RIGGING LESS THAN $300,000
Facing many unknowns, Barnhart’s engineering team used custom lifting and rigging tools to innovatively remove and replace an isophase fan.

Barnhart Crane & Rigging was awarded a project that involved the complicated removal and replacement of an isophase fan at a power plant. The removal process required disassembling the fan into four sections,

each with an unknown center of gravity, while the replacement consisted of three sections with significantly offset centers of gravity. Innovation was key to the successful completion of this project.
The original fan was located in the turbine building and had to be extracted through an opening in the wall provided by the plant. The opening led into the plant’s switchyard.
To ensure safety, daily Job Hazard Analyses were conducted by the Barnhart team to identify potential risks and involve crew members in proactive hazard management. Standard operating procedures were followed for all equipment used, and a 100-hour safety standdown was implemented to reinforce awareness of hazards, particularly pinch points and the dangers of working around suspended loads.
The Barnhart team had a lot of knowledge and experience with a project like this, and they knew immediately they would have to think outside the box.
“Innovation played a crucial role in this project,” said Barnhart’s Eric Cantrell. “This was the perfect job to use the company’s custom Tipstick tool. Our engineers made modifications to an existing Barnhart 27K Tipstick to accommodate the fan sections, minimizing the required headroom.”
The project required ingenuity, utilizing multiple unconventional rigging and lifting devices, including the Barnhart counterweight cantilever system, known as the MOCCS; the custom Barnhart 27K Tipstick; a 75-ton Lift Systems Mobilift, a 100-ton slide and multi-lift jacks to facilitate both removal and installation.
Engineering support was extensive, including the development of engineered lift plans, jack and slide layouts and custom fabrication solutions to ensure a precise and secure execution. The work took place over a span of three days, from September 11 to September 13, 2024, and was safely executed on time without a hitch.
RIGGING $300,000 TO $1 MILLION
MOUNTAIN CRANE SERVICE
In removing and replacing a refractory-lined CO line, the Mountain Crane Service team developed an innovative rigging solution that was safe and efficient.
Mountain Crane Service applied its experience and know-how to a project that involved the removal and replacement of a 36 to 42-inch refractory-lined CO line within a highly time-sensitive framework.

One of the key challenges of the project was the lack of overhead clearance for a crane to pick the line, coupled with obstructions below, that prevented the use of a jack-and-slide operation. To overcome these constraints, the Mountain

Crane Service engineered a solution for replacing a refractory-lined CO line by using SPMTs and a stinger clamp system, improving efficiency and safety at elevated heights.
Service team engineered an innovative solution, utilizing a selfpropelled modular transporter (SPMT) and a stinger clamp system.
This approach ensured enhanced efficiency and provided safer working conditions at elevated heights, addressing the overall challenges of the positioning of the CO line. The stinger clamp system

was specifically designed to handle the limitations posed by the lack of clearance and obstructions. An assist crane was brought in for the offloading of the CO line, allowing for a smooth and secure operation.
Mountain Crane’s in-house engineering team, in close collaboration with the field team, designed and executed the rigging plan, eliminating the need for traditional bull rigging methods.
“Remarkably, the Mountain Crane Service team engineered and mobilized the necessary equipment in under one month, a feat that speaks to our expertise and agility,” said Mountain Crane Service’s Tyler Poulsen.
The project was completed successfully, with the client expressing appreciation for the timely, safe and efficient execution of the work, according to Mountain Crane’s Billy Meade.
According to Billings Plant Manager Par Pacific, “Mountain Crane went above and beyond to develop an innovative rigging solution, demonstrating creativity and precision to safely execute the removal and installation of a complex project.” ■
Bragg Companies accomplished an unprecedented feat installing the Endeavour in the blast-off configuration.
In a historic job, Bragg Companies provided engineering, civil improvements, rigging, equipment and labor to relocate the Space Shuttle Endeavour, two solid rocket boosters and External Tank-94 (ET-94) from storage to the new Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center for their “Go for Stack” exhibit.
When moving priceless aerospace relics, the pressure is intense. The Bragg team engineered, 3D printed, fabricated and mounted key components without access to vital NASA data from the Shuttle program, including lifting lugs, tailing lugs and spreader bar bolster frames for the external tanks, as well as jacking frames and slings for the Endeavour.
Spec sheets for components were not necessarily accurate, requiring precise field verification. ET-94 measured 154 feet long, 27 feet 6 inches in diameter and weighed 67,000 pounds. Endeavour stood 59 feet
tall, 122 feet long, had a 78-foot wingspan and weighed 176,000 pounds.
At a crowded jobsite shared with an elementary school, stadiums and museums, vendors operated within a single tree-lined entrance with limited build and breakout areas. Elevation changes and high center-of-gravity moves added complexity. To keep the museum open, much of the work was done at night.
“The upending of these priceless space shuttle articles had never been attempted outside of a NASA-controlled indoor facility,” explained Justin Lambert of Bragg Companies. “Other challenges

included wind variations, underground utilities, ground pressures, night-time work and 24/7 media coverage. Over 1,500 engineering hours and five planning methods were submitted to the client.”
Supporting the project were a Liebherr LR1750, Liebherr LTM1400, Enerpac 110ton Cube Jack System, 20 lines of Goldhofer SPMT and a 200-ton J&R Power Rotator.
Moving and installing ET-94 was a major feat. After it was jacked up, it was transported on a 20-line SPMT fitted with custom jacking frames. Clearances were tight as ET-94 was guided down State Street to the lift area. The LR1750 and LTM1400, along with the Power Rotator, upended and flew ET-94 into the display building, carefully lowering it through a 130-foot scaffold with inches to spare. The main crane had a boom height of 407 feet and a 176-foot radius. ET-94’s delicate foam exterior required extreme caution.

When moving priceless relics, the pressure is intense. Bragg Companies relocated and installed the Endeavour Space Shuttle, two solid rocket boosters and the external tank (ET-94) from storage to the new S amuel Oschin Air and Space Center.
For the Shuttle move, the Pavilion’s back wall was removed and a 109-footlong, 30-foot-wide ramp was built to bridge a 42-inch elevation change. Geotech surveys, civil work, plating and matting – including 108 road plates and eight crane mats –prepared the surface for operations.
The Endeavour was disconnected from its seismic isolators using the Cube Jack System. It was lifted onto reconfigured jacking frames and moved on the SPMT. The Cube Jack was reintroduced to lift it 12 feet to remove the jacking frames and install bolster towers with custom lashing. It was maneuvered down a slope, around a corner and over a building onto State Street, with as little as 8 inches of clearance.
Late one night, the Endeavour was connected to a vertical sling and upended using the LTM1400 and LR1750. The gross load was 259,600 pounds at a 151foot radius. Endeavour was slowly lowered into the building and hard mated to the ET-94 for final assembly.
Safety was paramount. Bragg conducted daily Task Hazard Analyses and ensured PPE, equipment inspections, certifications and client-required safety protocols were fully enforced.

