In 1974, the Rock Royer/Mac Rivera Award was established to honor the graduating senior student-athlete at Liberty University who best exemplifies the character and drive epitomized in the lives of these great Christian men. Rock Royer was Liberty’s first football coach in 1973. Mac Rivera was a member of Liberty’s basketball team from 1972-74. Both Royer and Rivera died tragically at a young age. This award encompasses more than just athletic ability. It recognizes the graduating student-athlete who has maintained an exemplary testimony on the playing field, in the classroom, and among the student body. The 2020 recipient of this award was women’s swimming & diving standout Hannah Baker. A two-time team captain, Baker helped the Lady Flames capture back-to-back CCSA titles in 2019 and 2020. She swam on nine CCSA-champion relay teams and was a five-time CCSA individual podium finisher. Her 1:46.55 leadoff leg of Liberty’s CCSA and conference-meet record 7:10.73 800 free relay in 2018 remains a program record for 200 freestyle. Baker is the third swimmer all-time at Liberty to go 12-for-12 at CCSA Championships, qualifying for A Finals in all 12 individual events she entered at conference meets over

the last four years. She is the first swimmer in program history to earn top-three CCSA finishes in the 50 free, 100 free, and 200 free during her career. During her time at Liberty, the Lady Flames posted a 49-7 dual-meet record, the winningest four-year dual-meet record in program history. A native of Fairfax, Va., who maintained a 3.95 GPA, Baker graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She was named a 2018 CSCAA Scholar All-America honorable mention recipient. During her time at Liberty, she helped the swimming & diving team achieve national acclaim, as the team’s 3.79 GPA in Fall 2018 was the highest of any NCAA swimming & diving team in the nation. Outside of the pool and classroom, Baker has spent many hours helping with community service projects. During her time at Liberty, she aided with the Dollar Makes a Difference campaign, Trick or Treat so Others Can Eat, Share the Warmth, Serve Lynchburg, R.S. Payne School Field Day, Human Kind 5K and Fun Run, Football Clean-up, Liberty Athletics Golf Outing, and Freedom 4/24 5K.

LIBERTY UNIVERSITY FALL ENROLLMENT TOPS GROWTH AMONG VIRGINIA COLLEGES DESPITE PREDICTIONS

The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia recently released a report showing that Liberty University did not follow analysts’ predictions that colleges would see a dip in numbers due to the COVID-19 pandemic to start the school year. Liberty, in fact, experienced an estimated 10.5% increase in total enrollment over last fall — the highest growth estimated among all Virginia colleges.

While Liberty has experienced growth, SCHEV reported that overall enrollment at Virginia’s public and private nonprofit institutions this fall declined by 1.3%.

The report estimated that new first-time student enrollment at the state’s four-year, private nonprofit institutions increased by .5%, and total undergraduate enrollment increased 3.4%, all due to gains by Liberty. “All of this growth is attributed to Liberty University, both in new students and overall undergraduate enrollment,” the report stated.

It also stated a rise in graduate and firstprofessional enrollment from last fall, “primarily because of significant increases in graduate enrollment at Liberty University by non-Virginian students.” This week, Liberty University also reported a .3% increase for the percentage (the “mix”) of its on-campus minority population — now at 20.6% — following an 8.2% increase in new domestic minority incoming freshmen in that program from Fall 2019.

“We started another year off strong here at Liberty University, and we are especially grateful that the early predictions for colleges across the country did not hold true for us,” said President Jerry Prevo. “This shows that students now, more than ever, are seeking a distinctly Christian education from a world-class university — and Liberty is at the top of the list.”

Liberty hit an enrollment milestone over the summer for its classes offered online, reaching 50,000 new students. Overall, 108,000 students are pursuing degrees with online classes through Liberty, which remains a top choice for adults earning their degrees and advancing their careers around the globe.

The fall semester officially started on Aug. 24 on campus, offering in-person instruction for all classes. Before classes resumed, Liberty released its full Campus Operating Plan that contained all health and safety regulations related to the COVID-19 pandemic and has continually advanced its efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19. The SCHEV reviewed the plan and found it to be in compliance with the required components of the Higher Education Reopening Guidance, developed in consultation with the Virginia Department of Health.

FLAMES FEATURE: ASHLEY DYKEMA

Ashley Dykema began playing field hockey at an early age, fell in love with the sport and never looked back.

“As soon as I started playing, you could tell that I had a skill for it.” Dykema said. “That was the beginning of the end.”

Dykema, now a senior, was drawn to the Liberty field hockey program because of the team’s unique culture. Since her first day on campus, Dykema has been greatly impacted by the coaching staff as well as her fellow teammates.

