or me 2020 has definitely been a year that will be remembered, and for all the wrong reasons. Many of us are looking forward to a more positive 2021! At the start of 2020 all eyes were firmly focused on Brexit, then this quickly turned towards the current pandemic with Brexit feeling like a fleeting whisper. As Covid-19 took a firm hold not only here in the UK, but on a global scale, there was a point where I for one couldn’t see any exit. However, there is now rays of hope as we are seeing the rollout of a vaccine, which hopefully will determine a much more positive 2021 in comparison to the one we’ve just experienced. On another positive note, I feel that our spirits as an industry haven’t been dampened, in fact, quite the opposite with everyone within our industry pulling together and showing support for one another. We’ve seen new stores open during the crisis, and some even opening a second store - proving that it can be achieved even in the face of diversity. Every hurdle faced by many has been met head on, from supply issues through to stores having to close their doors. Independent retailers have certainly proved their worth and stepped up to the mark when stores had to remain closed, with the majority ensuring websites were functional and social media was being fully utilised. Then when doors were able to swing open, appointment only became the new norm (and for many proved a total success) and where able, click and collect was activated. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again - what an amazing bunch you all are! What is evident though is that during these crazy times, we have clearly missed the opportunity to gather at events, such as Harrogate Int. Nursery Fair and Kind + Jugend to see new products, run through current ranges,
receive valuable product demonstrations and meet with like-minded people. I for one am hoping that these can resume next year. Although Zoom has been a lifeline for many, it’s just not the same as being able to be among the buzz of the show halls, have a chat and catch up with everyone, spot upcoming trends and more importantly see all the lovely new product launches ‘in the flesh’ that have taken place during the year. Of course, this year isn’t quite over yet - Brexit negotiations haven’t been finalised and so far a trade deal with the EU has still not been reached. All those who import or export must also now have a EORI number. From 1 January 2021 you will need a EORI number to move goods between Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) or the Isle of Man, and the EU. You may also need a separate EORI number if you move goods to or from Northern Ireland. To register for your EORI number simply visit www.gov.uk/eori, where you will find full information and how to register. This is a free service. Now to this issue - you will find our annual round-up of winners of the coveted Mother&Baby Awards. This year, like so many other events, Mother&Baby moved online to celebrate. The event was aired live on the 24th November and proved to be a huge success. You can read all about it by turning to page 18. Huge congratulations to all the winners! Remember, the award winning products will carry the M&B seal of approval - always a bonus when parents are shopping for products that carry an instantly recognised endorsement! Next we focus on car seats. We all know the importance of this category as a car seat is a legal
requirement. You can check out an array of seats that are available to order now by turning to page 36. Remember, if you are seeking invaluable advice that you can use in-store or pass onto your customers. check out the free literature supplied by the Baby Products Association. You will have also noticed that our cover hero this month is Maxi-Cosi. Their Home range is proving popular and now we introduce the latest addition to the range - Cassia - a stylish, soothing swing suitable from birth to 9kg. You will find further details by turning to page 16. Finally, myself, Christine and the Nursery Today team would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very festive (and safe) season full of smiles and happiness! Here’s to hopefully being able to see many of you in 2021 and let’s hope next year is the year of the predicted ‘baby boom’!’ Check out the winners of the coveted Mother&Baby 2021 Awards.

Have you got your EORI number? You need an EORI number to get or send deliveries that go into or out of the UK and anywhere else that includes the EU from 1st January 2021. For example, if you buy items from a supplier that may be an international brand with its warehouse possibly located in Belgium or you are buying bedding from a Spanish brand who ship directly to your shop in the UK you will need a EORI number. You may get orders on line from a consumer in Europe or the USA and to ship them you will need a EORI number. If you do not have an EORI, you may have increased costs and delays. For example, if HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) cannot clear your goods you may have to pay additional clearance and storage fees. So, apply today; it costs you nothing but will save you time, trouble, and a lot of needles costs. Even if you think you do not need one now, apply just get it as a precaution. It takes 5 to 10 minutes to apply. www.gov.uk/eori 8

Consumer insights:
FANFINDERS
Parenting trends we might see in 2021 FanFinders’ Chief Commercial Officer Adam Gillett considers what this year’s insights can tell us about potential trends for 2021.
Focus on sustainability
Sustainability will not be usurping cost, value or arguably brand name-power anytime soon when it comes to parents’ purchasing priorities, but it is making up ground. Product shortages, logistics challenges and the general uncertainty thrown up by both COVID-19 and the wider political climate, all mean sustainability will continue to have weight with consumers next year. Not only did last year’s Deloitte Global Millennial Survey find that over 40% of millennial parents in the US choose to purchase (or not purchase) from companies based on the company’s perceived impact and the sustainability of their products, but in our survey of over 5,000 parents in the UK and US (2020), sustainability ranked as the second most important factor when considering a purchase.
Home learning
One of the more notable impacts of the pandemic has been on schooling. The trend of virtual learning, even with the current reopening of schools, could leave
a lasting impression, especially with the increased availability of online resources and products to support parents. During lockdown, over 40% of the UK parents were choosing online resources including learning games, quizzes, tests, videos, as teaching aids. In addition to many parents juggling work from home with teaching, some also made the choice to home-school instead. With 88% of parents agreeing that ‘child development begins at birth’ and the vast majority (86%) stating they are interested in tracking developmental milestones, another possibility is that ‘learning from home’ will begin much earlier.
Food as part of healthy development Another area of growing interest is healthy baby and toddler nutrition. Everything from how their child eats in the early stages– almost 30% of Your Baby Club members would like to know more about the differences between baby-led and traditional weaning, to what they eat (87% want information about baby food and family meal recipes) is now under scrutiny. With more and more studies about the importance of monitoring sugar and sodium intake, and vegetable consumption from day one, next year could see a movement towards the ‘every bite counts’ mindset.
The resurgence of quality family time
The pandemic has shifted family dynamics in a big way. We’re spending more time together, having to find new things to do as a collective unit and this is ultimately changing perspectives on work/life balance. Not only have we seen more traditional activities receive a boost – over 50% of UK parents said they were playing games as a family to keep their kids occupied during lockdown – but the classic parenting picture of everyone sitting down together at the dinner table each day has become a reality for many.
“
Product shortages, logistics challenges and the general uncertainty thrown up by both COVID-19 and the wider political climate, all mean sustainability will continue to have weight with consumers next year.
Businesses are already responding to this shift, giving parents the flexibility to use their time more efficiently, and it’s safe to say we can expect this to extend further into the product space over the coming year.
Parent and mum-driven purchasing
Parent-driven purchasing has become an even larger factor during the pandemic. They are the ones generally shopping alone (both online or in shops), meaning less impulse purchases from their little ones grabbing things off the shelves. An example of this can be found with toys and games, where sets that encourage educational and hands-on play are popular as parents make considered purchases that offer more