Barnhart developed two new rigging tools, the Barnhart Lifting Table and Barnhart Jack Masters, and greatly enhanced the schedule and safety at a semiconductor facility construction site supporting the installation of 150 MEP modules.
RIGGING OVER $3 MILLION

When installing 150 MEP modules the Barnhart team asked a critical question: Is there a more efficient way to do this?
In January of 2023, Barnhart was asked if it could support the installation of 150 MEP modules at a semiconductor facility construction site. The customer had planned to fabricate 20 by 20-foot modules on site, and then transport and install them one by one.
While the Barnhart team began developing solutions for this process, they asked the question: Is there a more efficient way to accomplish this?
Investigating further, the Barnhart team learned that this method would cause the steel and pipe installer to make hundreds and hundreds of field welds at a height of almost 30 feet off the ground. Some of the pipes were as large as 64 inches in diameter. After further discussion, the Barnhart team learned that if there was a way to fabricate large areas of the MEP steel and pipe in the building and then lift it to the ceiling, this would allow for the reduction in a significant amount of
manpower and working at height. It would also allow for the fabricator to install the longest runs of pipe possible to reduce the number of field welds required.
The solution was the development of Barnhart Lift Tables (LT50s) and Jack Masters. The fabrication and implementation of these new tools and techniques were the result of thinking through an entirely new method that would involve lifting these large footprints of pipe and steel, some weighing as much as 250,000 pounds, from grade to a height of 26 feet.
The challenge was developing a solution that was versatile enough to be modified for any footprint needing to be lifted, which meant different weights, different centers of gravities and different obstructions.
“The Barnhart Lift Tables and Jack Masters gave us the versatility we needed to accomplish this extremely tall order,” said Barnhart’s Compton Latture. “Barnhart’s engineering team collaborated with the piping and steel contractor to analyze each layout to determine weight, center of gravity support points and obstructions.”
Each lift arrangement was unique and required meticulous attention to detail to
ensure operation was done appropriately. Once the customer confirmed that a module was ready for lift, Barnhart would first install Jack Masters to lift the module from grade to a height of approximately 40 inches.
Once at height and set to safety jack stands, the Lift Tables would be moved into position. The lift tables were then utilized for the main lifting operation of the modules. In a single stroke, the lift tables would lift a module from a collapsed height of 40 inches up to approximately 26 feet in the air, stopping and sideshifting as needed to avoid obstacles until the module came to its final height for securement.
Due to the lift table’s holding valves, crews were able to work at height to make up the hundreds of bolted connections to securement plates at the ceiling. This unique solution made module fabrication easier. The number of welders and scaffolding required was drastically reduced.
This solution also increased safety by reducing the number of manhours that would have been spent working and welding at height. Barnhart’s engineering prowess saved three months on the project schedule, completed 41 MEP module area lifts, and brought two brand new tools to market. ■
Through expert planning and execution, QSL Transport moved 51 enormous piping rack modules.
QSL Transport hauled 51 oversized piping rack modules
13.6 miles in an operation that had to be conducted at nighttime and represented several unparalleled challenges due to the winter season, the extreme dimensions of the modules and a narrow route that presented huge challenges. The largest modules measured 148 by 20 by 21 feet.
Due to 975 low power lines, the most direct route was not viable. Thus, the team engineered a custom route through narrow country roads. The trailer configuration had to be adjusted, tight turns had to be navigated, electrical poles replaced, and roads reinforced.
“The route required extensive
modifications to accommodate the oversized loads weighing as much as 220,000 pounds,” said QSL Transport’s Emeric Doutriaux. “This included navigating 150 power lines that required adjustments, relocating 10 electrical poles, reinforcing roads with steel plates to support the extreme weight and executing controlled reverse driving maneuvers over hundreds of meters to navigate tight turns.”
The execution of this project required six months of rigorous preparation. A comprehensive Traffic Management Plan (TMP) was developed to coordinate 15 full road closures while ensuring minimal disruption. Hundreds of man-hours were dedicated to stakeholder coordination, including meetings with city councils, engineering firms and transport specialists to ensure a smooth operation.

The QSL Transport team faced immense challenges posed by the terrain, weather and route logistics. Every module was delivered safely, efficiently and without incident.

The modules were of an immense scale, with the largest module measuring 75.4 feet by 17.8 feet by 15.5 feet and the heaviest module weighing 151,214 pounds. The custom-configured multiaxle trailers were designed to comply with strict municipal axle weight restrictions of 10,000 pounds per axle.
The transport team also had to manage controlled reverse driving maneuvers to accommodate the oversized loads. This project required six months of thorough preparation before execution. The first task was securing regulatory approvals from the municipal council, engineering assessments to strengthen certain road sections with steel plates and partnering with Hydro Québec to prevent power outages.
The Traffic Management Plan was critical to the success of the project. Separate teams for loading and transport were organized since the cargo had to be loaded on the same day as the nighttime journey. A speed limit of 6 mph was enforced, and white lighting systems were installed for better visibility. Load runners cleared power lines, and real-time tracking systems enabled emergency coordination.
The QSL Transport team worked with Hydro-Québec to relocate 10 electrical poles.
From October to December 2024, 40 oversized piping rack modules were transported at night, twice a week for seven weeks. Each convoy, consisting of three trucks, was supported by a team of safety personnel, including two police escorts, six private road escorts and six bucket trucks to lift overhead power lines.
“Through precise engineering, strategic coordination and an unwavering commitment to safety, we successfully delivered all 51 piping rack modules on time and without any negative impact on employees, the community or the environment,” said Doutriaux. “This project stands as a testament to our expertise in handling complex logistics, reinforcing our reputation for executing high-stakes, oversized cargo transport with excellence.”
HAULING 160,000 TO 500,000 POUNDS NET
Removing four Wartsilla engines required creative hauling, including a floating crane, SPMTs and a 372-foot GS800 combination – a record for Washington and Barnhart.

Barnhart was contacted to remove four Wartsilla engines from a storage facility and move them to a new location. In order to complete the project, the Barnhart Crane & Rigging team utilized multiple lines of SPMT due to pier loading concerns, a 500-ton slide and gantry to remove the engines from the buildings and stage dock side.
Since no over-the-road or rail routes were available, Barnhart devised a plan to contract a floating crane to load and transport to Port of Olympia that they again received via SPMT to set to staging.
During this entire process Barnhart executed on a longshore controlled site under very difficult operating conditions.
Barnhart designed and fabricated specialized shipping frames that were installed to aid in height and weight restrictions as dictated by WSDOT. These were held in place with ALRS links and earrings to achieve final ride height.
For the transport Barnhart permitted an 11 by 11 GS800 combination that was over 372-feet long. At the time, this is reportedly the longest permitted load ever in the

state of Washington, according to state sources. This was also the longest load combination that any Barnhart team has ever performed.
The four engines measured 34 feet 2 inches long by 13 feet 5 inches wide by 14 feet 10 inches tall. They weighed approximately 392,600 pounds each.

