Psyche Healing Center

Self-esteem has a significant role for individuals’ happiness and success. It is our overall opinion of ourselves, which effects feeling and behavior. In general, different factors determine individuals’ self-esteem such as relationships with others, ambition, expectations, appearances, and personal performance. It is essential to consider individuals’ self-esteem and deal with low self-esteem since it has had adverse effects on people. For instance, negative perceptions of one’s appearances have forced people to take drastic measures to change their looks. In extreme cases, negative perceptions about oneself have driven people to commit suicide. Indeed, self-esteem affects individuals of all age groups; however, it has a higher impact on people aged between 15 and 30 years. According to research, issues of self-esteem increase during the adolescent period and slow when one reaches adulthood. Many adolescents are affected by low self-esteem since at this stage they pay more attention to the views of others. Importantly, they are affected by social media, which increases comparison between users. Effects of low self-esteem on this age bracket include suicide, drug and substance abuse, depression, anxiety, reduction in quality of life, and others. Fortunately, it is possible to improve an individual’s self-esteem and save him/her from a lifetime of negative feelings. Thus, the focus of my thesis topic is self-esteem, and I want to create a healing center where individuals with low self-esteem can access different forms of help, support, and services to improve their self-esteem.

Client

Pacific Clinics offers its services to people in more than 60 locations across California. The institution provides its patients with mental health services, substance abuse treatment, and many other services. Pacific Clinics works with patients of all genders and ages. Pacific Clinics was established in 1926, and for more than 90 years, the institution has provided outstanding mental health services to their clients. The institution has aimed to promote behavioral healthcare treatment. Pacific Clinics provides innovative community-based, culturally and linguistically appropriate programs. The mission of Pacific Clinics is the following: “Building on people’s strengths, we deliver quality behavioral and mental healthcare services. Since prevention has a vital role to decrease mental illness, Pacific clinic has put great effort to prevention. By providing clinical techniques such as anger management classes, art and music therapy sessions, the center has achieved success to prevent mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. Pacific Clinics also values the self-forth and self-esteem of its patients and believes that self-esteem improvement can be one of the best prevention methods for future mental health. However, the center lacks a place or program that offers services for patients who have low self-esteem. Therefore, the center is interested in creating a space where patients with low self-esteem can get proper services and resources.

9

The users of the “Psyche” Healing Center are young people between the age of 15 to 30. The center will serve this specific age range because low self-esteem has huge effect on this group compared to other ages. Low self-esteem in these ages may result with anxiety, stress, loneliness, and depression. Research has indicated that individuals with low self-esteem have several issues with relationships, career, and education, which adversely affects on success and productivity. Many young people with low self-esteem avoid getting promotions in their job because they do not believe in their abilities. Even though some of them have a high education, they avoid getting a proper job related to their education thinking they are not good enough or do not have the proper ability, skills, or knowledge to get proper job. Some of them neglect their feelings, put themselves in a low status, and allow others to misuse them in their job or relationship. In addition, low self-esteem among young people may increase vulnerability of alcohol and drug abuse. Furthermore, this age shapes the level of selfesteem in old age, and developing low self-esteem at this age may lead to mental and health issues in the long-run. On the contrary, high self- esteem means that an individual has a balanced and accurate view of their value and worth. To achieve healthy self-esteem, people should learn to accept and respect themselves and believe in their power, ability, and self. A positive self- esteem makes individuals’ assertive and resilient. power, ability, and self. A positive self- esteem makes individuals’ assertive and resilient.

Psyche will have a reading center for members. The purpose of this is to enhance member’s self esteem in two ways. First, based on studies, people who have a great experience reading books, have higher self-esteem in comparison to others. For instance, in one study researchers indicate that readers are 10% more likely to report good self-esteem than non-readers, and those who read for just 30 minutes a week are 18% more likely to report higher self-esteem. It seems that knowledge may increase confidence among readers. Second, the reading center can provide various books, articles, and research about self-esteem. By accessing these resources members can find out that they are not alone, and that others suffer with low self-esteem, or are willing to help; this will help members to feel confident to work on their self-esteem. In addition, readers can learn many techniques related to improving self-esteem by reading these articles and books. By applying the techniques, the members can enhance their self-esteem.