T
his year, one of the most difficult the world has faced in decades, has proved once and for all that looking too far ahead in business can be a mistake. Since May, we’ve been focussed on helping our industry by sourcing real insights from what is an audience of over 5 million Your Baby Club members in the UK and US on everything from lockdown and travel, through to motoring, toys and early development. From our side, it was vital to share perspectives from the here and now to support both our partners and, through our monthly column, the readers of Nursery Today. While I’m not usually one for making predictions and we live in a climate that could turn full circle within a couple of weeks, this body of research does give us an opportunity to look ahead at what parenting trends could be relevant next year:
longevity. Our recent survey found that both expectant parents and those with young children consider educational and developmental potential the most important feature of a toy. Something that will not be changing in 2021 is mums’ buying power, at least according to our member survey. 84% said they are responsible for all household purchases, with over 90% handling cleaning/cooking and more than half (52%) taking charge of DIY and decoration. Not to mention 87% of mums were involved in the purchase decision of the family car. The events of 2020 will likely shape our lives for some years to come and you may have recognised some of these trends as predictions ahead of 2020 or even the year before. However, for strong business plans, working out what hasn’t changed in our market could be just as valuable as understanding what has.

e all know that sleep is an incredibly important part of both little one’s and parents’ lives. Establishing a good routine is paramount, and it’s often the sleeptime products involved that play a large role in creating a peaceful night’s sleep for everyone, so finding the right crib is essential. As babies grow and reach developmental milestones, parents are faced with having to invest in different sleeptime solutions, which can be costly and disruptive. Traditionally, many babies sleep in a Moses basket for the first few months, before transitioning to a cot at six months, then a toddler cot bed and finally a standard single bed. Over the past seven years, the Chicco Next2Me range has become a firm favourite amongst parents here in the UK, providing a safer way to keep baby close during the night without sharing the same bed. As well as being the most awarded crib range on the market, with over 30 industry awards, it is also the crib of choice for over two million parents and is continually asked for by name. The launch of the Chicco Next2Me – the original side-sleeping crib – was transformational, providing parents with a crib that they could use from birth, right up to six months. Over time, Artsana developed the range based on consumer feedback, from rocking functions to more easily adjustable side-panels. It was only a matter of time before the experts at Chicco’s Baby Research Centre turned to the latest request from consumers, a crib that not only offered side-sleeping until an extended age, but could also evolve into a cot and toddler
bed down the line. It’s following this feedback that we are excited to launch the latest addition to the family - the Chicco Next2Me Forever. The Chicco Next2Me Forever is the first evolutionary side-sleeping crib that can be used from birth through to four years, with three different configurations. As well as offering a side-sleeping crib that parents have come to know and love, the Chicco Next2Me Forever can be used for side-sleeping for longer, also be transformed into a standalone cot and then a toddler bed, from 18 months. Thanks to the new design with higher sides, the crib can be used in sidesleeping mode for longer. Not only does this allow parents to keep their little one closer to them during the night for longer, but it also enables parents to move little one into a standalone cot when they feel is suitable, rather than the point at which little one has outgrown their side-sleeper, which is often at six months. This extended cot also provides a familiar sleeptime environment for little one, and this conditioning to their surroundings creates the forum for undisturbed sleep when the time comes for them to move into their own room. The four swivelling wheels with brakes make it easy to move the Chicco Next2Me Forever around the home, out of parents’ bedroom and into little one’s room when the time is right. Another new revolutionary feature of the Chicco Next2Me Forever is the patented anti-misuse system. This safety system is activated by the buckles used to attach the crib to the parents’ bed, and ensure the side panel will not remain open unless it is securely fastened in the correct
position. It therefore also prevents the side panel from remaining in the lowered position when in free-standing mode. Not only does this make it incredibly easy for parents to identify incorrect set-up, it also ensures maximum safety for baby. When the child reaches 18 months, the side panel and legs can be removed from the Chicco Next2Me Forever, quickly and easily transforming it into a floor-level toddler bed. This style of bed plays an important role in child-led sleeping and developing independence, allowing them to create good sleep routines and helping them feel comfortable sleeping alone in their own room. As well as these game-changing new features, the Chicco Next2Me Forever includes all of the most-loved functions of the original side-sleeping cribs. With foldable feet, it can be attached to almost any bed, including divans. It also offers 11 adjustable height settings and a tilt function to help ease reflux and colic. The mesh windows provide enhanced air flow and improved visibility, whilst the firm but comfortable mattress is designed to keep the correct posture as little one sleeps. The launch of this exciting new member of the Chicco Next2Me family is just another example of how Chicco is committed to understanding and fulfilling the needs of parents around the world. This revolutionary value-for-money product represents the next chapter in the Chicco Next2Me journey and will create some exceptional new sales opportunities for their retail partners as they move through 2021.

BABY BOUTIQUE
One, Two, Baby Boutique! With an established store in Carlisle and a second store having opened their doors during the first lockdown in Preston, Nursery Today had the pleasure to question Baby Boutique’s Owner, Sarah Marsh. Firstly, how are you and the team?
We are all doing well, We are itching to get back to work and some kind of normality and the girls are missing the Baby Shows and getting out and about.
did not offer click and collect this time, as we were too busy online with little staff to manage this so we offered home delivery instead, as we found it easier to manage and with the lack of footfall around the towns we felt we did not miss out.
Can you tell us a little about your store? What was your inspiration to open your doors?
What would you say has been your largest challenge during this year?
We started life in my home town of Whitehaven, One day myself and my husband walked past a tiny back street shop and I said “That would make a good shop for me”. I was already trading online on a small level. When I was pregnant with my little girl Mia. I started selling baby clothing as we had a pub, where I could no longer work due to being pregnant. It was something to pass the time at first. Then I got my first shop which was freezing cold, had a damp cellar and no heating. However, I’m pleased to say we were not there for long as alongside this I started to do a pop up shop in Carlisle city centre and it was going well so we decided to open up there. 18 Months later we expanded into Preston and we have now have two Stores, Carlisle and Preston. We were hoping to expand again but given the pressures this year we are holding off a little as we already expanded the Preston Store in the first lockdown.
Did you manage to continue trading during lockdown while not being able to open your doors? Yes we managed to continue trading, however, we

The biggest challenge we have had this year was moving into our Preston store in the first lockdown. The move was already planned pre lockdown, however we did not get the new shop keys until we went into lockdown, which made it difficult to get basic things, like paint and rollers! We did not open the doors with the shop looking exactly how we wanted but about 2-3 weeks after lockdown was lifted it was pretty perfect. With Preston we are now the only Pram shop in Preston and with Mothercare and Mamas and Papas now closed it was now or never to super size the store and really make a good go of it.
And what has been your largest achievement?
My biggest achievement is the way we have built the business so quickly and we literally put everything we could back into the business to be able to do this. A few years ago I would have been dreaming about a big shop, standing at my pop up stall, and forever packing and unpacking my car with stock. Now we have two lovely shops and I have put everything into them to make them work.

