the building fabric.
Aluprof UK supplied their MB Slimline window system used for the cell windows which is a slim sightline aluminium system which looks like a steel window system but incorporates a full thermal break.
The ‘Digital Excellence Award’ winner, entered by Sir Robert McAlpine and Mace, was The Forge in south London’s Southwark. Designed by architects Bryden Wood, introducing a raft of digital technology proposals which enabled Landsec to achieve its innovative ambitions for the scheme. The Forge aspires to be the first commercial building constructed and operated in line with the UKGBC’s net zero definition and energy reduction targets. It comprises two new office buildings and a public courtyard.
Located on Sumner Street, The Forge is a Landsec office development located just behind Tate Modern in London and is one of the most innovative construction sites in London, pioneering several new construction methods fit for the decades ahead. Breaking new ground, the project will be the world’s first large-scale office scheme to be built using a standardised “kit of parts”, in an approach known as ‘platform design for manufacture and assembly’ (P-DfMA), which applies the advances made by the manufacturing industry to construction.
The unitised curtain wall used on the project was designed in close collaboration with Bryden Wood, which allowed Aluprof to develop a highly-efficient facade unit. The full-size units have been rigorously tested in Aluprof’s Research and Innovation Centre in Ogrodzona where they passed air leakage, impact, wind resistance, and water penetration tests.
The units were manufactured in Poland and transported in purpose designed, reusable stillages which were lifted to the floor plates using a combination of large material hoists and tower cranes for installation by specialist installers NACWL.
A key feature of the stillage design was to protect the units from any stress and impact during transportation and lift. The new bespoke system has been named as MB-SE120 and has a UW value of <1.3 W(m2K).

SETTING STANDARDS THROUGH COMPETENCY
Ken Price, Managing Director of the Automatic Door Suppliers Association, outlines why ‘competency’ should have positive rather than negative connotations.

When you think of competency, what are the first things that spring to mind? It is often a word preceded with something negative: “lack of” or “basic” but as the dictionary definition above points out, competency is the ability to do something successfully or efficiently. The need to prove or demonstrate competency is the basis of creating and maintaining standards around which industries are held to account.
In the construction industry, this has never been more relevant than it is today. In September, the Competency Steering Group (CSG) Working Group 12 - Construction Products Competence, led by the Construction Products Association, produced a white paper ‘Built EnvironmentProposed Construction Product Competence Standard’. This proposes that the industry unite behind a single approach to achieve a construction product competence standard.
It highlights that radical change is needed by organisations and individuals who supply or work, have a need for proper assessment and an assurance of competence. The white paper was a response to Dame Judith Hackitt's report ‘Building A Safer Future’ following the Grenfell Tower Fire. This also led to the creation of the Building Safety Act. All industries in the built environment sector use construction products but misuse can lead to dangerous and potentially fatal outcomes.
Ensuring those who use those products are competent is vital if we are to create built environments that are safe, efficient and perform well. This requires implementation across the supply chain; manufacturing, design, sub contractors and those responsible for maintenance. Professional and trade associations continue to work tirelessly to ‘higher the bar’ but applying consistency across the board must now be part of our focus. It is sad fact, that tragedy is often a primary driver for change. A fatality involving a powered pedestrian door led to the formation of the Automatic Door Suppliers Association in 1985.
Its founding desire was to improve skills and competence and 37 years on that remains at the heart of what we do. Dictionary definitions around capability frequently highlight the need for “knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform critical work functions”. However, it is useful to consider the Health and
Safety Executive’s take as being, a “combination of training skills, experience and knowledge that a person has and their ability to apply them to perform a task safely.” This meaning hits on a subtle difference – it puts the “person” at the centre of the requirement. The reality is that competence is not just about job knowledge but also a person’s willingness and attitude. Training alone does not achieve competence. Acquired knowledge will decline or be superseded over time, requiring professional skills to be regularly refreshed.
This is why Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is essential – initiating a personal commitment to maintain and update knowledge. Within the automatic door industry, this applies not only to technicians but to all professionals within associated organisations – from major manufacturers to sole traders.
