A re You Lonesome Tonight? by Alastair Jones Here are some of the local haunting places where the light witty chat from bright happy faces cuts the nocturnal mists. (Plus some less frivolous dives where you just might get it on). French’s wine bar in Oxford St, Darlinghurst is open till 10 p.m. six nights a week arid pro vides jazz and blues to fill the holes in your patter as you’re chatting up Rosie. (Blue Spirit is a pretty cool band). Prices are the average wine bar hit (about 10 cents a glass more than pubs). Similarly Sorehs in Crown St, Surry Hills is not a bad spot for meeting good-time heads, and you can get a steak out the back. Open till

about 1 a.m. and oc casionally they provide a touch of jazz. Most suburbs have at least one wine bar, usually with recent music on cassette and barmaids that are at best spunky and at least civil. The Rocks Push down by Circular Quay usually has some good live jazz to mix with the plonk. A n yw i ne bar open after 10 p.m. is required (by the licensing laws) to force food down your throat, but unless they have aspirations towards trendiness, you’ll find a spaghetti on the menu for about 75 cents. The Upper Crust wine bar in Military Road, Mosman,' was busted recently for failing to force food upon a gentleman of
conspicuously casual dress so they’ll have to take a more persuasive line in future. The Upper Crust has barmaids that are real friendly and the sailors from the Balmoral Naval Base (just one short mile away) give the place a healthy row diness. The Elizabeth Folk Club on Friday and Saturday nights on the first floor of the pub opposite the Hyde Park War Memorial. Costs 70 or 80 cents, grog at normal pub prices and you’ll hear the best folk around. Wed nesday night at the Eliz. is Irish night which heralds a diet of archaic shanties, obscure poems of The Personal Search and general bewilder ment unless you’re into
the tangent; you can still get pissed though. Then there’s PACT at the YMCA building (opp. Hyde Park in Oxford St.) which has good folk for a buck on Saturday nights (till 11 p.m.) and audi tion night on Fridays which is a bit more dicey. Sat. night in the basement of the Royal George Hotel on the corner of King and Sussex Sts, you can listen, to folk music (sometimes jazz) as you sip the booze you bought up stairs. Friendly atmos phere. The Boar’s Head is a folk dive somewhere in Sussex Street. Then there’s the pubs'. Like the Windsor Castle in Elizabeth St, Paddo which has a loose form of jazz on Thursday and Friday nights and Satur day arvo.