You announced recently that a film crew was visiting your store - can you tell us a little more about this?
Oh yes we did, Channel 5 came to our store with the Radford’s, Britain’s biggest family. We were really excited to have the film crew in store and to be able to show off our new shop on camera. I even found a Pram that the baby expert Mrs Radford had not heard about and I managed to impress her with a demo of the Inglesina Aptica. I was very nervous with her already having 22 children when it came to prams. I thought she would have seen it all, but when she said to me she had never heard of Inglesina before I was so happy because I knew I could demonstrate
such a brilliant system to her! We are not sure when it will be aired yet but please watch out for it!
Have you experienced an increase in sales via your website since March of this year?
Our internet sales have definitely increased since March. They have been steadily increasing which is good, as the lockdowns obviously had a hard impact on the physical store so the internet has kept us ticking over.
What Social Media platforms do you use and is this key to your success?
We use Facebook, which is the one we do a lot of paid ads on, We also use Instagram and the girls have just set us up a tik tok account which is just really for a bit of fun. We can make quick videos of the prams which we then share on to our other social media, but one of our tik tok posts got 50k views and it was only up for a few days! So the girls are convincing me tik tok is more than just fun to do. Social media is definitely key to our business. When we launched the new Preston store this really helped on how to find us.
Do you feel that you have made any adjustments to your business model which you will continue to keep in place once the current pandemic has passed?
We have not adjusted anything really in terms of the way we work, we will continue to focus equally on the stores and internet sales.
Have you sourced any interesting products this year that you have added to existing brands that you currently stock?
Last year we sourced some footmuffs and hand muffs. This year they have gone down a storm! The profit margin on them is great as we sourced them ourselves and the quality is superb so we are really happy with this partnership.
What are the key attributes that you look for when sourcing new products?
When finding new products I like to look further afield at what other countries are doing and what is popular there. There is always a big draw for me, especially if we can have something exclusive to our area. A lot of what I look for in a company is the ease to deal with. If a company is easy to deal with that’s always a winner for me. Price protection is something I always feel strongly about too. Quite often prices are being driven down so low, there is barely any profit. If a company can manage to hold their prices so they are profitable for us as a retailer then we will push those companies and invest time and effort in to advertising their brand both in store and online.

BABY BOUTIQUE
Customer service is huge to us. I never want to let any customer down and we try to go above and beyond. Covid has been very trying for both us and the customer but we try to be there as much as we possibly can through various methods of communica tion.
Have you noticed any particular consumer trends emerging this year? Holding out to the last minute! Is that a trend? What we are experiencing is people are shopping in their very last few months of pregnancy.
Do you feel we have sufficient innovation in our industry and is there a particular product category that you feel has seen the highest level of innovation?
I do feel like we have sufficient innovation. However I think there is a lot more to come with technology in prams. I believe that things like the Bosch pram from Emmaljunga is just the tip of the iceberg. I can see in the future carrycots that monitor babies. I think Baby Monitors have improved significantly even in the last few years, they are so technical and I can see some of that technology crossing over to prams.
You stock many key nursery brands - is there a particular category that you feel you are experts in?
There isn’t a specific category we are experts in, however what we are trying to do (and this is probably because of me previously being a landlady and my love of entertaining) is to become experts in the experience. So we have designed our Preston store to be an amazing experience for parents from the moment they walk through the door. We have friendly staff, a great range of products and we have a selfie wall, a buggy track, and each new parent goes away with a little token gift from us to make them feel special. Pre Covid, we also used to do VIP days where we would offer little drinks and nibbles to parents, which we can not do at the moment but hopefully in the future we will be able too. We want the customer to go away and want to come back because of the experience that they remember and to make this memorable we need to make memories for them.
Is there a particular product category that is performing well for you at present?
Clothing has to be one of our strongest categories at the moment. This is usually the case in the run up to Christmas but definitely a lot of our internet sales are for Clothing and accessories.
How do you manage consumer expectations? How important is customer service to your business?
Customer service is huge to us. I never want to let any customer down and we try to go above and beyond. Covid has been very trying for both us and the customer but we try to be there as much as we possibly can through various methods of communication. We thrive on repeat business so we need to get it right the first time so that the customer will come back.
Do you feel you may have any stock issues over the coming months? Stock issues are facing us all. A lot of our clothing suppliers cancelled our whole winter orders and now we are facing issues with furniture and

wheeled goods. I think customers have been understanding, however I do think a lot more needs to be advertised in terms of shortages from Brands themselves to give clear messages to consumers.
Have you received strong support by the brands that you stock? We have received strong support from all the brands we stock - which is always appreciated.
Is there anything more they could offer to assist you?
I don’t think the brands can do anymore at this time to help stores apart from keep driving footfall to stores, letting everyone know we are here and that we are open says a lot and means a lot. So if you could all let everyone we are here that would be brilliant!
Do you feel that consumers have altered the way they will shop for nursery products?
I think this year will have altered a lot in the way people shop, which is why we want to focus on the experience and how amazing we are to visit. When Christmas comes around everyone flocks to the garden centres, not because they want a plant, but because they want to experience Christmas and the lights, the decorations etc. When a new baby is coming I want to be able to offer the same experience. You certainly don’t get that at home! I am a big believer in that people want to still touch and feel a product which is as important, for example, as a pram or furniture. If we can get them through the door with that everything else will hopefully be as easy as picking up them baubles in the garden centre that you never needed but liked the look of!
Finally, what do you feel the future will hold for you? Do you have any plans on the horizon you would like to share with Nursery Today readers? Hopefully the future for us is bright! And we might have some plans going into 2021 but let’s see how the next year starts first!

