Dead of Summer 6K Death Ridge Brewery and Verdun Adventure Bound present The Dead of Summer 6K. The XC course begins and ends at Death Ridge Brewery and includes a significant portion of the Verdun Adventure Bound Cross Country Course. If you keep an eye out, you might actually see some Emu and a Zebra (no, really!) as the course cuts through a neighbor’s property. The event runs from 6-9 p.m. on July 23. It costs $30 per runner.

Remington Farmers Market goers looking to escape some of the summer heat found a cool and refreshing way to do so. Kids and adults alike enjoyed Water Wars on July 16, which featured a dunk tank, tug of war, water games, music, food and more! Found at 150 West Bowen Street, the Remington Farmers Market welcomed vendors such as Shamrock Acres, LLamazing Blessed Homestead LLC and Fauquier Reaches for Excellence in School Health (FRESH) from 2-6 p.m. After the market, the Remington Community Garden welcomed band Mandalele. The event was free to attend. FRESH even had games and free books for the children.

First responders honored with awards The Valor Awards continued for its fifth year. Law enforcement, fire and rescue agencies gathered at Salem Volunteer Fire Department on July 14 to be honored for their contributions to the community during the Culpeper Chamber of Commerce’s fifth annual Valor Awards and Dinner. “Almighty God, how great it is to be here tonight to celebrate with these people that are supporting the ones that make a difference,” said Chaplin R.E. Deane, who presented the invocation. Every year, the Chamber hosts the dinner and awards ceremony to recognize the heroes of Culpeper County. Invited and honored agencies included Culpeper County Volunteer Fire Department, Brandy Station Volunteer Fire Department, Richardsville Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad, Inc., Salem Volunteer Fire & Rescue, Little Fork Volunteer Fire & Rescue, Rapidan Volunteer Fire & Rescue, Culpeper County Volunteer Rescue Squad, Culpeper County Office of Emergency Services, Reva Volunteer Fire & Rescue, Culpeper County Public Safety Communication Center, Culpeper County Animal Control, Culpeper Police Department, Culpeper County Sheriff ’s Office, and the Virginia State Police. Following the invocation, Chamber President and CEO Jeff Say presented Deane with an award for his 63 years of service. Deane is a decorated Navy veteran and in September 1959, joined Culpeper County Volunteer Fire Department. He is the oldest living member. Although aach member of the county agencies also received challenge coins to recognize their dedication and service, there were a select few who received a special recognition of a Valor Award. Madison County officers had attempted to pull the driver over causing him to flee and reportedly shoot out of his car at civilians, other cars and the officers. From the Little Fork Volunteer Fire Department, Assistant Chief Mike Strawderman and firefighters Mike Nelson and Mike Kitis were honored for their work in removing a young man’s hand trapped between a full sized steel sea shipping container weighing over 8,000 pounds and a wood block. Davis, Sylvia Whetzel, Kennan Allison and Missy Breeden were honored for their hard work fielding a massive amount of weather-related calls during a weather warning for severe thunderstorms. The staff received 326 inbound phone calls and dispatched a total of 30 different weather-related events within 10 hours on top of other emergency calls. From Culpeper County Office of Emergency Services, EMT Mike Barrett, Paramedic John Woodburn and Lt. Ryan Switzer were honored after saving a man’s life after he had collapsed at the gym. When the crew first arrived, the man was unresponsive, not breathing with no pulse. Before the ambulance arrived at the hospital, the patient began to moan and breathe on his own. He was able to make a full recovery.