ADSA encourages CPD through a number of initiatives. This includes our soon-to-be launched Pinnacle Programme which will offer role-based NVQ qualifications for advancement or lateral progression across a series of vocational skills at various levels. The ADSA Academy is also a vital resource - an online learning platform, it is available to all employees of member companies.
It hosts more than 100 courses – 30 new ones have been added this year. It includes general and role specific learning along with technical updates. Build UK and the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS card) drives the vetting of competence for site-based construction workers.
Digitisation has made competency more transparent by enabling organisations and their on-site card checkers greater accessibility to records. A total of 2.1 million cards across the industry can now be verified using a mobile phone app - an easy and secure way of ensuring everyone on site has the right qualifications and training for their allocated jobs.
As one of the 38 card scheme delivery partners, ADSA was delighted to play an active role in making this initiative become a reality. As part of the steering group leading up to its launch earlier this year, we worked to apply a technical solution to enable fail-safe checks that would also allow card holders to update personal information. Of course, competency needs to be assessed in order to be ensure its validity.
NVQs have become a critical way to achieve this - especially for those who are established field based workers. From December 2024, it will no longer possible to issue skilled worker competency cards under the old ‘grandfather rights’. This will end and only those with industry based NVQs or apprenticeship qualifications will be regarded as skilled workers.
The role of the Entrance Systems Alliance (ESA) – our training and NVQ delivery partnership with the Door and Hardware Federation (DHF) - is facilitating this change and underpins our aim for education, standards and advancement. Developing future workforces through apprenticeships is a sure fire way to encourage
a new generation into specialist or niche sectors of the construction industry, helping curb potential skills shortages.
Apprenticeships are a springboard which equips newcomers with academic and practical learning, that must be evidenced in order to achieve. Within the Powered Pedestrian Door (PPD) industry, ADSA has led the way by creating the PPD Technician Apprenticeship which has seen four cohorts launch their careers through South Staffordshire College, with South Eastern Regional College, in Northern Ireland, soon to welcome another. ny negativity around “competence” must now make way for the positive progression it generates as it paves the way for ever higher standards. www.adsa.org.uk

THREE THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN SPECIFYING ROOF ACCESS HATCHES
When choosing roof access hatches for commercial or residential projects, there are a number of factors that must be addressed at the initial design stages in order to not only achieve a successful specification, but also deliver safe and sufficient access for the entire lifecycle of the building. Here Tony Stevens, Technical Estimator at Bilco UK, discusses which factors should be taken into consideration when selecting Roof Access Hatches:
1) Purpose for access - Whether for the education, healthcare, leisure or commercial sectors, roof access hatches are required to provide permanent and secure access to the roof area. In order to make sure you’re choosing the correct system to meet your project’s unique requirements, you must first identify the main reason for requiring access to the roof.
Is it purely for maintenance reasons? Or will a safe means of access also be required for the regular installation or removal of equipment from the roof? Here you should also identify what tools and equipment will need to be transferred through the access hatch, or whether it will just be the individual themselves that is conducting the necessary work.
2) Frequency and product specification
- Once you have established your reason for requiring safe access to the roof, you will then be able to make an informed choice regarding which roof access hatch and corresponding ladder system is best suited to meet the needs of your project.
It is important to specify the correct Roof Access Hatch and Ladder combination to ensure that access from the ladder, through the roof access hatch, is as safe as possible. For example, a small roof access hatch should be accessed via a fixed vertical ladder, which is also the most suitable option for projects where space is limited.
Alternatively, if you use a companionway ladder or a retractable ladder, the roof access hatch length must be extended to around 1500 mm to provide for easy and safe access.
However, here it should be noted that a minimum head clearance of 120mm is required and that the maximum single climb is no more than three metres, in accordance with BS4211- 7.2. Regardless of the size of the roof access hatch, the system should be operated easily and safely with one hand, in accordance with the requirements outlined within the Manual Handling Regulations, enabling the individual to maintain three points of contact with the fixed ladder.