Peace of mind Baby Monitors Since being founded in 1997, Angelcare has been dedicated to providing high quality products offering peace of mind to families all over the world.
D
eveloped by experts, Angelcare’s researchbased, safety-driven approach has helped to revolutionise the infant care industry and its Baby Movement Monitor is recognised as being a market leader in the category, having cared for more than a million babies across the world. With their clever technology, intuitive design, and sleek aesthetics, the products are reassuring, reliable and stylish. Anxiety has always played a big role in being a parent, and now more than ever before, parents are facing this
Features & Benefits of the Angelcare range ■ W ireless SensAsure Movement Sensor Pad ■ Alarm will sound if there is no movement after 20 seconds ■ Non-contact monitoring ■ One-time installation ■ 5’’ Large LCD screen on the video models ■ Ideal for multiples, you can add an extra Movement Sensor Pad & Nursery Unit* ■ Wall-mount or tabletop Nursery Unit ■ Room temperature display on some Parent and Nursery Units ■ Infrared night vision ■ Two-way talk back ■ Digital zoom & pan ■ Secure 2.4GHz digital transmission does not use wifi Range up to 250 metres
pressure and seeking simple and safe solutions for caring for their babies. Angelcare products, especially the monitors, plug this gap perfectly being easy to install, easy to use and comforting. There’s no extra accessories to lose or wash, their closed transmitting system works without wifi which means it never loses a signal and they only alarm if no movement is detected after 20 seconds so parents can get the rest they need. Now, with four Monitors in the range it’s easier than ever to recommend an Angelcare Movement Monitor for any budget. The range comprises the AC527 baby movement, video & sound monitor (touch screen), AC327 baby movement, video & sound monitor (button screen), AC127 baby movement & sound monitor, AC027 baby movement monitor.
Wireless Movement Sensor Pad with non-contact SensAsure Technology The secret of their monitors’ success is the powerful movement detection technology. Angelcare’s SensAsure Movement Sensor Pad monitors all baby’s slightest wriggles across the entire surface of the mattress without baby even knowing it’s there. The Sensor Pad is designed to stay under the mattress so is a simple, wire free one-time installation, with no additional accessories to attach or to worry about coming off and getting lost.
Wall-mount or tabletop Nursery Unit The low-profile Nursery Unit can be placed on a wall or table top, there is a colour-coded room temperature display on the higher specified models, and it watches over baby while transmitting a crisp image both day and night.
Perfect for twins or multiples Advanced software allows a second Movement Sensor Pad and Nursery Unit combination to be added, meaning it’s perfect for monitoring multiples. Two babies can be seen in full screen without missing any alert. An extra Nursery Unit can even be added to monitor another child’s room or the playroom. The AC527 can also be used without the movement detection for those early toddler years. Angelcare’s internationally awardwinning lines of baby monitors, nappy disposal systems and baby bath care products have come to lead the market in nearly 60 countries worldwide and are more popular than ever, giving peace of mind to parents and providing quality products to retailers. ongratulations to all the winners of the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards 2021! Streamed online at 4pm on Tuesday 24th November, this year’s awards were hosted by Bauer Media UK’s Editorial Director, Lucie Cave and Bauer Media Group’s Digital Editor for Mother&Baby, Maria Martin. Supported by supermarket giant Asda, the awards celebrated products, stores and brands chosen by Mother&Baby readers that were proudly tried and tested by real mums, before they land in stores in 2021. The established accolade is highly-coveted by brands and trusted by mothers – it is the one of the most coveted parenting awards that everyone in the industry wants to win. To create the live streamed event, the M&B team embarked on a new partnership with tech services provider CrowdComms, following their successful work with the recent virtual National Rail Awards. This is alongside their established partnership with events company, Eclipse. The virtual event brought together a larger audience then in previous years, including some well-known names from across the parenting world to see the winners announced. This year represented the biggest audience the awards have ever had and more than double the capacity of previous years physical venues. The online platforms live chat and private messaging features also offered attendees the chance to network and share their comments throughout the event. Maria Marin, Digital Group Editor, Mother & Baby commented: “Mother&Baby awarded products are TRIED, TESTED and TRUSTED by real mums so whether they are a first-time Mum or an experienced parent, shoppers can trust the products to make her life easier. That is why taking home a Mother&Baby Award makes such a difference to the parenting industry.” To watch the ceremony and the award announcements, simply visit www.mandbawards2021.com and log in.

THE POWER OF
EVOLUTION “This is a new generation…This is egg2 - egg. Reborn.”

015 saw the introduction of a brand new 3-in-1 travel system. The egg. The line “Some products are made. Some products are born.” brought forth a new understanding of what innovation was and what it meant. egg was born from a desire to take infant travel in a new direction. One that celebrates luxury, style, design and quality engineering. But lifestyles and behaviours change, and therefore attitudes towards products change – Some may

