ABOUT
In 1974, the Rock Royer/Mac Rivera Award was established to honor the graduating senior student-athlete at Liberty University who best exemplifies the character and drive epitomized in the lives of these great Christian men. Rock Royer was Liberty’s first football coach in 1973. Mac Rivera was a member of Liberty’s basketball team from 1972-74. Both Royer and Rivera died tragically at a young age. This award encompasses more than just athletic ability. It recognizes the graduating student-athlete who has maintained an exemplary testimony on the playing field, in the classroom, and among the student body. The 2020 recipient of this award was women’s swimming & diving standout Hannah Baker. A two-time team captain, Baker helped the Lady Flames capture back-to-back CCSA titles in 2019 and 2020. She swam on nine CCSA-champion relay teams and was a five-time CCSA individual podium finisher. Her 1:46.55 leadoff leg of Liberty’s CCSA and conference-meet record 7:10.73 800 free relay in 2018 remains a program record for 200 freestyle. Baker is the third swimmer all-time at Liberty to go 12-for-12 at CCSA Championships, qualifying for A Finals in all 12 individual events she entered at conference meets over

the last four years. She is the first swimmer in program history to earn top-three CCSA finishes in the 50 free, 100 free, and 200 free during her career. During her time at Liberty, the Lady Flames posted a 49-7 dual-meet record, the winningest four-year dual-meet record in program history. A native of Fairfax, Va., who maintained a 3.95 GPA, Baker graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She was named a 2018 CSCAA Scholar All-America honorable mention recipient. During her time at Liberty, she helped the swimming & diving team achieve national acclaim, as the team’s 3.79 GPA in Fall 2018 was the highest of any NCAA swimming & diving team in the nation. Outside of the pool and classroom, Baker has spent many hours helping with community service projects. During her time at Liberty, she aided with the Dollar Makes a Difference campaign, Trick or Treat so Others Can Eat, Share the Warmth, Serve Lynchburg, R.S. Payne School Field Day, Human Kind 5K and Fun Run, Football Clean-up, Liberty Athletics Golf Outing, and Freedom 4/24 5K.

OVER 2,200 LIBERTY UNIVERSITY STUDENTS, STAFF JOIN FRANKLIN GRAHAM AT PRAYER MARCH IN D.C
In the heart of Washington, D.C., more than 2,200 Liberty University students and staff walked alongside Franklin Graham, Liberty President Jerry Prevo and his wife, Carol, and thousands more across the National Mall, last Saturday — not as a protest or demonstration, but to pray in unity for God’s healing in America’s present and future.
The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA), of which Graham is the president and CEO, hosted the Washington Prayer March 2020, which began at the Lincoln Memorial and ended in front of the Capitol Building.
Graham had invited Liberty students to join him in D.C. during his message at Convocation on Sept. 16 in Williams Stadium, encouraging them to walk alongside thousands of fellow believers in a time of prayer for the soul of the nation.
The immediate response from students was astounding.
“Originally, we thought it was audacious to have 250 or even 500 students, but we were pleasantly surprised that, by the time we were finished with the Convocation (with Graham), over 1,100 students had signed up to be a part of it,” said David Nasser, who leads Liberty’s Office of Spiritual Development, which organized the trip. “Our campus has always been a campus full of students who believe in the power of prayer.”
44 buses left campus at 6:30 a.m. en route to D.C., carrying students and staff with hearts to see God move mightily in our country. As the next generation, the students felt the need to join with fellow believers and ask God for positive change.
Junior Justin Holdstock was able to make the trip with several of his friends. He said the show of unity from Liberty in Washington was impressive.
“I believe that prayer changes things and that prayer makes an impact and influence, so I wanted to take this opportunity to come up here and petition for our nation,” he said. “I think it’s awesome that we get to walk through our nation’s capital with hundreds of thousands of people, all praying. It’s an amazing representation of what Liberty stands for; it shows that we’re not just talk as a university and that we believe what we preach at our school.” Standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, Graham welcomed the tens of thousands who had filled the steps surrounding the stage, the pavement along the Reflecting Pool, and the paths as far back as the World War II Memorial.
Immediately following Graham’s opening statements, to the crowd’s surprise, Vice President of the United States Mike Pence and Second Lady Karen Pence were ushered up the steps to the stage to greet and address the crowd. Pence thanked the march participants for their continued prayers for him, President Donald Trump, and the men and women who serve our nation in the military, in the government, and as first responders.
Participants were given a suggested focus to pray for at each of the seven landmarks along the 1.8-mile route, including prayer for the country’s societal issues regarding race and religion, wisdom for politicians, and safety for military members and first responders.
Liberty provided each student and staff member with breakfast and lunch, a free T-shirt and rain jacket, and a health kit containing a mask, hand sanitizer, and water.