Adoption event held for rescued felines Forgotten Felines of Culpeper works to give furry friends their forever homes. BY

Rescuing the abandoned and forgotten, with no cat left behind. That’s the motto of nonprofit cat and kitten rescue group Forgotten Felines of Culpeper. On July 16, the nonprofit hosted its fifth annual Kittenpalooza at the PetSmart in Culpeper as a way to streamline adoption for some of their dozens of cats and kittens in foster homes. An estimated 25 felines were up for adoption, and the nonprofit received upwards of 13 adoption applications. FFC Founder and President Lynn DeFazio, who has worked as a kindergarten teacher for 30 years, got into rescue because she felt as though she wasn’t able to help her then young daughter who has special needs. “It felt good knowing I was helping cats and kittens when they had no voice,” she said. “When rescuing, I would never leave just one kitten

Volunteer Annette Aluzas shows a young girl a kitten available for adoption. behind.” She recalled one night where she waited in her car for eight hours to get the last kitten back with its family. FFC works to rescue cats and kittens, rehabilitate, vaccinate/spay/
neuter and adopt back out into the community. As of recently, DeFazio said, most of their fosters have come to the group because they’ve been abandoned by their human family after a move to
another location. Frequently, owners have not spayed/neutered the now free cats, spurring a rise in feral cat populations. FFC holds multiple in-person adoption events throughout the year, each with a different theme. DeFazio attributes her career in teaching as her outlet for continuing the themed events. Admittedly, most of their adoption inquiries stem from online interest. Even though her life now seemingly revolves around pets and their wellbeing, DeFazio recalls as a child never having a pet for more than two weeks. Her mother told her then, when she grows up, she can have all the pets she wants. DeFazio laughs at the thought now due to her passion project. When families come to adopt a cat from FCC, each cat will be spayed/neutered, be up to date on vaccinations and socialized. However, DeFazio doesn’t let just anyone adopt one of their furry friends. Families must apply, provide references and meet their new potential family member in person. In FFC’s adoption process, once the adopter has an approved application, they also sign a contract before leaving with their cat. maria@culpepertimes.com

Christopher Riffe, 32, described his childhood and life as uneventful until he began to hear a religious voice speaking of God and the devil in his head in 2012. He believes the voices may have started due to the commotion surrounding the end of the Mayan calendar. Despite the years, a conclusive diagnosis has not been determined, but Riffe describes it as manic depression with psychotic features. He’s been admitted into the hospital about once a year since he began hearing voices and has gone through the gambit of medicines. In late 2021, he got on a new medication that made him feel like a kid again. He’s been in full recovery since then.

Daniel Ciaccio, 66, PTSD, substance use disorder and other co-occurring disorders such as bipolar disorder, depression and ADHD. Ciaccio remembers a fond vacation he took his family to Florida in about the 6th grade, however, he also remembers being touched inappropriately by a neighbor that same year. He would try to run away to Florida where he called it his happy place but ended up getting in trouble for white collar crimes, which sent him to jail twice. He abused both alcohol and cocaine before becoming sober 24 years ago, with two relapses under his belt. Ciaccio said life has thrown some lemons at him but he’s grateful for his seven consecutive years of sobriety and his ability to help others going through similar struggles.

KRISTOFER NELSON Kristofer Nelson, 42, worked as a medic in the military. He began to use opiates to self-medicate himself for his PTSD, depression and anxiety. Despite realizing what he was doing wasn’t the right thing to do, he couldn’t stop when he realized they took away both his physical and mental pain. He didn’t think about anything traumatic anymore. He lived his life day to day and didn’t think about the past anymore. When he overdosed, however, he realized he needed to stop. Nelson has now been clean from opiates for 10 years. Although he took opiates so he didn’t have to think or deal with his trauma, he said, once he became sober all of his mental health issues and trauma were still present. It came back at once instead of having to tackle it incrementally over time.

E D U C AT I O N Local woman provides pathway to help area school teachers Teachers looking to stock their classrooms can look no further. Having been inspired by another local community school district, local realtor Brittany Smyth created a social media group to help Culpeper County teachers fill their classrooms with teaching necessities as well as to provide support and encouragement throughout the school year. “I had been wanting to find an approach to help our teachers in a big way that extends beyond what I could ever do myself,” Smyth said. “Although getting much needed supplies into the classroom is the main goal, creating this online space is about much more than that. My hope is that this group will be a place where everyone can come for support, advice and encouragement throughout the school year.” Smyth, who has a 5-year-old entering kindergarten, said starting the group was inspired by two things: years of asking teacher friends how people could truly help them and reading an interview about another county in Virginia starting the same kind of group. “Having only been around since June 29, this group has taken off and