call it ‘Evolution’ - to grow, to evolve. The team at egg call it ‘Re-birth’. This is a new generation, the power of Evolution.
This is egg2 egg. Reborn. It was important for egg2 to preserve the DNA of egg; the show stopping look and premium feel is very much reminiscent of the original model, and putting the stroller together is just as intuitive. Here’s a closer look at what’s new on the egg2:
Chassis & Seat The most obvious difference is the larger seat unit, which is 70mm taller than the original egg seat, enabling owners to use their egg2 for longer. The chassis has naturally grown for balance and to house the seat, yet is just as compact when it comes to folding away for travel or storage.
The Hub Our eyes are instantly drawn to the new redesigned central hub which proudly sports a metallic ring in the shape of an egg, a new signature of the egg brand
first seen of course on the egg Shell car seat. Housing the connection for the upper units, this part of the chassis is positioned 36mm higher which makes a real difference for parents when tending to their baby - for example, in the first six months when set up as a pram. Switching around to the handle, that same handstitched luxury we’re used to on all egg strollers. The handle on the egg2 has 5 position adjustment with an increased height range of 99 – 111cm (up to 107cm on the original), perfect for taller parents.
Folding & Unfolding As with the original egg, the smooth one-handed fold design remains very much the same and the chassis freestands when it’s folded; But significantly, the handle on the egg2 clears the ground meaning the chassis stands on the wheels only. Unfolding the chassis has been made easier with the secondary chassis lock now facing away from the parent; as with the original egg, there is still a primary lock on the handle to keep the chassis closed during transit.
Wheels The wheelbase has been extended by 60mm, which with larger front and rear wheels and all-round suspension, makes for ideal multi-terrain strolling; egg2 also features Tru-ride technology and lockable swivel wheels, providing exceptional handling, strollability and pleasure when out and about. The new tri-spoke wheel design adds a real sense of elegance, whilst the
playful egg shaped tyre tread ensures egg2 to leave its mark wherever it goes! The longer wheelbase has also allowed for a larger shopping basket, which now has a capacity of 21 litres (four more litres than on the original egg), creating extra space for those shopping essentials.
Seat & Canopy Sitting higher on the chassis, the new egg2 seat position offers little explorers a real point of vantage. The seat has been fitted with a headrest and 5-point safety harness which integrates an enhanced quick adjust pinch mechanism for expedience simply pull back the magnetic sealed cover on the rear of the seat and adjust the harness and headrest accordingly. For easy access, the bumper bar operates on a gated function and can be completely removed if necessary. Comfort was always best in class on the original egg and egg2 doesn’t
disappoint; the seat has three recline positions and can be adjusted using the lever at the top of the seat. In addition, the calf-rest has five individual positions and features a hidden storage compartment underneath the seat lining. Concealed underneath the calf-rest is an integrated insect net, which can be stowed away when not in use. The new egg2 canopy is fully extendable and features UPF50+ protective fabric. There is also a ventilation net spanning the circumference of the canopy, which can be exposed by pulling the cover forward. The seat unit is suitable for use up to 25kg, when used as a single stroller, and 15kg per seat when used in the tandem configuration.
Fabrics & Colours New collection fabrics are stitched from a soft-touch marl and will be launching in six colours: Quartz, Monument Grey,
Feather, Paprika, Olive and Cobalt. Special Edition colours staying in the range include the popular Diamond Black, which is available on a beautiful rose gold chassis, and the stealthy Just Black – available from selected independent stockists only. Saving the best until last, the collection sees the return of the iconic Jurassic edition with the new Jurassic Grey. Inspired by wild reptile styling, deep metallic dyed fabrics delicately dress a striking gunmetal chassis with finesse.
Conclusion Following on from the feats of the egg stroller, the egg2 brings forth some pretty impressive evolutionary modifications. Designed in Britain, this new model stays true to the school of ‘Inspired Luxury Design’ with soft-touch marl tailoring, smooth curves and superb engineering. Ensuring an effortlessly smooth ride for baby, egg2 offers confidence, vogue and exceptional ease of use for new parents.
Accessories The egg2 carrycot has received a design upgrade. Whilst staying true to it’s original shape, the tapered edges have been widened slightly which has created a more spacious interior. As with the seat, the canopy integrates a ventilation net which can be unveiled by pulling up the covering fabric. One of the best features and considerations on egg2 though is the ergonomic handling, which provides greater control for the parent; taking inspiration from its cousin (the award winning Oyster3), the egg2 carrycot not only sits higher on the chassis but can be detached using a lever positioned at head end, replacing the original two button release – simply pull up and lift off. Both the stroller and carrycot come with fitted raincovers. In regards to other core accessories, the egg Shell (i-Size) infant car seat, footmuff and backpacks are all available in matching egg2 colours. The new design footmuff (exclusive to special
edition colours) is worth taking note of; modelled on a camping style sleeping bag, the footmuff features soft and warm inner lining, whilst the outer matches the stroller fabric. For little explorers with muddy wellies, a cover at the bottom can be removed allowing them to stay warm without getting the fabric dirty. In addition, the central bind can be fully unzipped and used as a cosy infant blanket. The footmuff comes with a stylish and handy duffle bag. The new egg collection backpacks are both practical and contemporary by design. Finished with a signature egg emblem, they’re suited to both men and women. Special edition backpacks are available in toploader style and generally offer greater storage capacity. For growing families, egg2 can also be set up as a tandem stroller in six approved configurations, ideal for twins or close-in-age siblings. Being a larger stroller and using new egg2 tandem adaptors, there is naturally more space between units, which definitely helps when strolling with two seats.

Luke Burns
GENERAL MANAGER, CYBEX How important are brand names in this category and why? Reputable and award-winning brands offer reassurance to parents as they have been highly commended for their exceptional safety features. We are proud to have been awarded over 300 awards for our child car seats, with the most recent being ‘best in class’ performed by Stiftung Warentest and ADAC for the ATON B i-SIZE and the German Design Award for the SOLUTION Z i-FIX. Do you feel that the consumer is taking into consideration safety elements before style? More and more yes. Safety is a number one priority for parents when it comes to choosing a car seat, followed by functionality, ease of use and style. Consumers are more likely to choose a car seat that is equipped with enhanced safety features and one that has been tested to the latest regulations. Is price a consideration, are consumers looking at price first, then safety second? Ultimately, parents have different needs and budgets. They also require different stage car seats from an infant car seat right through to 12 years. Price is a consideration – that is why at CYBEX, we offer freedom of choice with varying price points, but I believe more consumers are aware that the higher the price point, the more innovative and safer the car seat is likely to be. Car seats do last for many years, so they are worth the investment. How are you currently driving your message to consumers? There are several ways in which we are driving our message to consumers. From social media activity to press reviews, our consumers can always benefit from the latest product information and feel confident knowing that our car seats are tested by real mums through some of the most well-known and respected parenting titles such as MadeforMums. Our retailers are a huge part of our messaging too. We have a brand new CYBEX academy that offers online training. The online training, combined with store training from our team on the road, all supports with the messaging being passed on to consumers. How are you supporting your retailers within this category? All of our team, from our dedicated trainers to our sales representatives, have been trained on all products and regularly visit stores to answer any questions or provide any additional training. The team are always on hand to schedule refresher sessions for stores or training for new team members. We want our retailer partners to know the ins and outs of products so they can be in the best position to advise parents. We have launched an online interactive training academy which allows retailers to learn about the Cybex products on their mobile. It features interactive videos and all the key information that retailers need to serve their customers – they can even log in when they are doing a demo to check key information. We are also running online live demos.

Do you feel consumers are better educated now as to what they will need during the various stages? Absolutely, this is mainly down to the significant increase in online shopping and the research process that goes with this. Consumers today want to be able to compare each product and to do so, they want to know as many details as possible. There is a great deal of information that they need to be aware of, such as updates in regulations, what seat is required for each age and what fits their own vehicle. It can be overwhelming, but we have noticed that modern parents aim to be very much on top of this. How important are brand names in this category and why… Brand names are incredibly important to parents when looking for a car seat as the safety of their child is paramount. Once parents trust a brand, they tend to stick with it throughout the journey, as long as budget allows. At Maxi-Cosi, we are a heritage brand, and our expertise goes all the way back to 1984. Parents can be assured that when they are buying from us, they are buying a product which has been created by experts in their field and tested to the most stringent safety standards. Do you feel that the consumer is taking into consideration safety elements before style? Absolutely. Within this category, safety should always be the foremost consideration, but just because these are functional products, does not mean that they cannot also be part of a stylish travel system. Do you feel consumers are looking for any ‘additional’ functions the car seat may have? For example, alarm alerts, visual aids for correct fitting, etc. At Maxi-Cosi, we are constantly considering how to improve the ease of use of our car seats without compromising on safety. We introduced the first rotating car seat (Axiss) in 2007 and more recently, the Coral which has a removable and lightweight soft carrier. In Group 2/3, the ClickAssist feature of our Kore Pro i-Size helps children safely buckle up by themselves. We will continue to look at parenting trends and speak to our consumers to see how we can help in their parenting journey. How important are award wins or accolades in this sector? Does this assist with consumer confidence in a brand? Certainly, especially if products are tested and approved by real parents. Where safety is a factor, any awards will help to reassure consumers they are getting the safest option available. Awards/endorsements from the likes of Mother & Baby and Which? are incredibly important to help parents decide if a product is right for them. What better way to make that decision than based on other parents’ real feedback and independent industry bodies’ opinion? How are you supporting your retailers within this category? Depending on our product focus, we offer varied marketing support across online/ offline channels and always work closely with retailers to ensure the consumer journey is an enjoyable and clear one. 2020 has been a challenge but we are proud of all our retailers and the service they offer to consumers even in these trying times. Next year, we will integrate a new resource site which will enable our retailers to search for relevant assets more easily and we will also introduce a very exciting retailer tool that offers bitesize information at the touch of a button…watch this space!