“The team worked with city, state and county authorities to locate a route of about 45 miles though the I-5 Corridor to their final location in Centralia Washington,” said Barnhart’s Olof Anderson. “At first there were major concerns with leaving the Port of Olympia but because of the expertise and tenure of the Barnhart LAX team they came up with a plan to back the trailer out of the port nearly 1.5 miles, remove a single tree and work though a residential area until reaching I-5.”
The LAX team completed the four round trip moves in less than a month without any incidents, Anderson said. ■
Edwards Moving & Rigging successfully completed the complex transport of four Class 7 radioactive components from Florida to a disposal site in Texas. This multimodal project involved meticulous planning, innovative engineering and precise coordination across several state agencies. The journey began with a barge transport from Florida to Texas, followed by a 991.5mile road haul utilizing Goldhofer THP-SL with hybrid dollies, and the Faktor 5 high girder bridge. Overcoming challenges such as 150-plus bridge crossings, contraflow movements and infrastructure modifications, the Edwards team demonstrated its expertise in handling oversized, hazardous loads.
Extreme planning
In Florida, the components were loaded onto a deck barge using a 3-file, 12-line Goldhofer PST. They arrived at Rockport Terminal, Texas and were prepared for the over the road transport, which required nine months of planning. This phase involved extensive coordination with the Texas Department of Transportation and various transportation districts, as well

as third-party bridge engineering for 158 bridges.
The components were offloaded using the Roll-On/Roll-Off method. A Faktor 5 high girder bridge combination conveyance was used, spreading the weight over 384 tires, powered by Kenworth C500 Prime Movers and a Goldhofer AD-Drive.
“Rigorous safety measures were implemented, including health and safety protocols, equipment safety and securing loads for over-the-road standards for Class 7 hazardous materials,” said Edwards’ Jennifer Schuster. “The 30-day road transport covered 991.5 miles, with

extensive planning ensuring no damage to infrastructure or disruption to the public.”
The components were offloaded at the disposal site using a 3-file, 12-line Goldhofer trailer and a 900-ton gantry system, marking the completion of the project.
Of the 158 bridges navigated, dollies were used on 150 of them and pier-to-pier jumps were performed on three bridges. The team also managed two contraflow movements, temporarily closing sections of the interstate and moving in the opposite direction to accommodate the oversized load. At one point, a section of Interstate 20 was shut down to allow the transport to proceed. This project highlights Edwards commitment to safety, innovation, and industry leadership in heavy transport and rigging. ■
One of the most notable engineering challenges for the Edwards team involved the securement of large radioactive components using the Goldhofer Faktor 5 high girder bridge system. With no traditional lashing points, Edwards’ engineering team devised a solution using synthetic chains to wrap and secure the cargo.

Three world records were set in the launch of the B212-Charybdis vessel.
Fagioli expertly planned and executed the loadout of the B212-Charybdis Offshore Wind Turbine Installation jack-up vessel built by Seatrium Amfels in Brownsville, Texas. The project involved 880 axles of SPMT, 28 power packs, three semi-submersible barges, four spacer barges and up to 10 tugboats.
In the process, Fagioli set three world records: largest number of axle lines under one load, heaviest weight ever moved by SPMT axle lines and heaviest load on wheels transferred onto multiple barges.
Execution required coordination with multiple international entities under tight time constraints. With barges in loadout configuration, the Port of Brownsville was shut down and Fagioli was given three days to complete the project.
“The first of its kind built at the shipyard, the vessel presented several issues, including weight and load distribution, which left the minimum amount for the support saddles,” said Fagioli’s Edoardo Ascione. “The loading dock, with its 2,000 psf maximum bearing pressure and 9-foot height above the water, combined with the vessel weight of over 51 million pounds and the center of gravity, were factored into equipment requirements. The result was 880 axle lines of SPMT in three groups. Three very large barges with sufficient buoyancy and an internal ballast system were required. But none were operating in the U.S.”
Using 880 Scheuerle SPMT axle lines, Fagioli transported the 51 million pound vessel from the port onto three semisubmersible barges from where it was launched into the water.

Sourcing the equipment
The central SPMT group with 340 axles was 150 and 115 feet away from the two side groups with 200 axles each. Ensuring communication among the 880 axles and 28 power packs was a major challenge. Several generations of equipment were used, requiring extensive vetting and compatibility testing. Long hydraulic hoses connected two groups for three-point support, enabling control from a single box.
Fagioli sourced axle lines and power packs from its U.S., European and Asian fleets, with a few rentals in the U.S. The three barges were contracted from BOA Barge in Norway. The central barge, which measured 500 by 125 by 30 feet, is among the world’s largest. The two side barges measured 407 by 105 by 26 feet each. Despite their buoyancy, crane mats were needed to manage dock height and maintain level positioning during tidal cycles. Barges were connected by spacer barges and secured by winches, mooring lines and five tugboats.
Preparations took a year, factoring in equipment readiness, weather, tides and port traffic. The loadout date shifted several times, complicating asset availability.
By loadout day, the vessel was 1,500 tons heavier but still within equipment capacity. The first step involved positioning SPMTs under the vessel, confirming load distribution, center of gravity and operation. All three hydraulic
groups measured the same weight. Once confirmed, the barges were aligned to the dock and the port was closed to maritime traffic. Alignment required 20 hours, using 30-ton winches, spacer barges, ramps and ballasting.
The vessel was then moved slowly over ramps onto the barges, with constant checks on vessel stability, SPMTs, winches, barges and tugboats. Once in position, the vessel lowered its jack-up legs into the water and transferred weight from the SPMTs to the barges. This step was challenging due to hydraulic and electronic connections spread across three moving platforms. Continuous communication ensured safety.
Once load transfer was complete, SPMTs rolled off the barges, and tugboats repositioned the barges and spacers to reopen the port’s navigational channel. The project finished well within the 72-hour window.
The vessel traveled about 1,000 feet from land to barge, all within the shipyard. Ground bearing pressure was mostly 2,000 psf, except for a soft spot that was bridged with steel ramps. The Ro-Ro ramps had to bridge an additional 12-foot gap from the jetty face.
Among the project’s key innovations were the hydraulic and electronic integration of 880 axle lines and 28 power packs from different generations moved together by a single remote control, both on land and on three separate barges.
Allegiance Crane & Equipment executed a complex reactor removal and reinstallation project at a Gulf Coast VCM plant, overcoming significant spatial, engineering and operational challenges. Tasked with lifting two 236,000-pound reactors within a highly congested, active unit, Allegiance designed a custom-engineered solution that eliminated the need for large cranes. Using a Cometto Eco 1000 self-propelled trailer, a 300-ton Hydra-Slide turntable and bespoke support structures, the team lifted, rotated and elevated each reactor in precise increments to allow critical weld repairs.
ProLift Rigging engineered and executed the removal and replacement of a 30,000pound shaker screen with an innovative solution that dramatically improved safety and efficiency. Rather than relying on traditional methods that involved major structural modifications or manual bull rigging, ProLift developed a custom Multi-Point Cantilever Lifting Frame, overcoming tight overhead clearances and complex lift path restrictions.

The move, originally designed for a 1.8-millionpound structure, required mid-project recalculations after the real weight was confirmed onsite.