During the installation process, the ladder must be positioned opposite the hinge to ensure safe and unobstructed access. If access to the roof is required on a regular basis for professionals that will have to transfer tools and equipment through the hatch, a Fixed Staircase Roof Access Hatch, also known as a Service Stair Roof Access Hatch, should be specified with a Companionway Ladder or a Fixed Staircase.
It should here be noted that the roof hatch must be sufficient to maintain a head clearance of 2000mm, as detailed in Building Regulations Part K.
3) Bespoke requirements - To ensure all the criteria are successfully met, you should also consider whether a custom made roof access hatch should be chosen to ensure each of these areas is adequately fulfilled.
This includes options such as Bilco UK’s SKY Flatglass, which functions as both a Roof Access Hatch or a Smoke Ventilator, and is supplied with a clear, translucent lid to enable natural daylight into specific areas of the building, without impeding the functionality and accessibility of the hatch.
Increased access opening sizes or double leaf configurations should also be explored where access is required for larger items of equipment or tools. Motorised options also allow the individual to safely maintain contact with the ladder when entering or exiting the hatch. All installations should be subject to individual Risk Assessments.

POWERING UP MORE SUSTAINABLE, HEALTHIER OUTDOOR PUBLIC SPACES
Many of the UK’s town and city centres are being redefined to ensure they fit more closely with today’s urban lifestyles and the expectations of tourists. The changing retail landscape, driven by the growth of online shopping, more people working from home and an increasing number of people choosing to live in city centres, means that previous models for the design of streetscapes, public parks, plazas and other pedestrianised spaces are needing to undergo significant change. But it is not just reaction to social change that is at the heart of redesigns – sustainability and a growing movement to capitalise on the health benefits of being outdoors, in whatever form that takes, are also part of this fresh thinking to redesign our public spaces.
There is extensive evidence to show that providing safe, secure and attractive outdoor spaces is important to help people be more active and maintain and extend social interaction to benefit their mental health. Flood prevention and ensuring that water is managed efficiently in urban areas is becoming increasingly important due to climate change. Hence, SuDS (sustainable urban drainage systems) are being integrated and there is an increased use of planters in spaces that were previously dominated by tarmac, pavers and concrete, encouraging biodiversity in the process.
But there is also another important consideration in making these new outdoor public spaces as popular and versatile as possible to maximise their potential – access to on-demand power sockets.

ACornish brewery has moved into renovated premises that give visitors a whole new experience of watching the creation of their favourite beers with Crittall Windows playing a crucial role in the new concept.
Verdant Brewery took over a rundown warehouse on a Penryn industrial estate and, in addition to installing the brewing vats, created 400 sq. metres for staff offices and a space for public use, dubbed the Taproom.
The new interior was created around a steelframed installation with Crittall Corporate W20 windows providing a light and contemporary area where visitors can have a beer and something to eat while enjoying views through to the working brewery, a paramount consideration of the client.
In addition, The Taproom provides a mezzanine balcony overlooking an area that can also be used for entertainment from a DJ or with live music. The design was produced by locallybased architects Zelah Studio.

WELSH SLATE HELPS A HISTORIC COUNTRY MANSION WITH A NEW LEASE OF LIFE
A country mansion that was once one of Britain's most at risk Grade II* listed buildings is enjoying a new lease of life, thanks in part to Welsh Slate. Cwt-y-Bugail Dark Blue Grey roofing slates from the leading UK manufacturer have been used over 1,000m2 of roof at Bank Hall in Bretherton, Lancashire, which has been converted into luxury residential accommodation and exhibition spaces.
The Welsh slates were specified for the £5.6 million renovation on a like-for-like basis by architect Miles Pearson as the existing Welsh slates had been on the roof, in diminishing courses (as was the build method of the time), since the building was remodelled in the early 1830s. "We chose the slate in
conjunction with the National Lottery Heritage Fund's team, who oversaw the project and felt a historic supplier was far more suitable than an overseas import," said Miles.
The five-year project now comprises ten apartments and two houses within the hall. In addition, the central four-storey Prospect Tower, which is a regionally significant architectural feature, now houses educational and exhibition spaces open to the public for two days a week. The public also have access to the outer gardens and walled garden..