HEAD OF PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT, JOIE Do you feel consumers are better educated now as to what they will need during the various stages? There is so much choice around that certainly the average consumer does plenty of research to educate themselves before deciding on the right seat for their child and committing to a purchase. However, as there are currently the two regulatory standards running concurrently, manufacturers have a constant battle to keep the messaging clear and concise. As an industry, are we putting out sufficient innovation on the dangers of purchasing a second-hand car seat? The message is certainly consistent across the brands so there is definitely awareness out there. That said, child safety is such an important topic, there is always more that brands can do to reemphasise the point. How important are brand names in this category and why? For many consumers, the brand is a very important consideration. A reputable brand gives the consumer confidence on the quality and safety behind their new purchase so it is really important that brands build consumer trust in their products. Is innovation important in this category? Brands are always striving to create new and more innovative products – we are always looking at new ways we can develop our products while maintaining ease of use and affordability. We are seeing an innovation at the moment that centres around reducing misuse, particularly making car seats simpler to install. Do you feel consumers are looking for any ‘additional’ functions the car seat may have? For example, alarm alerts, visual aids for correct fitting, etc. Not really. These are features that many brands are adding to their premium offering, giving added value for those who want to spend that bit extra. I don’t
think that consumers are actively seeking out these features as ‘must haves’ when they first start looking into the products – more that they stumble across them and they can then tip the favour. How important are award wins or accolades in this sector? Does this assist with consumer confidence in a brand? Earning awards is very important for brands because they help to give the consumer confidence in the product and the brand as a whole. IT gives the products that seal of approval that consumers look for before parting with their hard-earned money. How are you currently driving your message to consumers? During these challenging times we have tried to find more creative ways to get our message across to consumers – as we haven’t been able to be face to face, we have focused on our virtual offering. During the first lockdown we offered a virtual car seat check to give consumers peace of mind that their little ones were travelling safely. We have also filmed a series of live online events that allow us to demo our products and consumers can actually see the products being physically built and used. How are you supporting your retailers within this category? Covid aside, we have a training team on hand to help retailers understand the fitment and features of the product range, giving them inside knowledge as to the benefits of our products and where they stand apart from others in the same category. We have also further digital assets available to help with retailer training and virtual training sessions, which have been particularly useful while store visits are limited. We have also been trying to ensure our retailers have good stock levels to generate confidence and repeat business.

PRODUCT MANAGER, CHICCO, RECARO, ARTSANA UK
Do you feel consumers are better educated now as to what they will need during the various stages? When it comes to car seats, we know there is wide range of information out there, which can often become quite confusing for consumers to know where to look for trusted advice. To help with this, we have developed a comprehensive guide in our brochure, which outlines the different standards and the features of our car seats, and have a number of blog posts available on the Chicco website. Additionally, we also frequently utilise our social media channels, such as Instagram, to help share informative posts around car seats. Not only do they help to make the buying process slightly easier for parents, but they can also help to inform parents who may not be aware that their little one’s car seat needs upgrading. Do you feel that the consumer is taking into consideration safety elements before style? As car seats are such an important product in terms of protecting little ones, we do find that safety features are still the main deciding factor in the buying process. However, there are also a lot of other considerations that parents have to make, and elements such as ease of use, longevity, durability and style are other important features that set a car seat apart from its competition. You then have features such as integrated speaker systems and Bluetooth systems, which may not be an essential requirement but are a ‘nice to have’ for many parents. With both our Chicco and RECARO car seats, the most stringent testing is carried out to ensure our products meet the required safety standards here in the UK, providing parents with peace of mind over the safety of their little one.
Do you feel consumers are looking ‘additional’ functions the car seat may have? For example, alarm alerts, visual aids for correct fitting, etc.
for any
Additional functions are definitely an added benefit for many parents, and in most cases these are designed with safety in mind. For example, on RECARO car seats such as the Salia Elite, there are colour indicators on the ISOFIX leg that enables parents to easily identify whether the car seat has been installed correctly or not. How are you supporting your retailers within this category? Our retail partners are an important part of the Artsana family, which is why we continue to invest in marketing techniques and promotions across all of our brands to help drive sales. Whether it be specialised in-store POS that can help demonstrate the key features of a product to customers, exclusive promotions or online resources retailers can use for their own social media channels, we are always looking for new ways to further support our retailers.

Car seats are a legal requirement by law, making this a truly unique nursery category.
A
s a product category, car seats are not only a core essential product, they are also the one nursery category that is a legal requirement for any infant or child under the age of 12 years old or 135 centimetres tall, whichever comes first. making this a truly unique category. However, this is also a category that can confuse consumers as to what they may require for the various stages, from birth through to potentially the age of 12. We asked Cybex’s General Manager, Luke Burns, if he feels consumers are better educated now on what they will require and if we are sending out a universal message to retailers to assist in giving solid advice? “More and more retailers are using the Baby Products Association (BPA) guide that CYBEX leads to ensure everyone is communicating the same message and retailers are educated on the latest car seat information. They can then inform customers and ensure they are choosing the right car seat suitable for their child. “That said, this is a message we have always pushed and continuously need to push online and in store. We will continue to work even closer with retailers to offer training, so they can deliver the best product demos and information to parents, making them more aware of when is the best time to make the switch to the next stage car seat.” Of course, perhaps now more than ever, we are also experiencing a higher level of second-hand car seats being sold online, perhaps due to the current pandemic. We, as an industry, know this is a total ‘no no’, and the safety dangers involved with purchasing a second hand seat, but does the consumer? We asked Dorel’s Marketing Manager, Debbie Wakefield if brands are sending out sufficient information on the dangers of purchasing a second-hand car seat? “It is the responsibility of