In his final semester at Liberty, senior Cole McQuaid said he had never been to a march or demonstration before Saturday, explaining that he chose to attend because of the Christ-centered mission of the event in contrast to the common theme of other marches held in Washington.

“It’s an important event because we can demonstrate our faith and publicly pray for our nation; it’s something we’re allowed to do in this country, and doing it in a massive group like this is a good opportunity to show people who Jesus is when it’s peaceful and loving,” McQuaid said. “We’re here to pray, and I think that’s the most important thing; we’re all on one page, on one front.” by Ryan Klinker, Liberty University Office of Communications & Public Engagement
FLAMES FEATURE: MELODY JAYROE
As soon as she arrived on campus, Melody Jayroe was thrown into a major role as the starting goalkeeper for the Lady Flames soccer team. However, despite the demands that the position brought, she embraced the opportunity she had been given and began to thrive.
“I wasn’t expecting that,” the Texas native recalled. “In high school, I didn’t get a whole lot of playing time. Being thrown into a starting position, I had to embrace the opportunity that the Lord had given me.”
Jayroe quickly adjusted to the pace of the college game and was very successful during her freshman year, posting eight shutouts and a 0.84 goals against average, which was good enough for fourth all-time in program history. With those numbers, she earned a place on the Big South All-Freshman team.
Its Christian mission and thriving nursing program drew Jayroe to Liberty, but it was the soccer program that caught her interest the most, and she felt it was a perfect fit.
“On the field, I’ve been surrounded by great coaches who have helped me grow so much more than I thought I could have been. Off the field, I feel that I have grown so much more spiritually, personally and as a friend. We are such a family,” the senior noted. “This program pushes you not just to be a great soccer player but to be someone who is well-rounded.”
As the starting goalkeeper, Jayroe had to become a team leader quickly and be someone that others looked to as an example. The team’s motto for the last few years has been “All In.” Jayroe says she and the rest of the Lady Flames are committed to giving everything they have whether that is in practice, games, school, or any other arena.
“On the field, you’re going in for every tackle and you’re going for every header. As a goalkeeper, I’m going to go for every single ball, even if someone’s foot is right by my face. But, it applies off the field also,” Jayroe stated. “In school, you’re going to get your best grade on your toughest test. It applies to relationships, family members, and in your faith.”
The spiritual and relational development that she has experienced off of the field, along with her athletic achievement on the field, culminated with her being crowned the ASUN Goalkeeper of the Year following the 2019 season.
“I wasn’t thinking about trying to get any records or awards. While I had some good games here and there, there have been so many times where I made a mistake and Cora Duininck, Kayleigh Kardos, or someone else backed me up,” Jayroe said. “Even though it is Goalkeeper of the Year, the award really goes to the whole back line.”
In August, the ASUN Conference announced that all fall championships were postponed due to the coronavirus. While the pandemic has shifted the soccer season to the spring, Jayroe and the Lady Flames are taking each day in stride and supporting each other through the challenges.