Specialist sub-contractor RL Lovatt took nine months to bring the reroof to full term. Their team had to use 1F bitumen underlay and custom lead boxes to cater for the resident bat population. All abutments used lead soakers/flashings with stainless steel valleys and land valleys and special conservation roof windows.
Contracts manager Andy Wilson said: "This project was quite the challenge due to time scales, the weather and the overall complexity of a job of this magnitude. Working with true Welsh Slate made all the difference - they are more durable, look fantastic and overall are much better to work with compared to the foreign imports that are widely used elsewhere. Lovatt's were extremely happy with how this project turned out in the end."
Bank Hall had been vacant and decaying steadily since 1971 and was the first building to feature on BBC Two's "Restoration" TV series.
Its restoration, thanks to a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant of £2.2 million, was delivered by Chorley Borough Council in partnership with the owners Heritage Trust North West, developers Urban Splash and Next Big Thing Developments, who specialise in difficult conservation building projects in the North West of England. Glasgow’s latest redevelopment project, located on Langside Road, is built upon the former site of the city’s Victoria Infirmary and consists of a large housing development that includes 413 flats, offices and retail space.
The 3.75 hectare site, which is situated next to Queen’s Park on the south side of the city, forms an important part of the Battlefield area’s character, with the buildings’ exterior reflecting and complementing the surrounding heritage by using the city's traditional blonde coloured sandstone. As part of the construction process,
Bilco UK was commissioned to supply six ESW-50REM Smoke Vents, in addition to seven E-50TB Roof Access Hatches, to provide the highest standards of safety and efficiency, whilst being sympathetic to the project’s overall design. Smoke Vents were specified to provide essential ventilation in the event of a building fire. Featuring a linear actuator operating mechanism that opens the cover to 140 degrees within 60 seconds, the smoke vents ensure compliance with Building Regulations Approved Document B, BS9999 and EN12101-2.
The built-in wind deflector also provides protection against smoke being blown back into the vent in the event of a fire., whilst the newly-designed closedcell EPDM sponge gasket helps meet Building Regulation air leakage targets by providing a better seal of the cover to the curb. With the addition of a fixed vertical ladder, the smoke vents can also be used by maintenance engineers for roof access.

SCHÖCK EXPERTISE FOR SEMICIRCULAR BALCONY DETAILING
The Triptych Bankside development at 185 Park Street, in Southwark, adjacent to the Tate Modern and the Globe Theatre is nearing completion. This three tower, mixed-use development, will provide creative workspace in a tenstorey building sitting alongside two residential blocks.
These are fifteen and nineteen storeys respectively, offering 170 new luxury homes. The striking design by architects Squire & Partners features unusual semicircular balconies throughout to maximise amenity space and sweeping panoramic views.
The balcony specification is demanding though and the adaptable Schöck Isokorb T type SK is incorporated to meet the various challenges.
A complete system thermal break - The special demands of the Triptych Bankside semicircular balcony profiling required bespoke Isokorb T type SK units designed with specific postional load capacities, using built-in steel reinforcement. The T type SK is a complete system structural thermal break for concrete-to-steel connectivity.
At present, no other UK product for concrete-tosteel applications satisfies the necessary loadbearing requirements, or meets the current and future thermal performance required by building standards (Part L). The entire project is built very much with sustainability in mind and minimising any risk of thermal bridging at the balcony detailing is critical for a number of reasons.
Any local heat loss will result in more energy being required to maintain the internal temperature of the building. Also, low internal surface temperatures in the area of any thermal bridge can cause condensation and this in turn is likely to result in structural integrity problems. Mould growth too is a possible risk, which in a residential situation can cause asthma and allergies.

CUPACLAD PROVIDES THE NATURAL SOLUTION FOR NEW COASTAL HOME
CUPA PIZARRAS’ CUPACLAD 101 Logic was recently installed as part of a striking new-build project, located in Aberystwyth, Wales. The natural slate cladding was chosen because it could complement the coastal surroundings as well as provide outstanding resistance to the harsh weather conditions. The site was purchased by homeowners, David and Shirley Harries who looked to extend the pre-existing bungalow but after finding significant issues with its structure, opted instead to erect a new build on the same plot.