each brand to ensure they educate parents in the risks involved. Overall, we would say that we are all effectively working together to make sure that this is more widely known.” Said Debbie. “Here at Maxi-Cosi our Customer Care experts are highly knowledgeable and always on hand to advise parents on the dangers of a second-hand car seat. We also have educational articles on our website, and we do include these in our in-store training with retailers to ensure that we are reaching consumers at every possible touchpoint.” Within other product categories in our industry, style can take a leading role when it comes to purchase. We asked Joie’s Head of Product Development, Damon Marriot, if he feels that consumers are taking into consideration safety elements before style? “Safety is always going to be a priority, especially when it comes to car seats. While the two elements come hand in hand with higher end product ranges, safety will still be a consideration with entry price points - style is an added bonus when you’re buying a premium product.” This is also a category that continues to deliver innovation, whether that be with the increased popularity of an infant carrier with lie-flat capabilities, or sensor alerts built into the seat to alert parents to whether the seat is correctly fitted, or indeed if they have unwittingly left the child in the car! With this in mind, we asked Luke if he felt that consumers are looking for additional functions the car seat may have? “Additional functions are designed to make everyday life easier, especially for new parents who want reassurance that their child is safe at all times. Our i-Size car seats are available with the SensorSafe Smart chest clip which provides essential alerts to help prevent critical situations such as overheating, when your child
The comprehensive guide from the Baby Products Association ‘Child Car Seats – ending the confusion’ gives advice for parents, carers, retailers and suppliers on all aspects of buying and using child car seats, including differentiation between R44 and R129 Regulations. unbuckles the clip or if your child has been seated for too long. “In addition, our car seats feature audio alarm alerts and visual aids for correct fitting, all designed to make customers’ lives easier, reduce user error and improve safety.” We also asked Luke if innovation is important in this category? “The safety of a child is paramount and therefore continuous innovation is essential – what we know today can change tomorrow with real innovation. Lifestyle and customer needs are always evolving too so it’s important that our car seats are developed in line with consumer demand and their needs, whilst always offering the highest safety standards.“ Debbie would agree stating: “Constant testing within the category naturally leads to innovation not only in terms of safety, but also convenience for parents. At Maxi-Cosi, this is something that we are renowned for. Not only have we earned the Innovation Award at Kind + Jugend two years in a row, we have also been awarded the Innovation of the Year Award by the consumer testers of Mother and Baby for two consecutive years. These were for the introduction of the Maxi-Cosi Jade and most recently, the Maxi-Cosi Coral.”

Soothing solutions Pacifiers and soothers play an integral role in keeping baby calm.
T
here is always a level of anxiety for parents when a new baby or small infant won’t settle, which creates a need for pacifiers and soothers. This is a product category which is all about keeping little one calm and settled - whether that be through the use of a dummy, teething aid, comforter or a motion rocker. Comforters can vary, from a favourite blanket through to a cherished soft toy, with dummies being something of a repeat purchase as these are easily lost or mislaid when out and about. The fact that pacifiers and soothers are a relatively frequent purchase, especially in comparison to many other products within the baby care category, make them a particular attractive product to stock. Many parents prefer to have multiple soothers for their child, perhaps for instances where they need a backup and have no access to a steriliser. That said, however, we have seen the emergence of portable UV sterilisers, providing a handy solution to this problem. Here we highlight a number of products that are available to order now.
Dummies with style Nibbling is proud to be the exclusive distributor for BIBS Danish dummies. BIBS are the one of the most stylish, on-trend and high quality pacifiers on the market in 2020. Made from 100% BPA Free natural latex rubber with a classic cherry shaped teat - babies go crazy for them! At Nibbling they carry the Colour, Night, Supreme and Loops collections in over 40 colours. Available in Size’s: 1 (0-6 months), Size 2 (6-18 months) & Size 3 (18+ months). And the best part? - they are compatible with ALL Nibbling dummy clip’s. www.nibbling.co.uk

Happy days! The new NUK Classic Happy Days Silicone Soother: modelled on a mother’s nipple as she breastfeeds NUK, inventors of the soother that is right for the jaw, have now made the original shape even better. It is modelled on a mother’s nipple as she breastfeeds, fitting optimally into the mouth when the baby sucks on it. The special thing about this soother: it is particularly thin and narrow to reduce the pressure on the teeth and jaws. The flat baglet and the smooth underside ensure a pleasant feeling in the mouth and give the tongue enough space for natural sucking movements. NUK Soothers are an optimal fit in children’s mouths. All NUK Soothers have the NUK Air System which allows air to escape out of the baglet through a vent. This means it stays nicely soft and pliable and relieves the jaw. www.nuk.co.uk

nursery matters JOHN BARKER Image source: pexels.com
Barking Mad This month Pramland’s John Barker takes a look at the impact Lockdown 2 has had on everyone in the nursery retail sector.
T
here once lived a small (ok, so he wasn’t that small) boy called JB. JB lived in a far away land, just past the home of the yellow bellies and right a bit once you pass the magic bridge. It was a strange land filled with toothless ogres and folk that think nightwear should, and can be worn out in public. You know the type of folk, they class joggers as every day wear and Elizabeth Duke gold drips off them like honey off a bee. Pramland was it’s name and it was part of a world shrouded in uncertainty and oddness. The land suffered from a terrible sickness and many folk feared for their loved ones. The evil ruler of the land, Borisof Wigglyhair knew the land was sick but he just couldn’t settle on what he should be doing about it. One week Borisof told all the town folks to eat and make merry, then the next he told them “you must stay at home, but go to work, but don’t go if you don’t have to. . . .and do not go to the pub as grog will make you sick again. . . .Especially if you drink it after the moon hits 10 in the sky!”, JB was confused, and he wasn’t alone. Sounds exciting doesn’t it? I think it could lead to a multi-million book

deal, cinema trilogy and Netflix 12 part series! (talking of which. . .if you haven’t already, you much watch the Queens Gambit! Wow it’s awesome). It may sound like a fantastic story but in reality it’s what we’ve all been living through for almost a year . . . . and I’m a little fed up with it now. So lockdown 2.0 is officially over, the R rate nationally stands somewhere between .8 and 1 (If I understand correctly this is a good thing and means things are getting better?) and a vaccine as arrived. The stock markets are starting to rally; house prices are on the rise and football stadiums are finally welcoming fans back through the turnstiles. This all sounds very positive doesn’t it? It does until you also read about the latest batch of job losses. Arcadia group slipping in to administration caused Debenhams to also finally fly the white flag. Shortly after another retailer, Bonmarche also announced they’d gone in to administration. So for every piece of good news the retail sector has multiple tales of woe. Figures are suggesting Black Friday