Marisela Rumberg is dwarfed by the large wall she’s tasked with painting, but that doesn’t stop her from taking on the challenge. “I love it,” she said. “I want to do more.” Rumberg, who is originally from Mexico but now living in Fairfax, was commissioned for her first large-scale mural just recently following a quilting workshop retreat she taught. Being a zentangle teacher since 2016, Rumberg always invites people to hire her to paint a mural on a white car or wall whenever she teaches a class or attends a lecture. Zentangle is an abstract art created by a collection of patterns. It is typically done in black and white as a way to destress and reduce anxiety. After prompting students during her recent class via a contract with the Virginia Consortium of Quilters, student and West Locust Street building owner Mary Grogan took her up on the offer. Grogan was so motivated about the art piece, Rumberg recalled, the

pair drove by to see the building together the day the retreat ended to envision what the wall would look like. After traveling back home, Rumberg began to sketch out her abstract idea for the wall and ran it by Grogan, who gave Rumberg the majority of the creative control. The design includes swirls, three-sided shapes and even a feather. The building, which is adjacent to Culpeper Town Hall, must be scaled using a lift. On her first day of the job, Rumberg got a quick lesson on how to move herself up and down. Then she was off to the races. On the days she paints, Rumberg drives an hour back and forth only to work until she’s “exhausted.” Painting days last upwards of eight hours in the direct sunlight and heat. Rumberg will be back to painting on July 23 and will be painting for another week. She is unsure how much longer after that she’ll need to complete it. “It is a lot of work, but I’m liking

A Culpeper County Public Schools choir teacher was arrested on July 12 for reportedly providing a cell phone and requesting nude
photographs of a 16-year-old male. Craig Alexander Smith, 47, of Culpeper, was arrested for use of communication systems to facilitate certain offenses involving children. As a child, she remembered sketching pictures of houses and interior rooms, dreaming of designing her own home. Following a brief interest in perhaps changing careers to become a realtor, Taylor decided to combine her two passions into providing a niche service. “I think I’ve always had a skill there,” she said. “I just didn’t ever use it.” In March, she launched DLT Artwork by posting on social media, looking for clients. She wanted to offer them more than just a pen and paper drawing though. Taylor drew in help from a friend who taught her watercolor painting. “Watercolor was really hard,” she said. “It was a huge challenge. It’s like something woke up inside me and I wanted to figure it out.” After the post went up, she got 10 orders overnight. “It's overwhelming and beautiful,” she said. “It makes me feel very honored and humble that people
are willing to trust me with these gifts. Most of the requests are for gifts to others of childhood homes, first homes and even homes that may have been destroyed. Culpeper Little League Softball 10-12U traveled to Bridgewater, Virginia during the weekend of July 16 in order to compete in Allstars games. On day one, the team fell to Chesterfield with a score of 15-0. On day two, the team fell again to Strasburg with a score of 9-0. On day 3, however, the team prevailed over York County with a score of 11-10. Finally, I have finally met another cat my own age and gender and upbringing. A kindred soul. It’s not easy to find such a match when you are 13 years old in cat years and 70+ in human years. Let me introduce my new friend Glow. Yes, her name is Glow, because even as a tiny kitten she was so stark white, her humans said she “glowed.” She looked like a princess from a faraway kingdom, a kingdom that had no dirt to mar her purity. One day, she just showed up at her human’s house and asked for lodging. Nothing fancy, just a place to sleep for the night. And food. Like most kittens, potty training wasn’t an issue. She did the natural things naturally. There was a German Shepherd on the premises, and Glow sniffed him out, then climbed on his back and napped. He either didn’t mind, or didn’t know what to do with her. He could have had her for breakfast but didn’t. Before long they were inseparable. Oftentimes, she spent the night cuddled up with him. Then the inevitable happened. His long legs gave out and he passed over the Rainbow Bridge, so to speak. Glow went into deep mourning. No black veil, but a dark spirit. She has not forgotten her big friend. Two playful pups came to take his place, but Glow wasn’t in the mood for substitutes. She sulked, she