“We really wanted a home that utilised a range of materials to create a modern look as opposed to building a glass palace that could look too ostentatious in the rugged seafront location,” said David. The couple approached Arwyn George from George + Tomos Architects who put together a design, which included CUPA PIZARRAS’ natural slate cladding system, CUPACLAD 101.
“The CUPACLAD system allowed the new home to blend into the surrounding cliffs beautifully,” said Arwyn. “In addition, I had to consider the high winds that the project would be exposed to and select something that would have the appropriate durability.”
High quality natural slate is a very resistant material – its deterioration is unnoticeable to the human eye, meaning its colour does not change across its 100 year lifespan, even in the coldest environments.
Natural slate also has a permanent sheen, unlike other roofing materials which can decrease up to eight times superior. “We really loved the proposal,” the couple commented. “The slate would blend seamlessly with the local landscape – both the cliffs behind the property as well as some of the other houses in the area, which also utilise natural slate. What’s more, the material is sympathetic to its environment.”
CUPACLAD is constructed using specially selected slates, which are dark in colour, creating a bold and dramatic look, particularly when utilised alongside lighter materials such as glass, timber and render. CUPACLAD 101 Logic is made up of 40x20cm slates installed horizontally using fixing systems that are completely invisible once installed to avoid impacting the design.
As with the rest of the CUPACLAD 101 series, it is BBA certified, verifying that it has an incredibly low level of water absorption, test results show a value between 0.16 and 0.17%. This ensures that the material is not susceptible to frosting or hypothermal ageing.
Furthermore, the BBA certificate demonstrates the slate is very resistant to high winds, fire and impacts. Rhys Ben Wright from RBW Carpentry was then selected to install the
slate system. A process made easier, thanks to the quality of the slate, with pre-drilled holes and self-drilling fixings.
What’s more, natural slate has a number of environmental benefits. According to research carried out by the University of Glasgow, it produces a limited amount of atmospheric carbon (1KgCO2/metre2 over its lifetime) and has a low water and energy consumption rate. Furthermore, by sourcing natural slate from CUPA PIZARRAS, a carbon neutral company, David and Shirley’s cladding solution is verifiably sustainable.
Once the project was completed, David and Shirley were over the moon with their new home: “The cladding fits the landscape seamlessly, which is due to the properties of the slate, as well as Arwyn’s design. He was able to shape the building in such a way that it really fits with the outlines of the hilly surroundings.

SUREST SHINES DOWN BY THE RIVERSIDE
Located on the River Itchen, sits Chapel Riverside, where a new housing development started in 2017. There are six phases to include 457 new homes which will be built near the Ocean Cruise terminal. The project was approved by Southampton City Council and is now into the third phase comprising of 132 apartments, all with allocated parking and premium specifications that run alongside the Solent Sea Wall.
Southampton City Council wantred the whole walkway paved in the most economic, cost-effective, durable, and aesthetically pleasing product possible. SureSet was able to provide large resin bound sample panels with various colour options so they could view the paving against the Sea Wall, determine the best appearanceand discuss the benefits of the products, installation methods and advise on the suitability that the resin bound paving would offer to the walkways.
One of the seven key areas in this project was to re-shape the landscapes of the city. To achieve a consistent aesthetic across the phases of Chapel Riverside Developments, it was specified the same materials were to be used throughout. The colour chosen was 6mm Butterscotch a permeable resin bound paving material from our Natural Aggregate range, installed at an 18mm depth. This product
was laid to create a desirable waterfront, and due to the smooth nature of the compacted surface, it is suitable for moderate to high foot traffic and accessible pathways. The area was built above ground level for the apartments and accompanying landscapes to improve ground floor access and create new walkways around the buildings to ensure everyone can enjoy the views.
The 360m²resin bound paving installation was completed over two days, the asphalt and concrete areas were quality checked and dip tested prior to installation. A sleek stainless steel edging, supplied by Dural Ltd, was carefully secured to the areas. The SureSet paving looks clean and smooth and is low maintenance and permeable. Chapel Riverside has a mix of building types and has been transformed with a new public piazza with cafes, restaurants, and shops as well as spaces for retained and enhanced marine industry and activities.