CCO’s modern certification ecosystem includes real-time verification, role-specific credentials and smarter compliance. New tools and credentials transform how safety, verification, and accountability are managed across the industry.
The industry asks, CCO listens. That principle is driving a wave of modernization and digitization across construction credentials, pairing live, identity-assured verification with role-specific credentials and introducing first-ever certifications to meet real needs. Informed by continuous feedback from employers, unions, and regulators, CCO’s evolving ecosystem tightens compliance, clarifies responsibility and turns paperwork into real-time certainty. Here’s how that listening and responsiveness create safer jobsites and smarter oversight.
Qualified direction
■ A SAFER INDUSTRY BUILT ON VERIFIED SKILL. In construction and load handling, safety is the foundation of every decision. Employers, unions, and site owners need ironclad proof that each person on site is qualified for the task at hand. CCO Certification has long provided that assurance, with industry data indicating its programs help prevent an estimated 22 fatalities and 175 injuries each year. Today, CCO is expanding that impact with an integrated set of tools and rolespecific credentials designed to tighten verification, clarify responsibility, and streamline compliance. The result is a measurable improvement in safety and defensibility for employers, paired with simpler, faster documentation of qualifications.
■ WHY CERTIFICATION ALONE ISN’T ENOUGH. CCO certifications meet OSHA, state, and local requirements and align with ASME standards, which is why the benchmark across the industry. Yet real jobsites shift

constantly as projects evolve, equipment changes, and configurations vary. Beyond earning a certification, employers must verify, monitor, and document qualifications in real time. CCO’s newest offerings address those realities directly, transforming verification from a paper chase into immediate certainty and turning recordkeeping into an automated, always-current system.
■ REAL-TIME TRUST WITH MYCCO SHARE. The myCCO “Share” feature replaces uncertainty with electronic
verification that is both immediate and identity-assured. Physical cards can be forged or altered, and CCO documents multiple attempts each year by individuals trying to use fake or manipulated cards to gain employment or site access. Historically, employers relied on manual inspection and ad-hoc database lookups, a process susceptible to typographical errors, mismatched names, and delays that cost time in the field. With “Share,” certificants transmit their current certification details directly from

CCO’s evolving ecosystem tightens compliance, clarifies responsibility and turns paperwork into real time responsibility.
the myCCO portal using email, text message, WhatsApp, or a QR code. Recipients view live status through Verify CCO Online, which closes loopholes and speeds decision-making. Since February 2025, more than eight thousand users have accessed “Share,” generating over twenty-five hundred real-time shares, and the pace continues to rise month over month. “Share” also builds identity assurance into the workflow. Certificants upload a recent photo and a valid governmentissued ID to myCCO. CCO then verifies identity and displays the photo in Verify CCO Online so the person checking credentials can confirm that the individual on screen matches the individual onsite. Employers and site owners that standardize on “Share” gain a verification flow that is faster in daily operations and stronger in audits or incident reviews.
Real-time checks solve an immediate need, but many organizations still devote hours to tracking expirations across spreadsheets or performing repeated VerifyCCO searches. CertConnect, fully integrated into myCCO and going live in December 2025, replaces that burden with a single, always-current source of verification. Employers, unions, training providers, insurers, and regulatory bodies can create an organization in myCCO and assign multiple managers. Using a candidate’s unique CCO ID, managers request a connection; once the candidate approves, the organization gains live visibility into certifications, photos, and expiration dates. CertConnect keeps compliance current by design. The system will send automatic email notices when certifications are added and as expiration dates approach. It eliminates redundant tracking tools, reduces data entry errors, and centralizes a roster that updates itself the moment a certification is earned or expires. For busy safety leaders and project teams, this shift means fewer administrative loops and more attention on planning the next safe lift.
Crane assembly and disassembly is one of the most exposure-rich scopes on any project, and ambiguity around what “qualified and competent” truly entails for the person directing this work has

persisted for years. CCO’s Assembly/ Disassembly Director Certification, launching January 15, 2026, creates a clear, nationally recognized benchmark for the professionals who plan, direct, and oversee A/D operations. The timing aligns with broader regulatory momentum, including Washington State’s rule requiring certified professionals for crane A/D activities in 2026, a policy that establishes precedent others may follow. As task force chair JR Moran of Brasfield & Gorrie notes, the industry needs a dependable standard that verifies experience and competency in a highexposure area.
Because not all crane work is identical, the program offers two focused tracks—one for mobile cranes and one for tower cranes. Each track evaluates competencies that matter to its scope. Candidates demonstrate mastery of ASME B30 standards and applicable OSHA requirements, including the frameworks that distinguish qualified and competent roles. They apply manufacturer procedures and technical information to specific cranes, configurations, and tasks without being tied to a single brand. Examinations emphasize robust job planning and sequencing, clear team roles and communications, contingency planning for changing site conditions, and the realities of field leadership, including who supervises which actions and how decisions are documented. Risk recognition and control remain central; candidates show they can identify hazards, put effective mitigations in place, and maintain stop-work authority throughout operations.
Developed through CCO’s job task analysis, broad subject-matter expert participation, and psychometric oversight, the program reflects realworld dynamics and gives employers a consistent benchmark for designating A/D Directors and strengthening defensibility should incidents require later scrutiny.
OSHA’s Crane & Derricks in Construction rule frames operator qualification as a progression through training, certification, and evaluation, and it requires that evaluators be qualified. What the rule does not specify is the route to becoming qualified as an evaluator, leaving employers to set their own parameters and inviting inconsistency

CCO’s certification ecosystem offers a clear, credible path to consistent performance and a culture where every lift begins with skill and standard.
and bias. CCO’s Evaluator of Crane Operator Certification, launching in January 2026, provides a structured, nationally available, third-party accredited pathway that clarifies the evaluator role and elevates the quality of evaluations. The program offers specializations for mobile crane operator evaluators, tower crane operator evaluators, and articulating operator evaluators so participants align their expertise with the equipment they oversee. Evaluators learn to judge task-specific skills and risk recognition for real equipment and real jobs. CCO standardizes how evaluations are planned, how live performance is observed, and how records capture scope, criteria, outcomes, and authorization limits. The program defines what “qualified to evaluate” means in practice, whether the evaluator is a safety manager, an
experienced craft professional, or a third-party agent acting on behalf of an employer. Emphasis remains tightly aligned with OSHA’s focus on task performance and hazard avoidance, ensuring that authorization to operate rests on a transparent and defensible process. As task force chair John Manes explains, evaluation is not a matter of handing over controls; it demands defined competencies and a deliberate, ethical approach so the right person is in the seat when work begins. The candidate handbook will be publicly posted in October ahead of launch, there is no practical exam requirement, and successful candidates recertify every five years.
■ A
Bringing these elements together creates a straightforward roadmap. Make identity-assured, real-time verification the default by having certificants and subcontractors share credentials through myCCO “Share” and by requiring photo and ID uploads so images appear
CCO’s new “Share“ feature allows certificants to securely send real-time certification status via QR code, email, text or WhatsApp - streamlining verification and enhancing jobsite safety.
in Verify CCO Online. Centralize oversight through CertConnect by establishing an organization account in myCCO, connecting with employees through their CCO IDs, and relying on automated notifications to prevent lapses. Strengthen assembly and disassembly oversight by identifying employees for the A/D Director program and aligning procedures with the certification’s defined competencies. Remove ambiguity from operator qualification by selecting internal leaders or trusted third parties to earn the Evaluator of Crane Operator Certification and by aligning evaluations with and authorization processes with CCO’s standardized approach across all sites.