Program Research

Psyche will provide Horticulture therapy for members. Some researchers show amazing physiological effects of horticulture therapy on patients with depression, stress disorder, and anxiety since exposure to green spaces decrease the levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. People with low self-esteem also suffer from depression, anxiety, and stress disorder. Horticulture therapy can decrease their mental issues, which eventually affects their self-esteem. Working with plants is less intimidating and challenging, thus this therapy helps people to escape from their thoughts, stress, as well as other people’s judgments. In addition, levels of dopamine, the hormones that makes one feel good, goes up when people are gardening. Since people with low self-esteem face a lot of stress, working with plants may decrease the level of stress. Also, low-self-esteem leads to anger and negative energy for patients, having a close connection with nature can create energy flow for patients by releasing their negative energy and instead absorbing

positive energy..

17

Yoga and meditation will be one of the important parts of Psyche center. Several studies indicate that yoga and meditation have significant impact on self-confidence and self-esteem. Yoga poses and breathing slowly allow a person to concentrate on self. As the practitioner moves through yoga, he/she begins to achieve, which builds self-confidence and self-esteem. In addition, rhythmic breathing helps the body relax and reduces nerves, so if a person feels nervous due to lack of confidence in certain social situations, they can take a moment to take a few deep breaths and regain balance to help deal with the situation. As a result, meditation or yoga-practicing enhance self-esteem. People who do yoga learn that each of us is different and each of us has our own unique gifts. Thus, yoga lets the practitioner be comfortable in their body and mind which positively affects on self-esteem.

Program Research

Psychotherapy, which is known as one of the best approaches for improving self-esteem, will be provided in Psyche Center. By providing various psychotherapy methods such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), the center will assist members to change their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The therapy focuses on thinking errors, which affects adversely feeling and behavior. Since most people with low-self-esteem have negative thoughts and feelings about themselves, CBT helps members to realize their wrong assumptions and thoughts about self, and replaces them with rational thoughts, and instead get positive feelings about themselves. People with low self-esteem have cognitive distortions such as jumping to conclusions, black and white thinking, and labeling which leads them to have incorrect thoughts about their abilities and self. All psychotherapy methods help members to discover these distorted thinking patterns. Then, patients learn to think and evaluate things correctly which ultimately effects their feelings, behavior, as well as self-esteem.

19

Beside individual psychotherapy, Psyche

Center also provides Group

therapy. The center will dedicate proper room for group therapy where one or more therapists work with several people with low self-esteem at the same time. Group therapy is a great therapeutic approach for improving self-esteem because not only do members get help from professional therapists, they also get support from other patients. In addition, during group therapy, members with low self-esteem improve their communication and socialization skills. They learn how to express their feelings, thoughts and issues related to lowself-esteem. In addition, group therapy helps participants to develop self-awareness by listening to others with similar challenges. Furthermore, people with low-self-esteem can get support from group and realize that they are not alone suffering from low self-esteem, find new friends, as well as realize new skills and techniques to improve self-esteem.

Program Research

Art class is another part of Psyche Center. Art class can be beneficial for people with low- elf-esteem in various ways. First, art class is place where people can create new things or images. When a person creates an image or art piece, he/she begins to think about their abilities. Since some people with low self-esteem have negative thoughts about their abilities, art class can be a great place for them to realize their capabilities. Secondly, focus, which plays a bigger role in art class may help members to forget about their challenges and stress during class or even after the class. Due to low self-esteem, some patients experience great pressure and stress on some days. Thus, art class would be the proper place for them to find relief from daily stress. Third, painting also can release some negative thoughts and feelings. Studies indicate that art therapy has great impact for treatment of depression and anxiety. Since people with low self-esteem suffer from depression and anxiety, art class can be beneficial for them.

21

Workouts and physical activity, which impact on self-esteem, would be provided by Psyche Center. In a study, researchers indicate that appearance is one of the key factors that affects self-esteem. Because physical activity and working out improve people’s appearances and makes them stronger, it also enhances self-esteem. Even if a person does not lose weight while exercising, he/she is likely to feel stronger and active which affects selfconfidence and self-esteem. In addition, working out and physical activities cause an increase of neurotransmitters such as dopamine, which positively impacts mood. Some people with low self-esteem have a negative mood, so working out and physical activities increases dopamine and can change their mood. Researchers conclude that workouts improve thinking because the brain gets more oxygen. Thus, these physical activities may assist members with low self-esteem to get more oxygen, and ultimately think better. .

Malibu, known for its Mediterranean climate is a beach city in the western Los Angeles County, California. There are many famous restaurants, which attract Hollywood movie stars, people in the entertainment industry, and visitors. In addition, the city has many picnic areas and activity places which brings a lot of tourists every year. Psyche Healing Center would be in Malibu because of its unique geographical situation. Malibu’s geographical setting is dramatic and unusual, a narrow strip of beach at the waterline of mountains that rise from the sea. Since there is great emphasize to nature in Psyche Center, Malibu would be the most ideal place. By going to the center, members will get proper services and treatments while they benefit from the unique environment of Malibu. The nature of Malibu may decrease stress; increase relaxed mood, and ultimately impact on the process of improving self-esteem.