It’s been awhile and I almost forgot Paz. She was one of my earlier cat friends who lived to the age of fourteen. She was rescued from a storm sewer at five weeks with crusted eyelids and a bad case of pneumonia. A friendly, but expensive, Vet saved her life. Then her human and a battalion of family dogs, raised her to adulthood and encouraged her creativity streak. Her favorite trick was to rise at the crack of dawn and help her human with his office work. She thought this meant walking the computer keyboard and blocking his view. When he protested, she slid into the “in basket” on his desk and purred happy songs. He was bewitched.
To relieve boredom in the afternoons, Paz taught herself ice hockey, using an ice cube as her puck. She batted it all over the house, confident she was a great athlete destined for the Olympics. In the winter months, she parked her furry little bottom on one of the floor registers or hung out in front of the wood stove. Her front paws were usually crossed, although none of us knew exactly what that meant. We still don’t, as she took the secret with her. Next time I’ll tell you about Marley, who is a d-o-g, but nevertheless charming. Until then, Purrfectly yours, Cally Cally Funny feline Cally gives insight into her life as a cat.
Regular worming of cats and dogs is vital to maintaining both their health and yours. Worms (and parasites) can affect your animal’s skin, digestive tract, heart and almost any organ! Worms can very easily pass from pets to humans and can make you both very ill. Worms and parasites can cause pets to have pot bellies, upset stomachs, frequent vomiting, blocked bowels and rapid weight loss. If left untreated, worm infestation can be dangerous, even fatal. It could progress to symptoms like dehydration, anemia, cough/ pneumonia, lethargy, severe skin infections, blindness, seizures and sudden death. A few of the common ways of transferal include playing in sandboxes where pets have defecated, walking barefoot

through contaminated soil and gardening in soil without wearing gloves. Preventative measures always trump curing protocol. To minimize your exposure to contaminated feces; wash hands frequently, pick up pet poop on your lawn and garden, clean litter boxes frequently and once a month, empty and scrub clean the litter box. Treating your pets with overthe-counter remedies or natural remedies for worms (and parasites) is not recommended. You do not know if it will be effective or even safe. Dosage according to species, age and weight are critical. Treatment could be topical, oral or by injection, depending on the worm or parasite. There are many kinds of worms and parasites, and no one wormer takes care of all, therefore your vet requests a stool

PATH Recreation & Fitness Center hosting grand opening PATH Recreation & Fitness Center will host a grand opening of its new facility on July 29-30. Located at 19002 Crossroad Parkway, the new center will open its doors to the community to see the new construction, which includes two full-size, multi-sport courts lined for basketball, volleyball and pickleball, batting cages, a multi-sport simulator and activity room. Celebrations will run from 10-4 p.m. on both days. Attendees can try a plethora of different sports as well as fitness classes. “The grand opening activities will give visitors a sampling of the many program that will be offered at PRFC," said the new facility's director Tracie Massey. "We’ve asked lots of kids and adults to share their 'wish lists' for activities and we look forward to putting together a schedule that offers something for everyone." Activities held at the PATH Recreation & Fitness Center can be enjoyed by purchasing a day pass, enrolling in a specific program or activity, or through a month-to-month or annual

A trial to test our country’s quality, character BY
Trial: a formal examination of evidence before a judge, and typically before a jury, in order to decide guilt in a case of criminal or civil proceedings. Half of America has been watching TV this summer: not CSI, or American Idol; not your average reality TV show such as The Bachelorette, but the 2022 installment of The Trial of the Century (or at least the summer.) No, Judge Judy isn't presiding and nor is Judge Matthis - the American People (and History, however we choose to spin it) will render a verdict. These are the facts of the case, though I know that the word facts has become quite a convoluted and relative term. We know that on January 6, 2021, domestic insurgents overran the Capitol building. In the process destroying property, disrupting governmental functions, threatening duly elected officials, and ultimately, costing people their lives. We know that there was communication between those who