■ THE PAYOFF: FASTER IN THE FIELD, STRONGER IN REVIEW. Identityassured verification closes weak points at the site gate. Centralized, real-time tracking prevents avoidable lapses. Role-specific certifications for A/D Directors and Evaluators clarify who plans and directs complex work, who judges an operator’s readiness for a specific task, and how those decisions are communicated and recorded. With nearly three decades of leadership behind it, CCO continues to evolve the gold standard for crane-related certifications, focusing on the moments that matter most—when a certification is presented, when a certification is about to expire, when a crane is being assembled, and when an operator must prove readiness for the job in front of them.
■ GETTING READY TO LEAD WITH SAFETY AND EXCELLENCE. Organizations ready to take the next step can direct certificants to use myCCO “Share,” prepare their accounts for CertConnect at my.ccocert.org, and identify employees for the A/D Director and Evaluator of Crane Operator programs launching in January 2026. Whether the goal is building a safer jobsite or advancing a career, CCO’s modern certification ecosystem offers a clear, credible path to consistent performance and a culture where every lift begins with verified skill, clear authority and proven standards. ■

In 2025, the NCCCO Foundation advanced its mission through research, resources and outreach.
In 2025, the NCCCO Foundation focused on its core mission to provide research, educational resources, and career awareness resources to support the crane and rigging industry. These are the highlights.
Research and resources Industry professionals focused on recruitment are encouraged to read and learn from the NCCCO Foundation’s research report, “Exploring Occupations Similar to Crane Operators and Related Roles” that provided the conclusions of a job skills analysis that compared other types of common jobs with typical crane jobs to see what jobs may be well positioned with the skills to transition into a crane career, for example CDL drivers to crane operators. The final report contained comparisons of ten job roles to those in the crane industry by analyzing nine job elements such as skills, interests, and tasks. The

research report provided key takeaways and recommendations regarding the expansion of the crane career path, unexpected roles to be explored further, top job elements to train and recruit for, and opportunities for promoting career growth within the crane industry.
Additional useful educational information was shared throughout the year in a variety of ways including the annual Industry Forum in Charlotte, NC and via Zoom. Participants heard from experts on a variety of topics such as teaching basic computer skills; helping crane operators get comfortable with technology; finding employment in the crane industry; and improving safety by utilizing tools and processes of
verification and reporting. The Industry Forum sessions were supplemented with free webinars on safety, research, and career awareness and recruitment. Recordings of all the educational sessions from the Industry Forum and webinar series are available for free on the NCCCO Foundation’s website, www.ncccofoundation.org.
After identifying a need for resources to help people in the industry become more familiar with and understand basic computer and technology skills, the Foundation developed and launched several new tools. The new resources included PDFs linked to online

educational guides. The goal is to avoid the need for companies, unions, training providers and others who regularly work with individuals who are struggling with technology to have easy to use tools and avoid the need to create them from scratch. Topics include computer-based testing, a mouse tutorial, email basics, connecting to the internet, and more.
With the assistance of KitoCrosby, the NCCCO Foundation also coordinated with OSHA to begin providing the basic rigging classes to OSHA officials who are unfamiliar with the crane and rigging industry. Plans are underway to expand the trainings to other locations in the future.
In cooperation with the National Safety Council (NSC) the NCCCO Foundation launched two new safety resources for the industry. The “Crane Operations Jobsite Safety Controls Too” provides users with a range of safety solutions set into a hierarchy of controls for eliminating or mitigating risks including, but not limited to, technology, training, and protective equipment. The hazards and risks are based on the safety hazard research report released earlier in the year and therefore are tailored to the needs and concerns of the crane and rigging industry.
A heat stress white paper discussing the hazards of heat stress in the industry and utilizing the hierarchy of controls to rank and map out potential solutions to the often-occurring safety hazard was also published.
The Foundation also started a new

LinkedIn Crane Safety Group to share the safety resources the Foundation developed but also to engage members in meaningful sharing of resources, ideas, and questions related to crane safety. The group includes a variety of safety folks in the construction industry from insurance, general contractors, crane operators, crane manufacturers, trainers, general safety pros, etc. Anyone involved in the safety of those working in and around cranes are welcome to join.
The NCCCO Foundation continued its development of new resources to raise awareness of and appreciation for the many amazing careers in the crane and rigging industry. New documents, social media posts, and outreach materials were created and shared on the My Crane Career website for those in the industry to use in their recruitment and awareness activities. Some of the new materials were designed to appeal more to women who are underrepresented in the industry but represent a large part of the future workforce. Additional resources focused on veterans, individuals working in

other parts of the construction industry, and those who have commercial driver’s licenses were also in developing at the end of the year.
The NCCCO Foundation was excited to continue
working with the SC&RF in 2025 in support of career awareness by exhibiting at the Skills USA National Leadership and Skills Conference and the Future Farmers of America Convention to speak with teachers and students about the industry and provide hands-on experiences for the future workforce.

The NCCCO Foundation also directly supported the training and certification of several individuals entering the crane industry through the distribution of more than $100,000 in scholarships. The scholarship recipients were selected from dozens of applicants from across the U.S. to receive assistance in getting started on the pathway of a successful career in the crane and rigging industry.

SC&RA’s mission each year is to strengthen the industry through effective advocacy, engagement and education. In 2025, the Association delivered for both specialized transportation and crane & rigging members, securing exemptions, shaping legislation and elevating the industry’s voice at every level of government. From regulatory and tariff challenges to safety and infrastructure issues, SC&RA is reducing obstacles while advancing policies that protect members’ interests and promote long-term growth.
In 2025, SC&RA secured a provisional renewal of the 30-minute rest break exemption through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Effective June 17, 2025, the renewal ensured no lapse following the previous exemption and will remain in place until December 17, 2025, when SC&RA expects a full renewal of the exemption for the next five-years.
At the same time, the Association mobilized members around tariffs imposed by Executive Order 14257 on cranes, crane parts and specialized transportation equipment. Working with coalitions and attorneys in Washington, D.C., SC&RA underscored how tariffs increase costs and threaten access to critical materials. In May, SC&RA also met with senior policy representatives at the U.S. Trade Representative’s office to outline the essential role this industry plays in global construction and infrastructure.
To that end, along with the Florida Crane Owners Association, Texas Crane Owners Association, Northwest
In 2025, SC&RA continued to elevate its voice across state and federal arenas, advancing member priorities and strengthening industry standards nationwide.

Our members rely on us to push back against policies that threaten their ability to operate safely and competitively.