2020 was a complete, unmitigated disaster across the board with most retailers showing little or no movement in sales figures. This should come as little surprise given the current state of the nation. Lockdown 2.0 felt very, very different to its predecessor. Despite being only a third as long the fact that consumers had a definitive end date and where given notice before it happened appears to have had an impact on how retail fared during this time. As lockdown is lifted we open our doors to the public in the middle of their last minute Christmas shopping. Considering many of our customers have already received their last pay cheque before the festive season they are forced in to making a decision – spend the money on purchases for their pending arrival or go mad on Christmas, after all it’s been a rubbish year! With three weeks to the big day our usual last hooray, also known as November just didn’t happen. So do we plan for a better than usual December? Or do we assume that December will remain unchanged and January will see the inevitable surge of business? Either way the next few weeks are going to be interesting and difficult.
When we factor in to this the stock issues most of our industry is suffering I think we can all agree. . . .2021 cannot come soon enough! We’ve blundered from stock issues caused by factory closures, to stock issues caused by distribution problems . . . and now (because 2020 is the year that keeps on giving) we are heading to issues caused by Brexit. It’s been nice to see that some brands are finally starting to issue statements regarding the stock problems, this does go some way towards supporting what we are telling the end consumer when their goods haven’t arrived and it is very much appreciated. So to those that have. . . Thank you! I find myself in a different frame of mind following the last, brief lockdown. After we left lockdown 1 I was very positive and upbeat. It was hard not to be. We’d received a fair level of support from central and local government and we had a huge number of customers clambering to get in to our store. Now, after lockdown 2 we are looking at a hole in the cashflow caused by a (forced) four week closure and a support package that I can only describe as an insult to every small businesses hard
Now, after lockdown 2 we are looking at a hole in the cash flow caused by a (forced) four week closure and a support package that I can only describe as an insult to every sma ll businesses hard work, work, plus we are seeing a significant downturn in business caused by the natural effect of Christmas on our industry. Ok, so January will be the adjustment we need and no doubt my mood will have turned after a good start to trading in 2021, but I cannot help but feel let down and abandoned during lockdown 2. The fact that many of the large, national retailers continued to profit from the temporary closure of all their competitors just fuels my mood more. So, where am I going with all this? Well, if this article does nothing else I hope it makes you know that the way you are feeling and the worries you are having are not unique to you. Being an independent store is scary and lonely. But knowing that there’s a whole mob of likeminded people out there all facing the same
struggles is very reassuring. Ok, so it won’t solve all your problems (only receiving a goods dispatch note will do that at the moment!) but it’s very reassuring to know that someone has your back. The NSG has been fantastic during these very difficult times and I applaud you all! Well done everyone that has helped another store out with stock or offered advice with a difficult customer. You are all amazing! And on that note I come to the end of my article. I do hope I haven’t depressed you all too much and I do sincerely hope that you understand my words. Yes, we are all individuals with our own businesses to run – but together we are so much more! Here’s to hoping 2021 is a fantastic year for you all and I wish you the very merriest of tidings, much peace and love JB x

It is without doubt that 2020 has been an ‘interesting’ year and has certainly shaken up the entire world with companies having to think outside the box and respond quickly to one of the most challenging situations we have experienced since World War Two. As well as a terrible loss of life, there have been numerous business casualties throughout the UK with companies simply not being able to sustain long term lack of trading. The events and hospitality industry has been hit particularly hard and we now wait with bated breath to see the if the new Covid-19 vaccination rolled out in early December will deliver its promise to restore some normality to our lives. The Baby Products Association works closely with Harrogate International Nursery Fair, which is the UK’s only baby trade show and an important resource for manufacturers and suppliers of baby products; as well as retailers and buyers relaying them to the end consumer. Having had to cancel the 2020 event completely, we now support the show in its aim – with the government’s green light – to bring the nursery industry together once again in March 2021. We sincerely hope that the Association’s team will be able to meet with members, potential members and

industry players once again to discuss how we can continue working to promote and improve the baby products industry at a European level (the Association remains a member of the European Nursery Products Confederation and will continue its important work with experts from around the world). In the meantime, the UK faces another business hurdle with huge logistical challenges imposed by Brexit from 1st January 2021. The Association has received numerous requests for help and advice and has consequently put together resources which hopes to answer those questions. If you are a member, you should already have received these via our e-bulletin service, but if you would like to receive them again, please contact us at info@b-p-a.org. Whilst Christmas will undoubtedly be a slightly more subdued event this year, we hope that your families remain safe and well and that you can enjoy a small gathering with loved ones before we launch into what we all hope will be a much more ‘normal’ and prosperous 2021. Don’t forget to visit the website at www.b-p-a.org where you will find resources and information useful to your business.
The Baby Products Association has re-branded with a new logo to incorporate the union flag reflecting its position as a representative for UK businesses. If you are a member of the Association, you are able to use the new logo on print and online marketing materials. If you would like a copy of this, please contact Christine Scippo at info@b-p-a.org stating the format you require.
Tech giants will be subject to a new regime to give consumers more choice and control over their data, help small businesses thrive, and ensure news outlets are not forced out by their bigger rivals. A dedicated Digital Markets Unit, which will be set up within the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), will work closely with regulators including Ofcom and the Information Commissioner’s Office to introduce and enforce a new code to govern the behaviour of platforms that currently dominate the market, such as Google and Facebook, to ensure consumers and small businesses aren’t disadvantaged. Business Secretary Alok Sharma said: “Digital platforms like Google and Facebook make a significant contribution to our economy and play a massive role in our day-to-day lives - whether it’s helping us stay in touch with our loved ones, share creative content or access the latest news. But the dominance of just a few big tech companies is leading to less innovation, higher advertising prices and less choice and control for consumers.” The new code will govern commercial arrangements between publishers and platforms to help keep publishers in business - helping enhance the sustainability of high-quality online journalism and news publishing in the UK. The proposals could also help give small businesses fair access to platform services including digital advertising, allowing them to grow their business’ online presence. The code could be used to ensure platforms are not applying unfair terms, conditions or policies to certain business customers, including news publishers. Currently, dominant online platforms can impose terms on news publishers that limit their ability to monetise their content - severely impacting their ability to thrive. The government has set out its plans to take forward the development of the new unit and code of conduct in its response to the market study it asked the CMA to produce on online platforms and digital marketing. It will form a major part of the government’s work to support the sustainability of the UK’s world leading news publishing sector and make sure, as news moves ever more online, publishers get a fair deal from the platforms on which they rely.