HAURATON DRAINAGE SYSTEMS AT BONUS ARENA - HULL VENUE
Built on brown-field land located on the edge of the main shopping district in Hull and adjacent to Princes Quay, the Bonus Arena – Hull Venue and its associated multi storey car park were opened in August 2018. The £36 million development progresses the legacy of the social and economic impact generated by Hull’s 2017 UK City of Culture status.
The Arena, designed by AFL Architects, is a state-of-the-art music and events complex with a flexible capacity of up to 3,500 people. The facility can provide a venue for concerts or corporate conferences in an 800 seat auditorium.
A 2000m² adaptable space can be utilised for sporting events or exhibitions and trade shows. Surrounding the Bonus Arena is a public realm laid with grey stone paving and landscaped by re-form Landscape Architecture Limited with trees, lawns, flowerbeds and permanent stone seating.
An effective surface water drainage system was essential to ensure all weather access to the venue. 140 metres of Hauraton RECYFIX® PRO 100 channels with FIBRETEC® heel-safe gratings were
chosen for the job which blended well with the stone paving and would resist damage from applied grit rock salt in freezing weather. The material, PA-GF used to make the FIBRETEC® grating, was specially developed by Hauraton; the tough, UV resistant, fibre reinforced moulding offers high stability and huge strength for its weight. Complying with loading category Class C250 (BSEN 1433) the grating can easily take the weight of commercial delivery vehicles.
The design is a real innovation as its non-corrosive material provides a visually appealing surface finish that retains its colour. The slots are super smooth, elliptical openings with the moulded bars having slightly raised triangular bosses along their outside edges.
As well as providing an elegant appearance, the feature ensures surface water is directed into the slots. The RECYFIX® channel component is made from 100% recycled PP. The PRO 100 model is factory fitted with the FIBRETEC® grating and only weighs 4.6kg, so the unit was easy to handle and quickly installed on site. www.drainage-projects.co.uk

Building membrane specialists, ITP Ltd, secured a specification at one of London’s most iconic new developments with the supply of the awardwinning Safe One breather membrane for Lucent W1. A £250m project which features the city’s famous Piccadilly Lights at its core, Lucent W1 comprises 110,000 sq ft of offices, 30,000 sq ft of retail space and 3,000 sq ft residential space including 20 roof terraces.
The development has been described as ‘an urban oasis in the centre of London’ with expansive green zones and flexible workspaces designed to foster a strong sense of community. Lucent W1 will revive and transform One Sherwood Street – the space behind the Lights – into a new six-storey building designed by architect Fletcher Priest. Construction is being overseen by principal contractor Wates, for developer Landsec.
Safe One was supplied via leading specialist distributor, SIG. The product will protect the longterm condition of the building envelope with a W1 rating for water tightness to prevent rain ingress and high water vapour permeability to control and release condensation from the building’s interior. Its advanced membrane also has a Euroclass A2,s1-d0 fire safety rating, waterproofing of 7000mm and

Health and beauty retailer Boots UK is well known for offering beauty products to enhance the stylish good looks of its customers, so the entrance to their brand new store in Kensington High Street in London, just had to step up to the mark. The busy store needed an entrance to complement its glass and bronze-anodised façade and GEZE UK had just the answer – the UFO NT. The UFO NT is an underfloor operator that is completely hidden from view, so perfect when installed with glass doors.
Extremely quiet in operation and complying with the demands of the Equality Act and BS EN 8300 ensuring access for all, the UFO NT can be used on any type of doors – glass, metal or wood, and can operate doors with leaf widths up to 1250mm on external doors and 1600mm on internal doors and up to 125kg in weight. GEZE UK worked with façade solutions specialists Colorminium to design and install double doors with two UFO NT automatic operators to the store entrance.
The Boots store is part of a mixed use building on the corner of High Street and Wrights Lane, the 1970’s building was remodelled and extended, to completely transform it and includes office space, a new retail arcade and connection to the London Underground. LANDMARK LEWISHAM PROJECT USING A1 MAGPLY FOR FIREPROOF PATTRESS INSERTS
A significant new high-rise residential project in the London Borough of Lewisham is being built to provide high quality social housing, with the design of the structure prioritising the use of noncombustible materials: including the choice of A1 rated Magply boards for pattresses within the external walls.