“Each sport is being pulled out of their normal routine. We are all in the same position, so it is easier to encourage one another. If one of my teammates is feeling down, I know why they are feeling down and I can pick them back up,” Jayroe said. “When the Lord takes your priorities away from you, it opens your eyes to see what He wants us to have as our priorities. Taking away soccer and school, I have been able to look to Him so much more.”
Despite the delay, Jayroe and her teammates eagerly look forward to the impending season in whatever form it will take. The Lady Flames will have their sights set on competing for an ASUN championship.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
JEFFERSON AND LIBERTY SAAC OUTLINE PLANS FOR 2020-21 SCHOOL YEAR

In early August, the Liberty Athletics Department welcomed Butch Johnson as its new Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Engagement and Development. Jefferson, a former student-athlete at the University of Virginia and later an athletics academic coordinator for the Cavaliers, will handle the community engagement and development initiatives for Liberty’s 20 NCAA Division I athletics programs and 550-plus student-athletes. “I’m here to serve our student-athletes and athletic department,” said Jefferson. “Community service and outreach is something I’ve always been really passionate about my entire life.” Jefferson will also collaborate with a variety of groups on the Liberty campus and throughout the greater Lynchburg community to develop and implement programs to enhance the Flames’ studentathlete experience. As part of his position, Jefferson hopes to build programs that emphasize community outreach and professional character, leadership, and career development. “What I’m able to bring to the table is not only something I’m passionate about but something that I’ve lived. Being able to relate to the student-athletes and know what type of community service events and opportunities they might want to participate in, and offering a variety of them, is a win-win for everybody,” Jefferson stated. Jefferson brings a variety of experiences to his position. During his time as an athlete at Virginia, he was part of Virginia’s Student-Athlete Mentor program, was a Captain’s Council Executive Board member, and was one of two Virginia representatives on the ACC’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). FLAMES FEATURE He later returned to his alma mater in 2007 and spent six years as an Athletics Academic Coordinator with Virginia’s football program (2007-13). During the span, he served on the Athletics Diversity Committee and Athletics Mentor Group and was an executive member of the University of Virginia General Faculty Council. Jefferson graduated from Virginia in 2002 with a degree in sociology. He earned a master’s degree in Leadership, Foundations & Policy from Virginia in 2003. An active member of Family Life Church in Lynchburg, Va., he is currently involved in its Membership Services Ministry. He has also held various other roles with the church, serving as Director of Singles Ministry, Director of Brotherhood Ministry, and on the God’s Mighty Men Leadership staff. Jefferson’s passion about issues related to diversity adds a different perspective. “My goal is to bring different ideas and perspectives and focus on what we are strong at. We are here to build Champions for Christ. If we focus on the Great Commandment, ‘love your God with all your heart, mind, body, soul, spirit, and love your neighbor as yourself,’ we’ll find ourselves in a better, more positive situation.” With unique challenges presented by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Jefferson and Liberty’s StudentAthlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) held a retreat on Sept. 13 at Camp Hydaway to outline a plan for community outreach opportunities for Liberty student-athletes for the 2020-21 academic year. “The plan going in to the retreat was to provide team building opportunities and establish a vision of what the student-athletes wanted SAAC to look like during 2020-21,” Jefferson noted. The attendees split into focus groups to decide what SAAC’s vision should look like for the 2020-21 school year. With Jefferson’s assistance, the leadership group established community service, career/professional development, financial literacy, mental health, social equality, and social media as the primary focal points for the academic year and established subcommittees for each. Some of the events organized by group for this fall include a Virtual Voter Education Initiative in conjunction with Florida State, a Mental Health Awareness event in conjunction with College Football Mental Health Awareness Week, participation in the NCAA Department of Inclusion diversity and inclusion social media campaign, and a financial literacy event at the School of Business. In addition, SAAC has started a social media campaign titled “#ListenLearnLove” that is scheduled to begin soon.