Location

The building location is a two-story building, located in Malibu with a 270-degree view of rolling hills and the ocean. The building has a unique shape, an incredible view, and amazing facilities such as a garden, inground pool, in-ground spa, and tennis court. All these amenities make this property a great location of Psyche Healing Center. However, the building is a two-story building with 18000 SF on each floor and ocean view, which is perfect space for all Psyche Healing Center’s Programs.

The journey of self transformation and acceptance starts from the entrance, located on the first floor . The entry area is designed as a close and structured space, because it represents the clients negative and closed beliefs about themselves. These beliefs will change during the self awareness journey at Psyche, with help from the centers amenities and program. However, the wood element curculation, representing the caterpillar, starts from the entrance as a canopy and it extends to the inside of the welcoming area.

Entry

On the self awareness journey, the welcome area is the first space that the client visits. This is the first part of the program in which clients will experience relaxation as well as a friendly environment . Next to the reception desk , there is a donation center where people can make a donation to support the center and the help they provide with the journey of others. In the design of the entrance, the architectural wood element extends from the outside canopy and comes down from the reception desk back walls, and continues into the donation area wall all the way back and connects all spaces together, also acting as a way-finding mechanism.

Welcoming

45

Psyche healing Center calls its reception area Welcoming because it is enclosed but at the same time a calm and simple space with a natural color palette and contains furniture with soft materials to create the sense of a homey and cozy environment. Psyche wants its clients to feel welcomed and accepted from the very beginning of their self-awareness journey.

Welcoming

Group Healing Room. This space is where a group of clients with professionals gather together and talk about themselves and their issues with low self-esteem. As I mentioned earlier, group therapy is a great therapeutic approach for improving self-esteem because not only do members get help from professional therapists, but they also get support from other people going through the same journey. Yellow is the color that is used in this space, because it associates with emotion. Yellow is the color of mind and intellect and it affects self-confidence. It also represents optimism and confidence. The architectural wood element that represents the caterpillar is used on the wall and dropped ceiling.

Group Healing

49

Reading Center. This space is located on the second floor. Half of the center faces the ocean and the other half faces the forest. This space provides a variety of books and online sources to the clients of Psyche Healing Center, to improve their self-esteem. Blue is the color that is used in this space, because it is an intellectual color and represents trust, logic, communication, and efficiency. The design on the accent wall comes from the structure viewed under a microscope of a butterfly’s wings and represents the butterfly and the people in the different stages of physical and mental transformation.

Reading Center

The View of the reading center entrance faces the ocean. The architectural wood element that represents the caterpillar is used on the wall behind the information desk. It combines with the design element structure of the butterfly wings. Behind the wood wall, is the reading center’s online sources area.

Reading Center

53

Art Therapy Room. This space is where people can express their emotions and feelings by drawing or painting. Orange is the color that is used in this space. It blends the physical (red) and emotional (yellow) creating a sense of comfort and it boosts creativity. The architectural wood element that represents the caterpillar is used on the wall and it wraps around the room. The butterfly wings structure element is used as a design on the skylight glass.

Art Room

Indoor garden for Horticulture therapy. This is an open space to the hallway and it has access to the main outdoor garden located behind the building . The architectural wood element that represents the caterpillar is used on the ceiling with a nice skylight beside it. The butterfly wings structure element is used as the gardens space planning. This is a place where clients can garden, relax and enjoy the positive energy of the environment. Green is the color of this space, because it provides balance and it represents harmony, nature, and restoration.

Indoor Garden

57

Physical Club. This space is located on the second floor with the forest view with access to the indoor garden. It is a perfect refreshing space with a beautiful view. Red is the color of the space, because it is a physical and energetic color. It represents courage, strength, and excitement. The architectural wood element that represents the caterpillar is used on the floor and it creates a platform for exercise. The butterfly wings structure element is used as a wall covering and floor carpet pattern.

Physical Club

Silent room. This space is the self awareness journey destination room. It is a calm and relaxing area with lots of windows viewing the ocean. Purple is the color for this space, because it is associated with spirituality and it means becoming one with the spirit. The architectural wood element that represents the caterpillar is used on the floor and it extends all the way back to the mediation area where it is surrounded by water walls. The butterfly wings structure element is used as a Skylight and it starts from the entrance of the silent room and goes all the way back and wraps around the top of the meditation island.

Silent Room