were in the former president's inner circle and militant anti-government groups such as the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers. We know that these protesters were armed, coordinated and ready for rioting. We know that the former president and his advisors knew full well that the legitimacy of the election had been upheld in the courts and had been fully vetted by the Justice Department and Homeland Security and yet, the former president and his allies continued through false messaging to take money from their followers and foment the collective rage of those who'd hoped for his reelection. We know that at its core, that these events were a trial run at a military coup to overthrow the very democracy of this country, and that the former president has no regard for the votes of the people (as he would contend) but cares only about perpetuating his own power at the expense of the American people. What does the court say? Guilty
or Innocent? Now I know what some would say, "This isn't a real trial.” But isn't it? While this TV show may not pass the litmus test of a trial aforementioned at the onset of my observation, it does meet the alternative definition of trial: a test of the performance, qualities, or suitability of someone or something. This is a test. This is a test to determine the quality and character of our nation. This is a test to show how we really operate and how we really perform under pressure. This test will determine the true sustainability of this experiment in democracy. We will look back at this moment, and we will be able to pinpoint our trajectory in any given direction based on what we do now. Our party affiliations are irrelevant at this point. Who you may have voted for (or wanted to win) is irrelevant at this point. Race, religious affiliation, gender, or sexual orientation isn't the issue at hand today. The issue at hand is whether America does what's on Her paper (the Constitution and/
or any of Her other codified sacred documents,) or whether America does what is politically and economically expedient at the moment, i.e. what is in Her best interest right now. My unfortunate experience with America (as a racialized Black man of distant African descent) is that She doesn't always comport Herself in a manner consistent with her Creed. I still have hope however, that She will; I believe that there are enough of us collectively who strive to do better who can actually make America better, who can actually make America great(er.) I guess we'll all have to sit back, watch, and see. I hope we don't sit back too long however, as passivity leaves the door open for future calamity. Choosing a new read BY
For many years, my favorite genre of reading was dystopian fiction. Primarily end of the world as we know it novels. Early in these books life would start out detailing the characters normal everyday life, which would quickly be sent into chaos due a huge, often global catastrophe. The catastrophe could be earth being struck by an asteroid, global flooding, volcano eruptions or earthquakes with world-wide affect. Perhaps the moon broke into pieces or there was a global virus outbreak. I found how people managed

to survive these catastrophes fascinating. I particularly enjoyed books written by Neal Stephenson, Justin Cronin, Benjamin Percy and others. One of the side-effects, particularly at the height of our current coronavirus pandemic was my sudden loss of reading appetite for dystopian fiction of the postapocalyptic variety. What to do? Being a notoriously picky reader it was not easy. I went back to some old standbys. I was very much into fantasy novels when young. I found that my favorite book
series from my early days, “Wizard of Earth Sea” series by Ursula K. Le Guin. I discovered this book series had continued on with three more books I had not known about. I enjoyed revisiting and finishing this series. I discovered Nora Roberts had written two new fantasy series, “The Dragon Heart Legacy” and “The Chronicles of the One.” I now enjoy just picking up a book with an interesting title. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t. The beauty of the public library is the free books. If I pick the

Spanberger is my choice In recent weeks, I have been reflecting on the state of American politics – where we’ve been and where we’re headed. I look around at our young people today and wonder what they think about all the angry talk and arm-waving — and if they will find a way to try to make a difference on behalf of their own generation. Will they choose somebody who

sees the good in people and wants to be part of solutions or somebody who is threatened by people who are not just like him or her? Do they hear political candidates who talk a lot about personal freedom and our Founding Fathers but want to limit the kind of people for whom those freedoms are reserved? We need to elect people who understand that worldwide problems like serious
inflation are extremely challenging but if we want to be successful, we need to begin by having civilized conversations with one another. Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger (D-VA-7) has been having those civilized conversations with her constituents since coming to Congress and, for more than a year, has pushed for legislative solutions to lower the cost of food and fuel.
She has fought to level the playing field for everyday Americans.. She doesn’t curse the darkness or assign blame. She is consistent in her approach to representing all people. For these reasons, and more, I will be voting for Congresswoman Spanberger this fall – and I hope you will join me. Joseph Hatajik