JOEL DANDREA, CEO
Crane Owners Association, Crane Owners Association and the Mobile Crane Operators Group, SC&RA sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick urging consideration of industry realities during trade negotiations.
State-level gains also stood out in 2025. In Florida, SB 1662 was signed by Governor Ron DeSantis on June 18, allowing cranes to travel at night. Effective July 1, the law eases congestion, improves safety and strengthens the industry’s ability to respond in emergencies. SC&RA commended the Florida Crane Owners

Association for their leadership and commitment throughout the process.
Earlier in the year, SC&RA visited Capitol Hill to meet with Rep. Tom Kean (NJ-7), discussing fraudulent and double-brokering, rail crossing safety, administration appointments and prospects for surface transportation reauthorization.
The Association also supported Texas SB 30/HB 4806 through the Lonestar Economic Alliance, a tort reform bill aimed at curbing artificially inflated medical bills that lead to nuclear verdicts. While the measure was unsuccessful, SC&RA continues to support tort reform

Environments being what they are, earlier this year, SC&RA launched a Railroad & Utilities Task Force to address the unique challenges of moving oversize/ overweight loads across rail networks and utility corridors. By engaging railroads, utility providers and logistics partners, the task force will ensure member needs are considered in industry decisions while improving efficiency, safety and competitiveness. Additionally, SC&RA is also working with law enforcement across North America to support standardized weighing procedures for overweight mobile cranes.

on the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for Heat Injury and Illness Prevention in Outdoor and Indoor Work Settings. The comments emphasized the need for flexibility and performance-based standards that address industry realities. Previous comments were submitted in response to OSHA’s “potential standard” on the same subject.
At the state level, SC&RA filed comments in both April and June with the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries regarding revisions to Chapter 296-155 WAC Safety Standards for Construction Work, Part L, Cranes, Rigging and Personnel Lifting. The Association provided feedback on tower crane permits, safety requirements and scoping questions as regulators consider updates to the state’s approach.
“These types of efforts underscore SC&RA’s responsibility to make sure our members’ voices are heard wherever policy and regulation are being shaped,” said Beth O’Quinn, Senior Vice President, Crane & Rigging. “Whether it’s OSHA at the federal level or state agencies revisiting crane safety, our focus is on ensuring any new standards are practical, performancedriven and ultimately support safe and efficient operations.”
Progress also continued on automation
and harmonization. In Massachusetts, identical bills were filed in both chambers of the legislature to increase the superload threshold from 130,000 pounds GVW –the lowest in New England – to 199,000 pounds GVW. The bill was heard by the Senate transportation committee in early October as action on this reform is advancing rapidly. This step aligns Massachusetts with neighboring states, reduces costly engineering and route surveys and advances SC&RA’s multi-year effort to harmonize state policy for safer, more efficient interstate commerce.
North Dakota Highway Patrol also updated its approach, now allowing single trip permits, when good cause is shown, for oversize and overweight vehicles – as authorized by section 39-12-02 NDCC and Article 38-06 NDAC. Previously, weight limits constrained cranes operating as single units. The change, driven by long-standing positive relationships between SC&RA and state officials, permits movement through bridging with the automated system.
In Tennessee, inconsistent delays in superload permit approvals remain a challenge. Following direct discussions with SC&RA, the Tennessee DOT agreed to meet with members to explore improvements to its permit software and queue policy, which is based upon travel date rather than the more common application date. SC&RA also created resources – including letters and talking
points – to support members navigating delays, while convening a coalition of interested members to push for additional reforms.
From regulatory and tariff challenges to safety and infrastructure issues, SC&RA is reducing obstacles while advancing policies that protect members’ interests and promote long-term growth.

These wins and initiatives highlight the power of a coordinated voice for specialized transportation. Our goal is always the same –to address immediate challenges while ensuring members are positioned for long-term success.
CHRIS
SMITH, SC&RA Vice President, Transportation California likewise signaled progress, with Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol announcing plans to submit a grant request to FMCSA for 100 percent federal funding to implement a 24/7 auto-issue permit system. California remains the largest of just six states without such a system, though recent adoption in Connecticut, Oregon and Wyoming underscores the momentum.

In Maryland, the State Highway Administration now allows 24/7 travel for loads up to 400,000 pounds with approval by permit staff. Approval will be granted after review of factors such as travel locations, dimensions and history.
The shift eliminates a longstanding curfew around the Port of Baltimore that often delayed the export of high and heavy breakbulk commodities. Officials attributed the change directly to their participation in SC&RA’s Specialized Transportation Symposium and the ensuing discussions with members.
“These wins and initiatives highlight the power of a coordinated voice for specialized transportation,” said Chris Smith, SC&RA Vice President, Transportation. “Our goal is always the same – to address immediate challenges while ensuring members are positioned for long-term success.”

SC&RA, alongside the California Trucking Association, California Transportation Permit Advisory Council, a group of OS/OW carriers and state officials there have long pressed for this move.

In August 2025, SC&RA sent a letter to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick specifically addressing steel and aluminum tariffs. The letter requested modifications to Section 232 steel orders – urging reductions for unavailable ultra-highstrength steel and for cranes, rigging and specialized transportation equipment not produced domestically.
It also emphasized that Association members need time to plan and complete long-term orders to acquire certain cranes, rigging and specialized transportation equipment under established tariff and cost structures to meet customer requirements in critical sectors of national security.
SC&RA applauded the confirmation of Derek Barr as administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The Association also continued to work diligently in anticipation of the 2026 Congressional reauthorization of federal surface transportation programs.
Added Dandrea, “Our work is never done – because the challenges our members face are constantly evolving. What doesn’t change is our commitment to detail, our focus on results and the value we deliver. Every initiative, every comment, every partnership is about ensuring our members have the tools, resources and advocacy they need to succeed today and the foundation to thrive tomorrow.”

Rose Augustin discusses how to turn risk into a competitive advantage.
In today’s fast-paced business environment, finding ways to control and maximize costs is the name of the game. While insurance expenses may seem like a fixed cost beyond your control, shifting your perspective from simply purchasing insurance to strategically financing risk can make quite the difference.

Rose Augustin is senior marketing manager for National Interstate Insurance Company based in Richfield, OH. National Interstate Insurance is rated “A+” (Superior) by A.M. Best.

The insurance industry is inherently cyclical, subject to various external influences that can cause significant market fluctuations. This volatility often leaves businesses struggling to manage one of their top operating expenses. However, this challenging landscape presents an opportunity for forward-thinking organizations to take a proactive approach.
Savvy business leaders recognize that collaborating closely with their insurance agents and carriers is not just about securing coverage, it’s about crafting a comprehensive, well thought out plan to turn risk into a competitive advantage. Now is the time for your operation to embrace this proactive approach and leverage risk
management to set your business apart in the marketplace.
After working with hundreds of crane, rigging and specialized carrier operations over the years, there are two distinct mentalities on insurance. Some companies purchase a policy and put insurance out of their minds for the next 365 days. While these companies are doing and expecting nothing in return for purchasing insurance, others actively manage risk throughout the policy year.
To illustrate these two mentalities let’s take two fictitious operations – John Smith’s Crane and Richard Roe’s Rigging. Both are experienced and well-known operations in the industry. They are both

working hard to run a profitable business despite the myriad of challenges they face. One of the main differences between these companies is how they handle insurance.
John understands insurance to be a commodity, something beyond his control. He likens it to fuel costs, often looking for the cheapest price. To John accidents are more or less an unlucky event. And losses? They are simply a cost of doing business in this industry. As you would expect, John’s least favorite time of the year is when his insurance renewal is approaching.
Conversely, Richard recognizes the potential to manage his company’s risk effectively. He has successfully engaged
employees at all levels in adopting a proactive approach to risk and accident reduction. By implementing a Return to Work program, utilizing Automated Event Recorders, and enhancing the overall safety program, Richard has significantly decreased claim frequency, positioning his company to thrive in the future.
After reading the tale of two companies, do you find yourself aligning more with John, but you want to be more like Richard? It may seem like an uphill, never-ending battle but turning risk into a competitive advantage is entirely possible.

