OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME
GLENELG ENDORSES 2016-17 BUDGET
It was an opportunity of a lifetime and six Mount Gambier based and one Millicent based real estate agent were able to enjoy tapping into the best minds in the industry at AREC 2016 – the leading real estate event in Australia. Held on the Gold Coast at the end of May, the annual professional development opportunity gives agents access to some of the greatest minds, not just in real estate, but across other facets of life, inspiring and teaching over a two day period. AREC has been going for almost two decades and the 2016 event saw more than 4000 agents attending to hear words of wisdom from 35 keynote speakers. Malseed’s Real Estate agents Alistair Coonan, Kirby Vassallo, Craig Maria, Jason Malseed and Fiona Telfer, were joined by Ray White agents Tahlia Gabrielli and Sarah Barney at the event and earned the extra bonus of sitting at the table of leading New York real estate guru Fredrik Eklund, who was one of the major drawcards to AREC 2016. The local group won the honour of sharing the table with one of real estate’s greatest minds after winning a social media competition. Fredrik Eklund, the energetic, high-kicking, top broker at Douglas Elliman has secured over three billion dollars in closed residential sales. Glenelg Shire Council last week endorsed its 201617 budget which features one of the lowest overall rate increases in Victoria at 1.06 per cent. Mayor Cr Max Oberlander (pictured) said the $50.5 million budget included a $20.6 million extensive works program and $8.2 million investment in local road projects. A further $14.6 million has been allocated for new and upgraded assets across the shire in addition to $6 million for land fill upgrades, $1.5 million for the replacement of the old town jetty, and $1.6 million for parks, open space and streetscape improvements. Fees and charges have also been kept to a minimum with a 2.5 per cent increase endorsed, as per State Government recommendations and consistent with CPI. A total of three submissions were received on the draft budget, which was on public exhibition for 28 days. “Council is pleased to deliver another low rate rise, which is considerably under the State Government rate capping recommendation of 2.5 per cent,” Cr Oberlander said. “Our track record of strong financial management provides our ratepayers
2014 and star of hit reality TV show “Million Dollar Listings New York”, he set record sales in 28 buildings in Manhattan last year alone and is often spotted showing apartments to top name celebrities, including Sarah Jessica Parker and Jennifer Lopez. His active listings amount to $540,000,000 and while that is a far cry from selling houses in the Limestone Coast, there were plenty of lessons to be learned. “It was a chance to hear how real estate is changing and eventually those changes will happen here,” Alistair Coonan said. “It was an information packed two days.” South Australia’s top agent Phil Harris, former Aussie cricket captain Michael Clarke and John McGrath joined Fredrik Eklund. “For us to get exposure to people like that was amazing,” Alistair said. “There was a lot said about being personally healthy and getting that work-life balance right and
how that can impact positively on your professional life.” Alistair said to have the opportunity to sit at a table with Fredrik Eklund for three hours was life changing and it was great to see how humble and grounded the hugely successful agent was. “Jason (Malseed) has always been the kind of person that encourages professional development and attending events like this and it was such a great opportunity,” Alistair said. “The industry keeps changing and we have to keep learning. We are always aiming to give six star service to our clients and get the best possible result for them.” Above - Alistair Coonan; Kirby Vassallo; Sarah Barney & Tahlia Gabrielle with New York real estate icon Frederik Eklund (seated). with these continued low increases, at a time when we know every cent counts in a household budget. “We are proud to deliver significant investment in our local roads, assets and infrastructure to ensure our community receives value for money and access to a wide range of services.” For every $100 spent on council services Glenelg Shire Council will deliver $23.70 in its Capital Works program, $7.80 on Community Facilities and Library Services and $10.30 on Waste Management and Recycling. Cr Oberlander said a new fact sheet, illustrating the council investment for the new financial year would be included with rate notices, which are due to be issued in late August.