“The culture of the team is so unique and different. This program has pushed me past my comfort zone, in a good way,” Dykema raved. “If you ask the coaches, especially Coach Parsley-Blocker from freshman year to now, I am a completely different person. I think that is a testament to the intensity and the demands of this team. They are constantly pushing you to be your best.”

Since Ashley arrived at Liberty, she has been joined by two familiar faces. Her sister, Bethany, joined the field hockey team as a freshman for the 2019 season, and in the spring she was joined by her youngest sister, Emily. The Dykema sisters are the second trio of sisters to play for the Liberty field hockey team at the same time, joining the Barr sisters. Natalie (201215), Bethany (2013-16) and Serena (2013-16) Barr competed for the Lady Flames from 2012-16.

“When I committed to Liberty, in my wildest dreams I would not have thought that both of my sisters would have played with me. When we were in high school and played club together, it was so different. When you come to college the demands are different, the workload is different, and the expectations are different,” Dykema stated. “It has been so cool to see them each navigate the offseason and the challenges that have come along. It has bonded our relationship in a new way because we are at a Division I program, and we are facing the same challenges together.” This offseason has provided many unique challenges for the Liberty field hockey team, as the season, typically played in the fall, was postponed to the spring. Despite the unusual circumstances, the Lady Flames have been committed to remembering their purpose. “One big thing that we talk about a lot is remembering our ‘why.’ We want to remind ourselves why we are out there and what we are pursuing,” Dykema said. “It prevents us from getting caught in the day-to-day emotions. At the same time, we are pursuing glory for God while having fun and embracing the gifts that He has given us.”

The Lady Flames have found unique ways to combat the irregularity that they are experiencing while continuing to bond as a team.

“Our scrimmages have really helped. It is not really game day, but it is a break from the normal practice schedule,” Dykema stated. “We do a lot of off-thefield activities together where we will hang out or go get dinner or coffee away from the practice environment, which allows us to grow as a team.”

The 2019 Longstreth/NFHCA All-America second team honoree and the Lady Flames are grateful that they are even able to practice right now, as some of their rivals have not been afforded the same opportunities this fall. They hope to leverage the time that they have together this fall into a BIG EAST championship and a berth into the NCAA Tournament in the spring.

“It is going to be very unusual, but I am very excited. Because of the situation that we have been put in, we are very different from the teams that I have played with before,” Dykema said. “I am excited to see where we can go. Many teams in the BIG EAST are not able to practice right now, or they are only able to do so in a very limited capacity. It is going to be a really fun

SARGEANT ADDED TO RIMINGTON TROPHY WATCH LIST

Center Thomas Sargeant, who recently started his 41st career game for the Flames at Syracuse, is drawing national attention for his consistent play on the offensive line.

On Oct. 14, Sargeant was one of several FBS players added to the Rimington Trophy Watch list, an award presented annually to the most outstanding center in NCAA Division I College Football.

Since its inception, the 17-year old award has raised over $4.45 million for the Boomer Esiason Foundation, which is committed to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis. Sargeant, a native of Mechanicsville, Va., has started every game at center for the Flames since 2017. After spending his first year redshirting, the center started as a walk-on the next year and has started every game since. The offensive lineman earned a scholarship from Liberty following his redshirt freshman season in December of 2017.

Sargeant has been a fixture on the Liberty offensive line through the Flames’ FBS reclassification process, including Liberty’s victory over Georgia Southern in the FBC Mortgage Cure Bowl to cap off the Flames’ first full year at the FBS level last December.

The former walk-on anchored an offensive line that allowed quarterback Stephen Calvert to finish his career (2016-19) as Liberty’s all-time leader in career passing yards (12,025) and touchdowns (93).

Liberty’s offensive line allowed Calvert to post the longest streak in the country among FBS quarterbacks by completing 295 passing attempts without an interception in 2019. The Flames, who posted an 8-5 record in 2019, finished the year ranked No. 21 nationally in passing yards per game (288.9) and No. 32 in total offensive yards per game (439.4). FLAMES FEATURE The Rimington Trophy Committee adjusted its procedures with consideration to the COVID-19 pandemic, choosing to hold its 2020 watch list until play began. The plan was implemented across all Division I conferences.

This year, the committee accepted nominations from all eligible Division I programs with the goal of highlighting as many collegiate centers as possible and showing the outstanding commitment of the nominated student-athletes.

Dave Rimington, the award’s namesake, was a consensus first-team All-America center at the University of Nebraska in 1981 and 1982, during which time he became the John Outland Trophy’s only two-time winner as the nation’s finest college interior lineman.