In today’s business, finding ways to control and maximize costs is the name of the game.
Here are a few steps many successful company owners have taken to make it happen:
■ ADOPT A PROACTIVE, HOLISTIC APPROACH: Secure support and commitment from senior leadership to actively work on managing risk throughout the policy period, not only around renewal time.
■ IMPLEMENT RISK MITIGATION TOOLS: Utilize strategies and tools that fit your operation and reduce your risk for both accidents and Workers’ Compensation claims.
■ TAKE CALCULATED RISKS: The insurance industry has evolved significantly, offering innovative options for risk financing. Evaluate different losssensitive risk financing strategies, such as captives, risk retention groups, and large deductibles. Regularly consult with an insurance broker who possesses deep expertise in these programs, so they can help you explore and reassess the best solutions for your needs.
■ THE LONG GAME: When choosing insurance, determine the most efficient way to finance risk over a three-to-five-year period. Purchasing insurance in the short-term often leads to large collateral burdens, poor claims outcomes and sudden premium increases at renewal.
■ MAXIMIZE CARRIER RESOURCES: Many companies remain unaware of the innovative programs available, and some even perceive loss-control visits as an inconvenience. However, the most successful operations recognize the value of these services and actively leverage them to improve safety and reduce risk. Ensure that you fully utilize the loss-control services offered by your insurance carrier.
Risk can be managed more effectively than many realize, transforming it into a significant competitive edge in the industry. Adopting a disciplined, proactive approach to risk management isn’t just theoretical – it’s a proven strategy that modern business owners should seriously consider to maintain their success. ■

Creating a list of North America’s top crane-owning companies was a priority for American Cranes & Transport from the very beginning. The idea for the ACT50 (and later the ACT100) was conceived when the magazine started with the launch issue in June 2005. In the July 2005 issue, ACT published the precursor to the ACT50, which was compiled using the North American companies from the IC50, the global crane top list from our sister magazine, International Cranes and Specialized Transport. Who do you think was first on that first list? If you guessed Maxim Crane Works, you were right. See page 43 for some interesting ACT100 trivia over the past 20 years. The 2025 ACT100 added 302,266 tons of capacity for a record ACT index of 3,417,097. In 2024 the ACT Index was In 2025,

3,114,831. In 2023, the ACT100 index grew 500,000 tons in capacity, erasing the retraction in the index in 2022. For comparison, the ACT100 index in 2023 was 3,080,314. In 2022, it was 2,552,592 and in 2021 it was 2,868,110. In 2020, the ACT100 index was 2,778,193.
Suffice it to say, the ACT100 index has settled firmly in the 3 million ton capacity range for two years straight.
Maxim Crane Works is still number one, reporting an index of 721,581, slightly down from its index of 732,241 in 2024. Maxim is not just the first company on the ACT100, but the first company by a far margin in excess of 400,000 tons. In 2025, the top 10 experienced a true shake-up. While Maxim, Bigge and ALL

Family of Companies kept their 1, 2, 3 ranks, Barnhart Crane & Rigging jumped up to 4 and Bay Crane Companies, a newcomer to the list, anchors the Number 5 spot. Barnhart jumped up in part due to its acquisition of NCSG Crane in Canada and other acquisitions. While Bigge remained at Number 2, the company also had a big jump in its fleet size and ACT100 index.

get Bay Crane Companies on the list for the past 19 years. Having Bay Crane on the list is a big win, giving the ACT100 further credibility.
Buckner HeavyLift, Marmon Crane Services, Lampson International, TNT Crane & Rigging and J.F. Lomma Inc. round out the top 10. Big gainers in the top 50 this year include Barnhart, Big
In 2025, the number of branches grew from 814 to 828. The number of employees on the ACT100 grew from 42,281 to 42,590.
In 2025, the crawler count grew to 3,481, from 3,324 in 2024, a gain of 157 units. It’s our highest crawler count ever. Mobile cranes counts grew 718 units in

2025 to 15,759, from 15,041 units in 2024. Last year the number of mobile cranes fell by nine units.
Beyond Bay Crane Companies, newcomers on the ACT100 include Crane Service Inc. at 29, CEX Crane & Lift at 40, BMS Heavy Cranes at 43, Borsheim Crane Service at 65, Continental Crane & Equipment Service at 72, Emerson Crane Rental at 92 and
North Texas Crane Service at 95.
The largest crawler crane fleet in North America is owned by Maxim Crane Works with 400 crawler cranes. Bigge follows with 396 crawlers and Lampson with 393.
The ALL Family of Companies has the largest number of mobile cranes with 1,470 units. Maxim has 1,296 mobile units and Bigge has 1,122.
The largest crane on the ACT100 has changed for the first time in a while – Buckner HeavyLift Cranes acquired the HLCC LRC 7500 Ring Crane, which has a capacity of 7,500 tons.
We sent surveys to close to 500 companies in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. While the ACT100 is much more comprehensive than it was when we started it 20 years ago, we realize there are probably 10 to 15 major craneowning companies not represented. Some companies do not want to share information about their fleets, and we respect their decision.
This year we were 100 percent with the ACT100. There are two ties and two companies with an asterisk, shown as an estimate.
As stated previously, in the largest crane category, different capacities may be listed for the same machine. We rely on the information supplied to us in determining these capacities as rigging variables can change the capacity of the crane.

The 2025 ranking of North America's largest specialized transportation companies reveals many positives. The 2025 ACTTRANSPORT50 has grown from last year, and a newcomer to the list has given the index a nice boost. Bay Crane Companies enters the ACTTRANSPORT50 at number 7. Bay Crane Companies does significant heavy haul work throughout the Northeast and Midwest. The company reports a fleet size of 1,591 units and a total capacity of 56,659 tons.
The other new company on the list this year is Beyel Brothers, which posted up at Number 26. Based in Cocoa, FL, Beyel Brothers performs work throughout the Southeastern United States and the Gulf Coast region.
The top 10 didn’t change much in 2025, with Mammoet Americas moving to Number 9, up from Number 12 last year. Most companies stayed at or close to their 2024 ranking.
The TRANSPORT50 index in is 47,681, up 1,121 units from 2024, which posted a fleet size of 46,560. The total capacity of the TRANSPORT50 this year is 1,353,496 tons, up 300,240 tons from 2024, at 1,053,256.
The only two indexes that retracted in 2025 are the number of truck/tractors and the number of depots. In 2024, we

reported 17,811 truck/tractors, and this year we report 17,644, down some 167 units. In 2024, the TRANSPORT50 reported 1,808 depots. This year there are 142 fewer with 1,666 locations. Employee counts were up 3,593, with 29,942 employees this year and 26,349 last year
Ranked by total capacity, the TRANSPORT50 shows Mammoet as Number 1 with a capacity of 141,844 tons. Barnhart is Number 2 at 104,585 tons and ALL Family of Companies is Number 3 at 103,575.
As for our TRANSPORT50 ranking, Landstar Transportation Logistics kept its long-time Number 1 spot with a fleet size of 11,428, down from 12,970 in 2024. Due to ties in fleet size, 52 companies are represented on the
50 list.