The development at Creekside in Deptford is being built to create a total of 56 one, two and three bedroom apartments, including three specially equipped units on the lower levels of one block for those with mobility issues. Within all of the high specification homes, pattress blocks cut from 18mm sheets of Magply boards are being fitted to the reinforced concrete structure’s infill of heavy gauge steel studs.
The pattresses are being positioned to support kitchen cupboards and bathroom units as well as radiators throughout the eight and 10 storey buildings. Independently certified to offer a range of performance benefits. Magply MOS boards present a fire-safe and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional plywood or OSB products which normally only offer a Euroclass D or E rating. Importantly the pull-out strength for 18mm Magply is in the range 3.45-4.00 Kn/m2. The different thicknesses of panel are also widely used as a substrate board for the direct application of proprietary render systems, as well as for flooring and flat or pitched roof build-ups. www.magply.co.uk
MAPEI ULTRATOP LOFT COMPLEMENTS VICTORIAN HOUSE IN BALHAM
Warwick-based surface design specialist – BaSE (www. baselifestyle.co.uk) - has completed a stunning ‘trowel effect’ floor installation using Mapei’s Ultratop Loft. The installation forms part of a kitchen renovation project within the basement of a period property in Balham, South London. Home of interior designer Charlie Nunn and husband, Richard, the large Victorian property has an eclectic style owing to the owner’s creative nature, with colours and artwork adorning the walls. As well as providing a city base for Charlie and her family, the home is used as a location for TV shows and photoshoots and has recently featured in Amazon Prime adverts.
BaSE’s use of Ultratop Loft spans the 50m2 extended kitchen, providing a striking contrast to the red gloss kitchen cabinets and satin wall finish. Ultratop Loft was trowel applied under the existing units and around the cabinet legs; it was applied with a Nuvolato (cloudy) texture in a warm grey called Venezia. The micro-cement based finish replaced a seamless resin floor which had faded in sunlight. A rapid-drying, micro-cement based system, Mapei Ultratop Loft is built up in layers made up of special primers, cementitious layers and hard wearing sealers.
The two cementitious layers - coarse grained Loft F and finer grained Loft W – are mixed with water and colourings to create a trowelable cementitious paste which is then applied in layers up to 2mm thick. Ultratop Loft is part of Mapei’s fast-track range and, in the correct conditions, the surface sets to foot traffic within three hours. STO INSULATION AND RENDER
SYSTEM MAKES ITS MARK ON THE BOURNEMOUTH SKYLINE
One of the tallest new buildings recently added to the Bournemouth skyline has been completed with a combination of external wall insulation and render products supplied by Sto. The company’s StoTherm Mineral M system, with Sto-Rotofix Plus mechanical fixings and StoSilco exterior render were all used on the new Skyline student accommodation building, which achieved a BREEAM ’Very Good’ rating.
StoTherm Mineral is a highly durable external wall insulation system which uses mineralfibre boards that provide outstanding thermal performance and unrivalled fire protection. The dense nature of the materials involved also provided a considerable degree of sound insulation for this student accommodation building, while the efficient single-leaf construction and external location of the system allowed internal space to be maximized.
After a Sto cement-free reinforcement layer had been applied, the insulation system was completed with the application of the company’s StoSilco silicone resin render. This provides the finished surfaces with a highly water-repellent surface that is ideal for buildings such as this where a coastal location may subject them to unusually harsh weather conditions. With excellent CO2 and water-vapour permeability this render allows moisture transfer to occur at a high rate, enabling the wall to breathe and encouraging the evaporation process.
The StoSilco render is available in an extended range of 764 colours from the StoColor System, and this provided extra benefits for this particular project. A dark grey RAL 7016 colour was used for the render between the windows and across the top two floors, and this was then overcoated with StoColor X-Black façade paint. A contrasting RAL 31437 cream colour was used in other areas. www.sto.co.uk