The 2025 SPECIALIZEDLIFTING &RIGGING50 reports continued industry growth, particularly in total lifting capacity and size of workforce. This year, the total specialized lifting capacity increased to 1,856,949 tons, reflecting a 202,953-ton rise from 1,656,082 tons in 2024. The steady year-over-year increase indicates that rigging companies are investing in high-capacity lifting solutions to support large-scale infrastructure and industrial projects. Mammoet Americas, Fagioli USA and Barnhart Crane & Rigging remain industry leaders, operating highly advanced rigging and lifting systems and leading the ranking. Bay Crane Service joins the SPECIALIZEDLIFTING&RIGGING50
The 2025 SPECIALIZED LIFTING&RIGGING50 highlights steady growth in lifting capacity, workforce size and equipment investment.

for the first time in 2025 at Number 4. Long Beach, CA-based Bragg Companies made its debut appearance at Number 33, alongside Superior Rigging & Erecting, which claimed the 40th spot.
Workforce expansion, though modest, still played a role in this year’s ranking. The total number of employees increased from 20,781 in 2024 to 21,449 in 2025, reflecting a growth of 668 workers. This uptick is likely due to newcomers to the
list and companies that are responding to the ongoing demand in construction, energy and heavy transportation sectors.
Equipment trends saw mixed changes this year. The number of gantries increased slightly from 1,127 in 2024 to 1,230 in 2025, while strand jack units saw minimal growth, rising from 1,358 to 1,364. These numbers suggest that while precision
lifting methods remain critical, there hasn’t been a major shift in reliance on gantry or strand jack solutions. However, “other specialized lifting equipment,” a catch-all category, grew from 6,869 units in 2024 to 10,213 in 2025. This increase points to the push for more versatile and adaptive lifting technologies to accommodate evolving lifting and rigging requirements.
Overall, the 2025 SLR50 ranking reflects steady industry progression,
with moderate growth in lifting capacity, workforce numbers and equipment acquisition. While the surge in some categories was smaller than initially expected, the data still signals a resilient and forward-moving industry. As specialized lifting companies continue investing in new technologies and operational efficiency, they are wellpositioned to handle the increasing complexity of global infrastructure projects in the years ahead. ■
ACT began distributing survey forms for the SPECIALIZEDLIFTING&RIGGING50 list via email in January 2025 and followed up with phone calls and more emails in February. The companies that completed and returned these surveys over the course of the last two months were included in this year’s list.
For some companies we were forced to use their data from our 2024 list. In these cases, an asterisk appears next to that company’s name. As a result, the SPECIALIZEDLIFTING&RIGGING50 is an estimate.
While every effort was made to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the information in this list, ACT, its editors and its publishers do not assume responsibility for any errors or omissions. We strive to improve this list, as well as our other annual lists, every year.

After several years of slow expansion and cautious optimism, the tower crane sector is showing signs of restraint. Analysis of the 2025 ACTTOWERCRANE50 reveals that a few of North America’s leading companies have pulled back slightly, trimming fleets, downsizing teams and reevaluating depot footprints. The contraction is not seismic, but it is telling.

Fleet adjustments and workforce reductions mark a year of recalibration for North America’s tower crane sector. Hannah Sundermeyer reports.

2,442 to 2,411, while branch locations dropped from 281 to 274. Interestingly, despite this modest contraction, overall employment increased from 9,440 to 9,942 workers. The numbers reflect a sector recalibrating fleet and footprint while continuing to invest in its workforce.
Morrow Equipment maintains its longstanding position at Number 1 spot, backed by a powerful fleet of 572 cranes and a dominating presence. Maxim Crane Works follows at Number 2, leveraging its expansive national footprint and workforce of over 2,400 employees. Uperio North America, ALL Family of Companies and Stafford Tower Crane round out the top five.
closer look
As the market shifts, this year’s ACTTOWERCRANE50 reveals a subtle reshuffling. Canada remains a strong player on the list, with five
companies in the top 20 and growing regional representation. Québec-based Guay exited the ranking after selling off its tower crane fleet. Sims Crane and Crane Service Inc. have also left the tower crane sector. Two newcomers, Bay Crane Companies and Torre Crane, made notable debuts in 2025.
Bay Crane ranks in the top half of the list, entering the ACTTOWERCRANE50 at Number 15 – a strong start for a
newcomer. The company reports a fleet of 45 tower cranes, supported by a substantial employee base of 1,230 and 24 depot locations across the United States. With a largest tower crane model listed as the Terex Peiner SK575 (35 metric ton capacity), Bay Crane’s equipment mix appears geared toward high-capacity, general construction work.
Torre Crane also joins the ACTTOWERCRANE50 this year, debuting at Number 18. The
company posted a fleet of 35 tower cranes, a notable total for a regional operator. Torre operates from two depots, with a relatively lean team of 30 employees. Despite its compact footprint, Torre’s fleet includes high-capacity models like the Terex Comedil CTT 720B-40 (40 metric tons), suggesting the company focuses on technically demanding jobsites.
The overall picture is one of strategic consolidation. We are seeing crane fleets and depots right-sized, but a larger
workforce. In a market that continues to adjust to shifting demand, companies appear focused on sharpening service, regional coverage and personnel depth rather than sheer crane volume.
The ACT team gathers data year-round for the ACTTOWERCRANE50

The crane marketplace is global, although there are still regulations and other issues that complicate the ability for there to be a truly “global” crane, trailer or related equipment. Most of the major OEMs
produce cranes for markets around the world. For the purpose of the American Cranes & Transport Sourcebook, we only include cranes and related equipment that are marketed in North America. In the global marketplace, the metric system is standard for determining crane capacity and related information. However, in North America, most owners and users still look to the Imperial system for their measurements. However, crane manufacturers have begun to see the benefit of using one system to market their cranes, and more American crane owners have begun to accept the metric system as the new standard.
However, the conversion process is still necessary in many cases.
In the ACT Sourcebook 2026, we have ranked the crane categories four different ways. In the mobile and crawler crane categories, we have ranked the cranes lised by metric tons and U.S. tons. In the boom truck category, we ranked the cranes by U.S. tons only. In the industrial and articulating crane categories, we have ranked the machines by pounds, metric tons and U.S. tons. In the tower crane category, we have ranked crane capacities by ton meters. We are providing these conversion tables as a matter of convenience.
Please do not use the conversions in important technical or safety calculations as they are designed as a guide to converting figures, not as a definitive listing.
For Manitowoc, Link-Belt and other cranes manufactured for the North American market, model names often indicate the lifting capacity of the crane in U.S. tons. ■
